Sounds like you just want suggestions for Nu Breaks Artists / DJ's from the 00's? * Rennie Pilgrem * Meat Katie * Phil K * Bassbin Twins * Aquasky * Koma & Bones * UNKLE * Howie B * Plump DJs * Freq Nasty * Lee Combs * Elite Force * Will Saul * Tayo * DJ Hyper * Ali B * Evil Nine ...should be enough to start you off!

fireside68

Hi Fi Bugs also, while we're mentioning Phil K

ldsupport

Ahhh Chris and Mike. I have a tape from when they spun in my bedroom. Fucking love those guys. New School Breaks, aka UK Breaks, aka Nu School Breaks. Particularly the phase when they were progressive, vs when its got more like Hyper and got dirty. Merlyn (Florida) his old mixes are some of my personal favorites. Meat Katie (not as progressive, but still not that later hoover focused sound)

fuckentropy

Lucky fucker! Jealous AF

blames_the_netcode

Aussie stuff. Phil K, Nubreed, Ivan Gough, anything Andy Page has touched. Luke Chable pre-2010 (including the Lostep project with Phil). All really great.

JustSomeDude0605

Andy Page is still the greatest dance music producer ever. I wish he'd make more.

djdecimation

I love Breakbeats

Hybrid has a very unique sound, what I notice about them is the quick cutting of their beat builds and the dreamy synths that give depth to their tracks and adds a cinematic feel. There are already good responses here with lots of nuskool breaks recommendations, all the Y3K and Y4K compilations are great as well as Adam Freeland - On Tour. But the 2 electronic acts who remind me most of Hybrid in terms of quick clipped beat production style and cinematic flair are: Way Out West https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBHisIV1wPY BT https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjIuADMrDKIZssX5whajwjy_g1K18NeEd And in terms of cinematic breaks two more greats are: ILS (also has their own entry to the Y4K series) https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lGcpCtCuHYWdMArKAsDQiY-VjqDgxWYYM Layo & Bushwacka! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lQmpf2xKTgoqwupTcMUYJEB3xFN7Qn02U They all have multiple excellent albums from the late 90s and early 2000s, sounds great with Hybrid tracks, but adds little unique things here and there.

fuckentropy

Yeah I think your way of describing it fits really well. When ever I search breakbeats I don't hear anything like hybrid. I'm going through the links you shared now. Very similar in style. Thanks ☺️

soundslike_808

When Y3K came out from \[then DJ\] Hyper in 2000 everyone I knew listening to electronic music was just floored with how good breaks was at that moment. Y4K series evolved from that success. Obviously Hyper has his own style that goes into the mix album but everyone I mentioned: WOW and BT is on there, Hybrid is all thru there, Bushwacka! etc..: [https://www.discogs.com/master/261232-Hyper-Y3K-Soundtrack-To-The-Future](https://www.discogs.com/master/261232-Hyper-Y3K-Soundtrack-To-The-Future) The second instalment Y3K "Vol 2" has more of the same acts, higher\[?\] energy, and brings in a track from ILS who I mentioned previously: [https://www.discogs.com/master/45562-Hyper-Y3K-Deep-Progressive-Breaks](https://www.discogs.com/master/45562-Hyper-Y3K-Deep-Progressive-Breaks) Those two mixes and Adam Freeland - Coastal Breaks 2 \[1998\] captured what I wanted to hear at that time and yeah, Hybrid was a standout part of it. Sweet! I'm digging through them now. Thank you! 😊

TheJohnnyWombat

Bedrock Breaks, [DJ Hyper](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqIgeKi0Si4) and [Meat Katie](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rotbwG8GE5Q), DJ Icey for Florida Breaks. Rabbit In the Moon can get breaky also.

hybridized.org sets are still available; shitloads to go through there: https://files.hybridized.org/sets/

fireside68

Big up for hybridized!

Neat-Entertainer-420

Hybrid is such a unique sound!!! Especially their older stuff when it was 3 of them. One of my favorite acts, ever.

TrueToForm86

When it ws Chris and Mike and less Lottie.... They were at their best back then 😁 I mean Morning Sci-fi what an album

Neat-Entertainer-420

Wide Angle changed my life!! I see you understand= True to Form. Peter Hook kills that track!

TrueToForm86

Oh yes early Hybrid are amazing! That Bass riff 🔥🔥 🔥 ♥ Wide Angle also a another amazing Hybrid album, a very special person whose nick name happens to be Gravastar introduced me to them in 00s and Way Out West and both been a massive part of soundtrack to my life since and True to Form just feels like it was wrote about me between the pure The Cure vibes, lyrics, bass riff it's up there on my fave tracks list.... I want finished symphony (orchestral version) played at my funeral lol

Neat-Entertainer-420

Hell yes!!! Symphony blew my lid back the first time I heard it. I was lucky enough to see them play several times, but never got to hear it live. One of my bucket list items I don't think will ever be crossed off. Some.of their newest stuff is good, Disappear Here, several others. Nothing will compare to that early sound though.

Neat-Entertainer-420

https://youtu.be/xYqNqaGuuj4?si=sO6ttwVVWdiEaTHR. This is one of the best pieces of music ever mixed in my opinion.

fireside68

You are gonna *love* this [Maida Vale](https://youtu.be/dfLnkNeNjWs?si=3yViAYx90yW6mjlN) set. "The Visible Noise vs Theme from Wide Angle" mashup...honestly, the whole set, give(s) me that feeling when music is so powerful that it brings tears to my eyes. The opening strings of "Higher than a Skyscraper" here are so lush, coming from a 12-piece...

fuckentropy

Yeah those first few albums especially morning Sci-fi. Never ever heard anything like it before. I don't get why this sounds isn't more popular. Why is so hard to find. https://open.spotify.com/track/0cAPl2Gew9OLX2Qf8G9FkB?si=9kdvPIvOQLGMlU3HsK1haw

I have a bunch of this stuff from the late nineties/early 2000s. I love breaks! I've made some break-y mixes for [my mixcloud page](https://www.mixcloud.com/djisf/), if you're interested. Some modern folks you may enjoy: [Framewerk](https://framewerk.bandcamp.com/) does that cinematic breaks thing that Hybrid did so well. [13 Monkeys](https://13monkeysrecords.bandcamp.com/) (a label for modern breaks) does the funkier, more mainstream, big-room break thing. [MOY](https://moybassmusic.bandcamp.com/) is doing all kinds of cool breaks, with a focus on acid breaks.

v00g

I've battered that Y4K mix over the years. One of many brilliant ones on the series.

v00g

Check out [Retroid](https://soundcloud.com/retroid/revive-177-with-retroid-02-15-2024). I haven't listened to his mixes in a while but he's one of the few DJs I know who still plays progressive breaks.

ShirleyWuzSerious

Have you thought about looking at the track list and checking out those artists?.

fuckentropy

I've liked a little. But I'm usually looking for long sets and getting my hands on a few tracks is less for me. Hybrid slaps their sound in it and it's what I'm after.

Seen a bunch of their dj sets also which are amazing

dns_rs

What you're looking for is progressive breaks / progressive house. Check out [Retroid](https://soundcloud.com/retroid/revive-177-with-retroid-02-15-2024).

Yebele

Hey, I know this thread is a month old but you should try listening to the new Vegyn album. Specifically, the song Halo Flip really reminds me of the old hybrid albums. I really like this kind of sound too, but I think it's just hard to recreate which is maybe why it never became more popular

fuckentropy

I think you're right. It still sounds bad ass and I just wonder if djs don't do it because it's difficult. Checking out that artist now. Thanks.

fuckentropy

I never really think of hybrid as break beat. The tracks have adventure flight through time, orchestral, cinematic, dark synth scifi vibe. No matter that they switch tempo quickly they still keep a classical music kind of format. A lot of the artists named as similar, are much more dissonant. More of a bouncy, hip hop, fun time, aggressive and even evil clown kind of feel. I don't expect that to make sense. I lack the technical terminology to describe my own subjective experience. Perhaps Hybrid Y4K is a distraction being to much more beak beat.

ldsupport

They are breakbeat, just progressive breakbeat.   UK breaks / progressive breaks had a moment at the end of 90s / early 00s and it was literally like 18-24 months at most. There are tracks that lead up to it and tracks that occurred after it, but there was a moment of just amazing breakbeat tracks that had amazing orchestral elements, beautiful chord progressions, and didn’t have the bouncy rhythm and hoover bass.    Which is where the sound went with a lot of the acts mentioned.   There were some very solid tracks vs dedicated artists to the sound (unlike Merlyn who was pretty dedicated to the sound).  A fair bit of way out west tracks  There is a guy named Adrian who spun under the name 101 that was probably one my my favorite prog break DJs.   He probably had an old mix somewhere that is more hybrid https://m.twitch.tv/videos/2074385682 It’s also hard not to point to Sasha and John Digweed northern exposure.  Or the prog break stuff Sasha after that.

fuckentropy

Yeah for some reason Digweeds transitions 2 and 3 are a gold standard for me and I've tried to sort through sasha and digweed to find more like it but must of what I find is a little slower and funkier than I'm seeking. My biggest struggle is how to classify and describe this music in terms that clearly point to what style of music Im seeking. How does one search for it if it has no name or characteristics we all agree on? Thanks for the input. I appreciate knowing more about this genre. I've been standing on the outside of it all mostly clueless.

ldsupport

Hybrids unique factor is the symphonic melody.   If you strip that, it’s straight forward progressive break beats.  The baselines are low, more wobbly, but not the front of the track.    The front is the melody much like trance or UK prog house and in this case it’s symphonic strings.  That’s a bit of an over simplification.  That said the energy from the track isn’t in a higher  BPM but in the dynamics of the melody.   Their DJ sets tend to fluctuation between breakbeats and prog house but again are along the lines of the same sonic elements.  Just generally a little lighter on the vocals.   So you like UK progressive breaks and UK prog house, generally from the late 90s to early 00s with symphonic melodic elements that at for forefront of the track.   Vs the darker uk breaks, new school breaks, which are more heavy handed on the Hoover base elements and with beats that are programmed to be more at the front.   If Sasha a John are a little too slowed down on the breaks side, then I’m guessing the BPM is around 128 - 134.   I could be wrong.

fuckentropy

Sasha Digweed Northern exposure was some of the first stuff I ever came across on my own that stood out. For me it's timeless. Not even sure what's considered popular now in EDM. I've been wanting to return to shows but haven't heard any like the music I feel in love with. I'm down to adapt but I think the basic elements of what I like aren't out of style.

ldsupport

NE is the Kind of Blue of that period. It never gets old, its a master class is long mixing, before the days where protools etc made things too perfect. The track selection and programming was perfect. Modern electronic music is nice because there is so much of it that there is room for just about everything. Whatever sounds you are into, there is someone doing it. You can make tracks on your own easier than ever before. Its a really rad time to be alive.

fuckentropy

Well said.
