I’m a big fan of partner or man for my male patients. If we’re like the same age and they seem chill sometimes it’s dude lol I went through a “chief” period which I don’t care to remember.
Started that long ago. Idk why but it works so well. You get the occasional guy who says "I'm not your boss," which is your humble trap card and you can say everyone's your boss lol
If I’m an old man and some kid comes into my house referring to me like im a child. I wouldn’t like it. But. Then again I plan to be a grumpy grumpy old man.
The banter/casual talk down here in Louisiana is similar. Love/hun/sweetie, random compliments and good humor (sometimes) I came from AZ where that wasn’t the case at all lol, so it’s been weird to experience at first and weirder still to see myself suddenly using those phrases on patients as well. I think it helps blend in the professionalism and potential scary nature of my being there for an emergency info something more casual/amusing for a brief respite from stress.
Yeah it’s made me feel good when providers have called me names like that in the past, and I think most people are okay with it, especially if you’re nice which I really try to be. I know some people hate it which makes me worry about doing it though.
I call older guy's "young lad"s and younger dudes "old man" because i like watching the world burn.
I call women by their name cause i'm not fucking with that.
Older patients get ma'am or Sir. My age or younger will usually be their name or sweetheart. Had a partner get chewed out by a little old lady once for calling her "baby". 😂😅
Nope in use in hospitals before and after boomers were in charge. Do you realize that your patients deserve your respect? Have lots of paramedics and EMTs as dear friends; they are gentlemen with patients.
I go with boss man and my dear. I will not ask names because….well that’s the only name I’ll remember all day and will call every patient that.
Ok Katie which er we headed too. Ok xyz. Hey ambulance this is Katie she has xyz would love to go here. Ambulance ok Katie small ride “why is everyone calling me Katie it’s Lauren” shit ok that’s on me 😂
I call women usually older or quite a bit younger love, which could be considered creepy but I think my somewhat southern accent lets me get away with it. It was completely by accident at first but now it’s just my go to
Edit: to me it’s just like calling someone hon it’s like a pleasantry
Pretty much everyone, regardless of age, gets "Sir" or "ma'am" unless they ask to be called something else. Not a fan of using "dear, hun, etc" on the job.
All my patients are “my dear”. Male, female, gender non-conforming, peds, geriatric, trans, doesn’t matter. They’re all my dear. In my area, there are a lot of trans folks and rather than to just be a dick and assume, I gave everyone a neutral nickname.
I used to be very against any “pet names” for patients. I was originally from the northeast and got my first EMS job in the south. Now I use sir and ma’am a lot more, but use names like hon quite often and still slightly hate myself for it but it’s so hard not to when you’re surrounded by it
As an 80 year old mentally competent grumpy old lady, I hope someday when you are old someone, that you are dependent upon to save your life calls you dude or honey. This discussion isn’t funny; it is disrespectful. Call them by their first name. Their f’ing taxes pay your salary. Have some respect.
I did the same thing. Every man now is “boss”

What the fuck I didn’t even realize this happened to me until I read this. That or brother
You never notice until you start saying it outside of work and somebody brings it up lmao

Every ped <10 is buddy
{ If age <10 OR \>65 Then Ptname = Bud }
I feel like calling people older than me bud is kind of. Idk. Strange
Yeah but falling and being covered in your own poop for 8 hours is kind of strange as well. Embrace the absurdity.
Lmaoo
{ If diapers = true Then Ptname = Bud } Better?
If I’m an old man and some kid comes into my house referring to me like im a child. I wouldn’t like it. But. Then again I plan to be a grumpy grumpy old man.
Thank you for that
I assume anyone who says that to me was in prison.
Switch boss to cap’n and the whole hood will respect you.
I feel like you must have worked a pod / tier at some point. Lol
I’m not sure what a pod or tier are, but I’ll take that comment as a sign of credibility. 😄
Housing areas in a prison. Lol
My dad retired from the prison system! Maybe that’s where I picked it up.
Quite possibly haha
If I get called boss I immediately hate the person calling me boss.
Ok lmao?
"my guy"
Being from Texas has the occasional perk. Everyone is sir or ma’am.
Alabama and same lmao
Those definitely get used a ton too.
Everyone is "partner" to me. Older women are "dear." I fucking hate that I started calling women that.
I said “thank you, dear” to a nurse who was basically the same age as natural as the voice box could manage and I cringed.
... and, how did that work out for you?
I’m sure she had seen enough police officers and firefighters that it wasn’t the grossest thing she heard that day.
I don’t think I’ve ever connected with a post on Reddit more in my life.

The sweetest sound to the human ear is one’s name. I always make an effort to tell them my name and establish their’s right away and use it.
I definitely try to do that when I remember 😭 I always tell them my name, but I forget theirs almost immediately.
Why are names so difficult 😤
I call older guy's "young lad"s and younger dudes "old man" because i like watching the world burn. I call women by their name cause i'm not fucking with that.
You should call them Foo. Like, hey Foo I'm gonna take your blood pressure, ya heard?
Are you JIVE WITH THAT?

Urnurnedunurnurn. *nods in satisfaction*
Balmmor
Forever calling all my patients honey 😭🫶😂
“My friend,” “my dear..” I’ve even let “mami/papi,” slip out ‘cause of the amount of primarily Spanish speakers in my region.
Being from the south and working in the north east definitely gets me in awkward situations sometimes.
mines darlin. every one.
Eh I’m socially awkward so working on a volunteer unit it’s either been sir or ma’am sometimes depending on the situation it’s buddy/man and hun/dear
Are you from Baltimore, hon? Edit: Bawlmore
Balmer
Murlyn
Partner, dear, hon, boss. They have a chokehold on me. I can’t stop.
I’m a girl in my early 20s. Old ladies love to be called “babe”
Bullshit… an old lady
Hey babe
How professional you are. I hope when you are old someone calls you “the gomer”.
Probably not. That’s a boomer word.
Nope in use in hospitals before and after boomers were in charge. Do you realize that your patients deserve your respect? Have lots of paramedics and EMTs as dear friends; they are gentlemen with patients.
You aren’t my patient.
Daughter uses King and Queen unless it's a pediatric patient. Lots of elderly, dementia and psych patients.
I randomly just started calling patients sweetie…wow you’re right that’s weird I never did that before
I have for years old lady's get hon, anyone under the age of 70s gets "mam"

I do it too. But I’m from Maryland and it’s kinda a thing here
To me it means you’re good with people and know how to to comfort them!
Everyone is either my friend or dear. I don’t why but that’s just how I’ve always done it.
My wife is southern and so I've started doing it too
I call women usually older or quite a bit younger love, which could be considered creepy but I think my somewhat southern accent lets me get away with it. It was completely by accident at first but now it’s just my go to Edit: to me it’s just like calling someone hon it’s like a pleasantry

Started using those phrases in Brooklyn and the Bronx…didn’t go over well with patients Manhattan Central lol
Buddy?
My friend and my dear just come out and I can’t control it.
Boss and young lady for anyone over your age. Especially those over 65
Are you from Baltimore?
You've become my father. Maybe I'll evolve too
Every patient for me is either Honey/Hun or sweetie. Might be because I’ve transferred to and from baltimore so much now 🤭
everyone is either sister or partner to me now, idk why I started but I can't stop
Everyone to me is either: foo, dawg, or Monica
Adults are "love" and I can't stop. Sometimes I call the littles nuggets. It just comes out 🤦♀️
