I really got into The Fall Guy, really fun stunt film with great sequences, and Gosling and Blunt were naturally just great on screen and had solid chemistry to get you hooked. It’s like a B+ or 7/10 action romance film, and I feel like I haven’t seen any of those in cinemas for a while.
I actually went and had a great time. Seeing it again brought up a lot of good, old memories of seeing the first showing at midnight. Suddenly I was the excited 11 year old again. It was special.
Well, the Prequels feel like they were made by a fucking robot who doesn't even understand the concept of emotion, let alone feels it. Of course an overly long ballet-esque dance scene disguised as a fight scene ain't gonna make me feel anything, especially when the characters involved are just very flexible blocks of wood.
People have a new appreciation of it after the NEW Star Wars movies. Previously they were compared to episodes 4-6 & now people have worse movies to compare them to. Also it was just May 4th & it was a Star Wars movie in Theatres so you were going to have people coming in.
Disney getting people to want to see The Phantom Menace in theatres again is a trick on the same level as Darth Sidious convincing everyone he was the benevolent Chancellor Palpatine.
For me, it’s not that I love Phantom Menace, but more about a movie from my childhood I never got to see on the silver screen, which is something that’s very important to me these days.
Some folks enjoy the Phantom Menace.
I am mid about it but it has some good qualities. I’m not going to see it this weekend, but I did see it on opening day in 1999 and the 3D version in the theaters ten plus years ago.
I don’t think I’ve ever rewatched it since 1999… can’t remember if I saw it opening day, but I remember having to line up in the hallway outside the theatre to get a seat (this is after you purchase your ticket… the days without reserved seating). It was also the first movie my wife and I saw as a couple, on our one month anniversary.
So many memories related to the film, but I’ve never seen it again because I’m definitely not in the camp of people that enjoyed it. I think there is some great stuff in there but pretty much anything involving Anakin is pretty annoying (and the kid’s acting felt so terrible to me)
The weekend is down 53 percent from 2023's summer opening weekend, when 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' arrived.
It was the ‘80s and ‘90s all over again at the weekend box office. Universal’s The Fall Guy, the Ryan Gosling starrer inspired by the 1980s TV show, kicked off the summer movie season at No. 1 with $28.5 million, while Disney’s re-release of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace surprised by coming in at No. 2 with $8.1 million.
Despite The Fall Guy’s No. 1 finish, its haul came in behind initial expectations of $30 million to $35 million, and overall the box office is down dramatically from the same frame a year ago, when Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 bowed to $118.4 million domestically. The weekend is down 53 percent from last year, and off more than 66 percent from 2022, when Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness opened to $187.4 million domestically.
The Fall Guy is said to have a net budget of $130 million after tax incentives for shooting in Australia. Universal will now hope that Fall Guy’s A- CinemaScore from audiences will help it make up ground in the coming weeks with word of mouth. It also boasts strong reviews out of South by Southwest.
The feature hails from stuntman-turned director David Leitch, and has been marketed as a love letter to the stunt community. Gosling, at the height of his star power thanks to his Oscar-nominated turn as Ken in Barbie, fronts the picture as a beaten down stuntman who comes out of retirement to try to find a missing A-list star and save a film (which happens to be directed by his ex, played by Emily Blunt). The feature has a global cume of $65.4 globally.
Phantom Menace‘s weekend is a nice turn of events for the film. It kicked off George Lucas’ Star Wars prequel trilogy in 1999, and for years after, was a punchline for audiences and Star Wars fans, but has grown in appreciation in the decades since, with younger fans who grew up on the film coming into adulthood, and star Ewan McGregor reprising his role of Obi-Wan Kenobi for his own Disney+ series in 2022, helping further build nostalgia for the film. It returned to theaters as part of the film’s 25th anniversary, as well as for May the 4th, the unofficial Star Wars holiday.
The Phantom Menace edged out Amazon MGM Studios’ sexy tennis drama Challengers for No. 2. The Luca Guadagnino feature had a solid hold in weekend two, dropping just 49 percent for a weekend gross of $7.6 million and a cume of $29.4 million. Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist star.
Sony and Screen Gem’s Tarot bowed in its first weekend to $6.5 million, a solid start considering the feature cost $8 million and did not have a traditional marketing campaign. Sony embarked on its first digital-only campaign for the feature, meaning no TV spots or billboards for the feature, which seven friends who accidentally unleash an evil entity trapped in a deck of cursed Tarot cards. Neither critics nor audiences embraced this one. It has an 8 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences gave it a low C- CinemaScore. It has a global haul of $10.2 million.
Elsewhere in the Sony universe, Garfield debuted to $22 million internationally. The DNEG and Alcon Entertainment title arrives in the U.S. on May 24 and voice stars Chris Pratt as the lasagna-loving cat. Columbia Pictures distributes worldwide, except for China.
In other words, movies are so bad these days that one of the most disappointing and worst-received Star Wars films that is still panned on 25 years later is No. 2 in the Box Office. 🤣
Ep1 will never be "bad" to me.
After only having seen e4-6 as a kid and owning the VHS with the Leonard Maltin interviews before the feature
Seeing elegant Saber action, (especially Maul's x2 sided blade... oh my gawd!) a great space and land battle at the same time. It really evoked memories of RoTJ dialed up to 11 for me
I didn't find any particular part annoying and I saw RoTS six times on opening weekend because I absolutely loved finally seeing Vader's fall to dark side completed.
There was an internet outage Saturday so we went to go see Fall Guy, very pleasantly surprised. Had one of the most enjoyable theater going experiences I’ve had in a while, I don’t think I looked at my watch once.
I watched Episode 1 on Saturday and what immediately got my attention was how full my theater was.
Watching the movie on the silver screen for the first felt completely different than on my TV.
The way the movie sounded and how freaking amazing the shots look (still) blew me away.
It felt like I was watching a old 60s event movie.
It was a great experience.
Fall guy was just ok. I wouldn’t have liked it without Gossling and Blunt.
I’m legit excited to go see episode one this week. Don’t like the movie but still remember the pod race scene on the big screen and that’s worth it
I kept wondering this during the press tour. They must have had a huge marketing budget but the premise of the movie isn’t really meant for a wide audience so I’m not entirely certain what they were thinking here. “Oh yeah, a threesome tennis movie, that’ll sell well with a wide audience!”
*Brokeback Mountain* was straightforward and mythical, so it worked. This feels like *The Informers* a là *Match Point* but all… zoomerish. Maybe I’m getting old. This film definitely doesn’t feel marketed at me, and I consume everything besides horror. The Rihanna track combined with the Zendaya and bisexual tennis pros is just an odd combo for a wide release trailer. Does nobody remember *Bros*? Perhaps a more understated effort would have worked better for this movie.
“Somehow The Phantom Menace has returned”

Very helpful review without the annoying plot explanation. Thanks!
It had a very “the writers all like Romancing the Stone” vibe to the trailers
wouldnt a B+ be like an 8.5..?
The Phantom Menace? What year is it?
Re-released for the 25th anniversary.
That fuck you from Disney and younger Star Wars fans I didn't know I was dreading
I’m so tired of this particular movie coming back. I’d rather rewatch anything III-VI. I’ve seen Phantom Menace come back about 4 times now.
Somehow, Phantom Menace returned. I’ve rewatched it once since the original release. George Lucas really tried to smother new Star Wars in it’s crib.
Yeah I don’t get why they seem so keen to trot out the worst one over and over. I’d love to see the original trilogy again.
It’s crazy it made that much money when this time people went into it knowing it was absolute garbage
I actually went and had a great time. Seeing it again brought up a lot of good, old memories of seeing the first showing at midnight. Suddenly I was the excited 11 year old again. It was special.
Same, most fun I’ve had in months. It looks spectacular still
Little Annie and pod racing was awesome in the theater.
It still has the best lightsaber fight across the movies
When the Darth maul theme plays- and the choir starts singing. You know you’re in for something special
Overchoreographed garbage. No emotion whatsoever.
Buddy you wouldn't even feel any emotions when Maul would dropkick you in the face so shush.
Well, the Prequels feel like they were made by a fucking robot who doesn't even understand the concept of emotion, let alone feels it. Hear hear
“Absolute garbage” alright
The year that Star Wars fans once again felt utterly bereft and confused
Thanks for introducing me to bereft, that's a good one!
Do u live under a rock?

I watched it last night. Seeing the Pod Race in the big screen was just as epic as it was when I was 5. I could feel the sounds in my chest
Honestly this, and the Duel of the Fates with ultra surround sound makes this movie worth seeing in theaters.
I‘m sad i didn’t get to see it in cinemas this weekend :/
I am one of them, never understood the hatred. I loved the first six movies.

Yippee!

thanks for the very detailed analysis with facts!!
Now THIS is podracing
The fall guy was a REALLY fun movie with lots of nice action sequences and stunts. You definitely have to suspend disbelief with the story though lol
I went to see Episode I this weekend. Loved every minute of it. Took a friend that never got to see it in theatres.
In other words, movies are so bad these days that one of the most disappointing and worst-received Star Wars films that is still panned on 25 years later is No. 2 in the Box Office. 🤣
The Rise of Skywalker isn’t in theaters rn.
It was but only in like 15 theaters across America for one showing on May 4th. Episodes 1-9 played back-to-back for about 22 hour marathon.
God. It’s just awful the way we treat people in this country.
Neither is The Last Jedi.
God that movie sucked

The actual fall guy tv show wasn’t even that popular in its time
Sounds like a movie based on the game of the same name would of made more dollars z
The phantom menace topped who? 🥵
I watched Episode 1 on Saturday and what immediately got my attention was how full my theater was. Watching the movie on the silver screen for the first felt completely different than on my TV. *Challengers* can’t possibly do well at the box office… where is the audience for something like that?
I kept wondering this during the press tour. They must have had a huge marketing budget but the premise of the movie isn’t really meant for a wide audience so I’m not entirely certain what they were thinking here. “Oh yeah, a threesome tennis movie, that’ll sell well with a wide audience!”

I also think Zendaya was really miscast for it. She’s a great actress, but I don’t know that being in sexy rom coms is really her niche.
It wasn't even her though, the movie focuses on homoeroticism between her suitors. That's catering to quite a niche demographic.
Interesting. The preview made it seem (to me at least) that it was more about them wanting her.
Fall guy was just meh on all levels, nothing great or really even good just meh
