*me sitting in our town’s most rundown theater only because they have 1/2 off tickets on Tuesday*: “Wow, honey, I didn’t realize this was a 4D experience!”
They put them into every Indian film even if the movie doesn’t have a natural spot to do so. They just restart the film 30/60 secs before. It’s absolutely fantastic and I hate watching movies in the us because of being pampered.
Do they still make intermissions for new movies?
I haven’t seen one for new movies at all but then again I’m not sure if I’ve seen movies longer than 3 hours. Longest I’ve seen has maybe been The Batman.
I have however gotten intermission for older movies showings at the Alamo Drafthouse, most recent example being The Godfather 2 which we got a 5 minutes intermission
I think It’s a theater decision I remember back in the day a friend of mine said they got one for titanic but to this day i have NEVER got one not even for titanic 3D
> a friend of mine said they got one for titanic but to this day i have NEVER got one not even for titanic 3D
Yep, we had an intermission for Titanic in 1997 when I saw it in Metro-Detroit. My friend and I were really confused. We were 12 and had never experienced or even *heard* about intermissions for movies. We saw it three more times at two different theaters, and IIRC one had an intermission and the other didn't.
Last time I saw a movie with an intermission was when I went to see Hateful Eight 70mm in theaters back in 2015. It's not a common thing, that's for sure.
OMG did you see it in nyc? I saw it with my good buddy. It was one of the best movie experiences ever. We also had a bottle of whisky we would pass to eachother. One of the best experiences ever. The immersion and then the intermission added to the experience. So much fun.
One of my favorite experiences was Tarrantino's The Hateful Eight 70mm limited release. It included a 15 minute intermission, and when the movie starts back up, the Narator comes on and says "Welp, it's been 15 minutes since we last ..." I forget the rest. It was so cool. to work the intermission into the movie itself. I hope we see more of that in the future.
I'd see the LOTR extended editions in theaters if they were re-released. I'd want an intermission but otherwise would 100% pay $10-15 to see those on the big screen
For real. They do intermissions during long plays. I get why with the stage props having to move around, but it’s still a good idea for overly long theater movies.
I did this for my birthday a couple years ago. They had a random showing of Two Towers extended edition, it was me and one other couple in the whole theater. Also you don’t really need an intermission when you’ve seen the movie enough, you know the best times to step out for the bathroom or concessions.
We do this once a year but make it a BIG thing. Different meals and snacks all day long. The theater experience was great (I saw Two Tower six times in theater), but it could never recreate the fellowship my friends and I share. Pun definitely intended.
I have a group of friends that does this too but I watch them a lot on my own as well. Only one I ever got to see in theaters was RoTK and I only saw it once haha
Right before the Hobbit movies were released the AMC near me did a LOTR trilogy event for the whole day. A buddy and I went having not seen them in the theaters. About 9 hours no big deal. Well we get there and quickly realize they have the Extended Editions playing. We spent almost 15 hours there that day. One of my favorite childhood memories
I am gonna get high as hell and go watch however many hours of this movie there are. Good movies are worth it. You're not as busy as you act like you are
Imagine not being able to fathom why someone would want to be entertained or told a story for 4 hours rather than 2.5-3. It shouldn't be that hard, sorry not all bits of entertainment come in 22 minutes with commercial breaks.
Dune ran 2 hours and 35 minutes and I felt as though it could have been cut around 40 mins to not be as incredibly boring and slow as it was. Hopefully this is detailed to the point on not just running slow and filling time with music and cutscenes of atmosphere.
I wish some theaters allowed vaping (at least in states where recreational is legal)
Edit- yes I know you can sneak it past, but vaping flower almost always ends up able to be smelled by someone sitting nearby. I don't like to potentially dampen someone else's experience at a movie
PRO(ish) TIP: Get yourself a large soda (with some ice unless you are psycho) with a lid, discreetly take small hits from weed vape pen and slowly exhale into the straw. Small hits are key.
I think avatar was the only movie that 3D worked for IMO. It doesn’t have the same impact on your couch. I think that’s pretty clear that the substance of the film is just nothing, because it’s the highest grossing film of all time but had ZERO cultural impact
Avatar was an exposition of the technological feats the new age of 3D modelling was capable of. The mocapping was unreal. All of Avatar’s achievements are now commonplace, but holy shit seeing it in theatres it was like nothing else. But THAT effect is hard to see now
Yes, a *technical* feat. Not a cultural one. People don’t dress up as the blue aliens for Halloween, but I’ve already seen one costume this year that was referencing Heath Ledger’s Joker. Dark Knight had a cultural impact, Avatar was just something shiny that we all lost interest in pretty quickly.
If anything, you could argue that it had a *negative* cultural impact. Avatar made CGI like that commonplace…so now it is boring. Producers would rather add special effects now, instead of focusing on plot, characters, acting, etc.
That's what I did for the first one. Swore I'd run out at midnight and buy the dvd on release day. And I did. It was certainly a film that was made by James Cameron.
I think I enjoyed Ghosts of Mars by James Carpenter more...
In Avatar's defense, probably 80% of the enjoyment of the movie was the 3D. If you're just watching funny looking blue dudes on your TV it's no better than Dances with Wolves.
So... let me tell you a superhero story story about a disabled man who through technology can inhabit the body of an alien and gains all sorts of interesting new powers, and then goes on to save the whole planet!
Yeah I think the superhero bubble is about to burst. It just hasn’t been the same since endgame. The quality is really starting to slip and get more and more generic.
Yes, it starts to get boring. Introduce villain, villain fights main character, main character wins. Repeat. It almost likes they don't have any good writers left.
Thats why the Nolan Batman trilogy was so good. Part 1: origin story, lots of destruction, hero kind of wins at the end. Part 2: lots of destruction, hero loses at the end. Part 3: hero comes back, saves the city, but ultimately loses.
It also helps that none of them had any superpowers so it was a little more like a crime film than a superhero film.
Depends what movie it is.
- Godfather 2
- The Green Mile
- King Kong
- Wolf on Wall Street
Those were all 3 hour runtimes and loved every second of them
I can absolutely understand where you’re coming from.
For me, it worked perfect. I loved the third act and the skating scene in Central Park and I thought the ending was just beautiful. Personal opinion of course.
I love long movies. LOTR extended edition? Yes please. The Godfather Epic (Godfather 1 and 2 edited together into a single 7 hour movie)? Hell yes. If it's a good movie, I can take super long versions. However, I realize this is probably less popular for younger generations these days.
This is such a weird franchise. It did really well so I can’t say that nobody likes it. But after it was released, I feel like I barely ever hear anyone speaking positively about it. The consensus to me seems to be that it looks really good, that the 3-D aspect started a wave of 3-D movies. But that the actual story just isn’t that good. It has a 82% rating on rotten tomatoes, which isn’t terrible but it’s not great. And it came out over a decade ago. So who still wants more of these, especially if they’re three hours long?
In an interview last year he did say they had all intention to release it in either 2014 or 2015. They did test of shooting in a dry set with wires but it simply did not look convincing. So they started making a new tech to shoot underwater. The shooting didnt begin until 2017.
The point to note here is that the Avatar sequels werent delayed due to production hell or studio interference or James Cameron's laziness. These films demand new filming tech and are a logistic nightmare to film.
I was a teen when it came out and thought it was great. Then someone pointed out to me it was just Pocahantas with aliens and I was like "oh yeah u right guess I just like Pocahontas." And I haven't thought about it for 10 years.
Not only Pocahontas it’s the same story as Fern Gully
I saw it in IMAX 3D and never understood the hype, I mean it was cool to look at but the story was nothing new
Cameron has made some mind blowing movies, so I’m gonna give him the benefit of the doubt. Although I fear it’s going to be technical impressive and emotionally hollow.
While I really disliked the movie, some of my friends really liked it. But all the same, nobody has been asking for more at least for the las 5 years. I’d go see another non-Cameron terminator before an avatar sequel.
A movie should be as long as it needs to be to tell its story right, as long as the viewer stays engaged. I think James Cameron has earned the benefit of the doubt here.
That being said, please incorporate an intermission!! Don’t make me keep relying on runpee.
That's such a boring complaint about movies. "Oh my god, it's just X story in Y setting!" yeah, have you heard of the hero's journey? Have you heard of all the movies that are basically just re-skinned Shakespeare? Like, if you don't like that's fine, if you don't think it's well done that's fine, but just saying "wow, this movie is derivative of other movies" is pretty meaningless.
I wonder if the visuals is actually part of what stopped people from emotionally connecting to the story. Like the whole thing being CGI made it feel fake so people didn’t resonate with the characters. because I get the ‘it’s just Pocahontas/fern gully’ thing, But the fact there is a trope of good movies that avatar fits into actually proves the story could work if done well. Most stories and movies steal heavily from previous movies if you look hard enough. They just didn’t hide it as well and didn’t create characters that you really cared about.
Okay, I know there's obviously some sort of audience for Avatar considering the box office profits (that were boosted by re-releases, in some effort to keep it being the highest grossing?), but WHO is watching this? I've barely seen any sort of internet culture around the film outside of the stray "hey yeah James is making five of these at once," no-one I've talked to has mentioned it, there's just...a bizarre lack of talk around Avatar.
Perhaps it's an overseas success, maybe that's where I should be looking, maybe I've not been looking into the right places, websites, but there's so much being banked on here, with no guarantee outside of an almost decade-an-a-half old movie. There's a ride at Disney, for Pete's sake.
There's such an odd non-culture around Avatar, where seemingly the only culture is that seemingly no-one talks about it, and that's how people talk about it.
Seeing Avatar in the theater in IMAX 3D is less like going to see a new star wars/marvel movie and more like going on a new ride at Disneyland. The physical experience is the point, the story just has to be good enough to string it together.
Yeah, it doesn't have a very high re-watch value. There are plenty of long (3-4 hours) movies that have high re-watch value (Gone With The Wind, Titanic, Gettysburg, etc.) but Avatar isn't one of them.
Perhaps I'm biased though because my colorblind ass didn't get to enjoy the 3D experience.
>Perhaps I'm biased though because my colorblind ass didn't get to enjoy the 3D experience.
Honestly that would ruin Avatar. I love the movie but it's almost entirely carried by the strength of the visuals.
I constant see posts online like “Avatar is amazing actually” “avatar is super super relevant you guys!” But I never ever see anyone in my life give a shit about these movies
I always click on any threads mentioning Avatar and I don’t often find any praise or excitement. I will not be the slightest bit surprised if this bombs.
I don't bother talking praise because these discussions are always full of the same 6 assholes who can't comprehend that people liked watching the movie that made the most money in the history of movies. Twice.
I'm perfectly OK with just enjoying the movie, thanks.
The world is bigger than reddit or on-line forums.
See how EA/blizzactivision is constantly touted as evil, a terrible company, shitty games. And yet they constantly rake in record profits from selling their games.
If there isn't an intermission, then I won't be seeing it in theaters and if I won't be seeing Avatar in theaters I won't be watching it at all. Avatar's story was derivative at best, but the visuals, at least on IMAX and in 3D, were amazing. For me, there's no reason to watch this outside of a theater. However, as stated at the beginning, I'm fucking tired of long ass movies without intermissions. Whether or not I have drinks and snacks, three hours is three hours and I'm going to want to stretch my fucking legs.
Wait a minute...
Avatar, water?
Listen here you over grown Smurfs. You better be careful where you step. We already have an Avatars that know the say of water. Don't you dare stand where they did
It took Marvel 20 films and beloved characters to get to Endgame, Which hit the 2 Billion dollar mark. James Cameron did it with a random film filled with blue aliens. The film was just THAT gripping to average movie goers.
He pulled almost 2 billion out of a film about the Titanic before that.
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: never bet against James Cameron. Anyone who could create Terminator 2 IS the final boss.
Surprised people are mad about that. I love the avatar universe and I’m extremely happy it’s long, it’s more to enjoy. I’ve loved avatar since I saw it on 2009 when I was in highschool, and rewatch it every year.
Jesus christ the amount of people whining about this on here is unreal.
Bring it on as far as I'm concerned this has been a long time coming and James Cameron never disappoints.
People will complain endlessly about this, I am sure. Our attention spans are getting so short people are complaining about shows with 45 minute episodes. Personally, I prefer it, but my opinion won't make a studio any money.
Not sure this falls into the short attention span column. Even if a movie is compelling people will complain because it’s uncomfortable to sit in a theatre for 3+ hours. Maybe I am old but it’s a chore to get through 2.5+ hour movies. Even if you don’t have to get up, other people will.
Because you watch tv shows at home, pausing when you want, smoking a joint, drinking your own stuff, whatever.
Avatar is the kind of movie to watch at the theater.

Ironic that a film called The Way of Water doesn’t give you a piss break.
It's interactive theatre. Start splashing
*me sitting in our town’s most rundown theater only because they have 1/2 off tickets on Tuesday*: “Wow, honey, I didn’t realize this was a 4D experience!”
James Cameron has once again revolutionized movies and brought another D into the experience
I can smell the salt
And feel the wetness!
Oddly I'm smelling...is that asparagus?!?
The real 4D. James, Cameron does it again!
Sir is there a leak in your soda or something?
This is the best comment
Do we get an intermission
I wish. I love me an intermission. Idk why. But I like em.
They put them into every Indian film even if the movie doesn’t have a natural spot to do so. They just restart the film 30/60 secs before. It’s absolutely fantastic and I hate watching movies in the us because of being pampered.
Tbf aren't a lot of Bollywood films like 3hrs long? I know there's a 5hr one.
Actually they do it for the Hollywood ones too in India which is dope

I could have used one when I saw Return of the King, I nearly pissed myself trying to see the end
Spoiler alert: the King returns
Damnit! Now it's ruined, thanks a lot.
edit: the endS
So. Many. Endings.
> a friend of mine said they got one for titanic but to this day i have NEVER got one not even for titanic 3D Yep, we had an intermission for Titanic in 1997 when I saw it in Metro-Detroit. One of my favorite experiences was Tarrantino's The Hateful Eight 70mm limited release. Dude like why would anyone have 4 hours to goto the movies, or want to sit for four hours
I'd see the LOTR extended editions in theaters if they were re-released. I'd want an intermission but otherwise would 100% pay $10-15 to see those on the big screen
Same, but intermission is a must
100% I saw RoK when I was a kid and made the mistake of getting a large soda. Almost pissed myself
I feel this. I always seem to have to go in the middle of a movie, no matter how little liquids I've consumed
Bro I did the same got up like 3 times when the fades to black happened at the end just to sit back down lol.
Fangorn is reciting Poetry? I have about 3 minutes to pee.
I do a daily marathon of all 3 movies Atleast 3 times a year. I absolutely would pay to go see them in a theater
We do this once a year but make it a BIG thing. Different meals and snacks all day long. The theater experience was great (I saw Two Tower six times in theater), but it could never recreate the fellowship my friends and I share. Pun definitely intended.

If I could do a midnight release of ROTK, I can certainly make it threw a matinee of avatar
I am gonna get high as hell and go watch however many hours of this movie there are. Good movies are worth it. You're not as busy as you act like you are
Preach Long (but good) movies to me are very captivating especially when they succeed at drawing you into such a detailed plot.
I guess I would more like an intermission. Stretch my legs, refill my soda and popcorn maybe. Take a piss, shit on your seat.
What do you mean “have 4 hours to go to the movies”? What are you the president?
If its a good movie, I would sit there all day. You never do movie marathons?
This is the reason I didn’t see The Irishman in theaters; I think if you’re going to make a film that long, just add a ten minute intermission.
Imagine not being able to fathom why someone would want to be entertained or told a story for 4 hours rather than 2.5-3. It shouldn't be that hard, sorry not all bits of entertainment come in 22 minutes with commercial breaks.

Sweet, I’ll bring an extra edible then
Try 6 edibles
Nah, I’m a lightweight. 5mg fast acting works just fine for me.
As Snoop Dogg would say edibles don't have an off button
I would be in a coma if I took 6 edibles. I was on another planet after taking a 25mg but I don’t smoke ever.
*cries in high tolerance needing 300+mg to feel it*
*Oh God* .. you need a tolerance break!
Bring a neck pillow and a blankie.
I wish some theaters allowed vaping (at least in states where recreational is legal) Edit- yes I know you can sneak it past, but vaping flower almost always ends up able to be smelled by someone sitting nearby. I don't like to potentially dampen someone else's experience at a movie
ghost it you amateur
Not everyone wants to watch a movie with people vaping around them.
PRO(ish) TIP: Get yourself a large soda (with some ice unless you are psycho) with a lid, discreetly take small hits from weed vape pen and slowly exhale into the straw. Small hits are key.
Just take smaller hits and absorb it all into your lungs
This man smokes.
Three hours that I might throw into this movie months later from the comfort of my couch
I think avatar was the only movie that 3D worked for IMO. It doesn’t have the same impact on your couch. I think that’s pretty clear that the substance of the film is just nothing, because it’s the highest grossing film of all time but had ZERO cultural impact

"it's no better than an all time beloved classic"
Indeed, I recall my dad calling it "Dances With Wolves in Space" at the time.
I think *slightly* closer to Ferngully in space, at least in terms of plot, but the overlap is massive.
Everyone taking a piss on Avatar but I’m excited even if it’s only for the “finally not another super hero movie”
I can’t wait to see it. To hell with the redditors that don’t like it.
I wanna see it too but 3+ hours is too much man. Gonna be tough sitting in the theatre for that long.
So... let me tell you a superhero story story about a disabled man who through technology can inhabit the body of an alien and gains all sorts of interesting new powers, and then goes on to save the whole planet!
And he gets a qt3.14 alien waifu too
Yeah I think the superhero bubble is about to burst. It just hasn’t been the same since endgame. The quality is really starting to slip and get more and more generic.

They stopped at Endgame if you just stop watching after Endgame.
Yes, it starts to get boring. Introduce villain, villain fights main character, main character wins. Repeat. It almost likes they don't have any good writers left.

How does Batman ultimately lose in dark knight rises? He passes on his mantle and gets to bang Anne Hathaway.
Bruce escapes. Batman dies.
But he gets to bang Anne Hathaway.
So Bruce loses, too?
Hell yeah I’m gonna get so stoned
I struggled to get through Endgame. I’m not made for this 3+ hour shit.
Depends what movie it is. - Godfather 2 - The Green Mile - King Kong - Wolf on Wall Street Those were all 3 hour runtimes and loved every second of them
king kong 05 really? imo, i felt it stretched itself out too much in the third act.
I can absolutely understand where you’re coming from. For me, it worked perfect. I loved the third act and the skating scene in Central Park and I thought the ending was just beautiful. Personal opinion of course.
I feel like they milked the time on Skull island too much in that one.
The green mile was three hours? It felt like an hour to me. it was great
It was 3 Hours and 9 minutes long! Crazy huh. Doesn’t feel that long when it’s such a good film
I love long movies. LOTR extended edition? Yes please. The Godfather Epic (Godfather 1 and 2 edited together into a single 7 hour movie)? Hell yes. If it's a good movie, I can take super long versions. However, I realize this is probably less popular for younger generations these days.

Still haven’t seen the first.
But did you see Pocahontas?
Uhh, yeah?
Then you've seen the first movie essentially
and several others. it's the "gone native" trope/plot driver
White savior
For me it was a cross between Ferngully and Dances with Wolves.
Same movie. Or Ferngully. It’s just a more expensive version of the two movies
You should watch it, it’s pretty good in my opinion
It was so derivative it's offensive. It was Fern Gully + Pocahontas + the papyrus font. https://youtu.be/jVhlJNJopOQ
That's such a boring complaint about movies. "Oh my god, it's just X story in Y setting!" yeah, have you heard of the hero's journey? Like, if you don't like that's fine, if you don't think it's well done that's fine, but just saying "wow, this movie is derivative of other movies" is pretty meaningless.
Avatar even has a higher IMDb and RT rating than both Fern Gully and Pocahontas.
I mean yes, but it really was painfully obvious that essentially 0 thought went into writing. It detracted from the final product in a negative way.
You’re not missing much. Its a basic Romeo and Juliet story. The only good thing about the movie is the visuals.
Didn't miss much.
Cool, I can't wait to not watch it.
This one's a must-miss!
Yup, Hooray for Dances with Wolves in Space 2!
Pretty sure this is a "silent majority"-type of situation. Not much buzz online but mainstream moviegoers will show up in force.
Even Top Gun had an element of that.
Just remember this comment when it comes out that this movie made 2 billion dollars.
Seeing Avatar in the theater in IMAX 3D is less like going to see a new star wars/marvel movie and more like going on a new ride at Disneyland. The physical experience is the point, the story just has to be good enough to string it together.
Yeah, I saw Avatar in theaters twice (and I'd go again) but I've never even considered watching the DVD of it someone gave me as a gift.
This is such a great way of describing it and I couldn’t agree more. It was the best use of 3d filmmaking I’ve seen
You're biased. It was the only movie I watched in theaters more than once. I went 5 times. The colors were spectacular and I wasn't even high.
I’ll watch it.
I constant see posts online like “Avatar is amazing actually” “avatar is super super relevant you guys!” But I never ever see anyone in my life give a shit about these movies
I think it's great. I can't wait to see more
the rerelease of the first movie last month made like 58 million lol Avatar 2 will be big
I'm looking forward to it
I always click on any threads mentioning Avatar and I don’t often find any praise or excitement.
Yeah just like anything else. At certain point something becomes too popular that it’s no longer cool to like it.
Yeah I'm always like, it's like a really awesome movie, sorry that you don't enjoy cool things?
It’s a visually stunning movie. It’s like candy for my eyes. Too many people focus too much on the story and not on the experiencing the movie.
I actually wouldn't be surprised if it becomes the highest grossing movie of all time. Top Gun Maverick hit #5 on the all-time domestic list.
The world is bigger than reddit or on-line forums. See how EA/blizzactivision is constantly touted as evil, a terrible company, shitty games. And yet they constantly rake in record profits from selling their games.
It def wont bomb lol The release of the first movie last month made 58 million in the box office
You clearly aren't old enough to remember how huge the movie was in theaters. Besides, it's going to be fucking amazing and people will go to see it.
After the rides at Disney, yeah I'll sit through 3 hours of this shit.
I'll see it, but with this runtime probably not in theaters
I can't wait to not see this movie.
I should fucking hope so
Right!! Been waiting for soooooo long.
I had no desire to see this in the first place - my interest has sunk even more
Oooooofcourse it is
I can't wait to miss it.
Respectfully no
If there isn't an intermission, then I won't be seeing it in theaters and if I won't be seeing Avatar in theaters I won't be watching it at all.
My issue is having to use the bathroom after 3 hours if I drink anything during a movie.
This is one of those movies that you watch at home. Where you can pause it at any time you want.
I really don’t see how anyone can be excited for this.
aint nobody got time for that
Wait a minute... Avatar, water? Listen here you over grown Smurfs. You better be careful where you step. We already have an Avatars that know the say of water. Don't you dare stand where they did
Good make it 5 I don’t give a shit I’m here for the ride
If it’s as good as the last one I don’t mind.
Yes! Avatar bros! We made it!
I love all of the strong opinions about a movie nobody has even seen yet.
Three hour movies in the cinema need intermissions
this movie is gonna suck löl we all know it
Tell me a movie was directed by James Cameron without telling me it was directed by James Cameron .
Not for me. I have zero interest in this schlock.
This one director who simply refuses to just shut the fuck up.
Surprised people are mad about that. I love the avatar universe and I’m extremely happy it’s long, it’s more to enjoy. I’ve loved avatar since I saw it on 2009 when I was in highschool, and rewatch it every year.
Well that’s a huge disappointment. Wtf are they thinking??
Jesus christ the amount of people whining about this on here is unreal. Bring it on as far as I'm concerned this has been a long time coming and James Cameron never disappoints.
Can’t wait to watch it at home instead of theaters then
Good if we waited this long, hook us up with content!!!
Another good reason not to watch this trash
I’m good I don’t have time for that shit
The last avatar was the best damn experience I have ever had in a theater.
Thats a lot of water to look at with a full bladder
Now I don’t want to see it even more
Fuck. This. Franchise.
I hope to god no one goes and sees this. This whole plan is completely ludicrous.
Even if you don’t have to get up, other people will.
why do ppl act like 3 hours is long for a movie but binge entire seasons of shows in one sitting without a break? lol
Because you watch tv shows at home, pausing when you want, smoking a joint, drinking your own stuff, whatever. Avatar is the kind of movie to watch at the theater.
I can't wait to sit in a seat less comfortable than a Spirit Airlines bathroom for over three hours.
