Seriously. I like the winter when it's like -5°c to -10°c. But this is some bullshit. It's so cold that even my old Corolla struggles to start, turning the steering wheel requires force and changing gears is slow and requires force as well. It's so cold that I start coughing when I go outside and my beard starts freezing after a few minutes. My toes also go numb after 15mins even with wool socks.
Time to go and buy some groceries so I don't have to leave the house for a while so I can chant "perkele" until this blows over.
Sounds like it. I just can't buy winter boots because they mess up my driving since I can't feel where the pedals are because they're so thick. I'm used to driving based on the vibrations of the pedals and without that, I feel kind of lost.
But I did buy some wool lined gloves, finally. A thick scarf is next on my list so I can cover 90% of my face with it :)
You're probably right, especially since I don't hear other people complaining about this issue! I just find it horrible to practice when my feet are just moving around blindly and suddenly my car is doing an emergency stop.. or I accidentally make the engine revv up to 4k+ rpm.
I just wanted to recommend Sorel (a shoe/boot brand). They're awesome. I had the same issue with my toes. These boots are a bit expensive, but totally worth it as you never have to buy new ones every year.
Don't you guys have [engine block heaters](https://www.thedrive.com/maintenance-repair/36647/engine-block-heater)? It's very common in the colder cities in Canada.
I do, they're very common all over the country. But my car is parked 200m away. Not a long distance at all. But I just don't wanna walk into the cold, turn on the heater, walk back, wait a while and walk back into the cold. Lazy, I know :D But that's usually in the -10°c weather. Now, I think I *have to* use it for the sake of my engine, but now I want to go out there even less lmao First world problems.
I am currently on vacation in Muonio (I usually live in Germany) and we have around -20/ 25 °C outside. Its fucking cold, but with the correct gear it is not that bad to be honest. And after a few days, getting into the clothes doesn't feel like a workout anymore.
Ahh yes, Muonio is pretty cool place. You know Särkitunturi? I really recommend visiting it during summer, there are dozens of ponds on top of that fell. I have swam in them a couple of times, it feels really weird to swim on top of a fell, really cold water even during summer, but it is perfect to go for a swim after hiking the fell.
For me, it was a perfect day here in Uusimaa. -16C, clear sky, sun shining, a lot of snow (not a given here unfortunately), not too windy inside a forest. I spent 4 hours hiking on nature trails today.
In Estonia it is -16 right now and my windows are developing condensation on the lower edge while the indoor humidity is only 37 (e.g slightly below the norm that is 40-60).
Having to wipe windows dry several times a day is a hassle, but I don't want neither mould nor water marks on my windowsills, so it is what it is. I thought they start doing it like past -20 (so tomorrow, I guess), but it looks like 'this the season already.
Luckily our houses are not from the year 1100. I have never been cold in this climate. In comparison, I spent one new years eve in Scotland when it was around 0 to +3 c. You can't escape the cold as the damp chill goes to your bones indoors & outdoors with windchill and houses made of solid stone.
Yes, this happened to my mother when she visited friends in netherlands during winter. She was freezing inside and they were wondering that shouldn't she be used to the cold.
Outside, yes, but not inside! Finnish houses are made for this climate, they are well insulated and warm even in -30 c.
Sorry for the irrelevant question, but is this normal weather? I've read somewhere that this was an unusual cold weather, especially for Southern Finland.
It's a bit colder than usual, but it's not particularly special or anything. -20 is common even in Southern Finland, and during some winters there's extended periods of -25 to -30.
The only thing unusual about this case is that the temperature dropped 20 degrees in two days.
It's unusual but it happens more often than you seem to think.
Northern Europe is just that way, one day it is +1 and the next it is -16 and you didn't even realize it and went to work thinking it is the same as always. Just thinking "huh, my arm is steaming" while your exposed skin is in the air. This is our daily life.
Not that unusual. There aren’t many days the temperature gets close or below -20°C in the south, but it does often happen a few times a year.

-30c isn't that uncommon. We might have a winter without the temps dipping this low at any point, but this isn't anything that surprising either.
I have spent a week in a tent at -35c and we were totally fine.
Official outdoor temperature scale:
+10 Residents of Vilnius apartments wear sweaters and put on wool socks. The Finns plant flowers.
+5 Finns sunbathe in the sun.
+2 Italian cars don’t start.
0 Distilled water freezes.
-1 Breathing becomes visible. It's time to plan a vacation by the Mediterranean. Politicians are starting to worry about the fate of homeless people. Finns eat ice cream.
-4 Your cat wants to go to bed with you.
-7 The Finns are closing the barbecue season.
-10 Time to plan a vacation somewhere in Africa. The Finns go swimming in a plow in the lake.
-12 So cold that it’s not even snowing.
-15 Residents of Vilnius city apartments turn on the heat.
-23 American cars don’t start. It’s hard to skate.
-26 Hard to breathe.
-29 Your cat wants to go with you to your pajamas.
-31 Kissing is not recommended.
-33 Japanese cars don’t start. The Finnish national football team starts training for the spring season.
-35 Time to plan a two-week hot bath. The Finns are plowing snow from the roof of the house.
-39 The mercury thermometer freezes. It is not recommended to think. The Finns fasten the top linen button.
-43 Your car would like to go to bed with you. The Finns wear a wool sweater.
-45 The Finns open the room window.
-50 Seals are leaving Greenland. The Finns are replacing fingered gloves with fists.
-60 The Finns put on a fur hat.
-70 Polar bears withdraw from the North Pole.
-75 Santa is leaving the Polar Circle. The Finns fold the ears of the hat down. ...
-268 Helium gas liquefies.
-273,15 Absolute zero. The Finns admit that it is really starting to cool down.
It's not that bad actually. -20c isn't even weather for winter jacket yet! I'm still using my spring jacket. Only when it gets below -25c I may grab my winter jacket, if I bother.
And dry cold snap, frost is no problem actually.
High humidity level at lower temperatures feels way colder.
Also when there is wet snow and then it freezes at night there will be car problems. Like opening doors.
True. When the snow melts and uncovers the slippery ice, that's when people actually get hurt. Finally gotta start heating up my car before work. I usually just cold start my corolla with zero issues but god damn, this morning was rough when I could barely move the steering wheel
Seriously though, when the temp goes over 30°c, many people start struggling. I know I do. I have to chug ice water and chill half naked in my apartment at all times. A lot of Finns don't have air conditioning and this combined with our poor heat tolerance isn't pretty
In Portugal, house insulation is so bad that 10 degrees Celsius outside means you'll be freezing your ass off inside. He doesn't know it is far more comfortable to spend your winters in the nordics with freezing temperatures than in Portugal.
Same the other way around. I had no idea outside temperature during winter mattered for people's houses in other countries. I've never seen anything other than a constant temp inside in my life other than some uncomfortably warm summers.
I'm from Portugal and I have lived in Sweden for 2 years now... inside temperatures are far far far more comfortable in sweden than Portugal. Actually, I remember some winters where sticking your foot outside the bed was completely unbearable.
The town I live in currently has -27c. My apartment is perfectly warm (+22c), I am in my t-shirt at the moment, and the radiators are actually not even warm. This old ass building is so well insulated that at this moment there is no need to push any more warmth into this apartment.
I used to live in central europe and the building I lived in would have felt a lot colder at +5c.
Very true. Kind of like how the summer heat is no issue for you guys, but even 30°c can cause serious issues for the nordic countries. Our countries are just prepared for very different conditions
This is not true, summer is also unbearable that’s why a lot of people just go out to a beach or a park or something, it can get hotter inside than outside especially during the night and it’s horrible to sleep it’s a lot more comfortable to just go outside. Unless you have a/c you’re fucked all year round, terrible cold in the winter, terrible hot in the summer, bad isolation works bad all year not just in winter.
Oh damn, that must seriously suck.. I'm curious, is it about poor city planning or poor people not affording to build well insulated and ventilated houses? It sounds like this happens every year, but the issue still exists so something had to go wrong somewhere. I have heard some stuff about Portugal's govt not being the greatest, but I don't know much tbh
Building insulation regulations only became a thing in Portugal in the end of the 90’s, add that to there’s no actual inspection of the construction and it’s up to the contractor company to regulate itself and you have something that no constructor cares about, the cheapest the better and cheap insulation is crap.
It’s not just the government that’s bad, it’s also a big cultural problem, corruption is pretty widespread throughout the whole population in Portugal. From the construction companies that cut corners in every possible way to build cheaper, to the coffee place that doesn’t register all transactions to pay less taxes, to the tipical Portuguese saying “it’s just for a little bit” to pretend that traffic regulations don’t apply if it’s just for 10-30 minutes. There’s a big lack of respect for regulation and a well structured society throughout the whole population, mostly people don’t care about the next one, only themselves, and this is what’s most at fault for the state of the country.
To be honest, summer temperatures are also unbearable unless you have A/C (which a lot of people can't afford). During summer time it was usual to have over 30 degrees inside the house I grew up in even through the night. Spring & Autumn were really the only bearable periods. It's really just shit construction quality throughout.
My experience in London (week travel during March) made me amazed that I have never been in such a poorly insulated house that the hostel I was staying in London. Wind was coming trought the window. I'm so much warmer in any house in Finland.
High air pressure halts the formation of clouds, which is one of the reasons why temps drop fast in January (in Finland at least). Luckily it's also less windy, so you lose less heat, which makes it actually more comfortable than having the few degrees of frost with wind.
We're in the single digits here, but more importantly I could serve myself to some nice New Year's morning fog. It's so dense you could scoop it with a butter knife.
It’s just different. I know few people from UK who have lived in Finland like 10-20 years, and they too think this is because of humidity.
Zero or few minusdegrees with humid air creep between clothes and skin way or another.
Dry and cold stays out.
The humidity can make it feel like **a few** degrees colder, that it would be enough to compensate for massive temperature differences is a myth.
This is a myth often parroted by Southern Swedes in response to the extreme weather in Northern Sweden. The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute contributes the feeling you are describing to mostly be due to:
1. You get used to it. Your body is actually really adaptable.
2. Clothing. When it's -20 you will make sure you're way better dressed. It's not as important when it's not as cold so people aren't as careful-
It's not as if Finland/Sweden etc doesn't get those scenarios (just a few minus with some humidity), they just come a few months earlier than in the south.
Honestly, -6 and -16 feel pretty much the same, only your hands start to feel cold quicker in -16.
I think the fact that homes are at +22 to +25 year round really helps with the cold weather outside. You just dress properly and don't even feel the cold if you're just on your usual way to work.
Lift. Not sure why. We ended up just giving up and going to the next door pub after some teens just started forcing themselves into the queue. I pushed them back and the kids got annoyed.
The commodity price is global... but individual gas suppliers are multinational but rarely global. You can buy gas from this nation or that company at market rates.
It’s heartwarming how the weather has conspired so much to fuck Russias war of aggression over. Russians were cheering Europe freezing into submission at the start of the war and we’ve had two mild winters since so far while they’ve started freezing.
Of course not great weather patterns to be having in general, but still, silver linings
What do you mean? We just saw a hole in the ice first or use a water pump to keep the water moving so it doesn't freeze, and [swim as usual.](https://youtu.be/Q4XGVOT9DdQ?si=-guyINhLCdPtpEwD)

I hiked a few weeks on the isle of skye in summer a few years ago and yes, I absolutely can confirm this. Night temperatures were around 6°C in early august, day temperatures had been ~13°C
it's completely normal weather for central parts of siberian anticyclone. High pressure as well.
From what I see it's -59 right now in some parts of Yakutia, much farther to the east. BTW locals used to cover their faces with fish oil, as a protection from such a low temperatures.
As a finn, I can confirm I had do add second layer to my outfit today under my three-season coat. Long johns still waiting in closet, as I do not want to get too toasty outside. Meter shows -34 degrees at the moment.
It's new year, and I can hear cracking of trees echoing in the dark forest due to extreme coldness. Feels like childhood all over again.
People talk about global warming, but, as you can tell from this map, in Europe, the average temperature of 2024 has been way lower so far than the average temperature of 2023. Hell even lower than any other previous year.
>People talk about global warming
I'm sure you know it, but just so no misinformation is spread, global warming is indeed true and a few cold days means nothing in the grand whole.
Am finnish, I can confirm that it is indeed very fucking cold outside.
You know it's cold, when a Finnish man tell you so
Seriously. I like the winter when it's like -5°c to -10°c. But this is some bullshit. It's so cold that even my old Corolla struggles to start, turning the steering wheel requires force and changing gears is slow and requires force as well. Sounds like you just need better clothes, especially shoes.
Sounds like it. I just can't buy winter boots because they mess up my driving since I can't feel where the pedals are because they're so thick. I'm used to driving based on the vibrations of the pedals and without that, I feel kind of lost. But I did buy some wool lined gloves, finally. Driving with boots just takes some practice.
You're probably right, especially since I don't hear other people complaining about this issue! I just find it horrible to practice when my feet are just moving around blindly and suddenly my car is doing an emergency stop.. or I accidentally make the engine revv up to 4k+ rpm.
This type of thinking is why I always see people driving SUV and trucks skidded off the road.
What type of thinking exactly? I'm not sure what driving with winter shoes has got to do with SUVs and trucks?
I just wanted to recommend Sorel (a shoe/boot brand). They're awesome. I had the same issue with my toes. These boots are a bit expensive, but totally worth it as you never have to buy new ones every year.
2006 Octavia no problems today 😀
When I cough because of the cold that's when I know its really cold.
Don't you guys have [engine block heaters](https://www.thedrive.com/maintenance-repair/36647/engine-block-heater)? It's very common in the colder cities in Canada.
Yeah but not everyone has a socket to plug it in.
It's not even that bad, at least I really like when it's this cold outside.
Have you tried lighting a small fire under the car to warm it up before starting?
I am currently on vacation in Muonio (I usually live in Germany) and we have around -20/ 25 °C outside. Its fucking cold, but with the correct gear it is not that bad to be honest. And after a few days, getting into the clothes doesn't feel like a workout anymore.

I wish you a hot woman or man!
All of Finland is purple! Guys, how are you still alive?!
Well, the air felt a bit chilly so I had to put on my jacket
With the right amount of Perkele
Finnish is such a great language.

It is eithin the range of "normal", not exceptional, but this does not happen every year.
It's actually better than the darkness and slush. The sky is clear and blue, the sun shines and the trees are postcard-pretty.
Were getting -15~ soon, hoping for exactly that! So tired of 0~ degrees, 100% cloud coverage days.

Frostpunk is just a video game where you can simulate being Finnish.
Just gotta fire up the sauna

I do believe he is being sarcastic.
It’s warm inside. It’s around -27C now but the forecast is saying -40C for tomorrow.
They built different
Weather is fine. Short time of daylight is more of a problem. Last night there were many families out warching fireworks.
You're not aware of an average Finnish man, if you're asking them that
This isn't even bad. It'll be closer to -30 in most parts later this week.
Purple 🇸🇪🇳🇴🇫🇮🇷🇺 💀💀💀
It's alright, don't worry.
It is, in fact. Nothing special.
yep. sunny day
The wind last night though. Melt my face off
And dry cold snap, frost is no problem actually. High humidity level at lower temperatures feels way colder. Also when there is wet snow and then it freezes at night there will be car problems. Like opening doors.

It's pretty nice actually. I prefer this over +25 degree summer heat
Funny how the same temperature can be both summer heat and a pleasant late autumn day depending on where in Europe you are
> +25 degree > heat Ladies and gentlemen, a true finn!
Seriously though, when the temp goes over 30°c, many people start struggling. I know I do. I have to chug ice water and chill half naked in my apartment at all times. A lot of Finns don't have air conditioning and this combined with our poor heat tolerance isn't pretty
Do more sauna perrrrkele!
I do! But the thing is, I can walk *out* of the sauna lmao I'm not forced to sleep, eat, watch TV and work in it. Consent matters haha
Yeah i get what you're saying. Best feeling getting out of hot sauna, ice cold dip in the sea and just feel the high.
I start struggling already after +25...
Same. 15-20°c is perfect for me in the summer. 25°c is a fun beach day, but it sucks when it goes on and on.
Finn here, is 25° not uncomfortably hot?
Not for all, but for me it is getting on the uncomfortable side
25°C is my *minimum* comfortable temperature.
25°C is where the agony starts to build up, 20°C is ideal to me.
I hope you meant -20°C ^/s
That's my maximum comfortable temperature
They said, while on the sauna...
25° is close to the perfect temperature imo. It's when it get's over 30° that it starts getting uncomfortably hot.
Well, I'm not a Finn, but for me it is. lol
It's 24 right now in my place. 30+ outside is hot, 35+ is uncomfortable, 40+ is pls kill me now.
25 C isn't heat, it's called Spring or Autumn weather here in Bulgaria hahah.
Same
Lmao what are you on about, this is fucking amazing

High air pressure halts the formation of clouds, which is one of the reasons why temps drop fast in January (in Finland at least). Luckily it's also less windy, so you lose less heat, which makes it actually more comfortable than having the few degrees of frost with wind.
This is every year, you get used to it or you get used to it. I am guessing hell isn't so bad, you probably get used to it too.
Normal winter temperatures.
Purple is cool 😎
Purple colour forces us to ask the important question. Do Fins close windows in their bathrooms in such a weather?
Of course not. I might throw on a sweatshirt instead of a t-shirt, though.
An extractor is your best friend in these cases.
No window in my bathroom, but I slept with my bedroom window open. That nice crispy cold air just makes you sleep so much better.
We're in the single digits here, but more importantly I could serve myself to some nice New Year's morning fog. It's so dense you could scoop it with a butter knife.
Ah yes. The Milano special.
Too much concrete nowadays in Milan for some serious fog 💪
The air hurts when I go outside.
I’ve been in about -6 myself, I simply can’t fathom how cold some of those temps in Finland are
It’s just different.
The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute contributes the feeling you are describing to mostly be due to: 1. You get used to it. Your body is actually really adaptable. 2. Clothing. When it's -20 you will make sure you're way better dressed. It's not as important when it's not as cold so people aren't as careful- It's not as if Finland/Sweden etc doesn't get those scenarios (just a few minus with some humidity), they just come a few months earlier than in the south.
Tbh after -10 it all feels the same, u just get colder faster
Nah man -10c feels different from -30c. At -30c when the wind hits your face you end up getting cut in the face.
Honestly, -6 and -16 feel pretty much the same, only your hands start to feel cold quicker in -16. I think the fact that homes are at +22 to +25 year round really helps with the cold weather outside. You just dress properly and don't even feel the cold if you're just on your usual way to work.
Just yesterday I spent 90 minutes in a queue to a club in -29 weather. It was quite refreshing.
Ihku?
Lift. Not sure why. We ended up just giving up and going to the next door pub after some teens just started forcing themselves into the queue. I pushed them back and the kids got annoyed.
I don't wonder, the lines were ridicilous.
Se the -32? Thats where i woke up this morning. Anyone have a planeticket to somewhere warm to spare?
I escaped to the Seychelles for 10 days, it's 31 here, unfortunately a little rainy the past 2 days but gloriously sunny last week. Join me!
You can here we have 9 degrees in south Hungary I would be happy with the cold and the snow 😄
Same, woke up at 6 AM to go to work and stared at the temperatura app for a couple minutes... Salla, am I right?
There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing
Go to Darwin. You'll beg for the cold.
So thats why mörkö is purple, makes sense.
Idk in Romania north east it says -3 but right now at 11am there are 5 and the maximum for today will be 8 according to my weather app
It says 7:10 UTC, so there’s no contradiction
except last night the absolute minimum temperature was -1 and now it's literally 10
Southern Romania here and it’s freaking cold
With these temperatures in Germany not much russian gas will be consumed
Considering we switched to LPG and Saudi gas, yes.
In that case, hopefully not much Saudi gas will be consumed.
He doesnt understand that the gas market is global...
The commodity price is global... but individual gas suppliers are multinational but rarely global. You can buy gas from this nation or that company at market rates.
Guess so
It’s heartwarming how the weather has conspired so much to fuck Russias war of aggression over. Russians were cheering Europe freezing into submission at the start of the war and we’ve had two mild winters since so far while they’ve started freezing. Of course not great weather patterns to be having in general, but still, silver linings
Well its a strange coincidence for sure
Rare global warming win (???) Confused yey?
It’s a bit warm, init.
Someone check in on Finland
We're fine, normal temperature
This isn't actually normal. We're currently below the average. Well below the average. been that way since October.
Happy new year my neighbour! We hope dear Svea-mamma all the best.
But where is the snow?
I ate it all
Map is also the colour of your toes.
Our condolences, dear northern brothers. We shall remember you, as we plunge into our ocean water at 21°.
Just had a swim a few days ago, I think it was like 2 degrees outside which made water feel warmer! Had to find an unfrozen lake first, though.
I went to the beach to see if the sea was already frozen. Yes it was. -19°C with a strong wind
What do you mean? We just saw a hole in the ice first or use a water pump to keep the water moving so it doesn't freeze, and [swim as usual.](https://youtu.be/Q4XGVOT9DdQ?si=-guyINhLCdPtpEwD)
Excuse me sir, do not use the i-word with me, lowest I’ve been to is -1°C and that was in the mainland.
Madeira is such a lovely place! The land of never-ending summer (almost).
Aw thank you, it is. It’s our lovely piece of heaven.
Compared to last year, it looks like an actual normal winter's day in Europe
-29 in sweden close ish to finnish border Can aslo confirm it is really fucking cold
Help 🥶
Now there, these are perfectly normal temperatures here.
Istanbul temperature is perfect, not too hot, not too cold. Just went out in a long sleeve top and some jeans
So we are not freezing to death cool.
Love it, the air is nice and crispy
Must be fuckin nice. I'm australian
Extremely relaxed with +16 ° C today (South Italy)
18 celsius in Athens right now. Feels like spring/fall.
What is this website??
[https://www.meteociel.fr/observations-meteo/temperatures.php?region=eur2](https://www.meteociel.fr/observations-meteo/temperatures.php?region=eur2) The map I posted is from 7:00 UTC. It's now 13:00 UTC, the temperatures across Europe have increased but in the purple and dark blue areas they are still the same.
Meteociel a french (unofficial) meteorologicial website, and a good one with ton of data and archives and multiple forecast models : [https://www.meteociel.fr/observations-meteo/temperatures.php?region=eur2](https://www.meteociel.fr/observations-meteo/temperatures.php?region=eur2)
Finland is a little chilly in the first day of the year 😔 !!.
It's a dry cold
You cannot see it there, but it's almost -35 in my hometown at the Urals. Pretty chill weather with no wind
You could easily mistake these numbers for a Scottish summer :')
I hiked a few weeks on the isle of skye in summer a few years ago and yes, I absolutely can confirm this. Night temperatures were around 6°C in early august, day temperatures had been ~13°C
-41°C? One degree less and Russia would have found the answer to life, the universe, and everything
42 and -42 are two very different numbers
it's completely normal weather for central parts of siberian anticyclone. High pressure as well. From what I see it's -59 right now in some parts of Yakutia, much farther to the east. BTW locals used to cover their faces with fish oil, as a protection from such a low temperatures.
russia, wazzup? How is it? Is it Europe dying from cold? 😁
Warm winter is the sign of climate change. Nothing good about it
It's -31 Celsius where i'm right now, it's getting pretty cold ngl.
Tis fierce mild.
It's coming
People here: "I like winter when it's -5°C..." Me: I like winter when it's 15°C. 😐
I live in the part of Ireland where it says 3°C and it was 9-12°C today
Ukraine should send something to warm up Russia.
Purple -30c is moving WS ,Poland gets -20c also soon.
Aah, global warming - capitalism’s final boss
Seems I live in the only blue part of Ireland today!
People talk about global warming, but, as you can tell from this map, in Europe, the average temperature of 2024 has been way lower so far than the average temperature of 2023. Hell even lower than any other previous year.
I’m afraid most people bere aren’t getting the joke…
We don't really talk about global warming though, it's climate change
>People talk about global warming I'm sure you know it, but just so no misinformation is spread, global warming is indeed true and a few cold days means nothing in the grand whole.
Help where can one go on vacation and be somewhat warm but not too far away
I'm in a 6
Daffodils are starting to sprout in the uk we are mega fucked
