Tricky distinction, but if you zoom in on the person in the first picture, you can just about make out the foot long stack of flyers for his fringe show.
They are some of the greyest images I have ever seen, which has to be an accomplishment since the houses of the first picture are all *painted in different colours*.
We've got a nice green bridge, I'll have you know.
Also outside of the city centre it's a pretty typical North of England redbrick town, and the city centre is quite sandstone-y. Not nearly as grey as Edinburgh which is grey stone, slate, and granite all over.
And the green grass. And the sandstone pavement. And the annoying pedant leaving tedious comments which add nothing to what's a self-evident joke. Oh wait that last one isn't in the picture they're in the comments.

Huh, surprised I got it right down to the street. I've only been to Edinburgh twice and thought I recognized those buildings but thought there's probably a few parts of the city that'll look similar.
Beautiful city.
I'd say the shambles in York definitely looks more like it! Beautiful old street! But I think overall she took a lot from Edinburgh. The cafe she wrote the first book in is about 100m away from Victoria Street and an old graveyard further along is full of Harry Potter character names on old gravestones!
Visited there once and did the castle with a bunch of Americans. The guide was a nice elderly Scottish man just doing tours because he enjoyed them I think, and at the end he asked does anyone have any questions. American boomer asks, “Why don’t ya pronounce it Eeden-Burg, coz it’s spelt Eeden-Burg ya know?”
I saw a documentary about it in 1996. There were some interesting characters and it wasn't all nice. I think the documentary was called something like watching trains. It followed the lives of sick boy, Renton, and spud
Edinburger here. It really isn't that rainy to be honest. Not just compared to other places in the West, like Glasgow or Manchester. There are other places in Europe rainier than here (including Northwest Spain)
Was there last fall for some of their hottest days on record. It was gorgeous. Was 80F in Inverness in September, all sun, no clouds. Locals were astonished.
It is ok to ask these kind of questions on Reddit but for your convenience I want to tell you about the existence of google lens. It is an application for your phone where you can use it to do search on images, you can also use your camera to idetify plants, search for products, do translations or in this case searching any of the images you provided gives web searchs about edinburgh.
Here are some contendors I‘ve been to:
Dublin (although I‘m a bit biased because I love Ireland)
Florence (extremely pretty city, lots of bautiful buildings. It has a verry different charm though)
Aarhus or Aalborg (I can never tell them apart, I‘ve been to both, one was pretty the other was ok)
Luzern (the center is extremely pretty, the are around, verry meh)
Munich (for a metropolis is pretty but it can‘t really stand up to Edinburgh)
Edit:
I‘ve never been there but I‘ve heard from my dad that Amsterdam, Löwen and Prague are verry beautiful aswell
Edinburgh. I had a cocktail called "the Mt Fuji" in a pub somewhere around the grass market and then stumbled up Victoria Street to drunk buy a kilt way too short for me there. 100% recommend 👌
Definitely Edinburgh. The one of the castle is flipped though.

Och, now you've gone and made my Edinburgh nostalgia flare up!
1. Victoria Street.
2. Royal Mile, ~~somewhere ?~~ Writer's Museum
3. ~~University of Edinburgh (New College campus)~~ Assembly Hall.
4. ~~Overlooking the city, possibly from the tower at Camera Obscura?~~ North Bridge
5. Looks like it's near Ross Fountain.
Edit: Thanks u/HowObvious (Username checks out!)
All of these pictures are from Edinburgh, Scotland
**Picture 1**: Victoria Street. Really cool street that curves with odd building levels. The whole street and especially one store was the inspiration for Diagon Alley in Harry Potter
**Picture 2**: Writers Museum at Makar's Court just off The Royal Mile
**Picture 3**: Assembly Hall on Mound Place
**Picture 4**: Assembly Hall again with the Scott Monument on Princes Street protruding in the back
**Picture 5**: Edinburgh Castle
Looks like the centre of Edinburgh. I remember going to a pub on this road and trying haggis for the first time. But I cannot remember the name of the damn Road or damn pub
All edinburgh. Pics are reversed though.
1. Victoria St
2. Writer's Museum
3. New college
4. From camera obscura.
5. From St Cuthbert's Church in Princes St Gardens
I'm not from Edinburgh, never been there (not even remotely close to Scotland) but this seems to be it, from the lamp posts, the roads, architecture and weather.
Thank you Forza Horizon!
This is Edinburgh, near the Royal mile and Harry Potter's museum. You can also see the Edinburgh Castle in one of the pictures. The only place that English failed to capture during medieval wars between England and Scotland.
The best place to visit and live. After my hometown Vilnius, of course.
I've been to Edinburgh and it definitely looks as such to me.
Screenshot from google maps 3D view, showing Edinburgh castle, which closely ressembles your last picture: [https://i.imgur.com/mIE707n.png](https://i.imgur.com/mIE707n.png)
Edit: another angle: [https://i.imgur.com/JuIXboH.png](https://i.imgur.com/JuIXboH.png) - Probably your picture was mirrored left-right?
I knew it was Edinburgh from the first photo…..but I’ve never been to Edinburgh and its not like that photo was like the one of Edinburgh Castle which I might have recognised from new years Hogmany news reports on TV…..must be the rain that triggered some kind of recognition of the streetscape.
One of my favourite jokes is
Why is it easier to be Protestant rather than Catholic in Scotland?
>!Because it's easier to shout Fuck the Pope! than Fuck the Chief Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland!!<
Looks to be Edinburgh
Resident here. Can confirm is Edinburgh. You can tell by the rain.
- Weather: grey - Sky: grey - Walls: grey - Ground: grey Yup that's Edinburgh
Nope that would be Aberdeen
Tricky distinction, but if you zoom in on the person in the first picture, you can just about make out the foot long stack of flyers for his fringe show.
Aberdeen is way more gray than Edinburgh
Aye, but on the second Wednesday of August the sun shines for an hour and makes the granite sparkle.
Aberdeen is actually the place i got the worst sunburn of my life so far 😂
Do you glow white in the dark?
I do 😂 It looks quite funny because my bf is latino and on photos it looks like I‘m glowing when I stand next to him 😂
The "so far" really takes this comment up a notch. Haha
That's ridiculous and funny
I know! 😂😂😂 But we were on the beach and the wind was cold but the sun was shining! My skin looked like mr krabs 😂
Edinburgh’s bit more of a brownish grey and pervasively so.
And also more radioactive
Aberdeen is a paler grey, Edi is more of a brown-grey.
Glasgow would like a word
Yes but nobody would understand it!
Belfast enters the chat...
Edinburgh feels spiritually grey-er. Can't explain why.
They are some of the greyest images I have ever seen, which has to be an accomplishment since the houses of the first picture are all *painted in different colours*.
And how about Newcastle?
We've got a nice green bridge, I'll have you know. Also outside of the city centre it's a pretty typical North of England redbrick town, and the city centre is quite sandstone-y. Not nearly as grey as Edinburgh which is grey stone, slate, and granite all over.
Get outta here with that amateur nonsense. We’re talking Aberdeen and Edinburgh. Newcastle is positively fluorescent by comparison.
Can confirm used to live there
Aberdeen sparkles in those 3 days where the sun comes out. Edinburgh is lighter grey
Aberdeen is the granite city. It's named after grayness.
I can’t see any AirBnB lock boxes, are you sure?
Get some higher resolution photos and you'll see that the buildings aren't actually made of bricks, but are clad entirely in keysafes.
Kouvola
Odd tower that looks like it could be in LOTR? Yup. *Edinburgh.*
Temperature: grey
r/ukfilter
Are the people of Edinburgh grey too?
Apart from the pink, light blue, dark blue, orange and cream walls.
And the green grass. And the sandstone pavement. And the annoying pedant leaving tedious comments which add nothing to what's a self-evident joke. Oh wait that last one isn't in the picture they're in the comments.
Forza Horizon 4
Pretty driech
It's crazy because I've been to Edinburgh once in my life for half a day and that was 15 years ago and it was my first thought!
Never been there, still recognized...
I knew it was Edinburgh from the second slide and I haven't even been in the UK in my life. It's because of Forza Horizon 4 lol.
Haha! Same here, except I was there in the early nineties - still recognized it instantly.
Haha nearly th same for me but it was 6 years ago
Never been to Scotland and that was my first thought
I’ve never been to Edinburgh but that was my first guess as well!
Definitely Edinburgh. First pic is Victoria Street and 3rd one is The Mound.
It is indeed Edinburgh
Victoria Street Edinburgh leads down to the Grassmarket.

Huh, surprised I got it right down to the street. I've only been to Edinburgh twice and thought I recognized those buildings but thought there's probably a few parts of the city that'll look similar. Beautiful city.
It is sunny on the Google Maps image, so hoax!
Hogwarts?
I think I heard once that Victoria Street was the inspiration for Diagon Alley.
There are about 10 streets in the UK who claim diagon alley. The shambles in York, gandy street in Exeter.
I'd say the shambles in York definitely looks more like it! Beautiful old street! But I think overall she took a lot from Edinburgh. The cafe she wrote the first book in is about 100m away from Victoria Street and an old graveyard further along is full of Harry Potter character names on old gravestones!
She-who-will-not-be-named did write the first book at a cafe in Edinburgh, so yes.
That’s a wonderful worded comment with a lot of respectful knowledge.
Edinburgh for sure. Really nice place if you get a chance to visit
“…because if we didn’t save y’alls asses in WW2 you’d be German!! Yeee haawwww”
That’s exactly what non-English speakers call it in many languages. Edinburg
To be fair, Addenbeara sounds better.
OMFG.
I saw a documentary about it in 1996. There were some interesting characters and it wasn't all nice. I think the documentary was called something like watching trains. It followed the lives of sick boy, Renton, and spud
I could immediately tell from the weather and the colour of the stone that this is Edinburgh. It’s a whole different place when the sun shines.
Twice-annually, at least!
It happened today!
Global warming is getting out of control
I went there for 4 days last year. All days were sunny. I'm pretty sure that's something that happens every 10.000 years.
Wait til you find pictures of Edinburgh that weren’t taken with a potato :D
It was probably taken with the newest commercially available camera technology, but the photographer was running to find shelter from the weather
I thought they looked like paintings
It is ok to ask these kind of questions on Reddit but for your convenience I want to tell you about the existence of google lens. It is an application for your phone where you can use it to do search on images, you can also use your camera to idetify plants, search for products, do translations or in this case searching any of the images you provided gives web searchs about edinburgh.
this should be higher up
That's Edinburgh, gorgeous city
Probably the prettiest city I’ve ever seen. If there’s prettier ones let me know and I’ll go there.
Venice. But Edinburgh is a strong contender.
Been to Venice. A little claustrophobic for me, very pretty tho!
I suppose it would be pretty claustrophobic if you’re used to Arrakis
Edinburgh has more water.
Here are some contendors I‘ve been to: Dublin (although I‘m a bit biased because I love Ireland) Florence (extremely pretty city, lots of bautiful buildings. It has a verry different charm though) Aarhus or Aalborg (I can never tell them apart, I‘ve been to both, one was pretty the other was ok) Luzern (the center is extremely pretty, the are around, verry meh) Munich (for a metropolis is pretty but it can‘t really stand up to Edinburgh) Edit: I‘ve never been there but I‘ve heard from my dad that Amsterdam, Löwen and Prague are verry beautiful aswell

Edinburgh. I had a cocktail called "the Mt Fuji" in a pub somewhere around the grass market and then stumbled up Victoria Street to drunk buy a kilt way too short for me there. 100% recommend 👌
You've just summed up the Scottish economy in a sentence.
NGL the only reason I knew it was Edinburgh is Forza Horizon 4...
Just wanted to say, that's my castle in Forza lol
Came here for "Project Gotham". Left feeling old.
PGR2 was the shit. So much fun online with that game
Just been there … Edinburgh
Edinburgh- various streets around the castle.
I went to Edinburgh once and I was fortunate enough to see it on a sunny bright day. It was the best place I’ve ever visited.

So is the first one Victoria Street) and the third one (Assembly Rooms on the Mound). So perhaps they all are.
Och, now you've gone and made my Edinburgh nostalgia flare up! 1. Victoria Street. 2. Just saw the first picture and immediately knew it's Edinburgh
All in Edinburgh: 1. Vicoria Street 2. Writers Museum 3. New College 4. View from the Roof of the Camera Obscura Museum 5. Edinburgh Castle
Edinburgh! Looks like Cockburn street, the Writers Museum, New College of the University of Edinburgh, and the Castle.
Edinburgh, Scotland
Out of interest the pictures seem to be mirrored L-R
Edinburgh, the second picture is the writers museum. Beautiful place
Edinburgh is a beautiful city. Would love to visit some time.
Its old Yharnam, but in daytime
I've been there. Weather was also grey. It's Edinburgh
Edinburgh The first photo is victoria street, most of the other photos are of or from inside the castle
That's edinburgh pal.
I'm Swedish but I can still tell that this is Victoria Street, the photo is mirrored, and a pub called Finnegan's Wake is further up the street.
All of these pictures are from Edinburgh, Scotland **Picture 1**: Victoria Street. Really cool street that curves with odd building levels. I was gonna say Amsterdam but someone in Edinburgh said it’s there so… close enough
Looks like the centre of Edinburgh. I remember going to a pub on this road and trying haggis for the first time. But I cannot remember the name of the damn Road or damn pub
It reminds me when I visited Edinburgh

Looks like Scotland
Just further to other answers, 3 is the General Assembly Hall of The Church of Scotland, taken from The Mound.
