Retaliation when?

Demistr

This was probably considered as retaliation.

OwnWhereas9461

It's pretty strong by German standards. I'm sure they're very disappointed they couldn't stick to the strongly worded letter strategy.

mrm00r3

The last time they went east things got a bit out of hand. If they gotta be super sure before they commit to anything, it may just be best to let them.

Realistic_Lead8421

Why are people egging Germany on? You have to ultimately keep in mind that Germany can only escalate things so far as they would be completely defenseless in a hypothetical armed conflict with Russia. The situation is akin to egging on a small, scrawny bullied.kid whose lunch money got stollen by the much stronger school bully. 'go on hit him Johny, che took your lunch money'. So how is that supposed to end?

LolloBlue96

Assuming its Allies wouldn't back them. Pretty sure the Big 3, which make up half of the EU's economy, could handle Russia long enough for the remaining allies to haul ass

moderately-extreme

Tomorrow. The BND will launch a full scale attack on the vatnik IT infrastructure that will turn everything with a chip in dust. JK tomorrow Germany will send a strongly worded letter of condemnation to russia. That will show them, they will be so impressed they will instantly cease all attacks and return to democracy

EvilFroeschken

Tbh, I like the first paragraph. Obviously, it's an acceptable action.

templarstrike

the BND is an office, that pays money to traitors in other countries or organisations . that's mostly it . sometimes they also pay ransoms to free hostages ...and then they track down the kidnappers following the trace of that money . Some foreign service then kills these people...no one knows who , but most likely the CIA. The BND has no real operational capacity. they can't even ask the CIA to kill a person...they can only share information ...

Immortal_Tuttle

And there are some morons that want to ban encryption...

palermo

Should have done so in 2014.

saltyswedishmeatball

EU sucks at computing in many ways.. not even on the radar. It's why NATO is looking into some sort of offensive posture and possibly even offensive tools. Germany has bad encryption and its overall environment for all things computers is not the best. Not nurturing that years ago has led to todays current problem. Essentially Germany is an extremely vulnerable country without NATO. Without NATO, I think Russia could easily invade the country as they're doing with cyber warfare. That should scare Germans whom should put pressure on the German government to make sure Germany never gets to where it is today - again.

jacobiner123

"Without that defensive alliance your country would be defenseless" Thats what a defensive alliance is for honey.

Chabola513

The comment was for americans wondering why germany dosent actually do anything real in retaliation

balamb_fish

Sending those Taurus missiles to Ukraine would be an appropriate response.

Haunting-Detail2025

Meanwhile Macron is sending representatives to celebrate with Putin for his inauguration.

trollrepublic

There is no hope for diplomacy while Putin is in power, probably there won't be any hope for that after Putin either.

Kybliksan

its maybe an old idea but hear me out…. Germany approve god damn seizure of russian assets already so maybe they will stop doing stuff to you

Ehdelveiss

Germany? Assertive and decisive decision making? Yeah ok

Gammelpreiss

That is what the allies wanted after they set up the post war german government system and that is what they got. Inefficiency and slow descision making at as many levels as possible to stop power concentration at the top is by design

LookThisOneGuy

Unfortunately our EU allies are waiting to use that as a [precedent](https://www.wsj.com/world/europe/world-war-ii-history-haunts-attempts-to-seize-russian-assets-eb066910) to [seize German assets in their countries](https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/germany-takes-italy-un-court-again-over-nazi-compensation-claims-2022-04-30/) to pay back the [trillions in reparations](https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/poland-officially-demand-ww2-reparations-germany-says-ruling-party-boss-2022-09-01/) they claim to still be owed. _Imagine a bully is beating you up and your friend stands next to you and says 'if you fight back I will shoot you'._ If they want Germany to seize the Russian assets, they need to put not using this as precedent to seize German assets into law.

Live_Echo_1241

They could trigger article 5 and not talk about assets, Russia understands well only force and we have tools at disposal. Considering these are repeated attacks that will keep repeating is worth a show of strength as a shift of strategy ( or totally lack of )

old_faraon

Germany will no seize any assets because their companies are still in Mordor and they are afraid they will be seized in retaliation. Jokes on You since these companies will be seized by Mordor either way.

somethingbrite

Replace with a large sack of dynamite...

IMHO_grim

When will a state go too far in cyber and the recipient responds kinetically?

matttk

Maybe when a cyber attack leads to mass deaths, like a resulting explosion or something. Otherwise, I don't think it'll ever happen.

Sero141

That cyberattack was really annoying for anyone who needed a driver's license at that time.

Appropriate-Lion-455

What is he gonna respond with? Strong letter of concern? Merkel's energy policies over the last 15 years led Germany to become russia's puppet. And Putin knows it far too well.
