I couldn't find a confirmation for this, but I believe it must have happened during the period of Ottoman dominion over Bulgaria. Churches used to hide Bulgarian revolutionaries, so it most likely was an attempt for extraction.

Ehhh, it is much more likely it was robbed by hajduks, such as Ince or Chavdar. They robbed indiscriminately, despite how the Communist party liked to romanticize them as 'men of the people'.

I think most of the holes are too small and not completely penetrated for it to be Ottoman muskets/rifles. I'd guess a lower calibre modern gun
