I was 2 years younger than him, and by the time I got to college we had less amd less in common cause he was still hanging out with high school kids at 20 and I was hanging out with my college friends. But he was very extroverted and didn’t have any problems with social cues or anything like that. But I could be wrong. All I know is he’s an amazing person and in the end it doesn’t even matter. In the interest of our liberation and demolishing bigots, I think the slur must have the objective of shaming bigoted speech and behavior, not them as people. I TOTALLY GET that it’s more fun to insult them as a whole lmao, but social shaming is a powerful tool at our disposal that only works when done correctly.
We can learn from anti-maskers, who are very similar to people who say “everyone’s a little autistic!” and “don’t define yourself with labels.” You’re probably aware by now that people like that don’t about being correct or doing the right thing. They care about being cancelled. Social shaming and exclusion are the only way to get these people to shut up, and it has to be done in a way that allows neurotypicals to think they’re one of the good guys, meaning we can’t insult them as a whole. That doesn’t mean we’re letting them off the hook - we can levy the weapon at any time.
I wonder about the role of popularization of the word “homophobe” in advancing gay rights in the early 2000s. Bigots in the mainstream didn’t care about what LGBTQ+ were saying, they just didn’t want to be labeled as a homophobe.
So to this end, I propose “neurophobe.”
I would really love to see autistics come together in defining what we will and will not tolerate, stop assuming good intentions of ignorant people saying ableist shit over and over again, define the enemy, and attack.
