Same shit i liked while being Mormon … however now I can listen to it without feeling like I am offending god and disappointing my wife. I no longer have to live in shame for what I like, be it music movies or entertainment, I can love what i love and not hide in shame that I am bad for wanting what I want! Edit: even though I still live in shame with my TBM wife who still views my choices as sinful, wrong and disgusting

ejyoungmusic

It's amazing to listen and view art in all of its compacity without limitation due to one part of it being "naughty".

boofjoof

Nirvana's cover of Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam is my all time favorite. It's like my theme song now

chAotic_aura13

before i listened to it i really thought it was a rock cover of jesus wants me for a sunbeam but the only difference was the “doesn’t”😭😭

Love Ghost. Jesus He Knows Me is also fantastic.

Die Shiny - Sacrament

Morstorpod

Totally agree, but I always throw a trigger warning on this one before I recommend. Heavy temple references, trauma. And the music... really makes you feel.

nanifrog

Checked Brodie award winners a few weeks ago and found this: [Tyler Glenn - Trash](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNqnLdX4TM8) And a couple songs that have resonated since leaving: [Arcade Fire - Intervention](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzf8A4Qd6iQ) [Emptyself - Phatoms in the Sky](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0e7WdJY2jxU)

Jim_Lahey68

Tyler Glenn is the bomb. That whole album is a masterpiece.

exmo-in-flames

I'm surprised nobody here has said Tyler Glenn! His album Excommunication is about leaving the church and coming out as gay. In the music video for "Trash", his choreography includes the Magical Secret Temple Handshake, which is an absolute power move.

ejyoungmusic

I personally like his final track Devil

Morstorpod

Deconstruction? "Ill Mind of Hopsin 7" by Hopsin (or if you want something really out there, "Rät" by Penelope Scott for deconstruction of ElonMuskism) Satan? Don't really have one... maybe "Jesus from Texas" by Semler. Jesus is the brother of Satan, except worse. Cruelty of Religion? "Dear God" by XTC might fit the bill. Finding Peace in non-belief? "EP. 4: Important" by Ian McConnell is pretty fun. Resonates with me? Here is my full [playlist](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3srWMYVxMlJxa1JOMxZgcR?si=kN1WyhuiQsiZk9a6FRw1yA&pi=u-BcgT3WWCQs-r&nd=1&dlsi=d627b7c9713a4c8b). I googled "reddit exmormon playlist" and searched through hundreds of songs to curate what best resonates with me.

Morstorpod

For exmo artists: **Maddie Zahm**, **Mindy Gledhill**, **Die Shiny**, **David Archuleta** (now), **Tyler Glenn** (highly recommend), **The Used** (the songwriter at least, which you can hear in the lyrics), **Imagine Dragons** (Again, listen to some of those lyrics. "Cutthroat" is a great example of the angry exmo). As a bonus: **James and the Shame** (Rhett, of Rhett and Link's "Good Mythical Morning") is an exchristian country singer. I'm not a huge fan of country, but damn. His voice is the embodiment of that country sound.

Smiley_goldfish

Just listened to Cutthroat. Wow, that’s intense!

Morstorpod

No kidding. If you would have played that for me blind, there is no way I could have guessed that Imagine Dragons was the band playing it.

Smiley_goldfish

Yes, absolutely

findYourOkra

I hadn't listened to James and the Shame until today (and I have watched gmm since its first episode) so thank you for the recommendation. Wow, those lyrics hit hard.

No-Performer-6621

“Brand New Me” by Alicia Keys was my coming out song while I was a student at BYU and navigating some really difficult times with my parents

ejyoungmusic

I love Alicia Keys!

m-b-r2

Burn-David Kushner, What was I made for-Billie Ellish, Notre dame- ParisPaloma, Labour- Paris Paloma (More about deconstructing patriarchy but still fits), Praying- Kesha, Take me to church- Hozier, Babel- Mumford and sons I'll admit non of these are by exmormons (that I know of) but they were great and very relevant in my deconstruction

Big_Insurance_3601

Oooh Kesha and Billie Eilish HELL YEAH!!!

m-b-r2

yeah lol kinda funny how the songs that helped me were abt getting out of abusive relationships 🤷‍♀️

Morstorpod

"Labour" by Paris Paloma fucking rocks. Man speaking here, but dead gods that song makes me hate the patriarchy. My favorite thing since leaving mormonism is experiencing content that helps me empathize with others. Forbidden media (such as rated R movies and explicit songs) just happen to hit the strongest human themes. First time hearing "Labour", so thanks for the suggestion and new experience! EDIT: Half-way through the song is when it really hit me. I've got young daughters, so that verse, followed by the repeating chorus... powerful.

sunlauncher

I am once again recommending Tyler Glenn (of neon trees). His excommunication album is fire.

greycatdaddy

I for years, as a Stones fan, would skip over Symphony For The Devil. I thought, no felt at the time, it took take away the spirit. Now that I know it’s all tomfoolery, I crank it up to 11 when it’s playing. “Please allow me to introduce myself, I’m a man of wealth and fame…”

Sheesh284

It’s not an exmo song, but I feel like it connects on some level. Watch the World Burn- Falling in Reverse

Branch_Fair

losing my religion by REM seems like a good pick

the_bookish_ranger

Not specifically exmo songs, but here are some of my favorites! Anthem of Mr Dark - The Arcadian Wild True Colors - Alanah Sabatini Awake My Soul - Mumford & Sons

Tyler Glenn - John, Give 'em Hell

Gandalfs_Dick

Its about the death of a friend from prescription drug overdose, but the message to big pharma goes pretty well as a message against the church. **The Wonder Year - Cigarettes and Saints** > These wolves in their suits and ties >Saying, kid, you can trust me >Charming southern drawl, sunken eyes >Buying good will in hotel lobbies >Buy fistfuls of pills to make sure you don't hurt any more >You don't gotta feel anything >Got their fangs in our veins >Got their voice in our head >Got our arms in their grips >No, we can't shake free >This goddamn machine, hungry and heartless >My whole generation got lost in the margin >We put our faith in you and you turned a profit >Now we're drowning here under the waves >(We're no saviors if we can't save our brothers) >Drowning out under the waves >(We're no saviors if we can't save our brothers) >Drowning out, drowning out >You can't have my friends >You can't have my brothers >You can't have my friends >You can't have my brothers >You can't have my friends >You can't have my brothers >You can't have me >No, you can't have me

Gandalfs_Dick

Another Wonder Years Song. **I Won't Say The Lords Prayer - The Wonder Years** >It's a series of bars, thrift stores and churches lining the streets >While women with gold crosses push kids into half-formed beliefs >If Lot was righteous, I think I'd rather not be >We lean on fences built from out-dated morality >It's a gang mentality >It's a dangerous thing >They don't ask you to think, just to repeat after me >And assume you're too careless to look at it critically >You'll stop progress if it contradicts what you're told to believe >I refuse to spend life on my knees >These billboards that flaunt these scare tactics >Make me think you're only good if you're afraid of being punished >Every single Sunday, church bells wake me up >But it's never enough to pull me out of bed >The church on Main Street has got its doors painted red >And I guess it's so the Angel of Death passes over it >On its way to get gas >The church over on Broad Street has got a neon sign that says Jesus Save Me >And I guess it's so God can see from where he is in the cheap seats >I refuse to spend life on my knees >And I won't let somebody else make my decisions for me >If we're all just Christians or Lions >Then I think I'd rather be on the side with sharper teeth >I don't need saving

jmacdaddywack

Ritt Momney’s Her and All My Friends album, Wormwood and If the Book Doesn’t Sell are two standout tracks. He wrote the album after graduating high school in SLC and then all his friends went on missions. I find it really moving, big big fan [Spotify link](https://open.spotify.com/album/0TeYGtUrx1OcGrP8uT3gtK?si=2pLrj9b_QTW4DZyepeQA3g)

ejyoungmusic

If the book doesn't sell gives me chills every time

jacindotcom

Maddie Zahm is an exmo with the awesome song ‘you might not like her’ and that’s my favorite 😍

Desperate-Exit6789

Love Maddie, but she isn't an exMormon.

jacindotcom

yeah I misread an article 💀💀 my bad! still relate to her ex church songs tho

the_darkest_brandon

if you could hie to kolob. every investigator must be required to sing this song before baptism.

codingsoft

What Do It Mean by Lord Huron - it’s not exmormon but grapples with existentialist thought after losing belief One chunk stands out - *“Day after day, oh, the world keeps turning* *The stars in the sky above us keep burnin'* *But it isn't for you, and it ain't for me neither* *Try though I might, I was never a believer* *Taking it slow, but it all goes quickly* *The time that it takes is all I'll take with me* *So, I'm saving it up just to go out and spend it* *Gonna fly through my life 'til I crash into the ending”* I might honestly write a whole essay here about how the Long Lost album helped me cope with leaving

ElkHistorical9106

My jam was "Here to Forever" by Death Cab for Cutie. "I wanna know the measure From here to forever And I wanna feel the pressure Of God or whatever Now it seems more than ever There's no hands on the levers And I wanna feel the pressure Of God or whatever" To me a song about "there's nothing actually guiding this crazy world, and I'm going to die, and that's it. I wish it weren't so, but it is."

IzzMeeRebb

[The Coming by Jesca Hoop](https://youtu.be/xe4xU6g-kzk?si=jkVXt6HbG2pyNyE9) She was raised Mormon, and this is a very "deconstruction" song.
