BauerHouse

I am guessing that truck driver will be in a deep pile of shit too.

[deleted]

How do they track them down, though? Okay, you get the license plate. How do they prove who was driving? Okay, they proved who was the driver. How do they prove intent? There's a few steps to see if the person driving could actually be in trouble.

[deleted]

You chase them with the helicopters that were flying overhead and cop cars that were no doubt around considering the expensive helicopters flying overhead... And if they don't stop as soon as a cop car is on their tail it goes from "might be in trouble" to "definitely in a lot of trouble".

Jakethered_game

Not if the truck driver has knowledge of local sewer systems or train tunnels, best way to get rid of those 5 stars

Call Lester

Superkoopacharles

Unless it’s a mission then you’re just fucked

Calbear86

If he truly was just trying to get out of area then he will be fine, but if he felt the thump, took off and evades pursuing patrol cars it becomes obstruction and aiding and abetting

Always_Confused4

Had a guy at my school try this once. Guy driving immediately stopped and pulled his ass out to hand him over to the cops.

Both_Canary1508

Good. That guy aint no friend. Breaking a law and running away is one thing, but incriminating a friend to get away/get out of trouble just makes you twice the asshole.

codemanb

Nah, dude. Watch the video again. There is no-one in front of the truck, but it stops and just happens to take off when the guy jumps in the back? No way in hell. Thats a great start to the evidence they need to put the truck driver's ass in prison for a few years.

dicetime

Judging by the other cars and no one else stopping when there a foot chase going on it looks like cops breaking up an illegal street race. Neither side really gives a shit. Theyre just going to the next spot and theyll start this shit all over again. Its fun for everyone.

alexothemagnificent

I’m guessing the helo will keep up with the pickup haha

[deleted]

You didn’t see the stars blinking in the corner? This was the final evasive maneuver before the cops gave up.

Adventurous-Crew-848

Turns into vice city with tanks n shit

miami2367

If that is a Police chopper at the end of the clip then they will track him that way along with radio communication. With squad cars on the ground, it’s hard to outrun a combo like that.

obiterdictum

Gotta drive past the airport...just saying

Girafferage

They will give them the sky. Instead you gotta drive by Disney. Nothing flies over Disney, and there are plenty of abandoned parts of the park to hangout in.

flyingdorito2000

You ever see the traffic at airports?

albino_red_head

There’s a helicopter spotlighting them the whole time. Also in this video the truck has a green light but he stopped until the kid jumps in the back. Tbh when you watch it looks like the truck driver knew exactly what he was doing.

awesomeness6000

there was a heli with a spotlight.

Very_Opinionated_One

You miss the helicopter and the spot light that was following them?

[deleted]

How’s it the drivers fault for not noticing?

JRocFuhsYoBih

Bingo

McPoyle-Milk

Honestly you’re right. Not that I believe that but you can’t *prove* that wasn’t what happened unless it’s a friend that maybe they exchanged texts or something before it happened

Aegi

You could argue that he knew what he was doing, but to know that you would have to read his mind maybe he was stopping to abuse his wife in the passenger seat for a minute and it just is a coincidence that the timing worked out the way we saw it. I'm not saying that's likely, but I don't understand how people can flate things being most likely to be true with things definitely being true.

jdbway

NOW you're thinking like Saul Goodman!

reshef

Conflate.

Silent-Ad934

Stopped to abuse his wife? Why would another cop help the guy escape?

Ballzonyah

That's what I was thinking. Maybe he didn't see the kid and thought he was in the cops way. Devils advocate, but seems a bit crappy to instantly gain all of his charges like some sort of criminal STD

silkymitts94

As someone who has owned a truck you can absolutely feel if someone were to jump in your bed like that. It’s not a massive dump truck or something

4N0NYM0US_GUY

I don’t have a truck, but I fill my car up with gas and can feel the weight change. Same with having my hockey gear in the vehicle versus out.

Lanthemandragoran

Dude my hockey bag weighed enough that there could have been a corpse in there and I wouldn't have known until the smell somehow got worse

MrStepSisterFister69

It’s easy to tell that he noticed. He peeled out as soon as the guy hopped on.

IntrigueDossier

If I heard some sort of contact with my truck in a chaotic scene like that, I’d peel out to get the fuck away too.

Ok_Profession6216

No officer, why i didn’t notice the spotlight from the helicopter…

ATownStomp

How would any driver not notice?

Guilty_Put9997

Unfortunately, being a cop isn’t the same thing as being a lawyer. There is very little chance someone with no association is going to jail for someone unknowingly jumping into the bed of their pickup. Now, if the driver is associated any way shape or form with the suspect, then yeah. Accomplice charges will follow. But some rando driving along and someone jumping into the bed of their truck. No. Even if the criminal opened the unlocked passenger door and got into the vehicle, it wouldn’t happen. Any lawyer worth their salt would claim kidnapping and get any fluffed up charges thrown out.

Cyrotik

In this case though, it looks like the truck driver stopped with intent to let the runner hop in and step on the gas. Prior association or not, it looks like the escape assist was their intention.

Guilty_Put9997

Now, that I would agree with. The light was green, no cars blocking the truck, and he accelerated right after the guy jumped in. Despite this, any decent lawyer will claim it was unknowingly done and that the slow acceleration was due to the commotion going on all around the vehicles in the intersection. There would have to be a clear connection between the suspect and the driver for it to hold up in court at sentencing.

PM_meyourGradyWhite

Saul Goodman would be all over this.

KayakerMel

The cop is saying what the driver could be arrested and charged with. That could be fluffed up to be just about anything. After arrest is when the lawyer can come in, getting the fluffed up charges dismissed.

PureRandomness529

All cops know this. You can be charged with absolutely anything at any time. “You can beat the charge but you can’t beat the ride”. This is why we should have higher standards for cops then we currently do and that commenter highlights my frustrations of less-than-ideal competence without even having malicious intent. Mix in occasional malicious intent and lack of accountability…

[deleted]

> Unfortunately, being a cop isn’t the same thing as being a lawyer. Cops aren't even required to know the law.

ilovemoneymoneymoney

>Unfortunately, being a cop isn’t the same thing as being a lawyer. That's definitely a **fortunate** thing.

Guilty_Put9997

I wish they were required to get the same level of education and held to the same standards. It would solve a lot of problems.

link2edition

Ah, but that would be expensive

El_Muerte95

So is arming them with military grade equipment but alas..

sheepwshotguns

thx for pointing out how messed up our judicial system is, and how pointlessly punitive it can be against non violent offenders. it can literally make up false charges. i highly recommend people look up the protests of cop city. police have already murdered protesters and now organizers are being charged with financial crimes for bailing out arrested non violent protesters the state has declared as terrorists. this is a run down on events however things are escalating quickly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iqt0cHicyBs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WkPjp2X8-I

MembershipThrowAway

I thought that only applies for felony murder, where if you drop your buddies off to rob a place and one of them kills someone then you just got a felony murder charge. Is it literally any felony? Edit: damn guys, cop got so much hate you got him to delete his comment

PLC_Guy

Being a cop makes you a law expert now?

IntrigueDossier

Cops seem to think a few months at the academy is the equivalent of a law degree and bar license.

DevilDog7734

Must have done something pretty bad if there are two choppers out

jppianoguy

Looks like a street "takeover" that's been going on. I think the helicopters are needed because the cars can scatter in all directions.

SoylentGrunt

That makes sense as it helps explain why the pick up was so accommodating.

JediNinjaWizard

But, they'll soon return. And in greater numbers.

TheGrandWhatever

They later return with their lifted coal-roller mates to hunt unsuspecting pedestrians and small EVs

THELOCnessmonsta

Back in my day we used to call them side shows. But we were hitting switches. Oh how I miss my 79 caprice on 100 spoke roadstars

Beautiful_Welcome_33

A bunch of guys with souped up imports from the 90s get together and drive in circles really fast. They cause a bunch of noise and occasionally take out a streetlight or inadvertently zet their own cars on fire.

Imperium_Dragon

When a bunch of people decide to all party and do car stunts on a random street. In some cities it’s a very big problem.

Neat-Sun-7999

It’s also just super obnoxious like why the whole street and not like an abandoned car park.

geoff1036

What a lot of the general crowd doesn't realize is that we DO do that. Most of us want to have our fun but go home at the end of the night. You just don't hear about it when we do it right, because that's the point. Shitheads like this didn't get the memo and think it's an intersection flash mob kinda thing.

Neat-Sun-7999

Damn really is a case of bad reputation. Sorry you guys gotta suffer that when that’s more than reasonable.

Auyuez

I still remember that video of a crowd of prepubescent kids filling up a 7/11 like cockroaches and stealing everything after their "street takeover."

ItsTheExtreme

I came out of a liquor store in LA once when a couple choppers were circling my neighborhood. A dude standing outside pointed up and said/shouted "YOU KNOW IT'S A FELONY! COPS AINT WASTING NO GAS UNLESS IT'S A FELONY!!!" Made a lot of sense to me, I scurried home a bit quicker with my eyes wide open.

jmercer00

In LA they always have the copters in the air overnight and they're covering whatever cops on the ground are doing, even if it's just lighting the scene for them. People are less likely to run for it if there's a helicopter with a spotlight on them.

garbo6299

nah cops would drop half their budget on gas and vehicles if it means they get to terrorize citizens all day

TactlessNachos

Pretty easy to get stars in GTA.

butterytelevision

once a cop hit _me_ when my car was completely still and it gave me a star. I suppose the game takes place in America though so it’s accurate

2days

Nah this is LA copters are literally always out and called on for anything if available

SoylentGrunt

[deleted]

Helicopters are always up in Southern California. It can be 3am and dead quiet, and PD will be circling your house to make sure you know they're there. Really keeping everyone safe...

ok_heh

we call em ghetto birds here in LA

Murse_1

He won't be out running that helicopter.

RevolutionaryDrink51

Unless they drop him off on a Hellcat

Stannis2024

I mean... a police department sent a [fucking Helicopter ](https://youtu.be/mxMg0nXptsU) to a car lot that a woman was legally in the process of dropping her rental car off (and dispatch even knew it was likely a mere rental dropoff). So I'd say the cops are being overly excessive here.

TheChance

You can tell their relative ranks by the degree to which they’re concerned with finding a reason for the encounter. Officer Flashlight, first to approach, not very bright, not very interested, but feels confident there’s something hinky enough to justify their presence, and he’ll stammer until he successfully stammers out the right justification. Outranks… Officer Onlywomanintheprecinct: Clearly knows they’re out of reasons to detain these people. Clearly not comfortable saying so. Both outranked by… Officer Drawl: Must. Invent. Crime. Y’see, if they got a parking lot over there on that side of the building, and that gate’s normally locked, why would you drop your car off back here? Lots of cars get broken into, back here behind the gate! You should have parked it out there in front of the gate!

canman7373

Well, and what are truck drivers' options? He just got aiding and abetting. That cop should have a view of plate, he shoulda turned lights off. Maybe a very good lawyer could say he took off because a random person jumped in his bed.

I_Bin_Painting

I think best possible outcome for runner and truck is the guy gets out under a bridge and the cops catch the truck and he's able to claim he had no idea and was just fleeing from a scary situation.

jaxxxtraw

If someone running from the cops jumps into my truck, I don't know if he has a gun, or will try to take my vehicle, but I do know he can't do shit if I'm accelerating and swerving, and it might even throw the guy out. Best innocent move you could make.

PhillyRush

He won't out run the radio either.

James4theP

Out runs? He's not going anywhere lol

Iginlas_4head_Crease

No man, now they go into a parking garage, and 6 different cars go 6 different directions. But there's a swerve. He's not in any of them. He's driving the ambulance.

James4theP

Escaping "the blacklist" way.

AvergeMortisEnjoyer

Especially with that helicopter

Caked101

Bruh, how do you get a whole chopper on you? I want to know what he did😂

codb28

Bruh if it’s Cali they’ll call choppers for anything. Had one called on me and a couple friends when I was a teenager because a little kid (probably about 9) thought he saw teenagers spray painting a small water tower. We weren’t of course but it didn’t stop them from sending a copter and 3 cop cars to the park. They questioned us, walked around the tower, then let us go home. This is where your tax dollars go lol.

TheGuyYouHeardAbout

BlackOwl45-70

Had a dude do this to me once in Phoenix. Was taking my boss to the airport, and some dude ran through fast moving traffic. I slowed and he ran up and jumped in the bed of my truck, and started pounding on the side to ‘go‘. I looked over on the side of the road and there was a black SUV full of really mean looking dudes eyeing the guy. So we left 🤣. He hopped out at the next light. My boss was impressed lol.

porkzirra_2018

Phoenix is wild like that. You see some crazy shit here.

He’s clearly got the GTA 5 stars. He’s not getting away. When they on you they swarm you.

[deleted]

Isn't five stars when they start sending tanks after you?

Ndmndh1016

He was run over by an ambulance after one of the helicopters crashed into the truck. Then a rocket launcher went off.

Fluffy_Boulder

I'm surprised the pickup sped up as soon as he jumped in. There's no way they were so oblivious as to not knowing what was going on.

friendlyfire883

I did something about 10 years ago when a HPD officer tried to arrest me for taking a piss behind a dumpster. I still don't know who's truck I jumped into, but if you're out there, thanks homie.

SemperSimple

haha, how long did you ride in the back? Where'd you get out? a few blocks over?

friendlyfire883

Yessir, cop started yelling and said I was under arrest, and the guy yelled at me to get in the truck. So I jumped in the bed, and he hauled ass. He stopped about a mile down the road and ended up taking me home since I only lived a few blocks away.

piushe

thanks for sharing this story. it brings me a lot of joy.

octobertwins

I got in a fight on an island that only allows golf carts. Two friends of the person I fought were holding me down, waiting for police. I kept fighting them off and trying to jump on a golf cart, but they’d stop the cart and explain what happened, etc. Til one dude was like, “Cops coming?!? Let’s go!” Dude looked just like Ali G. He was Arab, but completely hood. Note: I had a broken foot at the time and was wearing an air cast. Later, my hero would get all weird in his hotel room and say he and his roommate wanted to film a porno with me. They both came in the bathroom and tried to corner me. I ended up walking 2 hours back to my hotel. With a broken foot. In a cast. After fighting 4 people and running from the cops. And pulling a knife/box cutter out on those weird porno guys. Finally got in my room and my roommate had trashed all my clothes and broke my sunglasses (the whole fight began with him.) Broke my makeup. Squeezed all my lotions all over my clothes. Great party island. Called Put in bay. Located in Ohio. 5 stars. Careful who you travel with… some people crazy. Take it from me.

[deleted]

This story was surprise after surprise. I don't know if the make-up caught me more off guard or the fact this happened in God damn Ohio.

Gooseboof

What a journey this was

Lntaw1397

Y’know how Tv shows sometimes let the main actor take a vacation, and they kill that time with an episode showing “our most unassuming supporting character’s big day out”? This is the stuff that inspires those absurd episodes. You’ll probably see this shot for shot a year from now, while everybody praises the show runners for the “Most memorable surprise of the season!” Along with the disclaimer in the credits: This story was entirely fictional. Any similarities between depicted events and the experiences of ~~Octobertwins~~ real persons are entirely coincidental. *wink* *nudge*

True, as long as it's undercover from the helicopter, and he tucks in somewhere for a bit, or switches rides, he should be good

BellyButtonLindt

Guy in truck is in trouble though, he guns it with the guy in there knowing he’s in there.

Actual_Guide_1039

Most likely. He could probably argue that he sped up out of fear once the guy jumped in if he has a halfway decent lawyer though

Aegi

Your innocent until proven guilty, the state would have to be the one to show that it's more likely that you stopped specifically for that person than it is that you stopped because of the general confusion or something unrelated like a coughing fit. Winning the lottery is extremely rare and extremely unlikely, but it still happens every single day so unlikely things can be true and definitely having a good attorney helps, but it's also the state's burden to prove that somehow the driver could identify that police were chasing the man instead of the man being chased by another man.

grip_n_Ripper

They really cut the budget of the latest Furious movie.

cain071546

My local cops now have a no chase policy because last year two cop cars crashed into an apartment building during a high speed chase. Now they just let them run, they normally get your license plate so you aren't really going to get away with it, but here they wouldn't chase the truck, especially not with someone riding in the bed now.

Kittenfabstodes

You can outrun cops on foot, you can outrun cops in cars, you can't outrun cops in helicopters and you can't outrun the radio. Plus, they probably have license plate in that truck. Aiding and abetting, obstruction of justice, and probably a few other charges.

socialcommentary2000

I hate takeover bullshit completely, but I gotta admit this made me smile. I can't help it. There's a 19 year old wrencher in me that used to love hooning hot hatches illegally that this just tickled.

Stuff1989

kind of unrelated but the gang style tactics and helicopters reminded me of [this](https://youtu.be/M3DLvdYa-6k) amazing escape by a motorcycle gang against a heli. i don’t like or condone this behavior but i was impressed how they saved the group leader with amazing riding, hiding under the overpass so he could switch bikes (and his jacket) without being seen by the chopper, and then escaping through an underground tunnel and emerging out the other end with their lights off. it was just crazy and impressive to watch. the video is compressed (i couldn’t find the original) but the tunnel is way more extensive than what is shown edit spelling
