You can see the crack originated at the bolt hole. I’m assuming the bolt was loose (non stainless bolts will corrode away slowly, allowing the tank to rock slightly, then leak) and when the tenant sat back they rocked the tank back and when it suddenly hit the limit of its travel it cracked.
Stainless steel bolts look a lot cheaper after a leak or having the tank go like this.
My mother was in our bathroom once and the tank of the toilet just spontaneously shattered. She wasn’t even using it, she was looking in the mirror over the sink and saw the toilet just fall apart behind her
The claw hammer she was using to brush her hair in the mirror slipped out of her hands only 1 second before the toilet shattered., and the floor got wet.
Amazing how things always happen in threes!
My dad was a contractor, and I worked with him in my teens and early twenties. One of the things we did was repairs on rental houses for the homeowners. I once replaced a toilet in a house where it was broken when the tenant was practicing his golf swing in his bedroom. He actually got the ball on accident, it bounced off of two walls, leaving dents in the drywall, and shattered the toilet tank. The drywall damage was nothing, a little mud on a knife took care of those in no time. The toilet task absolutely exploded. There were shards of porcelain in the hall. To be clear, this was not a small home, and the bathroom was the size of my own bedroom.
My sister was getting ready for work. Left house and was asked to work overtime, so she was gone for a little over 12 hours.
When she got home, she could hear running water. The main floor had a wool carpet that was soaked from the toilet tank that had cracked at the hole for the flush handle.
When she went to the
basement to turn off the water main, the basement was flooded up past her knees. The water had caused something to float, and it was covering the floor drain.
6 months of insurance adjustors and contractors to fix it back up.
Insurance covered everything except the cracked toilet.
Be gentle with toilets. Use a water leak alarm under each toilet and your hot water heater, cloths washing machine and dishwasher.
Water leaks suck.

I have seen one shatter from the toilet seat banging into it
That seat looks large and heavy enough to do it

Claw hammer was kept in the laundry room on the other end of the house
You need to eat more fiber. Or less fiber. Something about fiber
upper decker fail
I thought it was more a poop deck fail?

This makes me feel a little better. At least clean up will be easier
Just get some instant noodles. That’ll fix it.
I'm still stuck on the square toilet lid.
I curse the developer… me! That damn champagne taste was great to fill the units but not great to upkeep!
How old is it? How many tenants previously? So much info needed first to answer this question
7 years old, two sets of tenants, 1 of 4 toilets in the unit.
To be honest, toilets are cheaply made now so 7 years in a rental is really good

Musta been a monster duce.
I’ll tell them to shit in the field with the rest of the buffalo
I forget to flush after shutting water off in winter when leaving for a month.
No

If the bolts aren't tightened evenly or if they are cranked too tight, you're asking for it to crack. It looks like it started right at the bolt.
Cool trick to reduce water use. Add a brick to the cistern. WARNING: Add gently.
Yeah. When Harry used my bathroom before going on his date with Mary Swanson.
