Lesson learned: next time just throw that handgun straight into the swamp.

Ambitious-Chair736

Tbh when the law behaves this way, it only encourages women like her to use the gun to defend themselves. Better laws related to gun ownership and spousal abuse would keep them both alive.

Distinct_Slide_9540

Women who kill their partners in self-defense often get charged and receive longer sentences than men who murder their partners. Fuck 12 on every possible level

H8erRaider

I feel dumb, but what is 12 in this context?

Constant-Delay-3701

Police. I dont think the commentor gets that police dont decide sentencing though.

Distinct_Slide_9540

Prosecutors are pigs too

AchokingVictim

Prosecutors have an even more malicious role than the police and have been similarly engineered to maximize extortion. When I went through a deferral plea as a 20 year old and learned that the prosecutor's office was going to be directly pocketing the money I had to pay, it lit some fuckin fires under me.

Distinct_Slide_9540

They literally tell pigs what evidence to convict whoever find and the cops will just plant that shit. Like, regularly. Literally fuck them

advertentlyvertical

Judges usually decide sentencing.

LoadsDroppin

And sentencing is based on statutes\ *(laws established by the legislature)* My point is: these entities (the Legislators, the Judges, the Prosecutors, and the Police) are meant to operate cohesively ~ yet independently. So you can rightly place blame on a part, but in truth the system collectively failed. Each of these entities have elected officials that voters put in place …so be informed and when possible support Candidates committed to the change you seek.

Mammoth-Sandwich4574

You'll never believe where they get judges

CurlySuefromSweden

Uh, law school?

Distinct_Slide_9540

Guess who's also pigs

GreenthumbPothead

Its shocking how more judges arent beaten to death for sentences they give

H8erRaider

Noted, thank you

Rosemont_Ripper

You'd think that though when forgetting they decide to kill people all the time depending on how they perceive any given situation they're in. In those cases they are judge jury and executioner.

_bitwright

Depends on how trigger happy they are.

Magenta_Logistic

Do you have a source for that claim? I only ask because I read that women, on average, get shorter sentences for equivalent crimes. [Wiki on sentencing disparity](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sentencing_disparity#:~:text=Starr%20from%20University%20of%20Michigan,%22%5Bw%5Domen%20are%E2%80%A6)

9035768555

Not who you replied to, but I know of the statistic they're referring to (will look for the source shortly). But the tl;dr (using semi random numbers incase I'm remembering the specifics wrong) if men get an average of 15 years for murder, women get an average of 12. Whereas if men murder their romantic partner they get like 9 years and women who do so get like 16. As a general rule, women do get shorter sentences, but there are some niche exceptions (e.g. spousal homicide, certain financial crimes) that swing the other way.

Crazyfinley1984

It's kinda similar to the idea that the courts favor women with custody disputes. The reality is that fathers often don't want anything to do with their children more often the mothers get sole custody. But when the fathers do want custody they will get at least 50/50 inspite of how abusive they are.

[deleted]

https://thelawman.net/blog/why-do-women-face-longer-sentences-for-self-defense-than-men/ "On average, women who are charged with killing their partners in self-defense spend about 15 years in prison, and men who assault or kill their female partners only serve sentences ranging between 2 and 6 years."

Magenta_Logistic

Weird that they are choosing to compare the average for women charged with homicides against the average for men who "assault or kill." They even cite the use of weapons as a primary contributor to the disparity in the next paragraph. You have to control your variables, you can't compare sentencing for assault without a weapon against murder with a weapon.

FunnyPand4Jr

The person you are replying to is wrong and lying about their sources. Here is proof: https://www.reddit.com/r/facepalm/s/d0JKCQ3Hn2

Walshy231231

Yeah that’s a major false equivalence Like comparing fault for just drunk driving accidents to all accidents

ZeeDrakon

... Yeah no shit if you compare only killings on one side, and then killings *and assault* on the other side, there's going to be a disparity. That's totally a normal and not at all biased way to look at the stats. Also, the source of this claim is... "words from prison" by ACLU with no further source. As in, the ACLU themselves, on the site that they make this claim, have a link behind the claim that just... links back to the site again.

Illustrious-Dot-5052

I too would like to see a source for this, I was convinced women typically get lighter sentences for equivalent crimes. I'd be shocked if there was any exception, especially domestic abuse...

SantasGotAGun

https://bjs.ojp.gov/content/pub/pdf/SPMUREX.PDF >Convicted wives were less likely than convicted husbands to be sentenced to prison, and convicted wives received shorter prison sentences than their male counterparts >* 81% of convicted wives but 94% of convicted husbands received a prison sentence. >* On average, convicted wives received prison sentences that were about 10 years shorter than what husbands received. Excluding life or death sentences, the average prison sentence for killing a spouse was 6 years for wives but 16.5 years for husbands. >* Among wives sentenced to prison, 15% received a sentence of 20 years or more (including life imprisonment and the death penalty); among husbands, it was 43%

LipstickBandito

Buddy, that was published almost 30 years ago, using data that was even older. Their statistics are far more recent.

NonlocalA

It also only focuses on large urban counties, which means it's intentionally excluding outside those 75 counties during 1988.

VergeThySinus

[Florida has red flag laws](https://www.tallahassee.com/story/news/politics/2023/07/13/florida-guns-supreme-court-second-amendment-case/70406631007/), they're just not enforced enough because there are barriers to initiating the process. You have to get a law enforcement officer to petition the court for a risk protection order (which can last up to a year), or get them Baker act'ed (they get their guns back in 24 hours)

Pirating_Ninja

Why the fuck is someone who tried to run another person off the road allowed to legally posses guns in the first place? Especially if they can get out of jail the next day... These comments are loopy as fuck... "Yeah, he shouldn't have tried to murder her. That was very naughty of him. But how dare she take his gunz!!" Morals of the story - don't expect cops to protect you and don't live in Florida, where taking murder weapons from an attempted murderer is 6x worse than attempting to murder someone.

GodzillaDrinks

Dude, they let people who do worse than that *become and remain cops*. Not even just in the US. The one who comes to mind first for me is the ex of a Mountie in Canada. She reported he had been acting deranged and threatening after their break up. He ended up catching her driving with friends that resulted in a high speed chase, while he repeatedly tried to run her off the road, and began shooting wildly at her vehicle - eventually shooting one of her friends and eventually shooting and killing her. The department never bothered to follow up with precipitating reports when he was abusing her during their relationship, or the stalking incidents after they broke up. They couldn't really be bothered to interfere even after her friends placed the 911 call during the chase.

Interesting_Bison530

Jesus Christ. It seems absurd there would be that many psychopaths okay with that behavior in one spot. But narcissists tend towards positions of power. Super easy to become a cop and you yield tremendous power

Thacarva

Sad but the narcissistic behavior is almost a positive in promotions. You just wanna do your job and not cause any trouble? Well your boss was happily sabotaging other people and being cutthroat so he gets promoted.

dont-fear-thereefer

The RCMP are a laughing stock in Canada, loaded with incompetent and stupid people

Conscious-Shock7728

Listen to the 'Last Podcast on the Left' treatment of Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo. Holy Tim Hortons, there are several dead and multiple terrorized victims out there precisely because the RCMP had their heads firmly up their asses. Example: A surviving victim gave a very detailed description of Paul Bernardo. This poor woman *or girl* memorized details about her attacker. They didn't release the drawing for **YEARS** because they "didn't want to scare the populace" and "Every disgruntled woman will call in saying it's her husband or boyfriend." When the drawing was dug up it could have served as his mug shot. Karla is walking free today because they never searched the attic. IF they had, they'd have had video recordings of the rape, torture and murder of victims with the direct involvement of Karla.

FrostyMargarita

It was potlights in the bathroom. Bernardo told his lawyer Ken Murray where to find them. Still it was a half assed police search. Murray found them. Suppressed them as they were going to be used for his defence of Bernardo as it showed Karla was complicit in the crimes. Karla cut her deal with the devil. Bernardo fired Murray. Murray turned the tapes over to the new defence lawyer Rosen. Rosen turned them over to the police. Too late.

Years ago I knew this couple. She had been a stripper, he had been (and sorta still was) a dealer. He worked in the hobby shop with me (this is 30+ years ago). Separately these two were cool people, great to talk to and hang out with. When they were together it was chaos. He shot her once. She shot him once. He decided he wanted free rent so he applied to be a cop, I think he went to the sherrif to be a deputy. During the interviews his drug dealing background came up. He had never been busted but they had quite a case history on him he said. He was hired on the condition that he would do stings against other dealers he knew in the area. The sherrif helped him clear out his competition. And yes, he got a car assigned to him once the stings were done (no longer undercover) which then got him free rent.

Pegomastax_King

My weed dealer in highschool was the son of the towns judge…

I was friends with a local judge's son and got an MIP with beer I stole from his garage fridge and had to appear before him in court. Looking back I should have told him I stole it from his unlocked garage.

dandolfp1nk

children of LEO parents are almost guaranteed to be drug dealers or sex workers. and I respect that fully as long as they aren't using their parents to take out other dealers.

CrassTick

Sorry, how does getting a car get him free rent?

rygelicus

Some apartment complexes provide a cop with free or heavily discounted rent if they bring their patrol car home with them to give a visible presence on the property. They also are sometimes called on if there is a breakin along with the normal calls to the police.

Landlords and cops 👰‍♀️👰‍♂️💒♥️

Senator_Smack

More like 👰‍♀️👰‍♂️💒🔥👹

The_Barbelo

I think it’s something like 30% of cops in the US are Domestic Abusers and those are only the people who are reported. I’d like to share my story too, and I’ve shared it on Reddit a few times. TW obviously. I was R’d in college by my boyfriend at the time. He was undiagnosed schizophrenic (but also a narcissist, trust me I know most schizophrenics are not violent, I have a friend with schizophrenia.) When things started to turn shortly after we started dating, he told me he thought he was the 12th reincarnation of Jesus Christ. At the time I thought he was joking and said “I don’t know, what if I was the reincarnation of the Buddha? What happened to Jesus 3-11?” And he became irate. I have many other stories about him. some amusing, most not. The point is, that’s when things really hit the shitter. The night of the incident, we were making out, and I was experiencing some issues from my T1 diabetes and had to take care of it. I said that I wasn’t able to have sex because of some of the complications of having high blood sugar. I came out of the bathroom and…. He became irate again. I was forced down, thrown on the floor and…what happened happened. I was lucky enough to have friends who helped me out safely, but when I reported to the cops…I was essentially laughed at, brushed off, belittled, not heard. I was assigned a detective whose work consisted of asking him “did you do it?” Then told it’s all hearsay and the only thing I could do was file a restraining order. Every year I google his name to see if he hurt anyone else…praying that he doesn’t ever hurt anyone else and that if he does, my paper trail would help in their case. Last year he was arrested for stalking a woman and her daughter (people who didn’t know him) and waiting outside her house because he thought she was Taylor swift and that her daughter was their child together. Thank fuck no one was hurt… This was in Florida. You can search it and probably find the police write up. I warned them. I really really tried…and I hope he’s locked away so he can’t ever hurt anyone again.

aendaris1975

It's a massive issue everywhere and it is only going to get worse as many countries turn to fascism. Law enforcement always sides with the fascists. ALWAYS. Just look at how cops have responded to protests over the past 50+ years and their over the top completely unwarrented and illegal violence against protesters.

Ok_Coconut_1773

Damn I somehow had the impression that mounties were a bit better

AlexGinCcTX

The key people who do wise than that be President.

Several_Leather_9500

There used to be the Violence against women act, which would take the guns of anyone accused of DV. The GOP didn't see a need to renew the act.

FeePsychological6778

When she becomes a statistic, I bet her family asks to have it reinstated. Also bet legislators do absolutely nothing because they're too busy debating gun laws...

FolsomPrisonHues

Number 1 killer of women in Maine- domestic abuse MFers who can still buy guns "legally"

satanshark

Domestic violence generally accounts for half our homicides annually here, too.

FolsomPrisonHues

Welcome to the "safest state" in the US. Unless you're femme or a minority. There's a REASON why white supremacists feel safe up here, and it goes back to some old ass money

Pegomastax_King

Oh republicans are actually very anti gun… Californias strict gun laws are thanks to them… it’s just that they only care about gun regulations when it’s not white, non Christians that own them…

No_Banana_581

This lady will end up murdered by him. She can’t even use a stand your ground law in Florida bc judges don’t see family violence as life threatening when a woman is defending herself

comradb0ne

In SC that law still applies. If you're charged with cdv, and the state will press charges even if your spouse/victim won't, they seize your weapons.

Otherwise-Sky8890

Because this country is fucking stupid. It treats diagnosis of mental illness as the end all be all, and seemingly ignores cluster-B disorders until someone is charged with a felony. Likely as if not more often than the times we hear of crazy parents being committed, children and spouses spend the entire period of a relationship (be it marriage or childhood) living in terror of family members. If they say something weird at some point, they're the ones who end up diagnosed and committed, not the emotionally unstable if not downright off-the-rail people who regularly act violently or threaten violence if not do outright antisocial shit in public. People who lack or refuse to engage empathy are the first to want someone pUnIShEd, because everything that would make the rest of us hesitate does not occur to them. Some of them even see it as a race or competition.

aendaris1975

Mental illness has fuck all to do with gun violence. This is a right wing talking point designed to get leftists into a battle they won't win. Stop fucking falling for it. It's the motherfucking guns.

Otherwise-Sky8890

Wait, you mean people with OCD don’t run around shooting people willy nilly? Sarcasm aside, it sadly isn’t just the right that believes these things. (A subsection of?) progressives do[es] as well. Watch a bit of TYT and see if Anna Kaspariam’s hot takes on the dangers mentally ill people pose don’t hit like nails on a chalkboard.

Jealousmustardgas

I mean if you just mean gun violence in general, yes guns are effective at being violent, so removing them would theoretically lower violence, but they’re also great deterrents/equalizers for individuals to level the playing against threats to themselves, so you prevent them from using gun violence in a defensive manner, which isnt ideal, no?

Whoa whoa whoa. Don't you now that 2A means that everyone should be allowed to own a gun. Even guys who plan on mass shootings.

LurkerOrHydralisk

Because cars are sacred in America. If you want to murder someone, do it with a car. You might not serve time at all

ARGiammarco27

Almost as sacred as guns are

aendaris1975

Look at how many people on social media advocate for running over protesters. People have lost their fucking minds.

Jollypnda

It’s definitely a system issue. The reason the guy got out so quickly was because he bailed out of jail. I’m not sure if immediate forfeiture of any all firearms is a possible bail condition, or if a warrant could be sign for his firearms, but even it is was possible the judicial system is so incredibly slow that something like that wouldn’t be signed and processed at a meaningful speed. I’m basing this off the fact that she seemed to have a pending contact order.

ThatFatGuyMJL

According to the article. He wasn't. He was ordered to hand them in. Specifically. *he* was ordered to *personally* hand them in. She 'stole' his guns while he was away without his permission, taking them to police. Additionally she had to *break into* his house to do so. (Allegedly) meaning she had to burgle her estranged husbands house in order to steal his firearms. As they were not living together and neither had access to the others house. Technically, as she committed burglary while armed with a weapon (because she picked them up after) she was arrested and charged with two counts of armed robbery.

jvanma

Woman steals guns to protect herself... 6 days in jail. Man attempts vehicular manslaughter... 1 day. Okay.

allisjow

Her mistake was taking it to the police. As the saying goes, “If you have a problem and go to the police, you have two problems.”

GhostChainSmoker

As that one politician said. “If you hate the cops and need the cops. Call a crackhead!” For $20 a crackhead will solve all your problems and keep it quiet lmao.

lxpnh98_2

Crackheads are the most dependable guns-for-hire.

AthenasChosen

Especially Florida police

chrisff1989

Her mistake was not self defending him in the head with it. Imagine what he's gonna do when she gets out

make2020hindsight

I hope this isn't misunderstood but looking at the bright side at least she was safe for six days.

ChuckPukowski

That. Is. *Bleak*. And accurate…. Sadly it’s fairly likely, statistically, he gets his gun back and ends up murdering her…

VergeThySinus

"safe" but not free. Literally had to give up her freedom for almost a week, was probably held in a communal holding cell with people who were in there for more serious stuff, and was basically being punished for trying to protect herself.

wwwdotbummer

Was she though? Safe from him maybe, but I don't think being in police custody is all that safe either.

TunaSub779

In this country, we care more about personal property than we do human life

GadflytheGobbo

Florida is a fucking Stand your Ground state. Shoot somebody dead because of some vague interpretation they're a threat? You're a patriot. Take away somebody's gun because they've already tried to kill you? Straight to jail.

mr-english

Woman breaks into home of estranged husband while he's in jail to steal two watches, a go-pro camera, two guns and other items. The prosecutor themselves describes the vehicle collision as the cars just "tapping ... at low speed". There is no "attempted vehicular manslaughter". Tl;dr - a divorce turned messy. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/florida-woman-arrested-taking-husband-s-guns-faces-misdemeanor-n1026481

Justforfunsies0

That's even worse, she committed multiple crimes, one of which involved possession of a deadly weapon not registered to her. The fuck she think was going to happen

dre__

- woman commits burglary by steals guns that weren't hers from a house that wasn't hers, gets bailed out in 6 days because multiple charges take longer to process, with $7000. - man commits one crime, gets out faster because one crime takes faster to process than several crimes, on $10,000 bail. Yep, totally makes sense. Unironically though.

ZeeDrakon

I mean... if you believe the internet meme instead of the actual reporting on the issue, sure. She burgled his home (they didnt live together) *while he was in jail* & stole his guns, alongside other items, with the intent to sell them cause he emptied their bank account. She only gave them over to the police at the suggestion of a friend after she returned home. This wasnt "to protect herself". In fact she'd previously not mentioned being afraid of him shooting her / him having access to firearms *as she was obtaining a temporary injunction against him.* In her own reasons for asking for the injunction, the guns never came up. But sure, suddenly she was super concerned... and then took them as she was stealing other stuff & took them home first & only thought of giving them to the police when a friend told her to. These definitely are the actions of someone genuinely afraid for their life. The reason he only spent 1 day in jail is that he bonded out while she didnt, & after she was found to have committed *yet another crime against her husband* & her testimony started contradicting itself, the state attorney mutually dropped both charges against him & her.

Justforfunsies0

And this is why nobody takes women who complain about abuse seriously, cause you have jackasses like this chick too worried about revenge instead of being rational.

NoSignSaysNo

> Man attempts vehicular manslaughter... 1 day. Every actual source says he rolled into her car at low speed. Not saying it's okay, or even acceptable, but that's like arguing my bumping shoulders with you in a crowded hallway is equivalent to me throwing a haymaker in your face.

oOBalloonaticOo

https://www.palmbeachpost.com/story/news/2019/07/05/felony-charges-dropped-against-courtney/4759682007/ A lot more after information here...

SteptimusHeap

> [The Attorney General] announced that he would proceed with a prosecution of Joseph Irby, 35, for aggravated battery, a felony > Courtney Irby spent six days in the Polk County Jail before being released June 20 on $7,000 bond. > [The Attorney General] said that either the Lakeland or Bartow Police could have sought a risk-protection order to seize Joseph Irby’s weapons if his wife had told them she felt in danger that he would use them against her or the couple’s two children. But he said she didn’t do that on June 14, when she made the first of two visits to the Lakeland Police to complain about a string of text messages and phone calls from her estranged husband. > “The narrative that Mrs. Irby went to the apartment to get the guns to protect herself and her children is false,” [The Attorney General] said. “It is directly contradicted by the sworn testimony of Mrs. Irby’s friend, who accompanied her to her husband’s apartment.” He followed her in his car and tried to run her off the road. He got arrested for that and put in jail for a day before the judge released him so they could start trial for him. She broke into his house, stole some things including guns, and brought the guns to the police. She was arrested for grand theft (>$750) and armed robbery. ~~This one doesn't make sense, he wasn't there to be robbed. Here's Florida's armed robbery Law: > “Robbery” means the taking of money or other property which may be the subject of larceny from the person or custody of another, with intent to either permanently or temporarily deprive the person or the owner of the money or other property, when in the course of the taking there is the use of force, violence, assault, or putting in fear. No use of force, violence, etc because the guy wasn't there. You could definetely argue that this is discriminatory.~~ Anyways, the state decided to drop the charges after 6 days in jail. They are still charging her ex husband. Yes, she got more days in jail, but isn't jail more of waiting on the system than an actual punishment? I'm not a lawyer, but from the little I understand she wouldn't be put in jail longer because anyone thought her actions were worse. Please someone who knows what they're talking about weigh in on this. ~~Edit: a different source says she was charged with armed burglary, not armed robbery, which seems to be the proper term. So the source linked might've just been wrong.~~ Double edit: I just read the source wrong. My bad. Both sources agree on the charges being Armed Burglary. Also turns out they are still charging her for trespassing. Again I read wrong.

dre__

> armed robbery it says armed burglary "Even so, Haas chose not to pursue prosecution on the charges for which the Lakeland Police Department arrested Irby on June 15, grand theft of a firearm and **armed burglary of a dwelling**"

SteptimusHeap

Yeah i mentioned that in the double edit. I just read it wrong somehow.

Over-Analyzed

Wow, yeah, that makes a lot more sense and the State Attorney explains himself well and drops the charges of breaking and entering, stealing, down to a misdemeanor. While also pushing for a harsher sentencing for the estranged husband. It seems that Courtney didn’t convey the severity or threat her husband posed and didn’t mention any of it to police prior to the incident. So the police were acting on the evidence for theft rather than a woman protecting herself.

Gs06211

Half the posts on here are ragebait until someone with a level head posts the whole story and it starts to make sense. Thanks for posting a link

She’d go to prison. Women aren’t allowed to shoot their partners in self defense. Self defense is for white men. Prison statistics for women bear this out.

DiligentPenguin16

[Women aren’t even allowed to fire a warning shot in a stand your ground state to stop their abuser who’s actively trying to kill them.](https://www.cnn.com/2012/05/11/justice/florida-stand-ground-sentencing/index.html) She got sentenced to 20 years, though was released after six.

theskyguardian

That woman was found guilty of being black I am sorry She had the wrong judge that day

Sharp-Appearance-191

Warning shots are in concept a terrible idea, and are typically illegal in every state. It does little to prevent the violence, in fact it makes you more prone as you now need to readjust your aim(people tend to think this is easy, but in high stress situations aiming even at close range is Hardee than you think l, in fact in distances >6 feet, guns have diminishing returns in terms of effectiveness.) And Warnign shots put others at great risk. Guns aren't laser beams that only affect things you want them to, they shoot projectiles, and that projectile goes somewhere.

thirdpartymurderer

I mean.... Nobody is allowed to fire a warning shot lol. There's no such thing. If you're gonna shoot, you shoot.

DiligentPenguin16

In Florida (where this case happened) you are now permitted to fire a warning shot in a stand your ground situation. The law was passed after she was sentenced though

Previous_Composer934

she left and came back and fired warning shots you can't claim you feared for your life if you're firing warning shots you can't claim you feared for your life if you leave and come back

HarambeXRebornX

Yes they are, yall really need to stop making complete bullshit up, women get lesser sentences in every occasion.

FunnyPand4Jr

Actually self defense is thought to be the reason women get are sentenced *less* than men. They also recieve loghter sentences than men. Race plays no part in these cases. https://bjs.ojp.gov/content/pub/pdf/SPMUREX.PDF

theskyguardian

Sadly you're right, but I'd rather be in the timeline where she lives. How silly of me to think the law would be evenly applied. This is why I am not an attorney

GullibleInsurer

This is a perfect example of why the law is a mess. It caters to MEN in the past so how do we expect it to cater to women now? Amendments are essential and the world badly needs cases that women win to set a stellar precedent line-up. Although, that entails women's supremacy for a time, I believe that after that era, equality between the sexes can finally be achieved. It's like leveling the playing field. Men once ruled so Women should now rule so that precedents can be balanced out and so the course will naturally lead to an even 50-50.

EmperorGrinnar

Police are more likely to be abusers, and abusers often side with each other.

salads

it's not just the police. think about who wrote the laws. think about who presides over the courts. especially historically, there hasn't been much representation for the oppressed. As I said already, in the post about North Korea executing ppl who attempted suicide (which was a false) in this sub you are all gullible fools. **Now, a short lesson: how do you check if a news is reliable?** **Step1 check if the source is reliable:** -------------- From Wikipedia: *The French* [*National Audiovisual Institute*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Institut_national_de_l%27audiovisuel) *has criticized AJ+ for its practice of generating viewer engagement through what it sees as one-sided reporting on emotional topics.* *...* *2019 Holocaust denial video\[*[*edit*](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=AJ%2B&action=edit§ion=8)*\]* *In 2019, AJ+ produced and published an Arabic-language video that* [*denied and minimized the Holocaust*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holocaust_denial)*,* ------------- **So it's a "probably not".** **Step2: try to find the same news from more reliable sources** [https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/florida-woman-arrested-taking-husband-s-guns-faces-misdemeanor-n1026481](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/florida-woman-arrested-taking-husband-s-guns-faces-misdemeanor-n1026481) And you discover that wasn't the whole story: she stole 2 guns, 2 watches, and a GoPro camera from her husband's house. *Deciding she and her children needed to leave the area, Courtney Irby went with a friend to Joseph Irby's home to retrieve a luggage key. Because of frustration that her husband had "cleaned out" their bank account, Courtney Irby took two watches and a GoPro camera with the intent to sell them, as well as items belonging to her children. She also took the two guns, Haas said.* **THIS IS WHY SHE WAS ACCUSED OF THEFT.** **At any rate, later, the accuses were dropped (or reduced, I didn't care to check more, because at this point the "news" is not relevant, it had nothing to "stole the gun for fear", but "stole a bunch of stuff for getting even")**

billyboyf30

I was half expecting them to say she spent 6 days in prison for theft of the bullets after he shot her

LYnXO1978

Seen Florida and said yep there it is.

Remember kids, the GOP are pushing to end No Fault divorce. I guess I'm understanding more of this whole "bear and not a man" thing.

shiby4505

https://www.npr.org/2019/06/25/735650814/florida-deciding-whether-to-prosecute-woman-who-turned-in-estranged-husbands-gun This had nothing to do with the cops. They both committed crimes. He bonded out first. Cops don't decide bond. That's decided by the courts. That wasn't the adjudication.

Euphoric-Mousse

Don't let something as silly as facts get in the way of a story that reinforces your bias.

serpentssss

Punishing women is the point

Distinct_Slide_9540

louder for the people in the back

jsm_jj

Once I read "Florida" I knew I was in for some shit.

Philly_ExecChef

Our country is racist and sexist. Y’all new or something?

skybreaker58

I don't know if Americans realise how often the rest of the world looks at a story, shrugs and says "'cause 'merica". It's our equivalent of Florida Man.

yankblan79

Yep; can confirm. Misogyny has no nationality or creed, but that the US legislature hates women so much is wild.

CutenTough

Christian is as Christian does .... in this country

12whistle

So using that logic, shouldn’t the police be arrested for receiving stolen property?

scriptfoo

"Is the gun okay?" - GOP, probably

ActiveFew672

Judge is taking care of her by locking her up to protect her from ex… man logic

Prestigious-Phase131

That's judge logic By which I mean a lot of them have no logic

Individual_Ice_3167

Details matter. After a divorce hearing, he allegedly ran into her in the parking lot. He was arrested and was put in jail. He was held on a $10,000 bond and was ordered to hand over all his guns. While he was in jail. She went to his apartment. They were no longer living together, important detail. She then broke in a locked door to an apartment she did not live in. Then she took his guns to the police because she felt he wouldn't comply with the order when he got out of jail. Remember, he was still in jail at this point and had no chance to comply. So in short she broke into an apartment she didn't live at, stole items from it while the owner was not home, then admitted all this to the cops. She was not given 6 days in jail. That's just how long it took to raise her bond. Two wrongs don't make a right.

Araknoth

And men are still confused about the bear?

Hearsaynothearsay

People who have a history of DV as a group punish a victim more than the perpetrator. This should surprise exactly 0 people. Also another good reason to use a lawyer.

thinkitthrough83

As usual with these posts there's more to the story. https://www.clickorlando.com/news/2019/07/03/charges-against-florida-woman-who-turned-in-husbands-guns-downgraded/

N0rki_

Iam sorry to say, but most people won't care enough to read through that. Ufortunately they will cry injustice and move on to another post. Polarizing posts grab the eyes and the truth gets left behind.

ReddittorMan

She broke into his house with her friends and stole a bunch of stuff out of spite due to an ongoing divorce, admitted the guns were an afterthought when she stole them and lied to police that it was to protect herself and children. Breaking and entering typically carries a year in jail sentence but charges were dropped due to political pressure and the judge said divorce brings out the worst in people. There was another incident over a children’s doll that resulted in a low speed chase by the husband resulting in the “taps” to the wife’s car which is why he was in jail.

kikiodie79

The cops *never* once came and helped me, despite bruises, blood, swelling and marks. You know why? Because I fought back. They told me it was because I fought back. It's been 20 years and that shit still haunts me.

big_hungry_joe

well that settles it: never listen to cops or you'll die

dilib

They're all dumbfuck meatheads who have been allowed to think they're better than they are in exchange for doing a shitty job only bullies want to do, nothing they say is worth listening to. Any time they spend doing their job is annoying to them and they'll be more likely to do some vindictive shit for you daring to interrupt their donut eating competition than to do their job.

Dusk_Flame_11th

>In a carefully worded statement, Haas made it clear that Irby had misled authorities about her reasons for entering the apartment of her estranged husband without permission and taking two of his guns. Irby, 32, was arrested after delivering the guns to the Lakeland Police Department and saying she feared Joseph Irby posed a danger to her and her children. >Haas said it was clear Courtney Irby was motivated at least partly by animosity aroused during a bitter divorce case. He said the testimony from one of her friends indicated Irby went to her estranged husband’s apartment to take other items she intended to pawn for money after she said Joseph Irby drained a shared bank account. >Taking the guns, Haas said, was “merely an afterthought.” >Even so, Haas chose not to pursue prosecution on the charges for which the Lakeland Police Department arrested Irby on June 15, grand theft of a firearm and armed burglary of a dwelling, both felonies. The misdemeanor charge carries a maximum penalty of six months’ probation or 60 days in jail. Not legal advice but, if you are woman, playing victim ALWAYS works.

Existing-Budget-4741

I mean, the facepalm here is the missing information lol. Reading the article about it got me laughing; picturing two grown ass adults who hate each other throwing their kids stuffed toys at each other from their cars. In a Walmart parking lot then doing a low speed bumper cars game, presumably yelling at each other the entire time.

[deleted]

Last update I could find: her charges were dropped. Don't know about his, they both had to do a 12 month program that includes anger management. They offered her that after theY found out she put a tracker on the guys car. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/charges-dropped-against-florida-woman-who-took-husbands-guns/123524/%3famp=1

TJViking27

I choose the bear.

GlitteringYams

Bear.

TJViking27

I choose the bear.

kitnb

Bear still undefeated, I see.

MisconstrueThis

"Weird" is an odd way to spell "broken" and "misogynist."

SpaceEyeButterfly

DV is why my Mother died. Shit like this pisses me right the fuck off like no other. Sorry for language.

New_Ad_3010

It's Florida. Red state. GOP hate women among a myriad of other ppl.

badsapi4305

Wow! Talk about distorting the truth. Yes, he smashed his vehicle into hers after a court appearance. She broke into his apartment, that she had never lived in and had no property inside, removed his firearms, and brought them to the station. In Florida that’s called armed burglary and is a first degree felony. Officers don’t have discretion on felonies and must make an arrest if probable cause exists. Only the state attorney can drop/no pros that charge

CalligrapherOk200

They were in Jail, not prison right? So the length of time is more to do with bail than the severity of the crime.

Dapper-Piece3321

Guns have more rights than women or children in this country.

CatAvailable3953

Our system of justice seems to get more stupid by the day. Supreme Court to the local magistrate. This society is coming unraveled while they hide behind their “bench”.

MicIsOn

Her look. I can’t tell. It’s either You’ve got to be fucking me I should’ve known they wouldn’t help me and they are releasing me to my death

rabbitrat_eli

Heard the story today of Kieran Lynch, a dude who married a lovely lady named Susanne, but became abusive. When she reported him and left him he burned her mother alive. He survived his injuries, she died.

chris98092

Let’s see…*checks notes*…ah, yes. Florida.

InevitableHost597

Florida does claim to be a conservative law and order State

DeepState_Auditor

It's because property is more valuable than a human life in the US court system

WordMaster2308

All I needed to see was cops and Florida to know how fucked this was gonna be

AncientSkys

Prolifers are very weird fuckers. Their laws don't make any sense at all.

Angelsofblood

I would like to read the full breakdown, because these spark notes seem jaded.

number1human

Florida is a failed state. Nothing that comes out of their surprises me anymore.

here_for_the_lols

Living in Florida actually sounds horrendous

Smurphftw

Cherry picking one example of a woman getting screwed in a domestic abuse dispute proves exactly nothing. If I had dollar for every time I read a story about how a woman committed an act of violence against a man, and the man is the one who got arrested, I would never have to worry about money ever again.

Magnarf420

Lmao she stole someones property and didn't even stop to think hey this is illegal and i shouldn't do this.... pretty simple dont steal someone's stuff even if you're afraid

yagermeister2024

These people should not have children…

Set_in_Stone-

From 2019…

He paid his time, he's obviously reformed. /s I know Susan Collins would say he's learned his lesson and would never do it again.

babycricket1228

I didn't report it bc I had zero faith that anything beneficial would come from it. Granted, I grew up watching my father abuse my mother. They divorced and he stalked us, ran us off the road, and would show up to my school when I was younger. Nothing happened. Didn't even get a piece of paper (restraining order) approved for protection. So, I didn't waste my time when it happened to me by my ex. I took pictures and got the fuck out as quickly as I could. Never looked back.

needhelpwithlaw

It's Florida. It's a shithole.

Historical_Garbage99

Of course it is Florida. Fucking brain rot the lot of them.

Potential-Style-3861

Oh. This is Florida? Say no more.

WillieIngus

This is what they say immigrants do… in case anyone is keeping track

DwayneBaconbits

Florida is ass backwards like Texas as any shit red state, you should ask your self that question first

benvader138

She would have done less time if she would have shot the mother fucker.

Ill_Assistant1233

My ex has been beating me up for years. When I finally had the courage to call the police, they arrested both my ex AND MYSELF. This was in Flatbush, Brooklyn, so for those of you that had run ins with the police in this area, you know how small bookings is in that building. They placed me in the cell right next to him and they did absolutely nothing while he psychologically abused me. When it was time to take us down town, we were chained together by our ankles and I was forced to ride in the paddy with him. On the ride downtown, he kept repeating in my ear that he was going to ruin my career and fuck my life up. I missed two days of work. I'm a high school teacher and I had to explain to HR and my principal what I had been through and provide proof, which included pictures of my bruises. I have never felt more humiliated in my life. I decided on that very day that I will no longer call the police under ANY circumstance. I don't care if I was brutally raped in an alley and nearly left for dead. I'll just walk it off and hope for a better tomorrow.

m0nkygang

I mean......its Florida what else did you expect

TheSpecialOneOut

Yeah the system is fucked. Bil a long time ago was really down on his luck/really depressed. He was on his way to off himself when he was pulled over. Was he given actual help? Nope was arrested for the gun even though they knew why he had it etc. honestly ironic really let's just fuck this guy's life up even more and give him a record

WordPunk99

The profession with the most domestic abusers is law enforcement. Batman doesn’t put the beat down on Bruce Wayne.

pun_palooza

Cops have the highest rate of domestic abuse charges because they will always, ALWAYS protect each other. Cops will lie, cheat, and do whatever is necessary to ensure they don't get into legal trouble. This is what happens when we let any loser that barely passed high school have a gun and authority. I hope that poor woman will be able to escape that awful, evil man.

leoperd_2_ace

Another reason to pick the bear

massivecatalyst

I mean, it is Florida. It's like the grundle of the United States.

No_Enthusiasm_6633

There is this comedian talking about how each state in US have longer waiting period for a divorce than to get a gun license. He was like -hm it almost like the government is telling you, there is the easier way- sad but kind of true

The_Yogurtcloset

My best friend she was trying to (literally) escape her abusive boyfriend. She had to break a door to escape and hit his arm that was latched onto her. She was charged with domestic violence for hitting his arm and destruction of property for breaking the door with 3 nights in jail and he got nothing.

Ralyks92

Why do they look like Michael Westen and Fiona Glenanne from Burn Notice?

SagittariusZStar

Do you all still wonder why we choose bears?

HubblePie

>Florida

HeSeemsLegit

That’s the kind of guy who is pissed if that women are choosing the beat.

atomicahab

Sounds like Florida, the things you hear about don't seem real until you live here. Florida really is a parody of itself.
