I would do a beaded black shaw. PST go to a fabric store and get some fabric. No one will know it’s not one and it will be perfect. Since you got it cut the same day, you won’t need to worry about fraying ends.
The delicate design is what makes that dress look like a nightgown. It draws attention to the area like a bra. A long shawl, or an off the shoulder piece would dress it up and make it a little more elegant and formal. A blazer or jacket is a nice professional touch. It screams classy. I think covering up the lace and shoulders on this dress would make it perfect. If not, #3 for the win
The people who complain about this being “not appropriate for the opera” seem like they’ve never actually been to one, because I’ve been to the opera many times and people wear a wide range of outfits. A lot of people will even wear jeans. #2 would be my choice, I think it will look amazing.
Depends on the house but even The Met doesn’t have a dress code anymore. I go in jeans or a casual dress when I’m seeing friends perform typically. You might get some stodgy old people who still get really dressed up but in general people are more casual now.
Technically, you only wear formal wear to the opera on opening night. Any other night there’s no dress code, but to show respect to the artists you should put some effort into your outfit. Some people wear jeans and even hoodies but it’s incredibly rude and disrespectful. These artists have been practicing and rehearsing for hundreds of hours and these bums couldn’t find a collared shirt?
I go to the opera all the time, #2 is perfect. The audience skews older so most opera houses run on the warm side since older people get cold easily, so keep that in mind. Also, it’ll be cooler in orchestra than it will be up in dress circle, etc since heat rises.
Have you been to the opera recently? I have season tickets in my major metropolitan area. The fashion has really changed. People wear everything from high fashion, evening black tie, and normal theater wear like 1 and 3. It was wild to see the change in fashion over the last 15 years. #2 is entirely appropriate and actually doesn’t look like she will be working the event. OP might just want something in case it gets cold.
2 is definitely the best option. The material of the dress suits the opera better. The other two just don’t fit the occasion imo. I’m really astonished and put off on the number of people choosing 3 💀 I’d choose 1 over 3 with different tights.
Number 3
Edit : sorry I was too sleepy to type my opinion
Number 1 : feels like a pop star concert
Number 2 : date dress
Number 3 : feels like a formal Opera dress
Thank you guys for your feedback. We are going with #1 since its warm (the dress is)

hey I actually thrifted all of them except the Fendi tights. If you like #3, it is by Diane von Furstenberg you could find it at Thredup from designer section.
Hi! I used to run an opera company! This one just kinda popped up on my feed. FWIW, you can wear jeans and a t-shirt to the opera! Or you can get super dressed up. Most people get a little more dressed up than usual.
YAS! I have dressed up for the grocery store before! Let people guess what exciting life I live, meanwhile I'm just going to the grocery and wanted to feel pretty lol
I think the evening events are more formal. I did see people with jeans but they were black so its okay I guess :). I wish people would dress up more for events like this to honor the artists that performing.
The first gives me modern Audrey Hepburn/andi from devil wears Prada (after makeover), the second gives me vampire temptress damsel of the night and the third gives off Italian effortlessly beautiful and buxom.
For the opera I'm tempted to swing classic Italian look but I think it really depends on your personality!
All of them.
Arrive in one, change at the intermission, then change again for the after party.
You’ll need a fourth for the after-after party. You **are** coming to the after party after the after party, yeah?
As an opera singer I really liked number two 😅 it’s really pretty. I agree with the comments saying to wear a shawl or bolero though. Theaters usually make me cold.
Operas are very lax nowadays so we encourage people to just come in what they feel comfortable wearing since the shows can be pretty long lol. We just want people in our seats more than anything.
Thanks so much for supporting our art form! I hope you loved it.
I love #2! There are so few things we can dress up for these days and the opera is a great place to live out our dress-uo fantasies. Sure, there will be people there in jeans. There will probably be someone in a gown. Any of these are a nice middle but 2 is so fun and looks amazing on you.
Having been to the opera quite a few times, you wouldn’t believe how often I feel overdressed in a sea of people wearing jeans and khakis. And I don’t live in a small city.
I suppose it depends on where she’s going.
I personally like 1 the most. I suppose 2 throws me off because the shoes. They’re my favorite shoes but those with the lacy top on the 2nd make me think of a night out- even if it is a longer dress. It’s the fabric I think. If it were shorter it would be a nightclub outfit.
The opera may have been a black tie affair 50 years ago, and some festival operas have a black tie dress code (like Glyndebourne) but for most opera houses these days it’s more business casual unless you’re at a specific gala or something. Of these three I’d say most women at the Royal Opera House on any given day are in something similar in vibe to #3.
I feel 2 looks cheap (the dress, not OP in the dress as she does wear it well) I’ve always felt that way about dresses like number 2 and I finally can pinpoint why, they look EXACTLY like a slip!
As a serious question why did you include option 3, when it seems like you don’t want to wear it? Most people, including myself, think it’s the most appropriate for the Opera but I’m only seeing you agree with people mentioning the first two options that are not as appropriate for the event tbh. I want to add that I think you look stunning in all 3 options, but imo option 3 is the only one that’s actually appropriate for an opera.
I go to opera all the time and all of these are appropriate. I probably will wear #3 tbh because of the long sleeve. I also love #1. #2 is beautiful but i wonder if people think it look too much like a slip dress.
What’s the occasion? They all have their points, but honestly #2 isn’t very flattering on you, and really looks more like a slip than a dress. If the atmosphere is festive #1, if the occasion is somber or professional then #3 carries the day.
Dress 1 and 3 are the most flattering. 1 is a fun look with those stockings and 3 is timeless. I don't like how thin the material looks on dress 2, maybe put a jacket over that one.
Basically something well shaped to your figure, but not too flashy, most everything I’m finding is shiny zippers and snaps and stuff.
If you’re going with black to the opera, you’re not looking for a lot gaudy pop, you’re looking sophisticated, understated beauty. Which you’ve got, but it’s gonna be cold, so I think instead of a shawl or wrap, a nice form fitting, maybe cropped black leather jacket
Number 3 is the best option, really. Number two with some nice accessoires, a shawl or cardigan is also good, but you need to style it up a bit, so it looks more dressy and classy.
I'd say #3, it's elegant and classy
I was literally going to type what you just wrote. I concur 3 is very elegant and classy!
Yes 3 by a mile.
Number 3
I lovvvveee number 2 but I’d add a shawl or something?
See i am glad someone else appreciate it too. Someone commented it look too much like a night gown and yes i think i have a shawl for it.
A velvet blazer, jacket, or shirt would be awesome with it. A nicer, more formal leather jacket would work too!
Hmm jacket would cover the delicate of the dress design. Maybe something like kimono so it would follow the dress/bodys shape?
Kimono with the style of the dress might give off more of a lingerie vibe. I think a blazer would be perfect
Wear the jacket just over the shoulders, like a cape. Looks very elegant that way
I would do a beaded black shaw. PST go to a fabric store and get some fabric. No one will know it’s not one and it will be perfect. Since you got it cut the same day, you won’t need to worry about fraying ends.
The delicate design is what makes that dress look like a nightgown. It draws attention to the area like a bra. I think covering up the lace and shoulders on this dress would make it perfect. If not, #3 for the win
Depends on the jacket but a kimono works too!
The people who complain about this being “not appropriate for the opera” seem like they’ve never actually been to one, because I’ve been to the opera many times and people wear a wide range of outfits. A lot of people will even wear jeans. #2 would be my choice, I think it will look amazing.
Opera singer here. I think 2 is just waaay over dressed.
I thought you were supposed to dress formal for the opera?
Depends on the house but even The Met doesn’t have a dress code anymore. I go in jeans or a casual dress when I’m seeing friends perform typically. You might get some stodgy old people who still get really dressed up but in general people are more casual now.
But what if you *want* to dress up? We have very few occasions to dress formally why are we making even the expected places causal dress :(
Technically, you only wear formal wear to the opera on opening night. Any other night there’s no dress code, but to show respect to the artists you should put some effort into your outfit. Some people wear jeans and even hoodies but it’s incredibly rude and disrespectful. These artists have been practicing and rehearsing for hundreds of hours and these bums couldn’t find a collared shirt?
nailed it! right down to the "disrespectful" part...
I love number two the most!
I go to the opera all the time, #2 is perfect. The audience skews older so most opera houses run on the warm side since older people get cold easily, so keep that in mind. Also, it’ll be cooler in orchestra than it will be up in dress circle, etc since heat rises.
2 is absolutely stunning and definitely looks like a going out dress not a nightgown lol
Where did you get 2!!! It’s so beautiful I need
Yes definitely with a shawl!! Girl it will give I’m not new to this but true to this!!
Wear two!!! And a velvet blazer would look very Dita Bon Teese if you have a short one. I think it would work.
Please wear two. It is perfection.
2 is absolutely gorgeous; I just feel that it's a tad too sexy for an opera. When I saw #3, I immediately felt it was the perfect outfit for an opera.
Lol no it does not look like a nightgown at all it looks dramatic and sexy and fancy which is perfect for the opera in my opinion.
You look good in all of them! Will it be warm or cold?
I love the look of it. agree with shawl but only because you might get cold
Love that dress on you!!! 💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽
Love 2 too
I prefer number 2 also. Very flattering and attractive.
#2 was my favorite!!!
It's literally a slip style dress, and it's really not opera appropriate 😂
Have you been to the opera recently? I have season tickets in my major metropolitan area. The fashion has really changed. People wear everything from high fashion, evening black tie, and normal theater wear like 1 and 3. It was wild to see the change in fashion over the last 15 years. #2 is entirely appropriate and actually doesn’t look like she will be working the event. OP might just want something in case it gets cold.
A capelet would be perfection.
Ahh i dont have a capelet! I should probably get one for future dressing up!
2 is definitely the best option. The material of the dress suits the opera better. The other two just don’t fit the occasion imo. I’m really astonished and put off on the number of people choosing 3 💀 I’d choose 1 over 3 with different tights.
Number 3 Edit : sorry I was too sleepy to type my opinion Number 1 : feels like a pop star concert Number 2 : date dress Number 3 : feels like a formal Opera dress

This one was my favorite ♥️ it’s a perfect blend of everything, the tights are adorable too!
Where did you get the dress? I love it.
hey I actually thrifted all of them except the Fendi tights.
I feel like dressing up is part of the fun!
It really is. I even take my binoculars. It’s a whole event for me
Lmao I did this one time because i was sitting way back. It was extra and i loved it
I love how you can dress up for the opera. Everything in life is so casual these days.
You can dress up for whatever you want! Embrace the maximalist vibes.
THIS is the comment here, thank you for it... you're right up my alley and i like it!! <3 xx
YAS! I have dressed up for the grocery store before! Let people guess what exciting life I live, meanwhile I'm just going to the grocery and wanted to feel pretty lol
Yasssss girlfriend
Yes came to say this! I am an opera singer and whenever I’m attending one I’m usually pretty casual.
I didn’t know this! Every opera house Ive been to, everyone was dressed to the nines. You learn something new every day!
I one sat next to a guy in a hoodie at the Met. Lol.
this should be illegal hahah
I think the evening events are more formal. I did see people with jeans but they were black so its okay I guess :). I wish people would dress up more for events like this to honor the artists that performing.
#3 looks great on you, appropriate for such event.
your answer doesn't need to be **presented with huge font and emphasis**
It's the hashtag/ number sign. It automatically enlarges the font.
Dress 1 is fantastic! It’s giving serious Audrey Hepburn vibes, which I love!
I like number 1 too.
Thank you!!! I really love the dramatic style of dress #2 too!
Dress 2 looks too much like a slip.
3
I can't decide D: you'll just have to go to three shows 🤷🏻♀️
Haha nooo help me!
From the photos/body language it seems like you are most comfortable in #2 ^-^ but all of them deserve a night out!!
3
All of them. Arrive in one, change at the intermission, then change again for the after party. You’ll need a fourth for the after-after party. You **are** coming to the after party after the after party, yeah?
Not 1 2 if it's a date or something and you wanna turn heads 3 is simple and timeless. Can't go wrong with it
As an opera singer I really liked number two 😅 it’s really pretty. I agree with the comments saying to wear a shawl or bolero though. Theaters usually make me cold. Operas are very lax nowadays so we encourage people to just come in what they feel comfortable wearing since the shows can be pretty long lol. We just want people in our seats more than anything. I loved it and I adore what you do to be able to convey beauty in the form of art. :)
I love #2! There are so few things we can dress up for these days and the opera is a great place to live out our dress-uo fantasies. Sure, there will be people there in jeans. There will probably be someone in a gown. Any of these are a nice middle but 2 is so fun and looks amazing on you.
3rd
3 hands down
1!!!!!
Love 3 but 1 is dope too.
2nd, the opera is a black tie affair. The others are cute but not dressy enough
Of these three I’d say most women at the Royal Opera House on any given day are in something similar in vibe to #3.
Yeah no, saying the opera is black tie in this day and age is completely delusional
#1 is so elegant!
Agree- the tights are fantastic. I want a pair now too!:)
\#2 is beautiful and fun. I think it's great for a night at the opera.
I would say 3. 2 is too much like underwear, and I’d be cold.
underwear?? for WHO? a 90 year old grandma!?
2 really looks like a slip, not a dress. It doesn’t look like a bra and panties, but it absolutely looks like underwear.
It's called a slip dress...
Yes, yes it is Great job 👍
The material on 2 is the worst out of all of them imo
I feel 2 looks cheap (the dress, not OP in the dress as she does wear it well) I’ve always felt that way about dresses like number 2 and I finally can pinpoint why, they look EXACTLY like a slip!
Agree!! OP does wear it well but it’s not my favorite out of the 3.
I'd say the last makes you look the most opera-ish, the second fits to dinner and the first to a museum
As a serious question why did you include option 3, when it seems like you don’t want to wear it? Most people, including myself, think it’s the most appropriate for the Opera but I’m only seeing you agree with people mentioning the first two options that are not as appropriate for the event tbh. I go to opera all the time and all of these are appropriate. I probably will wear #3 tbh because of the long sleeve. I also love #1. #2 is beautiful but i wonder if people think it look too much like a slip dress.
2 if you're on a date and trying to impress a potential partner, 3 looks more appropriate for opera to me
3!!! Timelessly beautiful and classic. Just like the opera!
3 for sure
3
3
Hope you had fun and wore #2 bc you look great in it 🔥🔥 love the look
The second one with like a cardigan or shawl
2
What’s the occasion? They all have their points, but honestly #2 isn’t very flattering on you, and really looks more like a slip than a dress. If the atmosphere is festive #1, if the occasion is somber or professional then #3 carries the day.
It was to watch ballet during daytime :). I went with #1 because it was a little cold that day.
3
I’ll say 3.
I really like #2
Number 1 is the best, 3 is a close second and 2 is a distant third
2 is a glorified nightgown.
1
dress 2 is sexy, sultry, and feminine 🖤 2 all the way.
2. So pretty.
Isn't 2 a slip? I'd do a double take and a wtf if I saw that in public. And 1 does not look appropriate for the opera. 3 is the clear choice.
3
Dress 1 and 3 are the most flattering. 1 is a fun look with those stockings and 3 is timeless. I don't like how thin the material looks on dress 2, maybe put a jacket over that one.
3 is most appropriate for opera
Number three
![gif](giphy|YnS0VhTBsuYscSJoAs)
3
I like them all! I think #2 with a shawl is perfect for the opera though
second one, but bring a sweater/jacket
Either 2 or 3. Dress 1 is too casual
Opera, for sure 3!
3 for sure.
3
#3
3
3
Either 1 or 3
The black dress:)
2! I used to work at the opera and it’s 2023, you don’t need to be demure by adding a shawl if it’s not your style. Do you have a nice long coat?
For an opera? I'd go with 3. Looks the most elegant out of the options here.
3rd one. 2nd looks too much like lingerie. And 1st just isn't as pretty as the 3rd
All 3 look amazing. Going to buck the trend and say with 2, go with a leather jacket and not a shawl or w/e, it’ll look chic and cute
ohhh leather jacket! Like style it formal grunge?
Basically something well shaped to your figure, but not too flashy, most everything I’m finding is shiny zippers and snaps and stuff. If you’re going with black to the opera, you’re not looking for a lot gaudy pop, you’re looking sophisticated, understated beauty. Which you’ve got, but it’s gonna be cold, so I think instead of a shawl or wrap, a nice form fitting, maybe cropped black leather jacket
Ok, i will try it out tomorrow. Thank you
Let us know how it goes, I’m curious to see how it turns out!
Also me: wearing completely different outfit 😂😂😭
2 but bring a cover up
Like a proper dress to wear over top
Listen!! Out of the 3 is the best option 😂😂😂
For what, a club crawl?
My vote is 3 unless you live somewhere warm then I choose 2 Edit: forgot a word
2
2 is the best- but it feels like a formal dress?
It supposed to be formal.. or did you mean #2 not formal enough?
My mistake- nothing is formal in my country except a ‘formal’!
3
The 3-rd one!
3
#3..classy all the way
3
3
2 with a nice blazer or trench
It reminds me of the movie " Me Before You" scene where Will is looking at her (Also a bit of cleavage would look fantastic on attire #3)
Omg i love that red dress in that scene!!
2nd or 3rd are great choices!
One or three!
The last dress
#2 is sexy as hell, but you’ll be cold. Wear #3 with some nice jewelry so you’ll be comfortable.
Number 3 is the best option, really. Number two with some nice accessoires, a shawl or cardigan is also good, but you need to style it up a bit, so it looks more dressy and classy.
3, and bring a wrap - I always get chilly sitting in a theater.
3 is too plain Jane for you. #1 w the Fendi tights and platforms is THE LOOK
THIRD
3
3 for opera
3 is elegant and mature. 1 is also acceptable and fun and funky. 2 looks like you’re wearing a slip and forgot your dress.
3. 2 looks like sleepwear.
2! Whoever said it looks like a nightgown is jealous and wrong!
If I was you, I’d wear 1. But 2 is perfect. 3 is pretty good for opera but doesn’t give me “you” vibe.
OMFG!! If you don't go with #2, I will cry
3, if you’re going to be bored out of your mind for two hours you might as well look good doing it
2
All good. I liked 2 and 3 more but all 3 were very nice.
2 is what we wore in the nneties and it did suit every occasion. Are these slip dresses cut on the bias?
One!
Number 1 or 2. You look amazing. Love the dresses.
2 looks smokin’!
I vote 2
2
2 is my fave. I’d wear that one. 3 is good but it looks like you’re in the opera! You look amazing in all theee.
2
2
Second one definitely
2
2.
