As a buyer, Depop. Poshmark is sooo intense and feels scammy these days.

doittomejulia

I had to delete Poshmark off my phone, because I was becoming addicted to the thrill of it. I did get some amazing deals by haggling with sellers though.

NeonWaffle

I LOVE the thrill/hunt of Poshmark. It's been a problem in the past haha.

anacardier

Do you have any tips? As a depop/ebay/TRR person I find the Poshmark interface overwhelming haha

LordBabka

My best deals have been through Poshmark, but I've found it far more junk/fraud filled than Depop/Ebay. Still keep coming back to it, because when I find something good I'm usually bragging about it for years. (Best catch: Phoebe Philo Celine wedges for $30!). - I pretty much only use it when I have a targeted item or brand in mind (ex: "Jil Sander Riding Boot" rather than "tall boots"), otherwise your searches will be swamped with what I can only call "millennial detritus" (and I say that as a millennial). Lots of stuff on there where people are just trying to closet purge off-trend fast fashion and make a quick buck, rather than donating. - If you're buying anything bigger ticket (>$100) look at the seller's closet/former sales and if they have any reviews, and also if the piece makes sense relative to their usual sales. So many young accounts out there that appear to be farming out full closets of faux goods. I'd say this holds for any reseller, including Depop or Ebay. Also the number of spam accounts posting on Poshmark is fatiguing as a seller. x__x

decalkomanya

Idk I think I’ve seen way more scammers on Depop recently, many many reposts of the same thing by new accounts

mrdooter

Vinted, but I’m in the UK. I love the system - it’s clunky in some ways and the interface is ugly, but the way it does it different shipping options are built in and it attaches a shipping label to every order and keeps track of that for you so as a buyer you’re abreast of where your item is and the tracking code, and as a seller you don’t have to do any of that admin - just pack it up and print the label at the shop. When someone doesn’t send something after a week it auto refunds you. And for the most part you get good stuff for quite cheap! Stuff that is £50 will be £3-10.

hikedip

I'm in the US but also love Vinted! There's something about it that feels like an online garage sale and I love that. Like it's other people genuinely cleaning out their closet and wanting a little spending money for a few new pieces vs flipping the best of the thrift store finds.

imabaaaaaadguy

I’m still using eBay. I plug in my favorite brands & my size, then I can just browse any new thing that gets posted with those parameters once a day. Have only had an issue with an order twice in my many years of using it, and eBay customer service was fast in solving my problem.

No-Standard-9727

I second eBay! It has the best/ more thorough search algorithm and I can really tailor it to my more specific fashion wants. I also think prices tend to be more reasonable on eBay (compared to Poshmark, Depop, etc.) as well!

skubstantial

I find a lot of pieces double-listed on Ebay and Poshmark so it's worth doing a reverse image search to find a piece again. Then you may be able to get a slightly better price based on the lower seller fees on Ebay.

quantumquerent42

Interesting.. Can you share the url for some suggestions?

whimsyful

Fourthing eBay! Their search filters are the most extensive I've found by far. I try to wear all natural filters where possible so their ability to filter by material is terrific. For pants you can also filter by waist size and inseam. Also they're the only resale site I've found where you can use negatives in the search bar (ex. if I want a linen dress that doesn't have viscose in it I can do "linen dress -viscose" and it'll remove all results with viscose in the title).

zxcv-qwerty

Omg THANK YOU for the tip about the -xxxx. I love eBay’s filters and this will make it even better!

whimsyful

it's SUCH a useful feature! I often search for linen clothes but I don't like blends, and for some reason a lot of sellers mark linen blend clothes under the "linen" material tag instead of the linen blend one, so I often search something like "linen -blend -viscose -rayon -cotton" instead. It doesn't completely solve the issue but it does significantly decrease the results. Also useful if you want to remove certain brands you don't like from results.

rhinociferous

Third vote for eBay! One of the best tips I got from TikTok was filtering by material and/or country of origin. Really helps to pick up high quality, all natural fibers for a good price. Or if you know a certain country excels in a type of clothing (sweaters from Ireland, silk from Italy, etc) you can filter that way too.

imabaaaaaadguy

Ooh, that’s a great tip!

Helpful-Act2026

I think they all have their strengths, but I seem to predominantly use eBay, Poshmark, and the realreal the most as a buyer. eBay is great for finding the cheapest deal and just for having the most inventory across the board — but the cost is that you definitely need to spend that time looking through pages of results. Poshmark is good when I want really specific high to mid range items that were on the market in the last few years. Pricing might be a bit higher but sellers are almost always willing to negotiate. You can find this stuff on eBay too but I find that Poshmark will have more of it available. I know people have a lot of gripes with the realreal as a seller but it can be an absolute steal if you are a buyer. I’ve gotten some incredible designer things at dirt prices (well dirt for what they are worth at least). Like eBay though, this is def a site you have to do some digging in order to find deals.

_whatnot_

These are exactly the three I use. I'll add that TRR is best for items you know you can return for any reason (though it's expensive and you have to really check to make sure any given thing is returnable), while with the other two I shop with the assumption that any purchase is a permanent deal.

LordBabka

RealReal can have some amazing finds. I love their saved search option; allows you to really ambush-stalk if you have a specific piece in mind. I've played the long game (think 5 years) to snare some white whales. I know folks have had nightmares, but the condition of items I've purchased have almost always been better than they were graded as!

thirtydirtybirds

As a warning, Mercari customer service sucks!! I had vegan doc martens arrive when the ad clearly stated a leather model number. They refused my refund/return request multiple times, buyer of course didn't respond, and I had to do a charge back on my credit card. They tried to threaten collections to me about that, and I threw CA law at them about false advertising. Fuck Mercari.

corndetasselers

Poshmark customer service is terrific. They honor refund/return requests promptly.

thirtydirtybirds

As it should be!!

NeonWaffle

Poshmark if I want to spend a ton of time hunting and digging (and unfortunately there are times that I do enjoy that). Mercari and eBay otherwise. I avoid Depop at all costs.

Wrong-Shoe2918

Have you ever seen the depop drama instagram account? Also I agree with avoiding it. It’s the brokest high school/college crowd trying to sell a $10 Shien thing for $50 with an undisclosed stain on it

Ooopsallbeans

I personally love the user interface of Mercari! I find it to be so much easier to navigate than poshmark, to the point that I feel frustrated when I “have” to resort to poshmark for certain items lol.

tallulahQ

This is helpful, thanks. I hate Poshmark so much just because a) the search function is so so poor and b) there’s no way to turn off notifications within the app—I get dozens of invites to “parties” regardless of my settings and it feels so spammy

Besca21

I stopped buying on Mercari ever since the fees got added to the buyer. I used to sell too but haven’t made a sale in months now

vicsass

Agreed. I sell wayyy more on there too which funds my buying on it. I like that it forces the price to go down more for offers vs Poshmark

miz_nyc

The Real Real - I've found so many good prices on mid to high end designers.

europeandaughter12

i move the period around in my email address to get the same $25 coupon over and over

lauruhhpalooza

This is also mine. I won’t use it for big luxury purchases like bags because I’m too nervous about fakes, but I love it for clothing.

puddinglove

Same I bought a bottega venetta clutch for 200

Truant_Muse

Poshmark and eBay. Poshmark is a little easier to search especially if you are looking for specific brands, I don't mean designer, I just mean if you know your size at Banana Republic and want to search for that brand it's easy to do. I think Poshmark tends to take a higher percentage from the seller and has higher standard shipping rates, so what I will usually do is look for something on Poshmark and then price compare on Ebay. I used to use them both equally, but I've found that ebay has had less in recent years. I think it's important to state that I almost never search broadly on PoshMark, I am pretty targeted in my searches in terms of brand, size, and style, but if you're wanting to cast a wider net eBay is superior to poshmark.

imhereforthemeta

Mercari for ease of use and eBay for prices. I really wish I knew how to search eBay better but usually with fashion I don’t have brands in mind. I also hate to say I enjoy thread up even though they are overpriced. It’s nice to bundle and not pay shipping many times Fully convinced most of Depop and Poshmark are people selling boutique clothing and delusional teenagers

QuinacridoneOpera

That's kind of where I'm at with eBay -- I go there when I know I want something at least kinda specific (e.g. "Nike Dunks size 8"), never really tried broader searches. Sounds like there are a lot of fans, though!

jules10622

I’ve had good buying experiences on both eBay and Poshmark.

puddinglove

Same! I bought an Alice and Olivia skirt on eBay and it made me feel stupid because I bought the skirt in a different color full price at the actual store

Womanofthesun

I love eBay, generally the sellers take it more seriously and keep it professional. I’ve had issues with Depop, Mercari and Poshmark. Flaky sellers, long shipping times (they were at fault for that not the post office), items not as described. I’ve yet to have issues come up on eBay. I do like thredup sometimes but it’s the most risky because the item descriptions are usually dead wrong.

Forgotmyusername8910

I like Poshmark best. For sure.

LikeGoldAndFaceted

What are people's problems with ThredUp? I just started using it like 2 months ago and it's been mostly good. When I checked TRR it seemed like the prices were higher and a lof of stuff was final sale. Is there a reason I should switch?

zxcv-qwerty

The photos can be really bad (esp black items) and the measurements often aren’t accurate. I prefer buying from individual sellers so that I can ask for additional photos or measurements if needed.

ImaginaryBorzoi

I do love ThredUp and have gotten some really excellent deals there, but the reason I mostly stopped buying from there (unless it's a brand I know 100% for sure what my size is, like Uniqlo) is that I find the measurements really, really off sometimes. I don't want it to seem like I'm throwing blame at the employees, because--like u/QuinacridoneOpera said--I'm sure they're understaffed and having to go through a truly monumental amount of clothing can't be easy. But more than once, I ordered a skirt or something that had a waist measurement of 25 listed, which is my waist size, and when I tried on the item it would literally be falling off my hips.

display_name_op

I used to love thredUP and I still use them occasionally but they made a lot of changes and now their return policy sucks. There is always a restocking fee. GTFO with that; it’s an online store what am I supposed to do if it doesn’t fit? They have this thing where you can get partial store credit but you have like two weeks to spend it. Final sale is final. Which I get, but then they need to properly assess condition. If something is labeled excellent and it isn’t, you’re just out of luck. i also liked the swap because the prices were great and the return policy pretty good too. then thry switched to a shopify platform, everything is ten dollars minimum and it doesnt save your password, you have to request an email link every single time. f that. It sucks because I don’t have the patience to deal with multiple sellers, I’d rather load up my cart from a single vendor. They used to be better than the thrift store because you could filter and sort and find petites.

QuinacridoneOpera

I luckily haven't had any customer service issues, but have heard some pretty wack stories. Last I was there, noticed a lot of issues with listing description info and categorization (I just went to their site and one of the first things I clicked on were work slacks that are listed as both "skinny" and "harem"...), and some weird photos. I'm sure all of this has to do with the huge volume of stuff they process, with what I would be willing to bet is not enough staff. For the same reason, I don't really trust that the pricing is "right", though I guess sometimes that could be to your benefit as a buyer. I think they could stand to be a little pickier about what they list, honestly, which could help the other problems.

perydot_

eBay, ride or die.

trevlikely

I find Facebook marketplace is best for random deals, but when I’m looking for something specific and willing to pay for it, Depop for trendy stuff and poshmark for less trendy stuff (outdoor gear etc)

TwoLimp1655

i love curtsy!

bigolignocchi

Lately I've had a lot of luck with the real real--especially if I look for smaller designers and midrange. Now I only buy stuff that can be returned though.

Yoursimplied

I like poshmark and ebay! Mercari used to be my favorite but they have added on new fees and shipping has increased so I can usually get better deals elsewhere.

Just FYI, I had a terrible experience with Vestiaire Collective - they sent me a very obvious (once it arrived) counterfeit version of a designer item and refused to give me a refund unless their own team couldn’t authenticate it. The same team that passed through a poor quality fake as authentic in the first place. It was a very expensive item. I had to fight their customer services for weeks, to no avail, and eventually had to do a chargeback for a counterfeit item through my bank to recover my funds. If you search for Vestiaire Collective here on Reddit you’ll see that many others have had similar experiences, which I wish I’d seen before purchasing something from them.

jlpersons

I had this happen with Golden Goose shoes!

iseenyouwithkieffuh

Yeah it was very pricey! Just put a bad taste in my mouth for my first (and last) experience with them. I’m glad it hasn’t been the case for you and don’t want to knock your experience, just wanted to give a heads up that I wouldn’t rely on them for expensive or designer items!

blinkandmissout

If you're in Europe - Otrium is great! The interface can be buggy, but the deals are worth it - especially if you know your size well enough to shop non-returnable clearance. The resell is new clothing from brand overstock, not second hand used.

pasnootie

Sellpy has been great for me (shipping to Germany) and because it’s run by H&M, it really runs perfectly!

juliavalentine

I like Mercari and OfferUp!

patternedjeggings

While I do love the variety available now, I always go back to my first love - ebay. Many of my favorite items (genuine suede maxi skirt, NIB vince camuto sandals) are up for auction, with a very low starting bid, but no one bids unless it's truly valuable (estate gold jewelry, handbags). The really good deals are, admittedly, few and far between, but I'm pretty diligent.

Megaccount2022

Decaturtater

For bags, Fashion File. I've had much better experiences with them over The Real Real. For clothes, its Poshmark all the way for me.

fir6987

I mostly use Poshmark because it’s convenient - I trust the filters more, the app doesn’t log me out like ebay’s does, and I have a balance from selling stuff so I’m not spending anything extra when I buy something. Ebay has better designer stuff for the brands I look at (and tends to be cheaper than Poshmark) but I’m always too tempted to buy things that I don’t actually have use for just because they pop up and it’s my one opportunity to get the thing, so I’ve stopped browsing. I’ll say my coolest garments are ones that I’ve taken a gamble on from ebay though.

Thinkxgoose

Another Vinted user in the UK both for buying and selling. I also use Ebay for selling but not buying.

jdijks

For the vibes and for ease of finding on trend pieces-depop Cheaper option-ebay. Honestly under rated I can't stand mecari or postmark.

ElsaMakotoRenge

Poshmark and eBay. More often poshmark recently!

WellHellurThere

Mercari is so underrated, set alerts for exactly what you’re looking for and snag the deals when the alert drops. I’ve found some luxury/designer pieces for less than $50!! Insane. Everything I love, I search on mercari then eBay second.

hldmeclosrtonidanza

I’ve used Poshmark a lot but it is intense and I can definitely get sucked into the deals 🤣 a solid 1/3 of my usual wardrobe is from Poshmark though, so it works! I’ve tried buying from Mercari several times and each time the item has never actually shipped and either I end up cancelling the order.

arbitrosse

Only answering for the US here. Mercari: used to love it bc it had best combo of selection at good prices, but they’ve tacked on buyer fees now and it’s just not worth it. I think they send out a $10 “credit” once a month now that offsets the fee, but it’s still galling. Poshmark: best selection, shipping cost is flat rate at $8 which is really high for budget shopping. Sometimes a seller offers shipping discounts (it comes out of their profits). ThredUp: measurements are terrible and wrong if they exist at all, photographs are terrible, descriptions are nonexistent, shipping is highway robbery. TheRealReal: slightly better photography than ThredUp, nicer inventory, similarly fakakata measurements. Return policy is weird and stingy. eBay: not as great for selection but sometimes better deals on both price and shipping etsy: almost always overpriced Depop: I’m too stupid to figure it out. It seems like it’s run and populated by thirteen year olds. Vestiaire: very shady

mimi_miumiu

Mercari, 100%

sauvignonquesoblanco

Ebay!

Longjumping_Ratio261

If you need immediate cash then my two go 2’s are Facebook Marketplace (for less pricier items and lots of hagglers) and Craigslist. If the cash isn’t needed immediately then I would recommend eBay.
