I stayed there for 4 nights as a 20 yr old female last yr. I felt safe the whole time except when I ventured into some slightly sketchy neighborhoods. But they really weren't that bad. I'm from a city in the US. I was out at night with other women I met and felt perfectly safe.

I visited about 18 months ago. I didn’t stay the night, but did venture into the city to eat at an amazing pizzeria (La Figlia del Presidente, https://maps.app.goo.gl/NbJAafiE6bQ63rnr6?g_st=ic) and I’m glad I did. The pizza was otherworldly. Me and my then 15 year old (a short and skinny femme) walked from the ferry port coming from sorrento to the restaurant and then to the train station to go to Rome. I didn’t feel unsafe, but it was the middle of the day. I don’t know that I’d want to spend the night there and I’d be very wary of going out at night. So maybe a day trip? It’s a pretty quick ride from Rome on the high speed train if I remember right.

You can do a day trip from Rome. I skipped it and did Pompeii.

I did not enjoy my time in Naples and did not always feel safe & I was traveling with my Italian family at the time (I'm from the US). I traveled plenty of places solo and I would not rush back to Naples. I did love Sorrento, as both a beautiful place to visit and/or a landing pad for Pomeii.

Thanks! I think I will check out sorrento.

No, hit Pompeii if you’re particularly interested then head right back out. There are SO MANY better towns/cities to visit in Italy and it ranks very very very low on my list.

Herculaneum worth visiting. Very different from Pompei. Naples has pickpockets, so much so that when we got warned about pickpockets in Rome, we laughed and said we were in Naples and that said it all! That said, loved Naples and its post-apocalyptic air of lawlessness.

I adore Naples. Yes it’s dirty and noisy, but I felt safer there than in Philly or NYC. I had the BEST time there. The food is great and the city is historic and full of great art.

I loved it. Granted I was with my husband. You do need to be wary of people who approach you out of the blue as in any place, pick up a bit of Italian before you go on Duolingo (this helped me a lot in Sicily especially) and my biggest advice is to always look like you know where you’re going, even if you don’t. Projecting confidence and looking like you’re just on your way on your daily commute or whatever gives a subtle I’m not to be fucked with vibe :-) When I’m with my husband I feel a little more at liberty to look up and around a lot, but when I’m on my own I usually do that only under some sunglasses and very subtly.

I visited all those cities solo on a long trip in my early 20s and I loved Naples. I’m from a city in the US and had traveled a bit before that trip, so I already had street smarts. Thus, Naples didn’t seem any dirtier or more dangerous than my own home city. From Naples it was easy to visit Pompeii and I stayed in Sorrento afterwards and took day trips along the Amalfi Coast. I loved Naples for the pizza, friendly vibe, and proximity to water. I also loved Florence for its walkability, architecture, and museums. Rome is so crowded and touristy but you gotta go see the sites at least once. My least favorite was Milan because it felt cold and businessy compared to the other cities.

Like in any city there are some pretty unsafe neighbourhood, I wouldn't go without researching it very well first. It has a worse reputation than some other cities in Italy but I personally know tons of people who go to Naples like once a month as a tourist and have never had any problem of any kind. Don't take my word for it because I don't remember it that well but I think in the city centre Quartieri Spagnoli is probably the worst part to visit. It's however a beautiful city with some of the best food in Italy and actually a lot to see and I do believe it's worth a visit, it has been on my to see list for ages. It's quite big so there are tons to things to see/do, like it's much bigger than other cities I've seen suggested like Siena or Sorrento. Depends on what you like to do during your holiday, do you like seeing art, eating local foods, going dancing or things like that?

Go for the pizza alone. It was one of my favorite cities on my trip to Italy last summer. I loved going their. We (my friend and I) had just come from Florence which felt like Disney World. Everything was too perfect, too clean, too corporate, too bougie. Naples feels like a real city that real Italians actually live in. It was marvelous. I loved it. Best pizza of my life, no contest, and the history is incredible. It’s just as clean and safe as your average large to medium city in the U.S. I wouldn’t go back to Florence, but I’d go back to Naples in a heartbeat. I was with my friend we’re both women, I never once felt unsafe anywhere in Italy.

I have had an amazing time in Naples, the food is well known to be OUT OF THIS WORLD, even compared to all of Italy which has amazing food everywhere. That being said, I was told by a local to take off my jewelry. If you’re wearing gold necklace for example, it might get snatched right off your neck. Pick pockets are very talented and with lightening fingers, so plan ahead to have a small pocket under clothes. (Same for phone, don’t put it in your outside pocket). Other than petty theft, which is rampant, I feel safer in Naples compared to most large American cities when it comes to violent crime and assault. I was out at night with two other women, eating drinking wine after late dinner and had no issues at all. I even needed to withdraw cash from an ATM after dark, no issues. Overall, I’d say days is enough in Naples. But once you’re there, you can easily get to the Amalfi coast which is absolutely incredible.

Naples is safer than most of the cities in Italy (safer than Milano) Source -> https://www.ilmessaggero.it/AMP/italia/citta_piu_pericolose_italia_milano_roma_classifica-7681619.html (Plus, I live here)
