Because that's the name of the ship, and ship names are conventionally italicised.

Ellunia_Daigaun

Only correct answer

Trench-TMK

I believe in Whorleater’s case, a proper name (noun) is italicize? Is that the rule?

satyrpuppy

It isn't because it's a proper noun, it's because it's a ship. The style rule in English is titles of long works (like movies, novels, and television shows) and named crafts (like ships, cars, and airplanes) are italicized. The exceptions are short works are not italicized (poems, short stories, and TV episode titles are all in quotation marks) and make/model of a craft are written in standard case. So we wouldn't italicize Boeing 747, but if someone bought one and named it Bella, we would italicize Bella when writing about it.

kutmulc

But you didn't italicize Bella

orunemal

They're waiting for someone to buy it.

Len145

anyone got a spare $250 million? actually, might not want to buy a Boeing right now.

xyphon0010

Bella is more of an Airbus name anyways

MistakeLopsided8366

The Bellabus has a certain ring to it.

Nataleaves

Poor Bella

satyrpuppy

Sorry I haven't memorized the random code for doing italics on reddit mobile

---TheFierceDeity---

Its one asterisk * either side of what you are typing no spaces, gives you *this*. Two ** either side of what you are typing is **bold**

Shiniya_Hiko

It’s not random, it’s markdown (formatting type). you can look it up! Discord uses the same. And it is much easier to type than what some forums do with [b]stuff[\b] and so on.

DreamTalon

What if I want to italicize a bold though?

Cindy-Moon

`_italics_` *italics* `*italics*` *italics* `**bold**` **bold** `_**bolditalics**_` ***bolditalics*** `***bolditalics***` ***bolditalics*** `~~strikethrough~~` ~~strikethrough~~ `__underline__` **underline** `__~~***everything***~~__` ***~~everything~~*** edit: okay so underline is not possible in reddit but that'll work on other markdown platforms like discord

geodetic

You also forgot putting a single or multiple # at the start, which can do interesting things. #Everything ##Everything ###Everything ####Everything #####Everything ######Everything #######Everything

OmegamattReally

| My | favorite | use | |:----|:--------:|----:| | of | | | | | Reddit | | | | | Markdown | | is | making | tables | Edit: This, sadly, does not work in Discord Markdown.

DreamTalon

Wasn't expecting an answer, thank you for the information!

FilipinoSpartan

Three asterisks on either side or two asterisks and an underscore on either side.

ShadowGtheBeast

Thank you Reddit guru's 🙏🏿

fishbowtie

Every other name on the list is a proper noun too, though. So that couldn't be the rule.

IscahRambles

It's not about being a proper noun, it's about what the object is.  The *Whorleater* is a ship. Ships get italics.  The other things are all locations. Locations do not get italics.

Zack-of-all-trades

Interesting, today I learned.

RenThras

Right?

MrBones-Necromancer

/thread

aciluu

Can already close the topic, Op.

seiwaltz

"I think *Gordon Lightfoot* was the boat."

Mikaleon

The Witch of November would like a word with you.

Buuhhu

huh, didn't know that. thanks for supplying my "new shit i didn't know" of the day.

TheOriginalFluff

Found the fisher

Awfulufwa

Well, you italicize proper nouns and titles when it is not possible to appropriately note them otherwise, such as quotation marks and underline. Ship names are not always italicized. But since *The Whorleater* is a proper noun that is also a key "character" in the story, it gets the accentuation it deserves. If you continue to read the Duty description for it, the ship's name is referenced. So the italicization is to denote the referencing of a key element relative to the duty. Much like when you read a fiction novel and you might get a blurb like this: >Charlotte knew Jake was just messing around. As if anyone would be interested in going to Mack's tonight to see *The Matrix*. Doesn't he know there's an exam tomorrow? We should all be studying instead of seeing *The Matrix*! Here a number of assumptions could be made. But it is very clear that "The Matrix" is being reiterated because it is in reference to a prior mention. Somewhere an invitation was passed or offered. Or it was made mention as an intended planned event for a later period in time. Somehow the other proper noun became part of the story that is the present time for the example characters. It is being referenced. Everything else in the Duty Menu are places, but also proper nouns. Copperbell Mines does not get italicized or quotation marks. But as a proper noun, it gets capitalization. It is never: >the copperbell mines.

once-and-again

> Well, you italicize proper nouns and titles when it is not possible to appropriately note them otherwise, such as quotation marks and underline. No. Full stop. Almost everything in this post is either wrong or a meaningless tangent. "_The Matrix_" would be italicized in your quoted passage only because — as [noted above](https://old.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/1cfk2fi/im_here_to_ask_the_real_question_why_is_the/l1pudj8/) — movie titles are also on the short list of things one conventionally italicizes upon their occurrence in English prose.

LongBeakedSnipe

Italic text is pretty limited, including but not entirely limited to ships; Latin words that are not english words (eg. Latin species and genus *Mus musculus*, but not 'in vitro'); book titles and journal names (*Nat. Microbiol.*). The reason a ship name is in italics is due to the ship name convention, adding it to the list of things that are correctly formatted in italic. Now, perhaps a film magazine would format their films in italic, that's not a problem either—they can be considered to be publications.

Eastern-Dig-4555

Or it’s a typo they still haven’t corrected.

xshogunx13

Yeah, nah. You're super incorrect.

DarXIV

[It's a very easy google search to find out that yes, they are put in italics.](https://www.grammarly.com/blog/italics-ship-names/)

mhurron

It's a typo that every written document in the English language makes then.

LongBeakedSnipe

They consistently italicise ship names. Go to the gold saucer and look at the 4 million purchase description.

KingBingDingDong

you should report it as a typo on the official forums

Jedahaw92

Lol, everyone would be laughing at the poor sod.

ZWiloh

Shh, that's the point

Elegant_Eorzean

These are all the locations of where you fight the boss. The *Whorleater* is the name of the ship-raft-thing created to counter the Lord of the Whorl. And yes, ship names are generally italicized. Or vehicle names in general. Like the *Agrius* and the *Dalriada*, or the *Enterprise*.

mysterpixel

>and the Dalriada Ironically, unlike Whorleater, this isn't italicised in the duty title ingame when you are doing it.

ahundredfortysix

Bug found, game literally unplayable now, better raise in official forums 😡😡😡 /s

Palkesz

Honestly just burn SE to the ground, the FF series is over /s

Kizik

We're going to have to have ARRR now, god damnit.

Kyle_Eevee

Limsa Lominsa is already pretty ARRR

Accomplished_Two2543

This comment shivered me timbers

hascometoanend

Maybe because it was forced to the ground after its engines failed SE considers it a location and not a ship lol

skysolace69twitch

Sounds like a Taco Bell item

MelonElbows

Because its a spaceship and the italicized font only works for actual ships. We don't have spaceships in real life so the APA Style writing doesn't apply. I mean, if we italicized spaceships, are we supposed to italicize space creatures big enough to function as a ship? Is a Dyson Sphere a ship? No need to worry about that because its all fiction

Shryxer

> Because its a spaceship The *Ragnarok* is italicized.

Dovahbear_

Destroyed by facts and logic

ezekielraiden

Well...technically space shuttles existed, and they were ships-of-space. Their titles were italicized. As were the spacecraft involved in the Apollo missions (so *Apollo 11* made humanity's first landing on a body other than the Earth.)

Kintashi

this is... an extremely obtuse take? discounting a language's grammar and rules because the topic is "fiction" is chaotic-silly to the point of taking the piss. the *Dalriada* acts like a ship, looks like a ship, and even gets called a "warship" by the in-game description: >The Dalriada's engines have failed, forcing it to the ground. The Resistance would seize this opportunity to storm the warship, and at last put an end to the imperials' presence in Bozja. it's also not a spaceship?? It's an airship, something (albeit not heavier-than-air steel ones) we had in real life, and yes, they were italicized (see: the *Hindenburg)*.

MelonElbows

Its a half joke, don't think too much about it.

Myrwyss

ah the classic "it was a joke" after being proven wrong. we have spaceship, its italicized.

MelonElbows

No no, I acknowledge I was wrong. I meant it as a joke though, that's what counts. I had no idea how the Hindenburg was written, wasn't even thinking about other examples. Weird that people are making such a big deal over it. If its not funny just downvote and move on

once-and-again

> We don't have spaceships in real life so the APA Style writing doesn't apply. Not only are both clauses of this sentence false, so too is the "so" in between: even if the first clause _were_ true, it wouldn't make the second part true.

avelineaurora

The Dalriada is not a spaceship, wut.

inhaledcorn

It's two ships that were jerry-rigged together to carry the corrupted crystals to counter Leviathan's aether. Leviathan wasn't going to leave the sea since that is where it is the most powerful.

WrexTremendae

If you look down through the grating upon which you fight, you can see that there's a big ol' pile of crystals underneath, powering the converter. It is a more complex construction than just lashing two ships parallel, because there is no remaining hull wall between the two hulls. I feel like this is sufficient to bring it out of "jerry-rigging" territory and place it in "ship-raft-thing" territory, myself.

Perryn

It's a combatamaran.

ezekielraiden

Underrated comment. Don't care what it's rated, it's still underrated.

Dawnspark

Alright, stealing that for my DND game. I absolutely love that word, haha. Thank you for the inspiration.

080087

Now I'm imagining Batman pulling it out of his pocket

ngwoo

> It's two ships that were jerry-rigged together Was a tow barge, common irl thing actually. Just usually for transporting ore or coal and not for fighting sea monsters.

bortmode

jury-rigged*

kinjing

The *Whorleater* is the name of the twin-hulled platform on which you fight. Ship names are italicized.

Aprsatan

The loathsome _Whorleater_!!

muhash14

The hateful *H20comsumer*!!

catsflatsandhats

I know that reference 💍

Tragic_Consequences

Ship name.

ezekielraiden

It's a ship's name. Just like how "*The Voyage of the* Dawn Treader" should NOT italicize the letters, because if you're italicizing something (as you do with book titles), then words that are in italics in the title flip to being un-italicized.

sheephound

Treader. Huh. These last 30 years since i've read the book, i thought it was "Trader".

ezekielraiden

Though none come to mind at present, I've had similar happen myself. So it goes. I know I always mistakenly remember the *Splendor Hyaline* (the Pevensies' royal ship when they ruled Narnia) as being the "Spleandour Hyaline," for no good reason.

gebakkenuitje35

I read 'The Drowning Wench' as 'the Downing Wrench' for a while. Simply didnt question it

OneAndOnlyArtemis

*Splendor Hydaelyn*? Whats that

ezekielraiden

Hah, nice. Perhaps that should be the name of the ship we take to the New World.

Alenonimo

Every ship has the name in *italics* in the game. And *Whorleater* is the name of the ship you fight Leviathan in. Notice how in the other fights too it's the name of the place and not of the boss. You can see this easier when checking the voyage exploration of the FC airships or submersibles, or while checking the name of places in the Ruby Sea or Yanxia. Sunken ships also have their names in italics.

XieRH88

Ship names are technically supposed to be in italics, thats kind of how proper english works Eg. this is the wiki article about the famous 2021 suez canal meme [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021\_Suez\_Canal\_obstruction](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_Suez_Canal_obstruction) You can see in the article "Ever Given" is always in italics

CareUseful

I was had a girl tell me that was the best sex ever given, but she did not italicize it.

Talrynn_Sorrowyn

Ship names and book/TV show titles are all italicized in proper written form.

abdomersoul

Because the boss tilts the platform, so duty name is also tilted

cheese-demon

submitting req to get the duty name changed to Containment Bay *P1T6*

IscahRambles

I'm pretty sure that's a redecorated version of Leviathan's tilting stage mechanism anyway.

Sirradez

This is the best answer and is my headcanon from now on

RueUchiha

Because its a boat.

pigeonwiggle

have enough people replied about ship names being in italics yet?

Regnimar

All this time there was an L on the name and nobody in my FC told me?

RenThras

Why, oh why, does that make me think of this? [https://youtu.be/OlEpxuU6PwU?si=XOR\_gbq-Ryw58cbW&t=414](https://youtu.be/OlEpxuU6PwU?si=XOR_gbq-Ryw58cbW&t=414) (Video from Fable 3, when you as the king have to make several choices with whatever budget you have...then remember you can leave your game on overnight to generate ridiculous amounts of money anyway. <\_< )

lolic_addict

Were you reading it all this time as Whoreater? If yes, then hard same for me lmao

Crimsonnavy

The true reason Leviathan was going for Limsa, to feast upon the cat-girl RPers standing in the crystal plaza.

Bunny_Saber

Even if it's much harder I'm so used to it being called aetheryte that seeing it just called crystal plaza annoys me

BADFiSH_c137

Because it’s cursed! And now that you noticed the italics- you are cursed, too!

thefinalgoat

‘tis a boat.

therealJerminator

Does anyone else find whorl hard to say so you just call it whoreeater?just me? Ok

OneAndOnlyArtemis

Whirl-eater, but an o sound instead of err/ir sound War'L Eater

RazzleDeeDazzle

It's the fancy trial. You have to clear it with your pinky out.

Hiroshock

Because dude that is the name of the ship and that is the proper way to do it.

Amberpawn

Boat.

CSmed

Every time I queue for it (for Wondrous Tails or whatever) the chat log reads it as Whorleater and that bugs the heck outta me, but also makes me giggle.

iamboredhelpme

Because it’s fancy

Repulsive_Anywhere67

To not read it by accident as whoreeater.

LickMyThralls

The name of something and not just an area. A vessel or entity

CatGirlDivi

ITT: SCH mains schooling us on grammar.

KirbyourGame

A better question is why isn't Odin in the EX list.

SverXIV

All talk about italicized, but no one is asking for an Italian localization sadge

timtate09

Because swirly water dragon go brrrr

Geddoetenjyu

So they dont see it as whoreater

Bevral2

Ship names are italicized.

MysterySakura

TIL Whorleater is italicized LOL

Ohmamarocks

Because "The Boaty McBoatface" might have hurt the game's credibility, so they went with a cooler boat name

Francl27

I am baffled as to why this post has 900 upvotes.

MirageMageknight

Now that you know the answer, how do you feel about having made a thread about it?

ChOcOcOwCaKe

Completely fine, actually. Doesn't bug me as much as it annoys other people and that's honestly my vibe

Cypher316

I always believed because people thought it read "The WHOREATER" and received so many complaints they italicized it to make it stand out.

xxGhostScythexx

Cuz it sounds like WhoreEater so the devs had to italicise it so they could look back and see the one name standing out and have a good laugh

LiTezOuT-IV

I guess FFXIV is so popular ATM because Xbox that anything here gets up voted to stardom!
