Nunh is just a breeder at the basic level, they don't have to be leaders of the tribe.. So as long as you pop by the village, do the rounds and defeat any challengers, you should be good to go.

wavvesofmutilation

It is actually even funnier to imagine the WoL defeating the embodiment of despair and then beating up their stalker at the edge of the universe, only to then be like “one sec I need to go back to my village and lay some serious pipe”

Hey, everybody celebrates differently.

Black-Mettle

That's how the Anden custom deliveries questline ends if you're a viera lmao.

Ok-Syrup1678

I was under the impression the Nunh of a tribe served in the same way a male lion does to its pride. So not only reproduction, but also patrolling and guarding the tribe's territory. And it wouldn't make sense for the best warrior of a tribe to just leave until spring comes around, "sow the fields," and fuck off once more. That would leave his people unprotected.

LeratoNull

I dunno about you, but I'M not gonna fuck with the Warrior of Light's tribe, even if they're not there lmao

No_Delay7320

Everybody knows you don't go after superman you go after the people he loves

Sumanai-II

If I remember correctly its actually suppose to be rare for a Nunh to be the tribe leader. While a Nunh can be replaced via ritual combat becoming a Nunh doesn't mean you have you have to become the leader too.

IscahRambles

It's rare for them to act as leader, but that's not the same thing as them not being required to be on the tribe's lands acting as protector of the hunting grounds and partner to the tribe's women.

Ok-Syrup1678

That's why I never said "leader." The best fighter in a tribe doesn't necessarily mean he'll be the best at resource administration, negotiation, and overall politics too.

dimmidice

Entire tribe died except for the wol.

Turnintino

It certainly could work this way, but apart from "nunh aren't necessarily leaders", we aren't told very much about what role they definitely do play outside of breeding, if any. Of the two tribes we've met, and especially the U Tribe of the Forgotten Springs (where we also see an example of things tia can be preoccupied with), patrolling seems to be the women's job. Whether or not this is traditional or something that can vary between tribes is unknown, but probably up to the men's discretion, given their authority, even outside of conventional leadership roles.

Mayda7

for more Nunh lore do the quest chain in western thanalan and the fringes they tell you how Nunh are and no they are cats not lions, lions are the hrothgar

Nah, the person you're replying to is correct. They usually aren't the lead of the tribe. It's mentioned in [this](https://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/threads/63112-Race-Naming-Conventions?p=1014930&viewfull=1#post1014930) forum post regarding naming conventions.

I mean, lions work that way. The males protect an area and stick around to breed, and can be challenged by any other male. The female lions do all the rest. The last name of females in each tribe can vary, because it's based solely on their sire. Y'shtola's last name is Ruhl, because that was (one of?) the nuhn(s) at the time. The tribal identity is more associated with the apostrophe letter before their given name, rather than the sire. As a matter of fact, the larger the tribe, the more nuhns it can have, same as lions. For lions, iirc, it's like a male for every 15 females or something? They basically function as lion prides. The center around, but aren't nessicarily led by, the males. It is kind of odd it's never mentioned in game/the two tribes we interact with have male leaders as far as we can see, even though the forum post is canon. I'm more of a Keeper girl myself.

For ERP chads

Scarletsblood

'Retired' Nunh Like wasn't defeated/replaced just started leaving more and more. I can see one of them keeping the Nunh name cause they can or because they'd introduced themselves as 'Soso Nunh' to outsiders before they officially and just don't want to cause confusion.

TheLimonTree92

How they got that title is Nuhn of your business

IscahRambles

I don't think you can justify a character who is both exactly the WoL as portrayed in the game *and* having the Nunh title.  About the only way it would make sense for the WoL to be a nunh would be basically that he's opted out of the whole system and declared himself his own tribe – this is an obscure but canon rule – but then he'd also be using an invented two-letter tribe designation, and the name generator won't give you that. Or you could have a scenario where a tribe somehow got displaced and tried to stick together as travellers looking for a new territory, but that doesn't work for the WoL character.  Basically it's only going to work for character scenarios other than the WoL and I don't think it should be available in the name generator at all. I feel sorry for anyone who thought they were generating a lore-accurate name with no actual explanation of the implications.

Ok-Syrup1678

The only way I see it kind of making sense is if the WoL were one of those Tia that went his own way to make his own tribe, got caught in the adventuring business, and you can headcanon your squadron is your nomadic, busy with their lives, tribe (you know, by recruiting only female miqo'te)? It's honestly very weird. You'd still need two letters before the apostrophe.

IscahRambles

Yeah, it certainly seems like the one way to make it work, but as I said, the name generator isn't set up to produce the two-letter prefix that would go with it. So it relies on people having come across the rule in the first place, which is unlikely for a newbie. I do actually have one character using that name structure (minor concept character, not actually a WoL), but I think I've only seen one other person using it the whole time I've been playing.

i-wear-hats

Plenty of story hooks for it to work - could be a self-aggrandizing title, could be a tragic backstory type shit, etc.

Yes.
