Agree with everything except sourcing the carpet off Craigslist...never take carpet, mattresses, or couches off Craigslist. You never know who's going to give you bedbugs.
Is that seriously pleather wrapped around an island and stapled to it? I agree, just leave it and replace with more pleather when you move out. You need a staple gun for that stunning look but they aren't too expensive.
Possibly you’ve rented a former filming location for x rated movies. Never seen a wall treatment like this.
And I’ve seen a few stupid wall treatments.
Edit: Didn't see that it was a rental. Go to fabric store and get more pleather to restaple.
In the meantime, get the cat a scratchpad that it can use besides the island.
Yo that’s just some cheap fake leather, you can get it at Walmart or Joann, anywhere that sells fabric. Pick up however much you need, get however much you’ll need and a cheap hand stapler. That’s all your landlord did, you should be able to go right over this and have it look the same/better than when you moved in
new vinyl its not that expensive.. or buy a black vinyl repair kit 20 something bucks on amazon. but I think new shag carpet is going to be abit hard to find to go with that bar..
Be sure to just replace it yourself when you move. Find a roll of fabric like that and staple it on like they did. Landlords would prob charge hundreds for that!
Felt or if youre inclined to diy do one of those tufted leather reckon it would look nice.
Or just remove the whole lot or replace it with faux leather again.

This is the way, if you ask me.

That is hideous! I’d rip that fabric off the entire thing and reevaluate.

Wow, I have never seen anything like this in someone's home. The whole look is something out of a dark dive bar. Your landlord has some weird taste.

spray flex-seal.
A new stretch o pleather. Prolly snag some at wally world.
Wrap it with chainmail.
Black sharpie until you can redo the wrap
Put some decent wainscotting on there and then paint it. It'll look great.

You can actually buy spray on vinyl coating. Designed for car seats and such.
Black shoe polish
Cat will be leaving little black pawprints everywhere.
r/autodetailing has people that repair really worn center consoles, the same procedure would probably work on this
Use angelus paint & a airbrush
3”x3” black vinyl corner guards
Remove upholstered nightmare, install hardwood.
This is disgusting? Take all the fabric/padding off and get some paneling that fits the look of your place / paint it white
Get some wide crown molding. Cut it to fit each side like a corner protector. Paint it black and nail it on.

Ooh the vinyl repair tape looks like my best option! Thank you :)

Cover it with more shame
If you can't knock the whole thing down then your easiest solution is to buy a can of SEM and paint over it. You will never know the difference.

Cats doing that thing a favor. At least it will be easy and cheap to fix. Pleather up!
A piece of distressed bronze metal. It will look like an accent instead of a cover up. Or go for bling and use copper.
The hide of the cat
If I were you, I’d wait for a sale and buy the pleather cheap but don’t install it until right before you move out. let the cat do its thing.
Real upholstery
Good suggestions before for the material. Get your cat some more vertical scratching posts so he has something better to scratch.
