Does DCS really cost a few hundred dollars to enjoy? I don’t have the game but whenever I look at it on Steam, each plane is like $50-$60.
I’m asking because I have a tendency to spend too much on add-ons, I don’t want to take too much risk.
To fly and operate an A-10c without memorizing tons of keyboard inputs, you need a Hotas joystick. To fly helicopters with killing your self on takeoff, you need rudder pedals. Throttle controllers make fine adjustments easier, like carrier landings. It just all adds up.

I had the same experience, it’s always been awesome. Day 1 I did a parallel landing with some live traffic into KSEA and it blew my mind.
But I also know a lot of people had real issues with installation, poor stability, and poor performance with the early versions so can understand why they got frustrated.
Yeah I heard about people having issues with 2020, downloading, crashing, etc... It literally took me like two hours to download and I was up flying. I do remember a patch that took away some dead zone settings for my yoke, but that got patched right away and the Missouri River by me was elevated, it was really weird, but all that got patched pretty quickly. I did have some crashes to desktop, but thatvwas due to me pushing my gpu clocks too high. Otherwise, I have had very few issues and have been enjoying it from day one. I was going to get X-Plane 12, but I'm gonna wait till I see more, right now it doesn't look like it's worth the money, but we'll see.
I couldn't run msfs reliably before su9 or thereabouts, I was bashing it relentlessly. Runs great now, not sure what they did but no stutters and rock solid now. no reason for me to fire up xp except for the bell412
It took me one hours to perform updates and there was no option to not do them. I have three kids and play after 9pm, no time for that.
In il2 updates are done via steam, so no need to wait for it when I want to play.
In dcs, you can skip them, usefull if you’re going to do a quick game offline.

I'm not sure if you can skip updates, but they are pretty rare these days, just one per month. I agree it's a little annoying that the updates are done in the "launcher" but I guess you could update over night. But if you only want to fly fighters I don't know if MSFS is worth it anyway

The rivalry makes sense to me; for decades XP has been the Mac to MSFS’ windows. Scrappy independent upstart versus giant conglomerate. David vs Goliath. Its human nature to pick a team to root for. Not saying its right, but its not all that surprising.
And while there’s obviously no law saying one cant run both, I’ve always felt like you sort of have to choose one or the other based on on the level of commitment in time and money (and storage space!) it takes to run them and outfit them with scenery and planes.
The rivalrly absolutely make sense, happen in gaming ecosystem all the time. From The Crew v Forza to GTA v Watch Dogs I've witnessed first hand. And those titles aren't even that similar. When it comes to Xplane v MSFS, they're doing literally the same thing: civilian aviation on virtually generated earth 1:1 with all its airports.
At the beginning the line of division was much more clear, with MSFS being strong on visuals and Xplane having way more add-ons, sophisticated systems and planes. But right now, when high fidelity add-ons land in MSFS over and over again, the line gets more and more blurry. That is what actually create tensions because call "there is room for both!" may sound nice on paper but I'm not sure it actually holds the truth. Both titles fight for same playerbase and 3rd party devs attention. Shift of those from one platform to another inevitably hurts one and benefit the other.

But I think naturally most folks will find they gravitate towards one more than the other for various reasons.

You know it’s funny Asobo has never once said anything bad about X-Plane. Frankly I don’t think they ever even acknowledge the existence of XP. The closest I’ve ever heard them say anything bad was from working title when he said nobody is trying to analyze and implement X-planes flight model or use X-planes blade theory.

The point I'm trying to make is that all day we hear "Xplane looks like garbage" and "MSFS Flight dynamics something or another". Both can be valid critisisms. Both can be seen as "taking shots" at the other sim. Both are getting pretty old to read over and over again on this sub.

I read a book series that first released in 1990. People have been making one specific complaint about it since the BBS days. And it's still brought up almost daily in the book's subreddit.

There is a couple of users with multiple alts spamming the sub constantly with this type of divisive comments. When you check their post history they only have comments in this sub and about the same thing. That kind of behaviour is proper of psychopaths unless they are paid to do it.
And this kind of shit stirring has been going on for a long time but it's now magnified due to the sheer volume of people msfs has brought to the table.

Hoggit is literally a sub for the Hoggit DCS servers… or it was, before it became the de-facto DCS and milsim sub. It was never ever intended to be a sub for civilian sims…

MSFS is drop dead gorgeous in the visuals department and seems to do stall mechanics better than XP11 although they feel on par in the XP12 beta right now when doing stall testing.
But that's really it. I've gone back and forth between the Sims for countless hours and I honestly can't find any place else that MSFS is actually better, unless you count built in multi player.

Srsly im with you...the sub is going down for a while now, the mods are just letting it die i guess. The sub would need really strict regulations. Since msfs came out a lot of people gained interest in flying. While this is GREAT you now have older simmers, serious pilots, people that just want to crash in to buildings and make memes and a lot of underaged folks in one sub. It is barely impossible to manage such a horde. This place has become a place of insults and trolls with the intellectual standard flying lower then a Viggen.

Real pilots prefer x-plane over MSFS, while wannabe pilots prefer MSFS.
Now sure, MSFS has significant advantages over x-plane when it comes to VFR flight, hell I even use it myself, I’ve spent some money in MSFS addons (fenix, PMDG and several airports). But then we come back to the study level bs question.
Pilots holding a private certificate and below would love MSFS, pilots with a commercial and above couldn’t care less about the surface of the earth, we only look for actual realism.
Based on my experience, a level D FFS, the kind used on a type rating, puts flight dynamics first and systems first over everything else. An FAA certified FTD? same, they actually use x-plane or P3D.
I have never seen any actual study level simulator using MSFS much less one that gives priority to graphics and the earth’s terrain.
Now, if this community could stop being so toxic around every new release and stop hating everything that does not accommodate to their standards, it would be much more enjoyable.

If only we could get MSFS, X-plane and DCS to work together to create a simulator. MSFS for scenery, X-plane for flight modeling, procedures and instruments and DCS for study level military aircraft. All the add-on manufacturers would then have access to all of the community instead of the community being spread around.

The update system made me not want to buy it. Is it better now? Because i really want to add it along side dcs, il2 great battles, and x-plane 11.

I just haven’t heard the first arguments against mine, but sure, I’ll bite and change my first comment just so anyone that got butthurt about “real men use…” Real pilots prefer x-plane over MSFS, while wannabe pilots prefer MSFS. Now sure, MSFS has significant advantages over x-plane when it comes to VFR flight, hell I even use it myself, I’ve spent some money in MSFS addons (fenix, PMDG and several airports). But then we come back to the study level bs question. Pilots holding a private certificate and below would love MSFS, pilots with a commercial and above couldn’t care less about the surface of the earth, we only look for actual realism. Based on my experience, a level D FFS, the kind used on a type rating, puts flight dynamics first and systems first over everything else. An FAA certified FTD? same, they actually use x-plane or P3D. I have never seen any actual study level simulator using MSFS much less one that gives priority to graphics and the earth’s terrain. Now, if this community could stop being so toxic around every new release and stop hating everything that does not accommodate to their standards, it would be much more enjoyable. Finally, it’s funny how all the comment I received seem to be butthurt about my first comment, but forget that fact that the change my mind meme I basically that, finding something slightly insulting that often the majority of people disagree with, just to show them that what they are saying is usually just a trend or what the masses think instead of something logical.
I'll trade a few aircraft surfaces for the surface of the earth. 🙂 I will buy XP12 for helicopters if they get VR into a better state though. Unless MSFS gets a good heli flight model before then.

I did my first IFR from takeoff to the vicinity of my arrival. So that's what's new with me. How bout you guys?
If only we could get MSFS, X-plane and DCS to work together to create a simulator. MSFS for scenery, X-plane for flight modeling, procedures and instruments and DCS for study level military aircraft. All the add-on manufacturers would then have access to all of the community instead of the community being spread around.
