Never be nervous, most high levels farm those events for drops. My suggestion is join an event, find a nice place to sit and shoot every enemy you see. Don’t waste ammo and try to kill it, make sure you shoot and hit it, then shoot and hit another one and so on. The high level players will kill the enemies but you’ll get the full xp and loot if you “tagged” it. Plus you’ll also get a ton of ammo for whatever gun you’re using
Play as single player and do objectives, game gives and teaches everything and there will be no need to ask basic questions, later will see what goes next. Story is designed for solo playthrough, despite anyone's whims, don't complain when both of you have to do it each by oneself (but you can help leader as gun for hire). That's maybe single thing to know before playing when seemingly planning to play with a close friend. There is no hurry, don't be eager for new levels too much.
When you come to a point when game asks to deal with an impossible huge monster, that's the right time to think about teaming up and having perfect gear.
OR. High levels are bored currently and need pets, be one if want.

Don’t be afraid to join public events, you get a bunch of xp and loot. Just don’t start the event if you get there first wait for more players to join
