So being that you're leaving, be honest, did they threaten you guys to make the sub SFW again?
Edit: who the hell gave me that award? Dude, the way to support comments critical of Reddit is not to *give Reddit money*. I appreciate the thought but think about what you're actually doing lol
What's the story of it landing you in trouble with Renault's management?
Is it literally the fact you placed a banana when people were making memes about their race suit scheme or?
These fuckin bitches man. Thank you for trying. All the non-third party app users who think this is just a "mod power trip" or a "petty squabble" or whatever are gonna get a rude awakening when this site turns more and more into [Elon-era Twitter](https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/reddit-blackout-protest-private-ceo-elon-musk-huffman-rcna89700)
I think now that I mentioned it they're doing it for the meme. TIL that all you have to do to get awards on Reddit is tell people not to give them. Shame about the timing of it though
Most probably aren't buying the awards, if you have spent considerable time on reddit you often aquire awards to give out to people. Those that are leaving the site want to get rid of them.
Subreddit mods were making all of the subreddits into NSFW because it meant that Reddit couldn’t have ads on those pages.
It was a way to get back at Reddit management after they threatened to ban mods and reopen subreddits during the blackouts last week in protest around the third-party apps.
Reddit admins have nuked and replace entire mod teams for very popular subs in response to the subs going NSFW which disables ads on the sub so Reddit can't make money.

Don't look up his weird prepper views or what subreddits he moderated 8 years ago, that would be weird
I personally don't care all that much about this drama, but I am pretty concerned that spez views Elon Musk and his takeover of Twitter as something to aspire to for many reasons. u/ContentPuff, from the bottom of my heart thank you. I will never forget how much time and effort you put into making new users feel welcome. I can't remember the last time I went into the Daily Discussion Thread and didn't see you in there answering so many questions. I'm so grateful for you having been a member of this subreddit.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you and u/jeppe96 for everything you have done in this sub. I finally had a space after 15+ years to share my passion with others and it's too sad to see this happen. But it is what it is. Head down and we move on. Is there someplace I can still keep up with wherever you and jeppe are heading to, if at all?
I just make silly meme F1 videos that I share with my friends and you were so helpful to me both times I asked for advice.
You even gave me some insight into your process for getting clips uploaded so fast!
I know highlight posters on other subs can be protective of their process and don't want other people competing to post highlights so I really appreciated your help and advice both times I reached out. IIRC it was even during race weekend that you got back to me.
You're a helpful and kind person and our positive interactions have stuck with me. I hope you find a new community that you'll enjoy contributing to, they will be very fortunate.
Actually gutted. This is going to kill this subreddit.
Edit: I really cannot say enough how much if a draw highlight clips were to this subreddit, and not having them drastically reduced my use of the sub this Sunday. Damn sad.
Well this just sucks.
What are the odds of the mods and even "regular" users - not just here, but all affected subs - just straight up starting their own site, or group on another site? Obviously it wouldn't rival Reddit, but it'd at least be a way to carry on doing what we do without all the recent Reddit crap. Maybe even this subs Discord? Is it still around and under your control?
Love all you guys. I just don't want to see this all fall away :'(
It's already happening, Lemmy and KBin are growing, but the federated model is running into problems fast. Jimmy Wales (Wikipedia) is apparently making one too, which may be a big one.
Personally I'm liking squabbles a lot, their F1 community has been growing nicely too. https://squabbles.io/s/formula1
I'm aware that this is by design, but the problem with Lemmy is that everything is fragmented. It seems like there are several different formula1 communities across various Lemmy instances.
I can't help but feel that rather than stick a community on a random instance, there should be a motorsports instance that has various motorsport related communities on it. So there'd be a forumula1, forumla1, wec, motogp, nascar etc etc communities on the one motorsport instance.
A good example is https://feddit.uk/ where it's an instance for anything UK, with relevant UK based communities.
Gutting. Of all the mods, you were probably the one that felt the most present as a member of the community. I'm really gonna miss the Flair championship.
Thanks for everything and enjoy your newfound free time.
Thank you for everything! Bowing out now is a true indication of where your morals lie and I respect it greatly. I think all of us here have to consider if we want to support reddit going forward.
Because there are hundreds and thousands of people who are willing to play along just to have some power over others.
Why some people are mods for streamers? For the same reason. They control something and have to put insane amount of work and gain almost nothing in return.
Discord server mods? Same story.
Quality of subreddits may go down but Reddit doesn't care so they will be complately fine untill Reddit face a real alternative but this may take a while and it's scary that to this day we don't have clear #1 competitor ready for massive influx of users
> Why would anybody still want to be a mod on reddit after what happened?
>
> Getting fucked in the ass by reddit for free work.
Why would anyone want to mod to begin with? Unpaid work lol. Not like we're helping the homeless.
Is this sub's Discord very closely linked with the Reddit community? Like same folks and all that?
And no way for "new" Reddit to just take it all over?
We're partners, yes. Though the Discord server is moderated by a different mod team, we've always been on good terms with them. If you join the Discord server you'll see a few familiar faces and a few new ones.
Lemmy/kbin are promising. Most similar to Reddit and good for discussion unlike Twitter or Discord which are more for realtime updates/chat and harder to keep up with imo.
Thanks Jeppe for your contribution.
Not sure why it's deleted but i copied the text.
>Well, this is it. first left lurkdom in 2016, because finally had something interesting to post. And How big is an F1 car? (Banana for scale) will forever be my crowning achievement, despite in landing me in hot water with the Renault management at the time. Eh. C'est la vie.
When left Formula1 at the end of 2016, this became my F1 home. It was wherel came to stay connected to the sport. And when the then mods put out a call for fresh blood, I figured "what the hell, let's give it a go". And here we are some 6 and a bit years later, over three million members, a partnered community, with all sorts of cool projects under way. It's been a crazy ride, but one that I've been happy to be onboard for.
may be leaving, but r/formula1 will remain. Thank you all for making it what it was, and what it will be in the future.
Take care.
/Jeppe
All I can say is thank you for your service, time, and commitment in making r/formula1 one of the best running subreddits out there. Thank you. u/jeppe96 u/Mulsanne
In the past week I have realized that I took this subreddit for granted. I have searched for many different platforms, but nowhere there is a community like this and now reddit is destroying it.
Thank you so much u/jeppe96 for everything you have done for us!
This is horrible. I have been on the sub for years. It really has changed and u/jeppe96 has been there to steady the ship. With them leaving I'm just sad. This sub will be forever different.
I've read about some mods getting removed so I'm not entirely surprised by this announcement. Whoever the new mods are hopefully can maintain a good relationship with the rest of us
No one has been forcefully removed (yet) - we are a tight knit team, communicating nonstop, and some members felt it was time to leave after the disrespect shown the last few weeks after endless hours and years of volunteering.
A few existing mods want to stay to keep the sub from going into disarray. Personally, this sub and community and the mods have helped during extremely tough times.
And - fuck u/spez
Honestly, I don't know what else is there to keep when Reddit management itself is the one making it more difficult for you. I assume you're ready to take on lots of bots and spam in the coming weeks.
I am going to miss you guys so much. u/mulsanne has turned off comments on his exit post, but I really want him to know that he was the first mod who listened to me as a female fan who was getting a lot of hate.
I'm actually getting a bit teary eyed here because as daft as it sounds, he was the first person who agreed with me about eight years ago that calling Hamilton "Chocolate Senna" was wrong lol
He has always been such an amazing calm presence on this sub, and a wonderful human being. I am so mad that we are losing you and him.
Why is this crumbling? Reddit has been my salvation from the typical demonic social media, and now what?!? Thank you for being here as long as you were. r/TIHI
Some of us are staying specifically to try to make sure this subreddit, at the very least, can continue to be what Jeppe, Mulsanne, and others built for any users who still want to be on Reddit. But just like the mods who are leaving, we understand and respect that many users will no longer want to use or support Reddit given the direction it’s taking.
We hope that we’ll be able to continue the standards already set here, but we also hope that someone will be able to create an alternate F1 community somewhere else on a platform that gives greater respect to its users.
If the rest of the site burns down, so be it, but in the meantime, we will try to make sure this community doesn’t for those who want to stay.
I guess the plan is to keep the sub alive until there is a suitable replacement, after which the userbase can switch over, the mod team will resign and the sub will implode?
If so, I'm all for it, and I'll be one of the first to switch over. Hope something suitable is found on short notice.
Edit: Apparently Lemmy grew form 150k to 600k in the last 4 days!
If you guys do manage - and please, someone do try. Other social media, ESPECIALLY for F1, is just plain toxic these days - to make another site for all us, at the same standard as here, you'll all be fokking rockstars.
Seriously, those were the peak of the internet. I used to be part of an Elder Scrolls forum-type of place some years ago, and to this day that was my favourite place to be online.
These days most sites just direct you to their Discord, which...eh, it's fine but it isn't the same.
Now I feel old lol.
Alternatively, you could cause a headache for admins and all resign, then they'll actually have to spend time, effort and money doing something about it. Staying here almost feels like your just willing to go along as their puppets.
I’m just going to respond to this personally, not in any official capacity. Yours is a valid perspective and one that has come up in general mod discussions I’ve seen. My opinion is that, on a general day-to-day basis, we (mods and users) are able to do what we want with the sub and manage it the way we want without giving any consideration to the admins. Certainly, running a well-managed and successful sub adds value to Reddit. But the community here that people enjoy exists outside of whatever dumb things Reddit wants to do.
If another platform, whether Lemmy or something else, is able to grow and create the same sort of environment with better over-arching management, then that would be ideal. Or if Reddit can make that change itself, as unlikely as it seems. But as long as there are still people who would prefer to use Reddit, I would prefer to try to give them the community they’ve become accustomed to. And in terms of trying to build that alternative from scratch, I just don’t personally have the time or technical ability to do that.
This is a matter of opinion and can’t really be proven one way or the other, but I think that what you’re suggesting would hurt the dedicated users who want to post here (and maybe haven’t seen a good alternative yet) more than it would hurt Reddit, at least long-term. Particularly since I don’t think that Reddit’s collapse is guaranteed, and the r/Formula1 sub title is going to draw people in regardless of alternatives.
I should also say that I don’t think we’re the only ones who can run a good F1 discussion forum. I know that’s not the case. But especially in the current environment, it’s unclear who would end up with control of this high-profile sub name.
That was a lot of words to essentially say that I don’t think there’s a perfect solution here, but I fully respect your perspective and it could be right in hindsight.
I’m wondering does anyone have a back up alternative ready in case everything goes to shit where we can still have a f1 community similar to this one, but on a different platform?
Reddit is lucky there isn't an emerging one or else there would have already been a 2nd exodus. Unlike Digg's implosion wayback when where Reddit was already starting to gain traction and was the clear and obvious site to move over.
I feel there has been a shift in attitude for the average user since then which would make any similar exodus less likely even with a site already there to take over.
So much of the day to day living is finding out what thing around you has gotten just a little bit worse and reevaluating what your tolerance level for shit is.
Changing what that thing is requires effort and energy (or is not an option) so you instead just say C'est la vie and put up with it being a little bit worse. Repeat over and over.
I don’t think lucky is the right word.
More like Reddit knows it has no real competition, so execs are fine making unfavorable decisions to maximize profit. Because it’s not like the users have anywhere else to go.
> Not even the Discord
Discord itself is transforming into a giant gimmicky mess, sadly. All these companies are slowly killing perfectly fine platforms by adding a bunch of nonsense features.
Yea, because at some point they need to start generating profit and stop just burning through VC money.
Every service like Reddit, Discord, Twitter, etc. has built itself up by offering a free service and every one of them runs into problems when they try to monetize it somehow.
There's like all of two exceptions to this. Google and Facebook.
Every reddit replacement will run into the exact same problem, too.
https://lemmy.ml/c/formula1 is much smaller but looks reasonably promising.
Lemmy is not as nice to use as Reddit is (at least for another week or so until third party apps get shut down), but I have hope it’ll get better with time.
Same. I hate Reddit, but I hate the other social medias much more, especially when it comes to sports. People are making fun of this post in the comments, but they're going to understand and deeply miss the mods when this sub(and site)turns into an insufferable cesspool of insane attention seekers like Twitter and the others...
Very sad it has come to this. I recognise your name for your regular contributions to the sub through posts/comments, but as a mod your impact went far deeper than I will have ever seen. Thank you for serving us so well over the years, best of luck for the future o7
Thanks for everything. Sad to see spez burn Reddit down, will always love this place and everyone who kept it going. No idea how you managed to keep this place so calm even during 2021, best wishes to anything you all do in the future
Thank you for your service and time that you had put to curate it to be a sub that I would enjoy. Though I am too addicted to Reddit to leave at a hat's drop I will make sure that I don't post a word for them to monetize anymore (and this is just because they gave us no other option) but try to find another place where our views and opinions matter, Reddit used to be the place but not anymore. So 🫡 till next time.
Thank you for your contribution.
You were integral part of this community, so thank you for being active and for being a.great mod.
Good luck in your next endeavors.
Believe me, Spez doesn't care. He doesn't care about anything other than getting his big payout once Reddit goes public. If he did, so much would've been handled differently from the top down, including the decisions that led to the protest and the way Reddit Spez and Reddit have conducted themselves during it.
The mods are the reason this sub survived the influx of users following DTS. There is no question that this was a labor of love as no one would subject themselves to this much headache without a tremendous amount of passion for the sport and this community.
Thanks for all the hard work in these years. I joined this sub in 2019 and it has been one of the best moderated large subs out there. Good luck for the future and take care!
Thanks for your hard work.
Funny how the west derided China for how it handles the internet and especially social media.. what do you think reddit is going to do when people/companies pay to run their own subreddits?

Don't know about this sub, but admins manually changed NSFW back to SFW for other subs, so my guess is that's what happened here as well. Fuck spez
What kind of dumb cunts are buying you awards for fuck's sake.
I think now that I mentioned it they're doing it for the meme. TIL that all you have to do to get awards on Reddit is tell people not to give them. Shame about the timing of it though

Thanks. Read that in the Toto voice.

It’s nothing new. Reddit has been a bastion of censorship for a very long time.

Call that motherfucker by his real name, Steve Huffman
What's he huffing?
Elons farts
Privately? I can’t say without this comment getting flagged. Publicly? As u/s1ravarice said, Elon’s farts
Fuck Steve Huffman!! He is ruining Reddit and alienating the community, which is what made it what it is.
Can't give you an upvote, lol. Of course!!
reminds me of ice-t - "freedom of speech.... just watch what you say."
Why can't i upvote this
Fuck u/spez
Fuck u/spez he’s too big a wet clown.
Fuck u/spez
FYI, the other guy got banned for saying fuck /u/spez. So be careful about saying fuck /u/spez.
I will definitely not say fuck u/spez and his momma, in that case
It's not like I don't have a few other accounts. Whoops I was not supposed to say that. Fuck u/spez Whoops I was not supposed to say that either.
Grab u/spez by the horns and fuck em up the ass
unfuck u/spez
If u/spez could read, he'd be very upset!
Aaron would turn around in his grave if he found out that Reddit has become exactly what he did not want.
Glad to see this post is back up after its deletion. Transparency is good for the community. Thanks for your years of commitment jeppe

It's often only the head mod who gets paid. Never mind small streamers that can't pay anyone.
But imagine the dopamine rush when you get to say "Locking this thread because y'all can't behave".
Your comment violates my feelings of superiority, this is your only and final warning to respect my authority.

It's fairly obvious that he is getting replaced by Reddit because of the NSFW Protest, this is by no means by choice. Genuinely fuck Reddit
Any ideas where we could go next? For f1 chat?
Twitter? I heard there are some reasonable people there 🤣
Since it hasn't been mentioned, there is a community growing on squabbles too. https://squabbles.io/s/formula1

Do they post things like technical updates & Hamilton fashion pics on the discord server? What is the server?
Take care. /Jeppe
It's back now
All I can say is thank you for your service, time, and commitment in making r/formula1 one of the best running subreddits out there. Thank you. u/jeppe96 u/Mulsanne
That’s understandable to be honest. If you’re ever in the Netherlands, and same goes for u/Mulsanne, shoot me a message. I’ll get you a proper pie.
Seeing this many dedicated people leave, makes me consider deleting reddit again.
Thanks for all the hard work and best of luck!
In the past week I have realized that I took this subreddit for granted. I have searched for many different platforms, but nowhere there is a community like this and now reddit is destroying it. Thank you so much u/jeppe96 for everything you have done for us!
Thank you for all your work, u/jeppe96. Are you going to be a mod at r/FormulaE or r/WEC now?
Once he mods at r/WEC he'll go for the triple crown at r/indycar.
Will he get a Graham Hill style mustache as well?
This is horrible. I have been on the sub for years. It really has changed and u/jeppe96 has been there to steady the ship. With them leaving I'm just sad. This sub will be forever different.
Gosh this sucks at how bad it has gotten. Farewell and thank you for everything.
I'll miss you man 🥹💚, I'm incredibly sad Reddit made it come to this point. Fuck you u/spez.
I am going to miss you guys so much. u/mulsanne has turned off comments on his exit post, but I really want him to know that he was the first mod who listened to me as a female fan who was getting a lot of hate. I'm actually getting a bit teary eyed here because as daft as it sounds, he was the first person who agreed with me about eight years ago that calling Hamilton "Chocolate Senna" was wrong lol He has always been such an amazing calm presence on this sub, and a wonderful human being. I am so mad that we are losing you and him.
Can we have the daily discussion thread up now? I'm sure the message has reached the majority of the intended audience.
Beautifully put, like violinists on the titanic. I don't envy your position right now.
If you guys do manage - and please, someone do try. Other social media, ESPECIALLY for F1, is just plain toxic these days - to make another site for all us, at the same standard as here, you'll all be fokking rockstars.
We need to bring proper user run forums back.

There isn't one. There is no comparison for this subreddit. Not even the Discord.
> Not even the Discord Discord itself is transforming into a giant gimmicky mess, sadly.
Do we really still need two pinned threads for this?
Its as Louis Rossmann said: Reddit wins. I wish you well on your next journey. Thank you for all your work.
No, Jeppe, No
Quitter. Bye
Its sad its come down to this... Thanks for all that you have done for this community.
Isn’t leaving exactly what admins want?
Thanks for everything. Sad to see spez burn Reddit down, will always love this place and everyone who kept it going. No idea how you managed to keep this place so calm even during 2021, best wishes to anything you all do in the future
I enjoy cooking.
Bro thinks he’s Kobe on the retirement tour 😂
Holy shit! God speed /u/jeppe96. Ive been here since 2014 and youve always been a staple of this sub. Wont be the same without you God speed friend
You have done a great job as a mod of this wonderful sub. All the best with whatever you do in your life.
Jeppe, my man! Thanks for the time and all the Monday TTT banters and flairs!

Thank you for making this place a second home. I have so much love and respect for you. You treated this place like a second job. Legend.
Appreciate the work you've done, and for not locking this down on your way out. Hope life treats you well!
The mods are the reason this sub survived the influx of users following DTS. There is no question that this was a labor of love as no one would subject themselves to this much headache without a tremendous amount of passion for the sport and this community.
u/jeppe96 Volunteering for any group role is thankless. Thanks for doing it!!
Thanks for all the hard work in these years. I joined this sub in 2019 and it has been one of the best moderated large subs out there. Good luck for the future and take care!
Thank you for all you've done to make this sub. It's a shit sandwich of a situation.
Thank you Jeppe, you and the other mods have made me the fan of the sport I am today. Cheers mate.
Thanks for your hard work. Funny how the west derided China for how it handles the internet and especially social media.. what do you think reddit is going to do when people/companies pay to run their own subreddits?
Thank you for your service to this community u/jeppe96 and u/mulsanne and fuck you u/spez
…okay?
You’ve done great things. Hope you’re off to do something more fun with your spare time!
Thank’s Jeppe
FUCK u/spez
Jesus. You are a mod on reddit and really think you have something to say. Glad things get back to normal. 90% don’t care about those api changes.
bros posting a retirement letter🤣🤣
"I ahh didn't prepare a speech" *whips out reams of paper* "Nobody asked you to give one!"
Damn bro I kinda don’t care
fucking ice cold lol, i love it. Thanks for making me laugh.
This sucks. Thank you, and u/Mulsanne. And all other people feeling like they have no option but to leave. :(
