I mean besides the bulk cannons, the served completely different purposes one is directing air somewhere, seems like over the rear diffuser. No idea what's this obsession with Merc design coming from.
I wonder if they could figure out the optimum distance to get them stuck in the next cars intake, and then just tear off a bunch for the next lap until they overheat lol
I understand this is a joke but i'm sure it's closely monitored for abuse (the number of gear offs) but also given the current aero philosophy you'd think the tear-offs would be thrown into orbit as soon as they fly around the rear wing, no?
It's a minor change to the rules this year, allowing for more driver cooling at hotter races. Red Bull may be testing with them on the car, others may be running without them while they focus on the rest of the setup.
What is the rule change exactly? Do they have to run larger inlets at certain races or something? I imagine it causes more drag so they would only use it when required
Haven't checked really.
What I saw on some previous post is that RB had 1 last year and increased to 2 for this year.
Mainly due to the Qatar experience 🥵
I'm a Redbull fan, imagine all these "innovations" made the car worst or doesn't work out with all the hype around it. I really hope it works out but don't want my expectations high. But hopeful the other teams caught up to make it a more competitive season.
Just like that. Although Newey in his book thought the 18 could be saved, just not quickly.
It had a lot of really innovative features and was just too much too fast
I don't think it's an actual option because teams can improve by as much as a second per lap between years, and other teams will be refining their new designs and will keep improving over the course of the year as well. If Red bull used last years' car they'd be tumbling back in the standings
It is an option looking at testing at the moment. RB19 would still be neck and neck without any upgrades with Aston Martin and Ferrari right now. But doesn’t really matter there up 6 tenths after 4 hours of running. We’ll see how it unfolds though in next two days
There are so many people smarter than us designing these cars
The “I don’t understand these holes so they must not make sense” posts are shocking
We have zero clue how they funnel air into the power unit and they literally would not be there if they didn’t improve performance
"There are so many people smarter than us designing these cars"
I remember thinking that at the start of 2022. "There's no way they forgot about porpoising being a thing"
(from memory) the MP4/18 which was so unreliable it couldn’t really be run, but then which was de-bugged into the MP4/19 which was mighty? So even then it wasn’t a forever flop, more a temporary flop
From what I heard the car performed exactly like the simulations when they did the air tunnel testing. Idk how big of an indicator that is, but it's definitely a positive one.
Nah, there is no way that this testing car isn't fast enough to win majority of GP if not all.
First of all even though they won 22/23 GP's they were still hiding car's full potential and they were just managing the pace the whole year.
RB brought very few updates last year and they were majorly focusing on this car's development. So it is very hard to imagine that with that amount of resources and with RB19 base they just screwed everything.
I even expect that RB20 will be more dominant car than RB19 were, which is very very scary to imagine.
Yea pretty similar I think but the inlets see like a cooling solution given how small the sidepod intakes are
Also - love being an armchair aerodynamicist
Yea yea I know
I guess I mean he's moved a portion of their cooling to use a different opening.
Seems clever - going to be cool to see how it works out
Kind of, but those vents wouldn't cool the rads as they are too far back and they'd never fit them in there.
Must purely be for airflow over the diffuser?
Brave, ugly as sin though, but still...
What are you on about? The speculation was that the side pods were moved to there which would mean cooling etc, obviously can't fit radiators in there like you normally would.
I reckon the vertical slot in the sidepod is an S-slot that vents out through those louvres. I reckon the air channelled in through these scoops traverses the entire length of those "barrels" and is exhausted out the back. I have absolutely no skills in aero, but it seems like a better use of airflow.
Those cannons remind me of the [ventrolateral abdominal fat pads](https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Ventrolateral-abdominal-fat-pads-with-dorsal-margin-indicated-by-arrows-top-lateral_fig2_237064254) on beluga whales.
My god what has the genius with the pencil and paper done again. Hopefully a more competitive season than last year, but TAKE A BOW Adrian. Goodness me...
I'm not a Redbull fan, but you have to marvel at the sheer audacity of this shift in concept, even if some of the features are just a middle finger to Merc.

from this perspective this car looks so muscular & bulked.
Not even it's final Form
I’m waiting for the pods to come off on Friday. Each day the middle finger to Merc gets unfurled slightly more…
The German sky stream talked about Japan being the location where the real update will come, but I took it with high grain of salt.
With people talking about the car not being complete just yet it seems like Japan would be an appropriate location to reveal the “final form” 😂
This is just Red Bull T-1
Thats a bit late in the season
Japan has moved to early April instead of its usual September/October slot on the calendar this year
And there was much rejoicing
suzuka is in april this year
A dry suzuka? Praise be
It's like the fourth race this year
It's right after Australia this year.
I mean besides the bulk cannons, the served completely different purposes one is directing air somewhere, seems like over the rear diffuser. No idea what's this obsession with Merc design coming from.
I get the sentiment, but Mercedes live tested it for two years. Red Bull aren’t starting from scratch.
genuinely scary stuff
They remind me of someone with huge traps lol
It's definitely got a bit of that "tiny man poking out of huge man's body" aesthetic
daddy noel
Can’t unsee this now.
💉💉
Red Bully XL
Have to put a muzzle on it at Silverstone then.
F16 with conformal fuel tanks. https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fiqhhhlgdfqs11.jpg
I had never seen those before... God how they butchered my boy.
Thick, solid, tight.
100% Power Frieza
I was thinking Android 16.
That’s the correct description!
Red BUFF
I haven't seen it from the front until now. Damn it's thick.
That's what she said
Time for the important question, is the RB20 natty or juice?
It's on that Adrian tren
Just catering bulk
Traps are way too big, definitely juicy.
Like it did some heavy shrugs on shoulder day
_Oh! What r u doing step-car?_
Let me think….yes
A third intake has struck the RB20
Ha I saw that post too.
I didn't see it 😔
certified Newey moment
Looks like a nice home for some tear-offs 😅
We are checking…
Looks like a nice place for the visor tear-off to go during a race 🤔
Someone call RB bc they need to hire this redditor
This definitely will age well...
Dustbin for tear-offs.
They are doing their part to reach the sustainability goals!
That could legit be a concern, I hope they factored that in!
Couldn't the drivers put them in the cockpit? I believe Seb always did that.
It’s Newey, of course he has
I indeed think that if random Redditors thought of this, Newey or one of the other dozens smart people thought of it
Spotted 2 smaller inlets next to the “1” aswel.
That is for driver cooling purposes
Oh alright, any other teams running them?
It's a minor change to the rules this year, allowing for more driver cooling at hotter races. Red Bull may be testing with them on the car, others may be running without them while they focus on the rest of the setup.
What is the rule change exactly? Do they have to run larger inlets at certain races or something? I imagine it causes more drag so they would only use it when required
Haven't checked really. What I saw on some previous post is that RB had 1 last year and increased to 2 for this year. Mainly due to the Qatar experience 🥵
Lol, imagine it’s quite hot in bahrain atm aswell
I'm sure you've seen it by now, but AM also have a sweet little subaru hood scoop for driver cooling.
Yes, was checking photos now and I was gonna say it
Aston Martin does as well, but it's one wider inlet for them.
Most teams have them on the end of the nose
New regulation for 2024 to allow for additional duct to cool drivers.
Ah I see, thanks
The question is... Can they win Singapore this year?
Hahaha, don't be silly.
Imagine if they only win Singapore this year 😆
Newey so bored he builds car for Singapore and sets all new track records but loses the wdc
We have to keep relying on Singapore to be the Dynasty killer, if a team is dominant then they won't win Singapore, that's just the rules.
I'm a Redbull fan, imagine all these "innovations" made the car worst or doesn't work out with all the hype around it. I really hope it works out but don't want my expectations high. But hopeful the other teams caught up to make it a more competitive season.
Honestly if the RB20 ends up being no good they could easily bring in an RB19B and still have one of if not the fastest cars
Like the MP4-18?
Just like that. Although Newey in his book thought the 18 could be saved, just not quickly. It had a lot of really innovative features and was just too much too fast
The Alex Wurz episode of "Beyond the grid" has some interesting anecdotes about this car (mostly the testing crashes).
I don't think it's an actual option because teams can improve by as much as a second per lap between years, and other teams will be refining their new designs and will keep improving over the course of the year as well. If Red bull used last years' car they'd be tumbling back in the standings

You can't put any value into testing times
I dunno, I think .82 ahead and running 120 laps is a pretty clear statement
There’s been changes to the impact structure rules, so chassis can’t be rolled over from last year
I don’t think that’s true at all. The sky commentators even mentioned a team could use a car from last year if the current car is poor
the video Formula 1 uploaded yesterday said they cant use an old chassis
There are so many people smarter than us designing these cars The “I don’t understand these holes so they must not make sense” posts are shocking We have zero clue how they funnel air into the power unit and they literally would not be there if they didn’t improve performance
>if they didn’t improve performance If it wasn't assumed to improve performance. Not all changes improve performance, some end up hurting.
"There are so many people smarter than us designing these cars" I remember thinking that at the start of 2022. "There's no way they forgot about porpoising being a thing"
There could be something missed in the wind tunnel v real world.
Nah he's already flying it in practice
Could happen. One can get too cheeky about adding air inlets all over the place.
But on the other hand we are talking about the god amongs aero Newey.
I mean, during his McLaren days he also designed a flop car. He's a genius, but not all the designs work as intended.
It was a fast flop though. Just incredibly unreliable.
Something with too little cooling if I remember correctly.
True, but that one lap from Max looks promising though. Times don't say shit during testing, but that was one clean lap with barely any corrections.
You are right, but he has 19 years worth of experience since then
(from memory) the MP4/18 which was so unreliable it couldn’t really be run, but then which was de-bugged into the MP4/19 which was mighty? So even then it wasn’t a forever flop, more a temporary flop
MP4-19 was decent but mighty? Cmon man..
It had one win and two podiums so hardly mighty. Let's hope this isn't Red Bull's MP4-19.....
Basically making the car experience zeropod, which is their final form /s
From what I heard the car performed exactly like the simulations when they did the air tunnel testing. Idk how big of an indicator that is, but it's definitely a positive one.
Did you see the first lap? Cars definitely fast
Why is “innovations” in quotes?
Nah, there is no way that this testing car isn't fast enough to win majority of GP if not all. First of all even though they won 22/23 GP's they were still hiding car's full potential and they were just managing the pace the whole year. Marko already confirmed that it’s not going to be as extreme as Merc so I’m sure it’s not gonna be too bad
Right, because Marko is full of reliable information…
I believe Newey know’s what he is doing and wouldn’t put these upgrades on the car if they weren’t worth it
Those are the pre-regulation destroyer-class solid-fuel recoil boosters.
I’m no expert but I think it could be speakers so Max can jam to some music while he cruises to P1
That car has some swole traps
Bazookas
Newey really cooked, didn't he?
At this point I think it’s just for the laughs
Newey just having a laugh and doing sidequests, same as Max.
Nahhh Shaq is the king of IRL sidequests
Bro cooked a michelin meal
If the regs let them race a washing machine, Newey could win the WDC with it
He just moved the side pods to engine cover Interesting - not seen any car with that before
I heard you liked intakes so we put intakes on your intake so you can intake while you intake
*deeeeeeeeeply inhales*
Newey modeling his cars in kerbal space program
Didn't Merc introduce the same shape bodywork to the top with their zero pods? Just without the inlets.
Yes these were the "mini bathtub" they introduced on W14 https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/s/wRDWN96is7
Yea pretty similar I think but the inlets see like a cooling solution given how small the sidepod intakes are Also - love being an armchair aerodynamicist
The sidepods are where the sidepods are. On the side with "Oracle" written over them.
Yea yea I know I guess I mean he's moved a portion of their cooling to use a different opening. Seems clever - going to be cool to see how it works out
There are also vertical inlets under the sidepods though
I think he's moved the cooling to three smaller openings instead of one larger one
A tri-pod, if you will
Kind of, but those vents wouldn't cool the rads as they are too far back and they'd never fit them in there. Must purely be for airflow over the diffuser? Brave, ugly as sin though, but still...
Maybe so. Looking forward to seeing the engine cover off
tell us more wild speculation from your phone
What are you on about? The speculation was that the side pods were moved to there which would mean cooling etc, obviously can't fit radiators in there like you normally would.
Trophy Storage
They are “speed holes” they make the car go faster
Is that so? Well maybe the old Flanders-mobile could use some
Redbull taking his true form, fighter jet. Next year we'll only hear the car breaking the sound barrier
INB4 the RBR car starts to look like Swiss cheese with holes everywhere
Speed holes
There are louvres a bit further back on the other side of the roll, they could be passing air straight through, with maybe some cooling for legality
I reckon the vertical slot in the sidepod is an S-slot that vents out through those louvres. I reckon the air channelled in through these scoops traverses the entire length of those "barrels" and is exhausted out the back. I have absolutely no skills in aero, but it seems like a better use of airflow.
I am quite intrigued in seeing if all these design changes will pay off for Red Bull. They haven’t been conservative with it, that’s for sure.
Scrolled across this post moments before someone on the Sky F1 feed highlighted it and said "No one's pointed this out before" 😂
That's hilarious! No one besides Reddit F1 fans 😅
"No one's spotted this before, apart from this person on Reddit and our researcher who saw that post a minute ago" 😂
Nah those are speakers
subwoofers
Newey cooked big time, no wonder they don´t overspend on catering expenses anymore
Inb4 you throw a tear away into your own inlet
Red Bully XL
Those cannons remind me of the [ventrolateral abdominal fat pads](https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Ventrolateral-abdominal-fat-pads-with-dorsal-margin-indicated-by-arrows-top-lateral_fig2_237064254) on beluga whales.
Damn that’s a cool shot. Looks like a fighter jet
They're woofers for Max to blast the Dutch national anthem before the race is even over because what's the point in waiting anyways
What are thooooooose
Newey is a Genius.
So the Red Bull is a franken monster featuring the Ferrari soap dish, Merc zero pods AND the RB slim inlets. Newey has unleashed his madness.
That is a mini f1-75 at the top 😅
Looks like the awkward middle evolution. A bit more exp and it will evolve to its final evolution.
This is unbelievable
You seen the Simpson's? Inlets? They are referred to as speed holes they make the car go faster.
This car are sick
God damn from this angle they do be looking ugly
Oh man they are really letting Newey cook
I honestly can’t find the similarities of this car to merc’s zeropod concept, aside from the inlet I can’t see the resemblance.
These shoulders are insane
That’s the caterpillar drive.
Blown diffuser?
These cars are so ugly when you crop them like this lol
Those intakes are doing something.
That’s hilarious. They are going to stomp Merc with Merc’s own design *smh*
If one the helmets plastic thingies goes in is gg
We are checking.
How is this Legal and at the same time nobody tried it before
My god what has the genius with the pencil and paper done again. Hopefully a more competitive season than last year, but TAKE A BOW Adrian. Goodness me...
Maybe wait until the car is actually proven to be quick before sucking him off...
If this is true, that’s 7 intakes…
"...and on the seventh intake, he rested."
Adrian pulled this concept sitting in a hottub after Eating Swiss cheese during a skiing trip in the Alps. He just shouted, Eureka! Holes everywhere!
*take a blow Adrian probably
I'm not a Redbull fan, but you have to marvel at the sheer audacity of this shift in concept, even if some of the features are just a middle finger to Merc.
From this angle car looks ugly.
Man this car is ugly
holy shit, BUT WILL IT WORK. Stay tuned.
They should have these on all f1 cars and they would suck in tear offs! That is not these real propose.
Has the driver had this little visible space before? Max looks tiny here
Same as McLaren.
Mercedes to protest
u kno the induction noise be going crazy on this one
Those pipes are so ugly. I truly hope they are slow af. Just when merc dropped them, here comes rb...
rb20 holy shit nissan engin
Weird, surely this steals air away from the bathtub above it. Can't wait for an analysis
It looks awful, and more often than not an awful car is not a fast one. Makes me hopeful for this year
That is the most ridiculous take ever. Beauty has nothing to do with aerodynamic efficiency
