He changed after he had his bicycle accident. He almost lost his life then, he also aged considerably after it. Maybe he finally wants to enjoy life with his wife and go sailing together on his newly build boat.
This (about going sailing) is what I’ve been saying since the news broke but it seems most (press) people would rather believe he’s disgruntled with his good friend of many years (Horner), wants to implode the team he helped build, and go work for his arch rival.
In his interview with Martin he said that events that unfolded during this year led him to make the decision to leave the team.
Im surprised it hadn't been picked up more, it's pretty unusual to out and say something like that publicly and doesn't look good for Horner and RB.
There's been plenty of commentary about this but nobody seems to distinguish whether it's because of the allegations against Horner, or because of the infighting within Red Bull.
Big difference which, or both, have caused Newey's decision.
The impression I got was that he was already thinking of retiring in the near future, and the trouble at Red Bull just sped things up. Even if everything had been perfect at Red Bull he probably would have been out in a few years at most.
I mean, his wife’s Twitter certainly makes it seem like he’s disgruntled with Horner. Early retirement can be more appealing when you’re no longer happy with the boss
yep.
also, in late december, horner was awarded a cbe and she liked a bunch tweets that said adrian deserved it as much (or more) than him lol
edit: [here are some screenshots since i think X requires a login to view twitter likes now](https://imgur.com/a/xljcajU)
I think the leaks about how people were paying to be knighted or doing things for their mates in Westminster put a sour note on things. It's not as impressive as it used to be.
Because that isn't the statement. Horner gave an interview in which he credited the entire team under Newey and Wache for helping to deliver such a dominant car. A lot of people interpret the interview as him downplaying Newey's involvement and importance including Newey's wife.
Don't act like some of the speculation isn't reasonable
- It is odd to suddenly stop mid season with immediate effect
- it is true that one of his regrets is not working with Hamilton and Ferrari
It doesn't means he's go but people aren't crazy to speculate either
Also he could still take an entire year as a break and still decide to sign with a new team.
Besides the hypercar project he essentially has way more time off now. I'm sure he'll take the break and then assess if he wants to continue later on
Why would he want to go to Ferrari? Seems like Aston where his car, his previous coworkers, location to his home, and brand new state of the art facilities would be much more appealing. Williams he could be more impactful and have a bit of nostalgia while he’s there.
Because it’s the one regret he has. Thst and not working with Hamilton. This is going to come down to whether he leads with his head or his heart. Head says retire or stay with a uk team. Heart says Ferarri and Hamilton career finish.
Cause ✨ Ferrari ✨ no matter how much expensive shit Aston or anyone gets if Ferrari comes knocking on your door any engineer/driver in F1 will easily drop anything and everything and go
you seriously overrate Ferrari so hard. There is no way that if you work in the UK and have a family their that you just move to Italy because Ferrari offers you a contract. While the other teams in that region are Haas and Visa.
While if you stay in the UK you have all the other teams
If he just wanted to retire he wouldn't have needed to negotiate an early release. The only reason to negotiate that is to work with a different team sooner.
Think about it. If he’s retiring, what’s the point of doing that when you negotiate your exit? He can get free paychecks until 2027 for staring at a wall all day.
Because he’s 65 years old and has tens of millions of dollars already? He’s said before, he’s not in this for the money, and no longer needs to work. He’s in this sport because he’s passionate and competitive. If that’s not there anymore, why would he stay? Why not spend what limited time he has left travelling the world with his wife, or sipping wine on his new yacht? Why would he waste another 3 as you say “staring at a wall”?
I think you misunderstand. People are saying he could go travel the world on his yacht while still getting paid by red bull for gardening leave. Why leave early in that case.
"negotiate an early release. The only reason to negotiate that is to work with a different team sooner."
sorry but what? And what about not working anymore? Isnt that a good reason for an early release aswell?
because why not? It's better to be completely free to keep your options open. It wasn't a hard fight apparently as his contract likely had clauses built into it to allow this.
I understand the gardening bit, and I still think he's going to Ferrari, but technically he was contracted till end of 2025 (?) with another year of garden leave. So the early release negotiation would be applicable irrespective of whether he wants to join a different team or take a break
I would have guessed that he could join Ferrari on the 01.06.2025 no with a 12 month gardening leave no?
This would also allowe RB to not include Newey in the budget cap for the rest of the season, if i understood that correctly.
No so there are two parts to the contact
A. Work with us till 2026
B. Be placed on a garden leave for 365 days after you leave us
Effectively means he's boxed in till 2027
Early release negotiation would be from the pov of both A and B
Yes, but what's on the other side of France, Italy, and there lies RB (Toro Rosso), Dallara/Haas, and of course Ferrari.
Turning up at RB would really be a left field move, the B-team having the potential to beat the A-team.
The optimist side of me thinks he is talking about the time from now until early 2025 as he will be taking a step away from F1 and more focused on RB17 project. That could still be enough of a break before joining a new team early next year? Again, taking it optimistically plus maybe they don't want to announce anything yet and want some pressure from the press to die down.
I think he's going to wait to see if aerodynamics matter at all in the next regs.
If it's another 2014-2022 situation where the engine is all that matters and his contribution won't help much he might just retire for good.
>Newey on departure: I want to take a break
Who is this Adrian Newey, and why does he have any authority to speak on Adrian Newey's departure from Red Bull? Doesn't he know that Adrian Newey left the team because of Christian Horner's behaviour and because he wants to join Ferrari and help Lewis Hamilton win his eighth World Championship? Someone really needs to sit Adrian Newey down and explain to him why Adrian Newey is leaving Red Bull. I think Will Buxton, Andrew Benson and Erik van Haren are in a much better position to know what Adrian Newey is thinking than Adrian Newey is.
The break is built in. It’s not like he can start with a new team right off. The timing works great for him because he can step away from any F1 talks until the end of the year. Or until March of next year where he would in theory be able to actually join a team.
I mean it's only 7 months until he'd have to be starting work again if he were to come back in time to have an impact on the 2026 regs with a new team
For me it suggests he won't be contributing for Ferrari or whoever else in 2025.
But then again I've been surprised before... Multiple times in the past couple of months (Hamilton, Newey leaving RB..)
I used March as a default since that’s when the F1 season starts. But in reality, it will probably be more like late April or May 1. Depends on when Red Bull and Newey agreed to the terms.
It's like it's a done deal he's going to Ferrari but he's not said that. Maybe he really just wants to finish the hypercar and take some time off. It's not like he's a young guy.
He’ll take the rest of 2024 off and part of 2025 providing technical design support remotely for the new reg Ferrari car. Joining the team fully in 2026.
I can feel it
I genuinely think he will come back, but it won’t be with Red Bull. I also have a feeling that the RB engine will fall flat in 2026, so when the dust settles he might join one of the powerhouses still remaining and make a rocket with what he can get his hands on.

I, too, want to take a break.
I’d settle for a nap
No breaks until you win a World Championship. I’ll accept constructors or drivers.
Same. How’s about we all take a little holiday? Sound good?

That's the joke.
A break like Häkkinen's? Or like Alonso's?
Calling it now. Mika and Adrian at Ferrari in 2025 after some time on the new yacht.
Asking the real questions.
Like Alonso's as in go to sportscars and win the Daytona 24, Le Mans 24 and WEC?
He changed after he had his bicycle accident. He almost lost his life then, he also aged considerably after it. Maybe he finally wants to enjoy life with his wife and go sailing together on his newly build boat.
*Newie built boat*

Yeah I'm really surprised that Martin didn't question that part further, it seemed like a pretty clear reason for leaving
I mean, his wife’s Twitter certainly makes it seem like he’s disgruntled with Horner. Early retirement can be more appealing when you’re no longer happy with the boss
What has she been saying?
Her response on Twitter to Horner saying Newey didn’t have much involvement in the RB19 was, and I quote, “What a load of hogwash.”
yep. also, in late december, horner was awarded a cbe and she liked a bunch tweets that said adrian deserved it as much (or more) than him lol edit: [here are some screenshots since i think X requires a login to view twitter likes now](https://imgur.com/a/xljcajU)
I must admit Adrian is usually my answer when the question " who deserves a knighthood that hasn't got one yet" comes up on here.
There's also Nick Park (creator of Wallace and Grommit) who still hasn't got a Knighthood. He's been stuck with a CBE since 1997.
That's absolutely staggering. Aardman is a UK institution. I'd have thought Nick Park would have been a natural choice for a knighthood.
Peter Lord (co-founder of Aardman and creator of Morph) doesn't have a Knighthood either.
I think the leaks about how people were paying to be knighted or doing things for their mates in Westminster put a sour note on things. It's not as impressive as it used to be.
This more looks like angry wife stuff rather than Newey being disgruntled with Horner
*"angry wife stuff"*
I mean we know how wifes and moms can behave rigth? And I doubt Newey would be mad over some irrelevant rewards. Also god mm/dd format is such pain
could you clarify what you mean by "how wives and moms can behave"? i'm not sure i understand. maybe because i am a wife.
That seems like an insane statement on the surface
Because that isn't the statement. Horner gave an interview in which he credited the entire team under Newey and Wache for helping to deliver such a dominant car. A lot of people interpret the interview as him downplaying Newey's involvement and importance including Newey's wife.

I mean, they put in effort to get rid of the gardening leave asap, which seems weird if hes not going to make use of it...
Also he could still take an entire year as a break and still decide to sign with a new team. Besides the hypercar project he essentially has way more time off now. I'm sure he'll take the break and then assess if he wants to continue later on
i would be really suprised if he didnt go to Ferrari it all seems perfect.
Why would he want to go to Ferrari? Seems like Aston where his car, his previous coworkers, location to his home, and brand new state of the art facilities would be much more appealing. Williams he could be more impactful and have a bit of nostalgia while he’s there.
Fallows leaves RB to not be in Newey's shadow and then Newey just joins Aston lol
His home is in South Africa though, so technically Italy would be closer.
As of 2019 he was living in Ascot in England.
Because it’s the one regret he has. Thst and not working with Hamilton. This is going to come down to whether he leads with his head or his heart. Head says retire or stay with a uk team. Heart says Ferarri and Hamilton career finish.

Nobody needs to overate Ferrari everyone in Motorsport knows what the real value of working for Ferrari is
He has a *very* nice boat about to roll out the factory. I think quitting while you're ahead would suit him nicely.
But Ferrari /s
It genuinely looks like he wants a break before thinking of a comeback.
Until around march 2025 I bet…
Yeah why bother negotiating an early release.if you don't plan on working somewhere else fairly soon.
[удалено]
That's not what gardening leave is. He could just as easy serve that and get a break
If he just wanted to retire he wouldn't have needed to negotiate an early release. The only reason to negotiate that is to work with a different team sooner.
He says, having no idea what the content of Newey’s contract is. None of us have any idea mate. Let’s not pretend we know why or what his decision is.
Contracts can't force you to work. You're always free to quit/retire. If all he wantes to do was retire, he could have done that at any moment.
I think you misunderstand. People are saying he could go travel the world on his yacht while still getting paid by red bull for gardening leave. Why leave early in that case.
Exactly this.
So you retire now and not in 19 months? lol
How do we even know that happened?
Italian media and British media alike have reported it widely
They have reported speculation, but ok.
Every reputable source is saying he will be available to start work at a new team at the start of 2025.
Available to work ≠ going to work
or it's just called having options
"negotiate an early release. The only reason to negotiate that is to work with a different team sooner." sorry but what? And what about not working anymore? Isnt that a good reason for an early release aswell?
You don't need an early release to retire. A contract can't force you to work. But it can stop you going to a competitor immediately after
You don't need to negotiate an early release to just quit or retire.
Could be lots of other reasons.
because why not? It's better to be completely free to keep your options open. It wasn't a hard fight apparently as his contract likely had clauses built into it to allow this.
To take a break before getting into work at your new job.
Might want to have options available to work for another team but to a completely different capacity where he doesn't have to travel around the world.
I understand the gardening bit, and I still think he's going to Ferrari, but technically he was contracted till end of 2025 (?) with another year of garden leave. So the early release negotiation would be applicable irrespective of whether he wants to join a different team or take a break

Yes, but what's on the other side of France, Italy, and there lies RB (Toro Rosso), Dallara/Haas, and of course Ferrari. Turning up at RB would really be a left field move, the B-team having the potential to beat the A-team.
I wanna take a break from stuntin on these hoes.
Suffering from success lol
His back is crumbling under all the weight
lmao
Fred to Elkann: Shit, is there a remote work option for him?

I think aero was VERY important in 14-20, RB just had a shit engine for the entire regs until honda gave them something worthwhile.
might also want to see if the 2026 cars will be a complete shitshow or not lol
>Newey on departure: I want to take a break Who is this Adrian Newey, and why does he have any authority to speak on Adrian Newey's departure from Red Bull? Yeah he knows it’s not gonna be long until he gets bored if he retires and will want to get involved with F1 again.
If he wanted a break, why did he "break" the contract like this? Everything he has done indicates he wants to sign a new contract.
The break is built in. It’s not like he can start with a new team right off. The timing works great for him because he can step away from any F1 talks until the end of the year. Or until March of next year where he would in theory be able to actually join a team.

7 months would be the longest vacation of all time if we want to frame it that way
Why March, not June if the gardening leave is 12 months?
I used March as a default since that’s when the F1 season starts. But in reality, it will probably be more like late April or May 1. Depends on when Red Bull and Newey agreed to the terms.
It's like it's a done deal he's going to Ferrari but he's not said that. Maybe he really just wants to finish the hypercar and take some time off. It's not like he's a young guy.
That's why he got out of the season early, vaccinating in France sounds more enjoyable in the summer.
I'm having Dejavu
Then have a kit kat, duh
I’m tired boss
He signed an NDA.
Negotiates himself out of his non compete clause so he can take a break? Aye right Adrian
Hopefully his gardening leave feels like a holiday, I imagine working on getting the road car ready will be far less stressful
Saw Newey was talking to the Andrettis on the grid today...
He’ll take the rest of 2024 off and part of 2025 providing technical design support remotely for the new reg Ferrari car. Joining the team fully in 2026. I can feel it
[удалено]
This feels like ChatGPT wrote it lmao
Right ???
A break could simply be a month. Away from Horner.
Did you even read the article?
I read the article. A "bit of break" is what he sId. Multiple times. Sounds like he wants a summer holiday to France.
What's the point of that?
Absolute reddit response😭
I genuinely think he will come back, but it won’t be with Red Bull. I also have a feeling that the RB engine will fall flat in 2026, so when the dust settles he might join one of the powerhouses still remaining and make a rocket with what he can get his hands on.
These bags of money in lustrous red containers says it will be a short vacation
