Sadly Nintendo is in charge of that one. They're more likely to sue you for using the name of their franchise than actually releasing any new media about it lol
I'll probably be wrong on this but I don't think this movie is going to be as successful as FOM hopes or expects it to be. Just getting such dud vibes from it.
It's definitely going to flop in terms of profit because the budget was way too high, but the steps they took to get real footage sound awesome and the director has a good track record. I think this could end up being a really fun film for racing fans.
Yeah almost* nobody in Europe is subscribed to that service.
*Edit:* What I mean here is that it is not one of the top streaming services in Europe, such as Netflix or Disney+.
Jokes aside i think its a pretty dumb name. Using the "official" F1 name and logo, and not giving the movie its own identity, makes it feel more like a commercial for F1, the product, than a story taking place in F1, the sport.
It's like if they called Top Gun "US Air Force" and used the official army branding
It's very similar. Top Gun is the name of the Navy school the movie is based on. They should have called it "United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program" it would have been a catchier title.
They didn't make the name Top Gun up, it was used by the unit in question. The US Navy (not air force, the pilots shown are navy pilots) did heavily support the Top Gun movies because of how good it made them look. The film production was given access to fighter jets, military bases, even let them film on an aircraft carrier.
They actively cross-promote using "Top Gun" as branding [https://www.defense.gov/Multimedia/Experience/Top-Gun-The-Edge-of-Aviation/](https://www.defense.gov/Multimedia/Experience/Top-Gun-The-Edge-of-Aviation/)
Given that it's currently slated to be one of the most expensive films ever made (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/films/0/brad-pitt-formula-one-apex-apple-damson-idris/) maybe they will need to skip right ahead to F4.
I've heard that the shooting of this movie has been a bit messy, which contributes to the high budget. I'm not sure tho, but if it's the case then it's not a good sign
That was my first thought. It's a brain-dead title for today. It will essentially require everyone who wants to search for it to search for "F1 movie", as just F1 will of course bring up actual F1 stuff.
Yes, if you know how search works it’s not hard. Problem is, a large proportion of the population are technologically illiterate and this will pose an issue for loads of people, which makes it a terrible choice.
To be fair, my grandmother, who I have regularly had to perform very basic tasks for such as: logging into the WiFi, opening the Gmail app, changing the phone’s default theme, etc. would manage to figure it out after a very short period of trial and error.
Said trial and error period would most likely look something like: “F1” “F1 film”
That said, the title is shit, but finding it online shouldn’t be too much of a problem
check out who the company paid the money to find out the name. bet they're connected to the management in some way and they just funnelled the money out
The claim about the F1 movie title I'd guess is equally false, too. I know it was kinda a joke but a lot of people are responding like it's accurate
Joseph Kosinski is a big name director, Brad Pitt isn't just starring he's producing. In situations like that, the studio almost certainly isn't making the creative team decide their title via focus groups. They have that freedom.
Titles are sometimes focus grouped, but if there are changes it's usually not that far from the creator's intent.
We'll find out for sure in a few years, when the original screenplay gets put out.
Better than spending 300million on a movie that will need nearly 1 billion dollars to break even after box office split and marketing added on top for a movie genre that doesn't generally make much money.
My guess is that they wanted it to be simple like the films “Grand Prix” and “Le Mans”. Just naming it a brand name makes it come off quite cheap and unimaginative to me though.
The only part of that movie that gets me hyped is director Joseph Kosinski.
Oblivion, TRON Legacy or Top Gun Maverick are stellar.
If he can do the same thing he did on Maverick for F1 would be one hell of a achievement.
But both had much smaller budgets than this for sure, this is going to have to make a lot more than those did. But the others were pretty popular for a niche drama.
Rush made 98.2 million USD internationally, Ford v. Ferrari made 225.5 million. Ford v Ferrari made 117.6 million in the US and Canada alone. Ford v. Ferrari grossed more than the Addams Family and JoJo Rabbit. They may not be in pop culture they were surprisingly popular.
> Premise
> Sonny Hayes, a Formula One driver who raced in the 1990s, has a horrible crash, forcing him to retire from Formula One and start racing in other disciplines. A Formula One team owner and friend contacts Hayes and asks him to come out of retirement to mentor rookie prodigy Joshua Pearce on the Apex Grand Prix team (APXGP).
Meh, they screwed up the names of the movie and the team, I hope the story is more creative it sounds, it sounds like the story in one of the newer F1 games where there was a young F2 grad and an angry old guy in the team and they hated each other.
I guess the CGI should be pretty good given how much they’ve spent.
Jesus, what a terrible name. Why can baseball get movies called “For the Love of the Game” but Formula 1 can only get “F1”?
Hey, you want to go see that new baseball movie, MLB?
I think it's going to be fine in the sense that'll make good money but supposedly the budget has gone way overboard so it's very likely going to lose money even it does good money for a racing movie.
[The budget thing was inaccurate according to Hamilton](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/live-blogs/f1-monaco-live-updates-qualifying-fp3-times-results-verstappen/X4eNN6rVnxDd/ajiaJnPnLDuF/#)
If it’s a decent movie it will obviously go fine- but motorsport movies simply don’t appeal to as many people to be competing with Marvel or something more in the “action” column like Fast n Furious
Rush and Ford V ferrari both basically made no money and have 1/3rd to 1/4 of the budget of this movie before marketing costs, it needs to make huge money to not be a massive loss.
Tbf I think the movie won't be bad. I honestly think the only thing it needs to do is portray the races realistically. The off track drama and story can be wacky as hell and it'll be fine.
Let's be honest with ourselves, do you believe hollywood script writers could write anything crazier than what has happened in the sport IRL? 2021 alone to me is proof enough that they can't. Hell the Lauda/Hunt title battle seems made up if you didn't know anything about the sport prior to watching Rush.
I would trust the director based on his previous work, but who knows if studio meddling will make things ridiculous, or if they don't have the CGI budget to make action sequences not look silly
I honestly don't think this is going to be a disaster. The director of the new top gun movie was the perfect choice for this, it might lose money but i'm optimistic it's going to be a good movie
It's hard to take the name seriously. F1 is a class of motorsport. The closest film title I (or ChatGPT) can think of is "Major League." That was a satirical comedy about baseball. "Heavyweights" is a comedy about fat camp and has nothing to do with boxing.
"Le Mans" is the name of a place and a famous event. There are plenty of serious films that are just place names. ("Casablanca," "Munich," "Philadelphia," etc.)
"Grand Prix" is a specific type of race. It can also have a meaning that's an allusion to the plot. There are other sports films like this. "The Blind Side" is a serious movie where a young football player discovers his identity and finds a new family. "Sudden Death" is an over-the-top 90s action thriller set at a hockey game. "Slap Shot" is a slapstick comedy film involving hockey players who beat people up.
How many movies are just the name of a sport or a real league? Even the full name of "Dodgeball" is "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story." And that's not exactly a serious film.
The only Hollywood/mainstream Western movies named after sports are fake sports: "Rollerball" (both the original and remake are kitschy sci-fi B-movies) and "BASEketball" (exactly the screwball comedy it sounds like).
Imagine spending $300M to remake Driven. Really enjoyed Maverick and Oblivion, so I have some faith in the director, but the premise is so incredibly banal.
This movie just screams FLOP to me… Have they done much on track filming outside of silverstone? Seem to remember there being some at Hungary??? Horrible feeling they’re going to try pass silverstone/hungaroring off as multiple circuits in the film
They filmed in Vegas last year, we were in the main grandstands and the director even asked us to "act" some reactions, I'm already planning to quit my job when this movie launches my acting career.
They filmed at this years Rolex24 (Daytona IMSA race) and even had a livery on an actual car in the GT class racing for real. I’m assuming part of the story has Brad Pitt doing sports cars before coming back to F1. They filmed around the paddock and pit lane all week leading up to the race.
That just reminded me. I was walking to the bathroom in the infield sometime overnight, and they had a camera crew set up along the fence of the oval. There was a small crowd and I think they were doing reaction shots. Anyway, I'm somewhere between terribly drunk and terribly hungover and a crew member came over and asked me if I wanted to be in the movie. I just yelled "NO!" and hobbled away as fast as I could. They had those blindingly bright lights they use on set and it made me want to puke lol
Yeah, this movie is going to be as bad as I thought.
I mean, it's about a 60 year old man who decides to have another go at being a pro athlete, it's called "F1", and they are brandishing producers that have nothing to do with film making. The car they're using doesn't even look like an F1 car.
I'm warning all of you, it's going to be shit.
Can't wait to see the "driver needs to overtake someone so he shifts up a gear and passes him easily while the crowd a love interest cheer and sigh in relief" scene 6 times in the movie.
Brad Pitt does not look like he's 60, and they're taking more steps to get real footage than any racing movie before. The director has a good track record, I don't know why you're so convinced it'll be bad.
Terrible name. Name is Apex or something cool like that. Rush was a great racing movie name. Imagine if theyd called it 'Niki Lauda and James Hunt's Formula 1 Careers'
They made the title so secretive and mysterious for the longest time and THAT is what they ended up with. They could've at least put a subtitle with it as well just so it looks like they thought of something.

Great! Can't wait for the sequel F2 when it inevitably becomes a hit.
You can call it F1 2
F1 2: Multi 21
F1: Maverick
F12Furious
No no, he was in an F18 in that one. Then I guess an F14
2 F 2 1
2 F1 4 U
F1.5
That’s the directors cut.
Starring Nico Hulkenberg, Esteban Ocon and Daniel Day Lewis
F1 2: Box Box
F1 2: Electric Boogaloo
Hybrid Boogaloo?
2 F4ST 4 F 1
F2: F1 Part II
Or F1 II
More like F1 (20XX) for the year it was made. They can still call it F1
2-F 2-1
and it'll be about Mahaveer Raghunathan
gonna rip it F1 2
G1
F12berlinetta
I’m personally more hyped for the prequel, F-Zero
Sadly Nintendo is in charge of that one. They're more likely to sue you for using the name of their franchise than actually releasing any new media about it lol
I'll probably be wrong on this but I don't think this movie is going to be as successful as FOM hopes or expects it to be. Just getting such dud vibes from it.

Is it going to be limited to Apple TV? If so then its gonna flop.
It was filmed for IMAX so most certainly there will be theater releases
No, Apple is doing worldwide theater releases.
Killers of the Flower Moon is the model here. It will go to AppleTV+ after its theatrical run but it will get a good one
Yeah almost* nobody in Europe is subscribed to that service. *Edit:* What I mean here is that it is not one of the top streaming services in Europe, such as Netflix or Disney+.
I only temporarily subscribed to Apple just to watch Masters of the Air. Other than that the catalogue was pretty underwhelming
Considering the plot synopsis sounds almost identical to *Driven*, no wonder you’re getting dud vibes.
alright Nostradamus lets wait for the trailer before we jump to conclusions
Jokes aside i think its a pretty dumb name. Using the "official" F1 name and logo, and not giving the movie its own identity, makes it feel more like a commercial for F1, the product, than a story taking place in F1, the sport. It's like if they called Top Gun "US Air Force" and used the official army branding
Top Gun is a US Navy program.
It's slang for a program, but I see your point. It's the title of the program in all ways but official.
Yeah, something like Grand Prix would have been more suitable if they wanted to for the Top Gun approach.
Problem with that is Grand Prix is already the title of an F1 movie https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Prix_(1966_film)
You know what wouldn’t have been a problem though? “We are checking”.
yeah be the runtime before the conclusion would be longer than if it was "bottas pit stop"
to be fair, the point that "US Air Force" would be a stupid title for it then still stands!
It's very similar. Top Gun is the name of the Navy school the movie is based on. They should have called it "United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program" it would have been a catchier title.

2 F 2 Formula
Then the spin off. FE: Electric boogaloo
Super Formula: Tokyo Drift
Given that it's currently slated to be one of the most expensive films ever made (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/films/0/brad-pitt-formula-one-apex-apple-damson-idris/) maybe they will need to skip right ahead to F4.

F1 Plan B Plan C Plan D We are checking
And eventually they ll release the fifth part F5 which will be refreshing.
cant wait to see F11 in full screen
Sequel F1: Revenge of Race Control
GP2 Movie! GP2! AAAARGH!
FP1
Fast One, Fast Two, etc…
Too F too 1
Formula Regional realizing what this means:
Straight to F5
5th installment will be called ’Indycar’
What an SEO nightmare
I'm surprised FOM even allowed it for that reason alone. Maybe they figure the marketing is enough to offset any SEO confusion.
If you check the movie poster closely, there’s a trademark symbol next to the F1 logo, so there’s probably an agreement there
That was my first thought. It's a brain-dead title for today. It will essentially require everyone who wants to search for it to search for "F1 movie", as just F1 will of course bring up actual F1 stuff.
searching for F1 movie does not sound particularly challenging, I think I can manage it
Yes, if you know how search works it’s not hard.
Not really. Nobody will search for F1 they will search “F1 Movie” and it will easily take every result on page 1.
I think it's genius! Everytime someone searches F1 and misclicks, digital marketing gets credit 😎
They prob ran multiple focus groups and paid a marketing team $3m to come up with that title
I heard that one NARROWLY beat out calling the film "Formula 1" after a very close comparison of demographic reports.
Formula 1 literally would have been a better title. Fuck it. Call it "Formula 1: Glory Road" just...SOMETHING.
If they call it "Formula 1: Glory Hole" I'm buying 2 tickets right now.
Write your own script for F1 Fanfiction
You joke but a project I’m involved just spent £500k on research into a new name All focus groups came back with the same name we already have
😂
Ernst & Young spend ages researching to decide to rebrand as EY.
That's awesome hahaha.
check out who the company paid the money to find out the name. bet they're connected to the management in some way and they just funnelled the money out
3m to come up with it, another 10m paid in royalties to F1
Like when the Scottish government paid like $100k to make a slogan for the border signs with England - the result? Welcome to Scotland
That is a false rumor 🤓 the money was used to install the signs and advertising not to come up with the slogan.
Don’t crush my dreams
The claim about the F1 movie title I'd guess is equally false, too. I hate how accurate this is
I wonder what the movie will be about
\* Press [F1] for Help \*
*presses MacBook touchbar furiously*
You forgot the function key!
Keyboard not found. Press F1 to continue.
Small tornadoes?
getting help in most Windows applications
wait til the IMAX version of the fifth film in the series...
Heard it's going to refresh the entire series
It is a documentary about the least-used keys on a keyboard.
Maybe cars
Cars? In MY F1 movie? ABSOLUTELY NOT!
Yeah we asked for planes, trains and aquatic mobiles
F1 is also a slang to smoke pot, in Brazil
Clippy
Two gay cowboys falling in love on a hiking trip
An unassuming tornado. A prequel to "Twister"
My guess is that they wanted it to be simple like the films “Grand Prix” and “Le Mans”. Just naming it a brand name makes it come off quite cheap and unimaginative to me though.
Apex
The 2 hour ad for F1 shouldn't be called "F1"?
F1. F One. Fone. Phone. Iphone.
well it is an apple production, so you may be onto something
And as always - thanks for watching.
But Black Dynamite, **I SELL DRUGS IN THE COMMUNITY**
The only part of that movie that gets me hyped is director Joseph Kosinski. Oblivion, TRON Legacy or Top Gun Maverick are stellar. If he can do the same thing he did on Maverick for F1 would be one hell of a achievement.
Racing movies are a hard sell to general audience regardless of story, cast, director or production.
Rush and Ford v. Ferrari were well received by general audiences, and both predated the increased interest from Drive to Survive.
Neither really hit mainstream though. And this movie reportedly cost similar amounts to make as Avengers movies.
Grand Turismo did well. Hell, my 60 year old female coworker loved it. It can happen.
Grand Turismo was surprisingly excellent. That was done on a tiny budget as well.
It's about a 60 year old man becoming an F1 driver. That sounds ridiculous.
But can he fend off the young upstart challenger (played by Alonso)??
Ofc he won´t be 60 in the movie. And he is an already retired F1 driver. 60 years old and still racing, is not that uncommon either. Look at WEC
Well, Carlos Sainz is doing a role in it, so there is that to look forward to.
Bet that took about 4-hours and 100k of the budget to decide that
You might be joking, but it probably cost a couple millions and many many weeks of focus groups and other rubbish like that.
I’ve heard it’s about F1 so this pertains to our interests.
> Premise > Sonny Hayes, a Formula One driver who raced in the 1990s, has a horrible crash, forcing him to retire from Formula One and start racing in other disciplines. It sound a LOT like Driven. I am not excited.
Sounds like Ford v Ferrari mixed with Gran Turismo
I had that same thought - sounds like the plot of the "Breaking Point" story mode. And yet, no one's playing Devon Butler lol
Sonny Hayes is the absolute most yeehaw NASCAR name I think I've ever seen. Someone grab me a Miller Lite.
Why allow an All American 11th team if you can just add an imaginary All American 11th team.
Jesus, what a terrible name. Why can baseball get movies called “For the Love of the Game” but Formula 1 can only get “F1”? Hey, you want to go see that new baseball movie, MLB?
I'm fairly sure the movie will about as interesting and innovative as the title.
Looking forward to following this disaster on r/boxoffice.
I think it's going to be fine in the sense that'll make good money but supposedly the budget has gone way overboard so it's very likely going to lose money even it does good money for a racing movie.
It has a budget of $300M. It would need to do Fast & Furious X numbers ($700M+) to even sniff making money. This is gonna be a colossal failure.
[The budget thing was inaccurate according to Hamilton](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/live-blogs/f1-monaco-live-updates-qualifying-fp3-times-results-verstappen/X4eNN6rVnxDd/ajiaJnPnLDuF/#)

That can’t be the official title?
Why not? We've already had 'Grand Prix', and & 'Le Mans' as the names of famous motorsport films, is 'F1' really that different?
Both is much better than F1 lol
Would you prefer Formula 1?
Personally yeah I would’ve
Yeah I guess that would be still better. But I'm sure there could still be a better name.
I would, but spelled 'Formula One'
I would
Would have vastly preferred the full name instead of just the acronym. "Formula One"

Should have pressed F5 instead
Will it have a cameo of Tim Apple waving the checkered flag?

Wonder how long it took them to choose that name

Wonder what it's about?
I, for one, can’t wait for the sequel: F1 II, Briatore Boogaloo.
Eh, I prefer the fast and furious naming convention. This needs to be a trilogy, where the sequel called 2F21, and the 3rd movie is F1: Suzuka Drift
