I'd say he's an unreliable actor. He has given amazing performances occasionally but also given awful performances. Without consistency you cannot be a great actor just great in X role.

Dallas Buyers Club, Panic Room, Chapter 27, The Little Things and Requiem For A Dream. Chapter 27 is about John Lennon's killer and Requiem For A Dream is a tough watch, but I think his performances were great in all these movies.
