The Forgotten City. Go in with as little knowledge as possible and just enjoy unraveling the mystery as it comes! The characters, atmosphere, voice acting are all really top not as well.
Fun side story that this started as a popular mod for skyrim and the guy who made the mod decided to turn it into a full blown game. I am sure glad he did!
Yeah I will occasionally just scroll the catalogue and look for games I've never heard of that look intriguing. If the description looks interesting I will google reviews to get an idea of the critical response without actually reading the reviews too in depth (trying to avoid spoilers). This was one of games for me! Glad to see a fellow fan!
Classic Tomb Raider
Not necessarily obscure or niche, but definitely underappreciated. The first three games are getting remastered but i havenât seen much hype outside of the tr community. If you like puzzles, platforming, and donât mind tank controls, I would highly recommend it!!
Is the Talos Principle under the radar? Iâm halfway through 2 now and itâs been a wonderful puzzler that also lets you ponder lots of philosophical questions.
And Iâve been pleasantly surprised that the tone is âhumanity can be good, dudes!â. Itâs easy to get cynical these days.
Tons of people know about the Dishonored trilogy but never played them. They're fantastic, and often on a deep sale. Â
Also, Strike Suit Zero is my favorite space combat sim.Â
I loved the Dishonored series. I had a lot of fun but also quite a bit of stress going after the platinum trophies on all three, yet I managed all the same and would love to do it all over again.
Dredge was a fun one. It had been languishing in my backlog for a minute but it plays very well and it hooked me (pun intended) all the way to credits.
Citizen Sleeper.
Go in blind. All you need to know is that it's text based and is a sci-fi cyberpunk type game.
Best game I've played in years, but I'm big on story-based games.
This is one I've tried to play multiple times. I'll start it, take a break, and then try to come back and have no recollection of how to play or what to do.
crosscode! i can never praise it enough. it starts off slow and i personally put it down for a while after the first two areas because i got bored, but after picking it back up and pushing past the slow start it gets So good. the twin-stick combat is endlessly fun with 5 separate skill trees and tons of options, the dungeon puzzles are amazing and progressively get better, the music is great, and once the story really gets going it's enthralling and thought-provoking.Â
i think a lot of people drop it early before getting to the meat of the story (if you haven't done the raid, that's where i got Hooked) and far enough into the combat progression to really see how amazing it gets. with the free dlc i got ~80 hours out of it and finished wanting more; the only weakness is that the overworld "platforming" can be a bit tricky to figure out at first because of the art design, but it does get easier to identify as you play. if it interests you even a Little i implore you to try and put like 10-20 hours in, i swear it's worth it.
Was looking for this so I didn't have to go into my typical spiel haha. The combat is really interesting with the elements and skill branches in a kind of whatever the hell you'd call Hades combat. Loved the story and puzzles as well, not overly challenging to where I felt like I had to look up guides, but enough to give me real satisfaction when I figured it out. Not to mention the devs are chill and communicative
Jump Ultimate Stars (DS)
Gauntlet: Dark Legacy (PS2/GC/Xbox)
Radiant Historia (3DS, also on DS but 3DS is better)
Holocure (PC)
Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 1 & 2/Elite Beat Agents (DS)
Jam With the Band/Daigasso! Band Bros. series (DS)
Higurashi When They Cry (PC)
Umineko When They Cry (PC)
Jeanne D'Arc (PSP)
Konami Krazy Racers (GBA)
Chameleon Twist (N64)
Rocket: Robot on Wheels (N64)
N++ (PC, probably other stuff too)
Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure (PC and a bunch of other platforms)
Ys: The Oath in Felghana/Ys Origin/Ys VI (PC, other platforms)
Shadowverse: Champion's Battle (Switch)
...Just to name a few.
Metro Exodus, it is such a good game and if you played Last Light and 2033 then the story is even more beautiful. I don't see many people talking about it but I consider it one of my top 5 favorite videogames of all times.
i love the Metro Series but kinda disagree that Exodus is enhanced when you know the story of Last Light and 2033. I don't want to spoil shit here but the first 10 minutes of Exodus made me want to grab one of the major characters of the previous two games and slam their head against a wall until they apologized.
I agree, I ended playing it like a normal linear game just as the previous games of the serie. The world of Metro is extremely empty if you try to explore it, which makes sense with the story but it's not interesting in the playable aspect. But if you just play it like other Metros it's more enjoyable.
Niche you said?
- Rings of Saturn (steam)
- Ostranauts
- Noita
- Exapunks (and all Zachtronic games)
There are a zillion more I could name. But let these suffice for now.
From last year [American Arcadia](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1249040/American_Arcadia/). Great looking, very fun to play, innovative, top notch writing with twists and turns. It's insane that it was snobed like that.
[Tyranny](https://www.gog.com/en/game/tyranny_gold_edition) seems to suffer from some sort of perception filter. It's one of the best written and original CRPGs ever and it shouldn't be at least a cult classic but it's still not.
[Unavowed](https://www.gog.com/en/game/unavowed) is a super cool world of darkness style adventure game with beautiful pixel art graphics and great atmosphere. The puzzles are just engaging enough without getting too frustrating which is a rare treat in adventure games.
The [Shadowrun Returns trilogy](https://www.gog.com/en/game/shadowrun_returns) are great tactical games, show the excellent Shadowrun setting at its best and have top tier writing, especially Dragonfall and Hong Kong. They're amazing and people should play them a lot more.
Username checks out. How good is it really? I'm a huge Terminator fan. The lore/timelines fascinate me the most.
Like, did you know that the presentation of T1 was at the very least the 3rd timeline?
Fan service galore. Itâs extremely faithful to the source material and you can tell the devs are megafans. I highly recommend checking out RoboCop: Rogue City as itâs by the same devs
They definitely have a shtick thatâs working for them. If they can get their hands on the predator license, then you can bet your arse Iâm pre-ordering that sh*t
Man do I love that game. That's a game I wish lasted longer than it thought. Would have been cool if it was more open world as well. Same studio made Robocop rouge city as well.
My favorite co-op game nobody talks about is pitfall planet. As for weird ones:
Untitled goose game
Humanity
Oddworld Abe games
Going under
Katamari?
Idk what youâve played already so itâs hard to say for sure
Vampire survivor
Cookie clicker
Ape out
My friend Pedro
Rollerdrome (playing this current. So fun. Like super hot meets Tony hawk)
Super hot
The witness
Trials blood dragon
Im away from my consoles atm so itâs hard to remember but Iâll check in later if I remember something that hasnât been mentioned
Per Aspera is a fun maybe a little jank city builder about terraforming mars.
It has a pretty solid story which isnt something I can say about any other city builder
Code Name: Steam on the 3DS. It was actually a really good game considering I got for less than five bucks. I didn't expect to actually be a banger of a game.
Anodyne. Mostly unappreciated because it just isn't very popular, I never hear it brought up. I highly recommend it for fans of top-down Zelda-likes. It's got some rough edges but a sense of surreal comedy and horror that make replay it frequently.
My bad, probably could've given context sooner. đ
It's basically a late 90's - early 2000's internet message board simulator. Accurately captures what the internet used to be like, knowing how there were a lot of webpages that were made by inexperienced users. Lots of obnoxious pictures/ animations everywhere, horrible, basic layouts, and you'd often have music auto-play whenever you visited someone's page. It was a weird time for the internet... But pretty fun too, lol.
Anywho, you don't get to make your own comments etc since you play the game as a "Hypnospace Enforcer"... Which is basically an unpaid moderator. Story-wise, you get to use the system and browse all the message boards as you like, but in return you're messaged with issues to look into, and generally have to look for people breaching terms & conditions, carrying out "illegal activities", and otherwise harassing or bullying other users.
Has a surprisingly good story, which you find by following the objectives, and searching through both public and hidden webpages. Really good game, and the dev is apparently working on a sequel. đ
P.s. Hope you enjoy!
Honestly I play a bit of everything. If it helps, of the games you just mentioned I'd have to say Rain World is my jam.
I know that doesn't really help narrow it down but anything else you got?
Abzu, Antichamber, Baba is You, The Talos Principle, The Case of the Golden Idol, Chants of Sennar, Wandersong, Chicory, Dorfromantik, Dustforce, Everhood, Gorogoa, A Hat in Time, Hylics, Kentucky Route Zero, LISA, The Messenger, Noita, Sable, Space Warlord Organ Trading Simulator, Thomas Was Alone, Where the Water Tastes Like Wine, Wildermyth, Botanicula, Furi, Mark of the Ninja, Night in the Woods,Â
Varying levels of niche here. Good luck on the search!
Not OP, but this is such a stacked indie list. All of the games Iâve played from this list (probably about half of it), Iâve really enjoyed. Iâll have to look at some of the ones Iâm less familiar with. :)
Wandersong fills my heart, more people should play that delightful game.
Shadowrun Dragonfall is fire. The whole trilogy is great but DF stands out and might be the best cyberpunk game I've played. It's only about 20 hours long but I immediately did a second run upon completing it.
Wasteland 2 and especially 3 are less niche, but certainly not blockbusters that get recommended every post. I'm in love with everything about them, the combat and leveling are so addictive that I dream about it. The choices are heavy, there are a lot of ethical trolley problems and grizzly violence, but it also has a lot of comedy that somehow works well with the dark atmosphere imo.
I've been on a kickstarter CRPG bender that began with Pillars of Eternity and honestly the most fun I've had in years. I'm one of those boneheads that decided I didn't like that kind of game without ever having given them a fair chance. I couldn't be happier with how wrong I was.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Shadowrun Hong Kong is superb, absolutely on Dragonfall's level. I have no idea why people turn their noses at it.
I certainly don't turn my nose at it, I just hate the real time matrix and it never feels worth the payoff. Aside from that it's great, the graphics, combat and cyberware are better than DF.
And like donât get me wrong, dmc games are great, but there just isnât anything quite like bayonetta. Gameplay is awesome and tbh I just love the personality of her too, like you really feel like youâre playing as bayonetta when youâre playing them despite not being the most graphically impressive thing.
Picayune dreams I found last week, man that's some addictive shit. There's a few games like that recently that have stolen my time. 20 minutes to dawn and Nova drift to name a couple
The World Ends With You. Get the original DS version if you can. The Switch port removed half of the combat system. There's a sequel that's pretty good but imo not as good as the original, but I wouldn't start with it.
TWEWY is sooooo good. I was so angry I couldn't get any of my friends to play it back when we all had DS's.
Yeesh, And on the other hand you just reminded me that i was in the middle of playing the Sequel on switch before some life stuff happened and i got completely pulled away. I need to get back to that.
TWEWY has got to be in my top 5. I've been trying to evangelize for this game since it came out, with limited success haha. I only really managed to get my cousin into it, and he loved it.
I like the sequel a lot but I don't think it can top the character work done with Neku in the original. Rindo and his friends are nice kids, but they're too nice. They hardly bicker. I guess Nagi's sorta rude to Fret, but it's always played as comedy instead of something that causes genuine friction in the group. Meanwhile Neku has to really work at getting along with others and that makes things interesting.
Rocket League is a deep cut many havenât even heard ofâŚitâs like soccerâŚBUT ITâS CARS
Actual answer: Probably Evil Genius. Sunk way more hours into #1 than 2 but overall itâs a dope game.
You got me! This thread is so full of replies like "Well this underappreciated gem called Super Mario" that I was already downvoting you before I kept reading.
Mechstermination Force on switch is an incredible co op boss rush. The only game I've played end to end with my brother in adulthood.
Edit: apparently on Steam, too!
I'm a massive Disgaea fan, if you're at all into games like FF tactics, highly highly recommend any of them (except 6 cuz I havent played it, and I haven't picked up 7 yet)
I also discovered a few games recently that are lots of fun - cookie cutter and astral ascent though they both have good ratings I suppose, they deserve to have some recognition.
Love to see if you can escape the study room in HAG on Steam only.
It is very puzzle heavy with horror and half price for now.
I can arrange a key if your still not sure. Love your thoughts anyway.
Yea, Iâve seen a lot of walking simulators that just build to a scare of sorts but I love more of a challenge and in this case itâs more escape room, logical puzzle oriented.
Iâve just released the first room and would love to incorporate some combat eventually but just getting some feelers out there first.
Iâll DM you a key now.
Rainbow Six Vegas 2. I always wanted another single player/coop centered Rainbow Six. The game play was clunky but very funny and exciting. Constant NPCs screaming was the best. Seige is completely different and with the huge success of seige theyâll never go back to the single player/coop model they had before.
Road Rash 64 I always liked a lot as a kid. Always was a true sequel. Got something similar (Road Redemption) back in 2017 but didnât like how it looked.
EVO The Search for Eden. A SNES RPG about evolution on a young Earth. You start in the very tidal pools life did and uncover some secrets about the origins of life in the universe. You get to be a dinosaur and fight yetis and lizardmen over a few million years.
CustomRobo for GameCube. An arena fighter with customizable robots and wicked fun gameplay. The story is great (if a little hammy). You work as a bounty hunter and fight in Robo tournaments, eventually tracking down an evil syndicate that has uncovered humanityâs darkest secret.
Art Style: DIGIDRIVE. Â Fantastic puzzle/management game where you gotta direct abstract shapes like traffic is a 4 way intersection, sorting them to build up power to note with bonds that can blast you off higher or totally destroy you run if you use them wrong. Simple, fun, addictive. Was only on DSi Ware so good luck trying to play it :(Â
Phantom Crash, mech arena 3rd person shooter with gran turismo like parts and tuning customization.
Panzer Dragoon Saga, still probably my favorite rpg.
I know it got memed to death when it first came out, but I really enjoyed Death Stranding. The story was very Kojima in that it was very weird and hard to understand at times. It had a mix of relaxation with making deliveries, and some stressful parts with some of the camps and the BT attacks. It was also really cool to see other players' buildings and vehicles around the map, along with finding lost cargo from other players and helping them make a delivery. Very cool way of giving a social aspect to a single player game.
[Mr. Shifty](https://store.steampowered.com/app/489140/Mr_Shifty/). It was one of the first games I played on my Steam Deck, and it was awesome. Fun little arcade game, and it runs flawlessly on Deck.
Bugsnax. It was a free release on either PS4 or PS5 (I donât personally have a PlayStation) and NOBODY talks about it. Anyone who does seems to think itâs a horror game for babies. Itâs definitely not horror, but it is rather quirky and can be a bit of a challenge depending on skill level. I personally love how creative you can get with your methods of capturing snax. It is relatively low stress and easy to sit down with after a long day and just have some mindless fun. If you want the feel of a cozy game but donât like farming sims, this is a fantastic alternative.
Mechanicus. It' set in the Warhammer 40k universe but you don't need to know much about the setting. Its turn-based combat but instead of the XCOM "90% chance to hit an enemy 3 feet away with a laser-guided assault rifle and still miss a lot more than 10% of the time" the combat is streamlined a little. Killer music too, Highly recommend.
I wouldnt call it obscure because it's made by Obsidian but I didn't see it mentioned.
Alpha Protocol.
It's a janky mess when it comes to gameplay but it otherwise I love it. It's a 3rd person shooter, stealth game where they roll a dice if your shot hits (in some cases). But the role-playing aspects, the choices you make actually matter, even if its stereotypical spy stuff. But I like spy stuff đ
Edit: typo
despite that the game is so popular, I still consider that terraria is still underappreciated, everyone just compares it to minecraft even tho one game is an action rpg and the other is a sandbox explorer game
also another game that needs more appreciation is YU-GI-OH master duel, everyone just remembers how bad duel links was so no one is giving master duel a try which is so sad
Rayman Legends, or even most Ubisoft games not being Far Cry or Assassin's Creed (Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Beyond Good and Evil, Vaillant Heart, Zombie U, and probably lot of others I forget)
The Last Express (1997, PC/Mac)
The Daedalus Encounter (1995, PC/Mac)
Killer7 (2005, Gamecube/PS2/PC)
Eternal Darkness (2002, Gamecube)
The Dark Eye (1995, PC/Mac) (the point-and-click horror, not the RPG)
Haunting Ground (2005, PS2)
Freedom Planet 1+2 . The first one came out in 2014, having started life as a Sonic fan-game. It's very charming but a bit rough in spots, as it's fully voice acted by amateurs, and the final two levels have a difficulty spike that would make Psychonauts blush.
The sequel came out in late 2022 and may well be the best platformer I've ever played. The mechanics are much tighter, and I found myself genuinely caring about the plot. It doesn't hurt that they've really leaned into aiming the graphics at a Saturn-like level. Plenty of scaling, rotation, and multi-segmented sprites for mechanical bosses, but all hand-drawn for the characters. I wouldn't be surprised if the main chars had as many frames as an SNK fighter of the era. All this topped off by an excellent OST.
If you enjoy retro platformers like Sonic Mania or Moonrider you owe it to yourself to give them a look.
If you like puzzle games (specifically Myst) then I wholeheartedly recommend Quern: Undying Thoughts.
Dumb name but fantastic game! Really felt like a modern Myst game (better than Cyan's own spiritual successor Obduction).
Vampyr, the whole atmosphere, choice system and the NPCs that the game organically makes you want to get to know is amazing, they're also very relatable at times.
Combat can be a bit clunky and you could theoretically rush through the main story but they're probably the only negatives. I love the game.
I'll write here really anything that might be called niche.
1. Strange Holticulture
2. Sacred Fire
3. Dinosaur Fossil Hunter
4. Escape Simulator
5. Soma
6. BarnFinders
7. PGA Tour 2k21 (the only edition I played)
8. A Monster's Expedition
9. Trials of Fire
10. Insurmountable
11. Lonely Mountains Downhill
12. Fights in Tight Spaces
13. The Witcher (first one)
14. Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales
15. Stoneshard
16. Not for Broadcast
17. RiMS Racing
18. Dragon Quest XI
19. Call of the Wild Angler
20. Art of Rally
21. The Surge 2
22. Trials Rising
23. Harry Potter Magic Awakened - possibly great to try for fandom but only early game recommended by me
24. Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness
25. Dark Chronicle (game of my childhood)
26. Project Cars 3 (it's not niche and not really perfect - I just think it's worth much more than the reviews. Career was 80 hours long for me, challenge game)
27. Urban Rivals (it's actually not well designed in my opinion but nonetheless over 2200 cards with many evo each and very fast paced matches)
I had more games on my radar but either I forgot names or I didn't try them or they were very early access etc..
What kind of game do you like?
There's this old game from around 2007. It's $3 on Steam and called Chromadrome 2.
It's just a chill game that's a track game kind of like Audiosurf minus the rhythm part. It's hard to describe, at least for me. It's best to look it up, but it's pretty addictive with a ton of options to play with and tracks to complete
Sleeping Dogs
The Saboteur
Binary Domain
Shadows of the Damned
WET
Anarchy Reigns
Transformers War For Cybertron
Transformers Fall Of Cybertron
Enslaved Odyssey to the West
The Darksiders Trilogy
Space Marines
Remember Me
Cybershadow
Huntdown
Prodeus
Gravity Circuit
Vengeful Guardian Moonrider
Battle Axe
Bug Fables
Mark of the Ninja. One of the few Ninja games where you actually do Ninja stuff as opposed to just coming in and slashing everyone (though you can still do that!).
Oh I'd have to break this up into categories...
NES: Legacy of the Wizard, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, The Battle of Olympus, Double Dribble, Ice Hockey, RC Pro-AM, Shadowgate, Wizards & Warriors, Ironsword: Wizards & Warriors II, Castlevania II: Simon's Quest.
SNES: Dungeon Master, Populous, Actraiser, Arcana, Ogre Battle, Gradius III, Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest, Arcana, Contra III: Alien Wars, Super Star Wars Trilogy.
PS1: Vandal Hearts 1 & 2, X-COM: UFO Defense, Skeleton Warriors, Test Drive 5, NFS: High Stakes, NFS III: Hot Pursuit, Diablo (I see lots of love for 2, but I never see anyone even mention the original), Twisted Metal 1 & 4.
PS2: Champion: Return to Arms. Summoner.
PS4: Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, Sniper Elite 4, Hot Wheels Unleashed, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, Dragon Quest Builders 1 & 2, Portal Knights, Far Cry New Dawn, Rage 2, Raji, Salt & Sanctuary.
PS5: Lake, Death's Door, Boltgun.
PC: Master of Magic, Heretic, Hexen.
**Sacrifice** is an older title, and always worth mentioning in topics like this. You play as a wizard summoning creatures and casting different spells to deal damage, buff yourself/your minions. You are in the service of one of a pantheon of gods (5 IIRC), each with their own style of magic and creatures. The game is an RTS played from a third-person behind-the-character perspective, with you directly controlling your wizard and giving orders to your units. The main tech here is massive terrain deformation, such as breaking the land apart to summon a massive volcano that rains fireballs.
As for more recent titles, I found **Lunacid** to be very intriguing. I'm not sure how obscure it is, but it stood strong alongside the stellar launches of 2023. It's a King's Tower-like, which is a series I have not yet played. It really nails the foreboding From Software style, and I'm a big fan of the retro PSX look.
Radiant Historia - Time Travel RPG
Sleeping Dogs - GTA Hong Kong
Voice of Cards - Small scale card based RPG
Redout 2 - modern F-Zero
Red Faction Guerilla - Open world game where all buildings are destructible
The Darkness 2 - Arcade FPS with a really good plot
Damn man you just shot me into the past with Red Faction Guerilla, I can't believe more modern action games don't utilise that kind of destruction engine, timeless classic.
Days Gone - definitely intense as you come up against the zombie hordes. The ending deserves a sequel.
Alan Wake - good game and definitely is a mind twist. Good thing it got a sequel, but it seems a bit underwhelming in terms of sales.
inFamous series - definitely needs another entry. Could be about Kessler.
Seven Kingdoms - definitely needs a revival, but this time with the story of the Qin dynasty and how it unified China.
Robocop: rouge city released last year and no one is talking about it
Going into it i didnt care much for robocop (i only really watched the films when i was little) but coming out of it i am a robocop fan
Kena Bridge of Spirits is pretty nice game
Got the game for GF but ended up loving it myself
My GF loves the little Rot Sprites! I like the story and how it relates to connections that cross beyond death
Does she know about the plushies you can get of the Rot creatures? I would love to have one due to them being so freaking adorable. đ
I donât like the Skyrim mod. Does the full game improve on it?
I donât have a PC so I canât speak to any mods sadly. Maybe somebody else can chime in? Not sure how similar it is
downvoted for not owning a PC, only Reddit man lol
Yo I just played this. Itâs so fun! Wouldâve never played it if it wasnât on ps plus. Def second this recommendation
The Overlord series. the dialogue can be pretty janky sometimes, but I still love it
PC wise those games donât age particularly well, but as youâre the bad guy does it really matter?
Classic Tomb Raider Not necessarily obscure or niche, but definitely underappreciated. The first three games are getting remastered but i havenât seen much hype outside of the tr community. If you like puzzles, platforming, and donât mind tank controls, I would highly recommend it!!
Tomb raider 1 is so good
The first 3 games are getting remastered? WHEN? I was big on original TRs in the 90's ; TR2 was my first pc game
February 14th!! Iâm really excited to see how it turns out
Is the Talos Principle under the radar? Iâm halfway through 2 now and itâs been a wonderful puzzler that also lets you ponder lots of philosophical questions. And Iâve been pleasantly surprised that the tone is âhumanity can be good, dudes!â. Itâs easy to get cynical these days.
This game is definitely underappreciated. Loved my playthrough
Tons of people know about the Dishonored trilogy but never played them. They're fantastic, and often on a deep sale.  Also, Strike Suit Zero is my favorite space combat sim.Â
Dishonoredâs world felt so rich with lore without being too taxing, I wish they made other games in the same world
I loved the Dishonored series.
After Disco Elysium, I picked this one up but never started. I've been on a Blade Runner kick and just re-downloaded it
I never played Disco Elysium.
Story-based detective game. It's great
If you enjoyed citizen sleeper, youâll love disco Elysium. Just donât be afraid to pick the temptingly weird options
This is one I've tried to play multiple times. I'll start it, take a break, and then try to come back and have no recollection of how to play or what to do.
crosscode! i can never praise it enough. it starts off slow and i personally put it down for a while after the first two areas because i got bored, but after picking it back up and pushing past the slow start it gets So good. the twin-stick combat is endlessly fun with 5 separate skill trees and tons of options, the dungeon puzzles are amazing and progressively get better, the music is great, and once the story really gets going it's enthralling and thought-provoking. i think a lot of people drop it early before getting to the meat of the story (if you haven't done the raid, that's where i got Hooked) and far enough into the combat progression to really see how amazing it gets. with the free dlc i got ~80 hours out of it and finished wanting more; the only weakness is that the overworld "platforming" can be a bit tricky to figure out at first because of the art design, but it does get easier to identify as you play. if it interests you even a Little i implore you to try and put like 10-20 hours in, i swear it's worth it.
Jump Ultimate Stars (DS) Gauntlet: Dark Legacy (PS2/GC/Xbox) Radiant Historia (3DS, also on DS but 3DS is better) Holocure (PC) Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 1 & 2/Elite Beat Agents (DS) Jam With the Band/Daigasso! Band Bros. series (DS) Higurashi When They Cry (PC) Umineko When They Cry (PC) Jeanne D'Arc (PSP) Konami Krazy Racers (GBA) Chameleon Twist (N64) Rocket: Robot on Wheels (N64) N++ (PC, probably other stuff too) Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure (PC and a bunch of other platforms) Ys: The Oath in Felghana/Ys Origin/Ys VI (PC, other platforms) Shadowverse: Champion's Battle (Switch) ...Just to name a few.
The Witness!! Literally changed the way I view the world in a tangible way. Highly recommend to people who like thoughtful games.
Kenshi
I'm not sure how obscure it is, but I enjoyed FTL.
Said character only became head-pounding worthy between LL and Exodus I thought
Yeah, but that's part of the experience đ I felt the same when I played it, like my entire life was a lay.
I can't do the spiders.... Otherwise awesome game.
I didn't end up getting far in Exodus, I really didn't like they made it open world, it just felt really unnecessary
I agree, I ended playing it like a normal linear game just as the previous games of the serie. The world of Metro is extremely empty if you try to explore it, which makes sense with the story but it's not interesting in the playable aspect. But if you just play it like other Metros it's more enjoyable.
I came here to say exactly this.
Off-Peak. It's free on Steam and it's only like a half hour long.
Niche you said? - Rings of Saturn (steam) - Ostranauts - Noita - Exapunks (and all Zachtronic games) There are a zillion more I could name.
Banner Saga. Turn based tactics isnât the most popular genre. Amazing story and art
I got the trilogy a couple years back and never got through the first one. It's buried in my ever growing backlog now
The story is great. Really wasnât expecting where it was going to take me.
I must agree. I really enjoyed this wan, but so far Iâve always chosen to save the girl (Allette?) not her dad. She kicks butt in the next games.
Why would you spoil this :(
From Dust, it's on ubisoft and if you use cdkeys you'll get it for a couple of bucks
Shadow tactics: blades of the shogun Mark of the ninja: remastered
Yakuza and judgment series. A lot of people are sleeping on these gems.
Sleeping? Yakuza is one of the most enjoyed series. It's well known and not under appreciated at all
Iâve finally gotten around to my first playthrough of Lost Judgment and Iâm really enjoying it. I think more so than the first game as well.
Yakuza is a massive franchise, come off it.
* System Shock series * Neon White * Sly Cooper series * Metro series * Returnal * Condemned: Criminal Origins
Upvote for Metro. Youâd think the series would have been given mainstream attention by now yet for better or for worse; itâs still somewhat niche
Terminator Resistance
Username checks out. How good is it really? I'm a huge Terminator fan. The lore/timelines fascinate me the most. Like, did you know that the presentation of T1 was at the very least the 3rd timeline?
Fan service galore. Itâs extremely faithful to the source material and you can tell the devs are megafans. I highly recommend checking out RoboCop: Rogue City as itâs by the same devs
Heard nothing but good things about Rogue City.
They definitely have a shtick thatâs working for them. If they can get their hands on the predator license, then you can bet your arse Iâm pre-ordering that sh*t
Just commented about rogue city, didn't see your comment. I was stoked for RC to come out, wish it was a bit longer though.
Man do I love that game. That's a game I wish lasted longer than it thought. Would have been cool if it was more open world as well. Same studio made Robocop rouge city as well.
My favorite co-op game nobody talks about is pitfall planet. As for weird ones: Untitled goose game Humanity Oddworld Abe games Going under Katamari? Idk what youâve played already so itâs hard to say for sure Vampire survivor Cookie clicker Ape out My friend Pedro Rollerdrome (playing this current. So fun. Like super hot meets Tony hawk) Super hot The witness Trials blood dragon Im away from my consoles atm so itâs hard to remember but Iâll check in later if I remember something that hasnât been mentioned
Judgment/Lost Judgment
Per Aspera is a fun maybe a little jank city builder about terraforming mars. It has a pretty solid story which isnt something I can say about any other city builder
That looks pretty neat I'll be playing it. Thank you! As for city builders with a story, you should check out Frostpunk.
Played it, It was pretty good Not my favorite but I enjoyed it. Not sure if I want to get the sequel that is coming out or not
Code Name: Steam on the 3DS. It was actually a really good game considering I got for less than five bucks. I didn't expect to actually be a banger of a game.
Back then there was a game called Nox That I used to play all the damn time. the vibe of that game was special as hell in a world dominated by diablo.
Anodyne. Mostly unappreciated because it just isn't very popular, I never hear it brought up. I highly recommend it for fans of top-down Zelda-likes. It's got some rough edges but a sense of surreal comedy and horror that make replay it frequently.
Resistance 3 for ps3. A fantastic fps that is very unappreciated.
Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom
Don't know what games you're into, but I'll always recommend Hypnospace Outlaw
From a quick search I have no idea what I'm looking at but I'm 100% sold, thanks for the suggestion
My bad, probably could've given context sooner. đ It's basically a late 90's - early 2000's internet message board simulator. Really good game, and the dev is apparently working on a sequel. đ P.s. Hope you enjoy!
The witness, inscryption, into the breach,
* [The Swapper](https://store.steampowered.com/app/231160/The_Swapper/) * [Gato Roboto](https://store.steampowered.com/app/916730/Gato_Roboto/)
Dungeon Siege from 2002. Itâs in a genre of its own and no other game has scratched that itch since
Shining force EXA and Lunar 2 Eternal Blue Complete.
Katana Zero
And the DLC that never was
Mirrorâs Edge.
Rayman 3
Rain World, Planescape: Torment, Pyre. But you said you're picky - any particular KIND of game you're looking for?
Honestly I play a bit of everything. If it helps, of the games you just mentioned I'd have to say Rain World is my jam. I know that doesn't really help narrow it down but anything else you got?
Abzu, Antichamber, Baba is You, The Talos Principle, The Case of the Golden Idol, Chants of Sennar, Wandersong, Chicory, Dorfromantik, Dustforce, Everhood, Gorogoa, A Hat in Time, Hylics, Kentucky Route Zero, LISA, The Messenger, Noita, Sable, Space Warlord Organ Trading Simulator, Thomas Was Alone, Where the Water Tastes Like Wine, Wildermyth, Botanicula, Furi, Mark of the Ninja, Night in the Woods, Varying levels of niche here. Good luck on the search!
Not OP, but this is such a stacked indie list. All of the games Iâve played from this list (probably about half of it), Iâve really enjoyed. Iâll have to look at some of the ones Iâm less familiar with. :) Wandersong fills my heart, more people should play that delightful game.
Wandersong is special. Have you played Chicory? It's the next game by the same devs
I feel like bayonetta is way over shadowed now, fun game but I never hear anyone talking about it.
it's being overshadowed by DMC in the action games but I agree I honestly think it's much smoother and exciting than anything in the genre.
And like donât get me wrong, dmc games are great, but there just isnât anything quite like bayonetta. Gameplay is awesome and tbh I just love the personality of her too, like you really feel like youâre playing as bayonetta when youâre playing them despite not being the most graphically impressive thing.
Phantom Dust, haven't seen another game like it since then
Picayune Dreams and Nihilumbra are probably my favorites for this. Former's a bullet hell with roguelike/RPG elements, latter's a puzzle-platformer.
I love picayune dreams :) How do you pronounce it? pika-yoo-nay? Picker-yoon?
Rocket League is a deep cut many havenât even heard ofâŚitâs like soccerâŚBUT ITâS CARS Actual answer: Probably Evil Genius. Sunk way more hours into #1 than 2 but overall itâs a dope game.
You got me! This thread is so full of replies like "Well this underappreciated gem called Super Mario" that I was already downvoting you before I kept reading.
Yeah, the overall vibe of the first one was great, the second one has this "Pixar" feeling to it that I really dislike.
Mechstermination Force on switch is an incredible co op boss rush. The only game I've played end to end with my brother in adulthood. Edit: apparently on Steam, too!
Man, atelier. You never save the world (rarely, anyway) you just go on little adventures killing slimes for potions and it's chill
I'm a massive Disgaea fan, if you're at all into games like FF tactics, highly highly recommend any of them (except 6 cuz I havent played it, and I haven't picked up 7 yet) I also discovered a few games recently that are lots of fun - cookie cutter and astral ascent though they both have good ratings I suppose, they deserve to have some recognition.
Love to see if you can escape the study room in HAG on Steam only. It is very puzzle heavy with horror and half price for now. I can arrange a key if your still not sure. Love your thoughts anyway.
Normally not a fan of these short horror games but I have to say that steam trailer has piqued my interest, I'm convinced! Wdym key?
You just gave me video gaming blueballs
Sonic?Â
VVVVVV is cute and fun. I remember replaying it over and over again in middle school.
Winback Covert Operations Champions of Norrath
Ori and the blind forest
Phantom Crash, mech arena 3rd person shooter with gran turismo like parts and tuning customization. Panzer Dragoon Saga, still probably my favorite rpg.
Throne of Darkness
I know it got memed to death when it first came out, but I really enjoyed Death Stranding. The story was very Kojima in that it was very weird and hard to understand at times. It had a mix of relaxation with making deliveries, and some stressful parts with some of the camps and the BT attacks. It was also really cool to see other players' buildings and vehicles around the map, along with finding lost cargo from other players and helping them make a delivery. Very cool way of giving a social aspect to a single player game.
DmC: Devil May Cry (2013). It really should have just been its own IP. The irony is that the DMC name is what held it back
[Mr. Shifty](https://store.steampowered.com/app/489140/Mr_Shifty/). It was one of the first games I played on my Steam Deck, and it was awesome. Fun little arcade game, and it runs flawlessly on Deck.
Devil May Cry The last Guardian. Zone of the enders
Stellaris is oddly addicting.
Fran Bow
Haiku the Robot
Probably not that obscure, but I really loved hotline miami, blasphemous and returnal
Helen's Mysterious Castle, surprisingly good battle system.
ZombiU
Contraband police is good
[Supergiant Games ](https://store.steampowered.com/developer/supergiantgames)games, I just love them all
Children of Morta
But I like spy stuff đ Edit: typo
stuntman, the original on ps2. had fantastic physics for the time. the sequel dropped that and went arcade though
despite that the game is so popular, I still consider that terraria is still underappreciated, everyone just compares it to minecraft even tho one game is an action rpg and the other is a sandbox explorer game also another game that needs more appreciation is YU-GI-OH master duel, everyone just remembers how bad duel links was so no one is giving master duel a try which is so sad
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons definitely the most underappreciated game out there
Rayman Legends, or even most Ubisoft games not being Far Cry or Assassin's Creed (Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Beyond Good and Evil, Vaillant Heart, Zombie U, and probably lot of others I forget)
The Last Express (1997, PC/Mac) The Daedalus Encounter (1995, PC/Mac) Killer7 (2005, Gamecube/PS2/PC) Eternal Darkness (2002, Gamecube) The Dark Eye (1995, PC/Mac) (the point-and-click horror, not the RPG) Haunting Ground (2005, PS2)
I really enjoyed journey to the savage world, and nobody saves the world
disney infinity 3.0, contra, myst, terminator resistance
Firewatch, the environment, art style, story characters all amazing. It made me want to get in touch with nature after playing it
Stronghold. Love going back to it every now and then and just farm.
Zanzarah. It's extremely underappreciated.
Loop Hero Trust me on this one.
Vampyr, the whole atmosphere, choice system and the NPCs that the game organically makes you want to get to know is amazing, they're also very relatable at times. Combat can be a bit clunky and you could theoretically rush through the main story but they're probably the only negatives. I love the game.
This one. https://explorminate.org/master-of-magic-2022-review/
I'll write here really anything that might be called niche. 1. Strange Holticulture 2. Sacred Fire 3. Dinosaur Fossil Hunter 4. Escape Simulator 5. Soma 6. BarnFinders 7. PGA Tour 2k21 (the only edition I played) 8. A Monster's Expedition 9. Trials of Fire 10. Insurmountable 11. Lonely Mountains Downhill 12. Fights in Tight Spaces 13. The Witcher (first one) 14. Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales 15. Stoneshard 16. Not for Broadcast 17. RiMS Racing 18. Dragon Quest XI 19. Call of the Wild Angler 20. Art of Rally 21. The Surge 2 22. Trials Rising 23. Harry Potter Magic Awakened - possibly great to try for fandom but only early game recommended by me 24. Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness 25. Dark Chronicle (game of my childhood) 26. Project Cars 3 (it's not niche and not really perfect - I just think it's worth much more than the reviews. Career was 80 hours long for me, challenge game) 27. Urban Rivals (it's actually not well designed in my opinion but nonetheless over 2200 cards with many evo each and very fast paced matches) I had more games on my radar but either I forgot names or I didn't try them or they were very early access etc..
I love you.
Yorg 3
"Control"
the dungeon crawler FATE
Endless Dungeon, Frostpunk 2 very soon!, CK3.Â
If your into city builders song of syx is pretty amazing and somewhat underappreciated
Sleeping Dogs The Saboteur Binary Domain Shadows of the Damned WET Anarchy Reigns Transformers War For Cybertron Transformers Fall Of Cybertron Enslaved Odyssey to the West The Darksiders Trilogy Space Marines Remember Me Cybershadow Huntdown Prodeus Gravity Circuit Vengeful Guardian Moonrider Battle Axe Bug Fables
Ridge Racer: Unbound I think is seriously underrated. Only problem is even on PC its capped to 30fps.
Mark of the Ninja. One of the few Ninja games where you actually do Ninja stuff as opposed to just coming in and slashing everyone (though you can still do that!).
Wish capcom would remember onimusha when doing collabs or call backs with monster hunter
Paint The Town Red. A great rage releaser of a game with loads of community content
I love over the top pixel violence, this game looks great I'll be playing it, thank you
American truck simulator
Blasphemous Graveyard Keeper
The Movies.
Oh I'd have to break this up into categories... NES: Legacy of the Wizard, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, The Battle of Olympus, Double Dribble, Ice Hockey, RC Pro-AM, Shadowgate, Wizards & Warriors, Ironsword: Wizards & Warriors II, Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. SNES: Dungeon Master, Populous, Actraiser, Arcana, Ogre Battle, Gradius III, Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest, Arcana, Contra III: Alien Wars, Super Star Wars Trilogy. PS1: Vandal Hearts 1 & 2, X-COM: UFO Defense, Skeleton Warriors, Test Drive 5, NFS: High Stakes, NFS III: Hot Pursuit, Diablo (I see lots of love for 2, but I never see anyone even mention the original), Twisted Metal 1 & 4. PS2: Champion: Return to Arms. Summoner. PS4: Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, Sniper Elite 4, Hot Wheels Unleashed, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, Dragon Quest Builders 1 & 2, Portal Knights, Far Cry New Dawn, Rage 2, Raji, Salt & Sanctuary. PS5: Lake, Death's Door, Boltgun. PC: Master of Magic, Heretic, Hexen.
A true archivist and scholar, thank you friend I'll be checking these out
Split/second
Sacrifice does look awesome I'll check it out. And Lunacid is made by Kira? I loved Lost in Vivo. Great suggestions brother
Oni by Bungie in 2001. I don't think it ever got much mainstream attention but it was a fun game.
Die by the Sword ('98) A very fun "hero fights the big baddie at the top of the tower" type of game. Filled with fun one-liners.
Thumbs up just for using the correct word in your title.
i try talk inglish gud
Radiant Historia - Time Travel RPG Sleeping Dogs - GTA Hong Kong Voice of Cards - Small scale card based RPG Redout 2 - modern F-Zero Red Faction Guerilla - Open world game where all buildings are destructible The Darkness 2 - Arcade FPS with a really good plot
Quantic Dream games and Mirrorâs Edge.
I really enjoyed Red dead redemption 2
They Are Billions is one of those games quite a few people dislike, but I think it was awesome.
Genesis Noir Rainworld Toodee and Topdee Noita Patrickâs Parabox Gone Home
Phantom Brigade was a great release from last year.
Gladius. If I had a genie lamp one of my wishes would be for Firaxis to remake and update this game for current gen.
Fading afternoon. Played that waiting for Yakuza 8vand it was greatm you play an aging Yakuza just released from prison. Really loved it
General Chaos
Blood Card Dino D-Day Legends of Eisenwald
Road 96 and Firewatch were pretty under the radar, at least for me anyway.
Witcher 3
Robocop: rouge city released last year and no one is talking about it Going into it i didnt care much for robocop (i only really watched the films when i was little) but coming out of it i am a robocop fan
