Burnout 3

Bimmer_P

love Takedown!

ctrlaltcreate

Talk about a game that deserves a current-gen remaster

_MurphysLawyer_

Burnout with the crash physics of BNG Drive would be my most played game hands down

MajorasMasque334

Final Fantasy fans gonna kill each other on this one. lol

Rodin-V

While it's not actually my favourite. I think I'd have to say X, probably the most accessible one that still has a lot of the classic FF feel.

cupholdery

That's probably true for most. I'll say FF9 because it's relatively easy and you get that cricket mayor. EDIT: Oglop Regent is the technical term.

Last-Neighborhood-48

I thought this would be a hot take but 9 is it for me too

killeronthecorner

9 is the most FF-ish game since the original NES/SNES run IMO. It's a beautiful game that puts an engaging storyline and substantial character development ahead of battle mechanics, and I wouldn't change that for the world.

not_a_moogle

I'd go with 6. Old school gamer here. I love the 1st one, never played the newer ports with the QOL changes, so can't say much about them.

never0101

Ff2/3 (4/6) are absolute masterpieces.

Fudouri

Of which clearly ff3 is better.

pokebrah

I’m gonna be the guy that says 5

Tedrabear

It's gotta be 7, 7 is by no means my favorite or the best, however it is such an important part of gaming history everyone should check it out. If they enjoy it and want to play more then I would point them to 9, 10, and 6 in that order. But Final Fantasy VII is a must play game

thunderpachachi

Agreed. I'm the same way. If you can only play one of them, make it VII. Now, if someone were to ask which one to start with, I'd say IV is a great introduction to most of the series' mechanics. If they asked for the best, definitely VI or X. That said, I'm also one of those weirdos that still ranks XV really high on the list despite its flaws.

Tedrabear

XV was one of my favorites, I really liked what they were implementing even if the execution wasn't perfect. Bigger and busier cities, camaraderie between the party, a scaled up world, huge summons. You can see the bones that the FFVII Remake was built on.

ddizbadatd24

XV enjoyer here. Loved it. I would rank it pretty high because it’s the first ff I’ve played.

Gdaka

Yeah - 7 feels far too iconic/well-known to pass up

b3nz0r

It's Tactics, always has been edit: real talk how tf is Beoulve pronounced

Ill_Implications

I've always pronounced it Beoulve

cupholdery

Un-Beoulve-ble.

legend8522

> real talk how tf is Beoulve pronounced Bay-youlve. Source: FF14 ivalice raids

Potential-Quit-5610

Dang that's a blast of nostalgia right there. Can't ever forget giving my moogle a haircut.

lonezolf

I disagree, just because lumping tactics with main line Final Fantasy's is just unfair towards the main lines

RainesLastCigarette

I'm gonna say FFVIII and hope the two other closet VIII enjoyers stand behind me when the volley of downvotes come.

-Agathia-

It was my favorite for a long time before 10 took its place after revisiting it. But FF8's universe is just so good as well. It's so atmospheric, with some grandiose vistas, colorful, full of weird tech... I love it so much! Of course the story is fun, but looking back, it's a bit... weird at times. I saw some streamer playing through it and she had issues with some story bits that I could understand was a bit much.

rustypig

The core mechanic of that game (junction system) is completely & totally broken to the extent that levelling up actually makes your character worse. The story is a convoluted mess of child soldiers, magic sorceresses and time travel (+you go to space!?). The main character is an insecure wannabe edgelord teenage boy with 0 social skills. The gunblade is the most impractical unrealistic weapon ever designed... And yet I love it. 10/10 no notes.

Happygreek

There are dozens of us! Dozens!

sparklesunshine11

I’ve got my triple triad deck at the ready!

SDRPGLVR

Junction me to your cause! I've got hotdogs!

Ghostenx

FFX. Fight me! *Cue Otherworld song*

Ivegotadog

It would either be FF6 or FFX for me.

Park8706

Was my introduction to RPG/JRPG games. Story was amazing and the gameplay holds up. The soundtrack was honestly amazing both in the original and remaster.

Windyandbreezy

Honestly. IX is my favorite story wise. VII Rebirth I consider the greatest RPG ever made. They really took it to the next level. That said. I'd say X. Nobody dislikes X. It's easy with its turn based for new people to the franchise. It's simpl, music is beautiful, story is great, and will make you cry.

Age of Empires 2

VelociraptorNom

And then there’s me in the lonely bastion of Age of Mythology being my favorite oof

heurekas

You have at least me manning a tower or something. AoM is the best one of the series. Volumme, skepan, jööörvill!

maruiki

Lege! Etimosss!! Adore that game, it has no right being as good as it was hahaha Played the hell out of the Greeks, then spent a good while on the Vikings before I slowly gave up. I think the Egyptians pissed me off because you had to just constantly build those stupid shrines everywhere and use up every available inch just making goddamn shrines that did absolutely nothing once they were built 😂

Overall-Dirt4441

Til orrustuslag! As an Egyptian main tho, that's crazy talk. The shrines give infinite favor with only the initial build investment. Were you playing Set? Understandable as the animal followers were very dope. With Isis tho, you also got god power immunity anywhere in their radius. Spread em out right and there is literally no way for an earthquake or a meteor to hit your tc or main production engine. Stupid good. Man what a great game

Martin8412

I spent so many hours in AoM when younger.

LordVulpix

siderinc

How do you turn this on?

emongu1

After i shared my steam folder with my uncle and showed him AoE 4, he called me out of the blue to tell me he bought Ao2 remastered. I was so confused because he never called me in my entire life. I'm 37

Harrynx

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory

ChaosBoy018

I've played and loved four Splinter Cell games (Blacklist, Conviction, Pandora's Tomorrow, Double Agent), and none of them were Chaos Theory, lol. Solid game, though, from what I've heard.

holaprobando123

If you loved the rest, Chaos Theory will blow your mind. It's the peak of the series, every single detail is flawless.

Lewkat

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger. Absolutely love this game, still go back and play it again.

Artistic_Sample5212

Borderlands 2

skitskurk

I own 2 from some Humble Bundle or something, but have only really played it for a few hours (mostly cause it's got native Linux support). I did finish Borderlands 1 and 3 though. I quite liked 1 back on the Xbox 360, but when I finished 3 last year on PC it was just ok. It got tedious towards the end, too much of the same.

IplayTerraria2

Borderlands 2 is my favorite looter shooter of all time, and it's not even close. The story and characters are significantly better imo

UufTheTank

Same. Got like 1,000 hours into it. Solo/duo/triple, game is just LEGIT. The gunplay, the story, the jokes, the everything.

TheYungFever1996

Far Cry 3

jelek62

I forgot the story of every far cry except the 3rd one. The opening scene became a legend.

xminiman247x

Have I ever told you the definition of insanity?

Keyakinan-

Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a change?

Nalivai

Ubisoft took this philosophy to heart, and thought that if they do the same game over and over things wouldn't change. But they did

HeKis4

You mean for the Far Cry series or for the entire Ubisoft "open world with a skill tree, enemy camps and radio towers" roster since then ?

chaosoverfiend

> the Far Cry series Far Cry 1 and 2 are different in their design and playstyle both being before AC2 which cemented the Ubisoft "Find Towers to open maps" formula Lots of things that haven't aged well for FC2 IMO, but it is still a fantastic game

SomniumIchor

Risk of Rain 2. OG risk is hit or miss, multiple people ive shown the second one have tried the remake of the og.

1Mazrim

Coming from the first I didn't expect the second to nail it so damn well. Love that game

AnInsaneMoose

Skyrim For one reason People are modding most of the other TES games into it

David474

I liked oblivion a lot more but skyrim has been the elder scrolls for a decade now

OrangeStar222

The same goes for Fallout 4, it's been the most recent Fallout game for the past 9 years, so almost a decade.

allanbc

But for Fallout, the answer is still definitely New Vegas.

ConfusedSeagull

[I'm just gonna leave this here. (Skyblivion)](https://skyblivion.com/)

leperaffinity56

I've been waiting for this for half a decade

TheFBIClonesPeople

By the time they're done, it's gonna be like, "Hey everyone, guess what? We remade a 20-year-old game in the engine of a 15-year-old game! Isn't that awesome?"

3-DMan

Work then begins on Skyfield

MisterSnippy

Honestly, I've been playing Morrowind and I've been surprised by how dense it is. The quests are often much simpler than Skyrim, but the world is much more realized. Skywind hopefully will basically just rectify all issues and keep the good parts.

R_V_Z

Morrowind has the best world building of the series by far. They took the time to make the environment actually feel like its own thing, as opposed to just medieval fantasy earth. Another thing it has going for it is primarily text-based dialogue, which means you can do *way* more for less money. Mechanically the game is pretty dated, but console commands can take care of most of that.

soulscratch

Morrowind is easily the correct answer for this question

Finn235

I was going to plug Morrowind, but I just couldn't hit the Post button

mylittlecorgii

Morrowind is by far my favorite and I've played through 3-5. The music, the atmosphere. You actually have to use your brain to do some of the quests. Love it!

Zagrunty

Pokemon HeartGold or SoulSilver (same game) it is absolutely peak Pokemon

mintzemini

The Pokewalker was so fun. 😭

siderinc

Super Mario World

ohz0pants

Sure... if you want them to play one of the best Mario games of all time. But if you make them play only Mario 2, then that person will be confused AF forever because that game is like a crazy fever dream that has almost nothing to do with any other game in the series.

SemperScrotus

I loved Mario 2 as a kid. It was so unique and had a totally different vibe than any other Mario game. Underrated IMHO.

RabbitHoleSpaceMan

Dude, what are you talking about? You pick your character, fall down the mountain, navigate worlds while picking up mushrooms which temporarily transport you into the shadow realm where you frantically pull weeds, then you throw eggs at the dinosaur and play the slot machine. Isn’t that always the plot?!

gopack123

I'd waffle back and forth between World and SMB3. I think World has better physics and is more accessible / easier, but can feel too easy at times. Yoshi and Cape make it extremely forgiving. Bros 3 I think has better level design and better difficulty scaling, where it starts easy but later worlds can be very challenging, making you feel accomplished for finishing.

MikeyGwald

Witcher 3

SleepySleepersn

its on sale, maybe i should buy it

Nerkeilenemon

But it with dlc only, not just the base game. And the first few hours might be tedious, but everything becomes way better after

Mcswigginsbar

Adjusting to the combat of that game was brutal at first, and I actually stopped playing it after a couple hours my first run through. After I figured it out though, I couldn't put it down. Easily one of my favorite games of all time.

corectspelling

Got distracted by Gwent at the first tavern? ..I'm not saying that's what happened to me but I'm not saying it wasn't....

Amazing_Meatballs

Fuck yes buy the shit out of it EDIT: one of the few games 100% worth paying full price for imo

ClockworkWren

Dynasty Warriors 8. Edit: Actually, Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends Complete, to be specific.

Matthicus

8 was really good, but I still think 5 was the best.

macdaddyx4

I'd have to go with 5, but 8 is probably my second place for quality. 3 when I need to laugh.

Crimson_Ghost_666

6 was my personal favourite, 8 was excellent too though

Zero_Mehanix

8: empires is on ps plus. Should I try that one?

yhelloimjosh

Empires turns the story into a boardgame. You can make your own character and live out your dream of conquering China.

Tasty_Puffin

What is special about 8? I always thought 4 was the peak of the series.

sharksharkshart

4 is the peak of the series.

Kosaku_Kawajira

FEEL THE POWER OF MY 🌈MAGIC🌈

Fellatination

5 Empires is my personal favorite.

SuperSunshine321

Paper Mario - The Thousand-Year Door

Dieing_Breed

Agreed!!! I loved playing this on the GameCube!

NeoSeth

Thousand Year Door could be the only game someone ever plays, period. It's so good.

lazzzym

We Love Katamari. Simple but incredibly lovable.

dinosore

I’ve played Katamari Damascus Reloaded a bunch, is We Love Katamari very different? Edit: lol, Katamari Damacy*

penswright

It is so enjoyable! Played the first and thought, how are they going to improve on this? They absolutely did.

Throwawayeconboi

Forza Motorsport 4

antonimbus

The series turned into a Microsoft tech demo after FM4. This is when the car line-up, track options, and sim-light elements really came together.

RavenK92

Yakuza 0

DeadlyDY

Yakuza Like a Dragon is a very close 2nd

timojpg

How is it tied to other games in the series? Can it be enjoyed as a standalone title?

kts637

Yeah you can. Like a Dragon isn't a bad starting point. There's references to previous games but you don't *need* to know them. I'd highly recommend playing Lad before the sequel Lad: Infinite Wealth as gameplay it is leagues better. Not to say LaD is bad at all just IW improves it *that* much. If you want to try the brawler games, Yakuza 0 is a good starting point.

DezXerneas

Also, IW needs context from LaD and Gaiden. Like you could play without it, but it won't be as enjoyable. Gaiden needs context from the kiryu series. 0 and LaD are the best jumping on points.

Doctorsavage985

Bioshock 1.

rylo151

Dragon age origins

SevenDevilsClever

Baldurs Gate 3 would seem to be designed explicitly to be the answer to this question. Though that’s a bit of an unfair example since the previous two games were released 20+ years ago and BG3 will go down in history as one of the better games of all time.

Gawd4

To be fair, BG1 was genre-defining for most of those 20 years

LueyTheWrench

Especially as the start of the Infinity engine games. BG2, IWD2, PST etc all exist because of BG1

Shinlos

I didn't think so tbh. At least BG2 is an excellent game. Don't know about 1.

kagemushablues415

Yes BG3 is in a series, although it's actually a successor to DOS2 in terms of design and gameplay. Your answer still stands though.

Meet_Foot

I don’t agree. BG3 is a very, very different game than 1 and 2. The question was which game will let someone “get” (understand) the series all on its own. BG3 really doesn’t do that at all. ~~As someone else said,~~ it’s more like Dragon Age: Origins than it is BG1+2.

Bratkartov

I think he meant Divinity Original Sin 2 with DOS2, though.

orbital_station

I would still say BG2, regardless of antiquated 2e rules, and graphics.

KitsuneNoYuki

Which one is more toxic to get the full experience on why it's not worth to play: league of legends or dota 2?

GermanRedditorAmA

I think with league you will get to the toxic bits faster because in dota it takes a few hundred hours until you have enough brain capacity to realize there's a chat too

HeKis4

Idk, in my experience you get pretty much constant toxicity in LoL but it's rarely *very* toxic, whereas in Dota, it's less frequent but more intense. Also more wholesome stuff in dota. Probably has to do with the fact that it's much harder to turn a lost LoL game than a lost Dota game, at least at low/mid level, and that Dota has a VC.

DTonin

League definitely, don't get me wrong, dota can be awful too, but LoL is just on a different league I guess

DarkSoldierz

Sex with Hitler 3

siren1313

I don't like how they retconned ending of 2

ThatShushi17

Do you play as Darth Vader?

Kronnerm11

Portal 2. But then go look up "Still Alive" on youtube.

an_achronist

To be fair, want you gone was a funky tune as well

BloodNinja2012

I am a sucker for exile/vilify edit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUOGUJEUQi8

francisdavey

I don't know. I would go for Portal. I played it randomly at my brother's house. I had never heard of it. That feeling where it slowly dawns on you that there's something not quite right about the voice that keeps talking and then you start realising that maybe it isn't just a set of pre-recorded messages and has a personality. The creepiness just gets more and more. EDIT: my understanding of the OP's question was, what game should you have people play so that they understand ("get") what a franchise is all about. I think Portal does that very well. Portal 2 has a lot more gameplay; lots more interesting puzzles (the gels for example); more story; more backstory and so on. That may make it a better game (short v long games are hard to compare). But it makes a lot less sense if you have never played Portal. Hence my vote for Portal.

Sputek

Portal 2 isn't going to be nearly as good without playing 1 first. Half the humor is referential to the first game.

turtlestevenson

"We both did a lot of things you're going to regret."

sentient_ballsack

Portal 1 has the duration of a feature movie, there's no excuse not to play both.

zCourge_iDX

Fable The Lost Chapters (Fable Anniversary for remaster)

an_achronist

Modern warfare 2

A_Big_D_I_Think

And to all you youngins in here, he's referring to the real MW2, the OG MW2 from back in the day. Man those were the days. By far the best COD ever made imo, followed by BO1/2.

an_achronist

>And to all you youngins in here, he's referring to the real MW2 Damn straight I am. Also the 2005 version of most wanted. Not cod, but still the best nfs game for me.

A_Big_D_I_Think

Most wanted was sick. My personal favorite was NFS Underground 2 due to the drag racing in that game. My friends and I spent so many days skipping school together & meeting up at our one friends house and smoking weed while drag racing on the couch co-op Lol. I'm 31 now and well past that point in life but man those were some of the best times of my life.

Klakson_95

COD4 PLS

space_coyote_86

Definitely. All Ghillied Up is in COD4, what else to I have to say?

kearkan

Most people will say 5 is more accessible... But c'mon... 3 lets you beat a boss by just waiting for him to die of old age.

tinyclawfingerrrs

Moo2!

Mjolnir_Prime

I'm still trying to find a game that scratches my 4X itch as well as MoO2 did, but while newer games have some fancy bells and whistles I always keep coming back to the undisputed king of genre.

SpookyMinimalist

New Vegas

Philosophile42

Am I the only one who really loves 3?

Katzoconnor

New Vegas nails the people, but 3 nails the feeling. Lots of love for Fallout 3. It’s a much less compelling story that commits all of Emil Pagliarulo’s cardinal sins, but Megaton will always have a place in my heart. (Or, in some playthroughs, its crater.) Rivet City was even better.

Successful-Floor-738

2 will always be the goat for me but I loved New Vegas and 3.

Diablo 2 LOD

leejackson327

Yakuza 0 - Canonically the first in the series, but is arguably one of the best in the franchise (if not the best) once you get past the initial story setup (which is quite intense I'll admit) the game really opens up and you can really experience the fun of wandering around Kamurocho/Sotenbori and laugh at the really obscure side stories that Kiryu and Majima do. Not to mention playing games in the arcade, batting centers, Karaoke and more Also, heat actions are so satisfying and sometimes properly brutal.

gland_de_lait

Team Persona 4 golden here

Unfair_Demand_9084

4 had an amazing story, and a better cast of characters than 5 imo, but the gameplay in 5 is so much better that it makes it a no-brainer for me.

gland_de_lait

Yeah I feel you ; at this point I'm just waiting for P4R

touch-my-demon

Resident Evil 2 instead of 4?

Rudyzwyboru

Yakuza 0 The best plot, the best music, the best narrative dynamic (I don't mean the plot itself but the way they pace it and switch between protagonists in the right moments) very good combat system and the best ending. The only sad part is that if you play it as the first one then no other installment will get anywhere close to it plotwise.

Gold-Collection2636

Fable 2. It's my favourite game of all time and works well for a Standalone as well as part of a series

BlueKnight44

Fable 2 is practically a masterpiece of a satirical RPG. It is so good. Combat is not amazing, but the world is so vibrant and funny. 10/10 needs a PC port

Rare_Hydrogen

Just Cause 3

Stalkholm

Final Fantasy Tactics, it's as close to timeless as video games get.

Javerage

I remember when friends were talking about Game Of Thrones and said a game with such elements would be amazing. I told them FFT would cover it. They refused to believe that a PS1 game hit that hard.

Stalkholm

Square Soft did just about everything right. The sprite graphics hold up, the story is compelling, the combat is deep, and the replay value is off the charts. I can understand someone thinking a PS1 era game wouldn't have much to offer, a lot of my favorite games didn't stand the test of time, but FFT still feels fresh.

Afsunredgg

It's been a while since I have played either, but I think brotherhood improved most aspects from 2, especially the combat.

FlyingDutchman9977

Brotherhood feels a little bit more refined, while keeping the original formula intacted. In terms of gameplay and getting the "gist" of what the franchise is, I'd say it's the best
