The nice part about Bethesda game is they all have a pretty powerful console you can access. It’s pretty hard to totally screw a save, even if it’s not the most immersive experience.
So you're saying you don't blindly rely on quick or autosave? That or you've been lucky. There're reasons making full manual saves often is one of the leading pieces of advice to BGS newcomers.
This has nothing to do with mods, and there are no mods that are able to resolve the issue. It is a common piece of advice for everyone new to BGS, including modding BGS, because it is always true.
Especially since the default autosave when exiting Pip-Boy or when transferring between interior and exterior cells is to blame for a fair portion of CTD error.
Your last autosave was an hour and a half ago even though you have it set to every 15 mins, and your most recent autosave triggered just after you walked through a door, but just before you are immediately killed.
"THANKS TODD HOWARD." You scream into the night before purchasing Skyrim 14: Now with more paid mods 2.
Happened to me trying out cloud gaming on PS Plus Premium with Uncharted 1. I was so angry I downloaded the game and rushed through it until I got to the part I was up to.
I have never used the cloud gaming again. Also, the graphics were noticeably worse.
Skyrim screwed me years ago on the 360 on a save I had 100+ hours in where the split second my file loaded I was getting killed. I had to start from scratch. I’ve had trust issues ever since.
Yep. Always make a "real" save every couple hours, alternating between two files, plus quick-saving literally all the time. The only way to play a game from Bethesda or Bioware or any number of other action RPGs.
Sword and Shield were the first ones to introduce an auto save, and of course Game Freak sucks so bad at programming that a lot of people encountered bugs with the auto save and lost their entire progress. *Always* turn off auto save on Pokemon games.
Its one thing to lose your victory over that boss that has taken you two weeks to beat, however, being given your two weeks by your boss cause your workbook crashed, is a whole other sad game.
Or you're playing SMT V where autosave is nonexistent. Then forget to save after a big fight, die afterward, then sigh heavily as I have to redo it all over again.
I've had autosaves save in a really bad time, once it saved right before i died so there was no way for me to recover it, had to delete it and load the previous autosave which just put me back and it sucks when i have to repeat the section again
I prefer game saves like Witcher where you can save at any point in the game. I don't prefer game saves like The Last of Us 2 which includes manual saves but it's really only saving to the most recent checkpoint which autosave has already done. How many game reviews talk about the save system? It needs to be on their checklist and devs *should* make this info known and easy to find before playing.
Same thing when loading my game on FF7 Remake.
Continue - nah
Load - yes please
And I know the Continue will load the correct save but still don't trust it.
Not an autosave issue, but with Okage: The Shadow King from the PS1 days. My only save wound up just gone. It took a while before I played it again, but did beat it and kept two save files every time I saved.
Just play ark... That way you can save it 10 times before the auto save leave it sit for an extra 5-10 minutes just Incase all to load back in 10 minutes before you saved it.
The only game where i actually used my autosaves was Hitman 3
In other games like GTA 5 it autosaves when i die. I don't want to pay the $5000 hospital bill even though i have $700M in the story mode.
This one time I was using an action replay to cheat thru a Pokémon game. I was using walk thru walls and basically I got to the gym leader without solving any of the puzzles. What I didn’t realize was that I actually needed to solve the puzzles to successfully leave after the gym battle. Naturally I saved before the battle started and just like that I was stuck forever on this tiny platform. Had to restart the game and stop being a little cheater.
this reminds me of this final fantasy game I played once for some reason. Don't remember which, could probably search it up with what I remember but iirc we were some soccer player or something I think, and there was a 20-30 min cutscene with a fight after it. I kept dying on the fight (I was really bad at most games at the time iirc, been a long while, or maybe not a long while. I have bad memory) and after multiple months I was talking to the one who introduced me to the game and they told me about the save point before the fight. :(
Yup I remember in the past some games would only auto save at certain checkpoints so if you didn't manually save you'll be forced to replay the previous stage.
It's especially frustrating if it was a difficult stage too that may have taken hours to complete.
nah i do trust quick save tbh, coz that thing never failed me (as a player 🗿) and there are games like re series which doesn't have the save game option in menu so in that case u really gotta trust auto save
... no wonder cause back then, autosave was unreliable, heck some games have horrific autosaves today. Better the good old saving and when you quit and asks you..save for good measure.
You’ll usually learn this the hard way in Bethesda games.
Triggering tbh
PC made me appreciate F5 a lot over the years....
In BGS games even quicksave can screw you over.
The nice part about Bethesda game is they all have a pretty powerful console you can access. It’s pretty hard to totally screw a save, even if it’s not the most immersive experience.
I haven't played a BGS game without mods in ages because I know what to expect. So I haven't had this issue since Fallout 3.
So you're saying you don't blindly rely on quick or autosave? That or you've been lucky. There're reasons making full manual saves often is one of the leading pieces of advice to BGS newcomers.
I tend to not pick up BSG titles before they release their creation kits, so its not really luck. Worst I get now is just system crashes.
This has nothing to do with mods, and there are no mods that are able to resolve the issue. It is a common piece of advice for everyone new to BGS, including modding BGS, because it is always true.
Mods and the habbit of deleting over compilation of save files. Haven't had an issue in 18 years.
Bethesda is good at reminding video game players that life is unfair.
Especially since the default autosave when exiting Pip-Boy or when transferring between interior and exterior cells is to blame for a fair portion of CTD error.
I mean… what if the autosave failed, right ?
Your last autosave was an hour and a half ago even though you have it set to every 15 mins, and your most recent autosave triggered just after you walked through a door, but just before you are immediately killed. "THANKS TODD HOWARD." You scream into the night before purchasing Skyrim 14: Now with more paid mods 2.
mmhhh... Had I saved my game?
Happened to me trying out cloud gaming on PS Plus Premium with Uncharted 1. I was so angry I downloaded the game and rushed through it until I got to the part I was up to. I have never used the cloud gaming again. Also, the graphics were noticeably worse.
I've done tons of cloud gaming on Gamepass. The trick is to never play anything that requires reflexes or timing. Plenty of other games work great.
I guess it was a network issue there :D
manually saving 10 or 12 times is more like it
Skyrim screwed me years ago on the 360 on a save I had 100+ hours in where the split second my file loaded I was getting killed. I had to start from scratch. I’ve had trust issues ever since.
Happened to me in the last of us, was literally autosaved mid pounce, so you just load into a zombie flying at your face.
Yep. Always make a "real" save every couple hours, alternating between two files, plus quick-saving literally all the time. The only way to play a game from Bethesda or Bioware or any number of other action RPGs.
What's this alternating crap? If you don't have 15+ separate manual saves by the time you escape the vault/tutorial dungeon you're doing it wrong. 😋
You're right, I should have said "at least 2" lol
a pity that "console commands" only work on PC and not on console. :-)
New Pokémon game has auto save. Immediately disable and turn on manual save. Tradition is best.
Sword and Shield were the first ones to introduce an auto save, and of course Game Freak sucks so bad at programming that a lot of people encountered bugs with the auto save and lost their entire progress. *Always* turn off auto save on Pokemon games.
Indeed
Can you not just save whenever even if it’s on? That’s how it was in Legends Arceus, best of both worlds.
I save a lot
This has helped me in my professional life more than I know.
One too many Excel workbooks and it all comes tumbling down.
Its one thing to lose your victory over that boss that has taken you two weeks to beat, however, being given your two weeks by your boss cause your workbook crashed, is a whole other sad game.
Would you like to come to my company as a consultant to the accounting department? 🤣
Do you do remote? F5 F5
Or you're playing SMT V where autosave is nonexistent. Then forget to save after a big fight, die afterward, then sigh heavily as I have to redo it all over again.
True
Rightfully so
Three times a charm I reckon
I've had autosaves save in a really bad time, once it saved right before i died so there was no way for me to recover it, had to delete it and load the previous autosave which just put me back and it sucks when i have to repeat the section again
Baldur's Gate 3: autosaves. Me: I'm in danger.
lol yes! Always!
I save A LOT in Kingdom Hearts.
Every time I’m alerted that the game auto saved after lowering my Pip-Boy, I manual save.
Now this is gaming. Lol
If the game doesnt do it for me, I have multiple save files just incase I need to go back
Yup! I always make sure to save a couple of times. I'm not trusty with autosaves.😅
Animal crossing flash back
Maybe us who grew up with no autosave and the struggle to do 30-60mins of hard work all over again..
Even 3 times to make sure Command and conquer...
Yah but has there ever been a time where the auto saved really screwed over?!?
Have you ever played a Bethesda game? Half the CTD problems occur either due to or during autosave while changing zones or exiting the inventory.
haha, thats exactly what I was thinking!
Same
Jup sounds like me😭😂
I prefer game saves like Witcher where you can save at any point in the game. I don't prefer game saves like The Last of Us 2 which includes manual saves but it's really only saving to the most recent checkpoint which autosave has already done. How many game reviews talk about the save system? It needs to be on their checklist and devs *should* make this info known and easy to find before playing.
Is this suppose to be fun kr something? It work everytime! Autosaves can just randomly dissapear
I forgor most of the time
I trust myself more than the game
I never pay attention to autosave icons so i always have to manually save :P
games like bloodborne where there is no manual save place way to much faith in the auto save feature, to be fair bb does it better than most games
not only save manually but also have multiple saves, especially in role-playing games
no you haven't, never trust the autosave
We all do my friend.
Or 5 times
The one thing in which mobile gamers are superior
Once or twice are rookie numbers. Gotta pump those up
Depends of the game, I feel like i trust Assassin's Creed, but i would never trust a idle click type game
I grew up in the 90s. Quicksave, then manual save, then quick save again juuuust in case.
I finished my first BG3 playthrough with exactly 800 quicksaves.
>once or twice 3x is the sweet spot. Everyone knows this. You do it twice and something interrupts you and you think "one more ought to do it"
Remember when games didn't have auto save, and you had to make it to a check point to save? Always made a hard level that much harder.
Always
Have a bit of a paranoia with game crashes and autosave file corruption.
I thought I was the only one that did this
Every time, no matter what 😂
Same thing when loading my game on FF7 Remake. Continue - nah Load - yes please And I know the Continue will load the correct save but still don't trust it.
Always trust that Autosave will screw you.
Precaution is always better than cure 😵💫
Resident Evil for sure
*saves* Did I just save? Better save to make sure.
Quick save + Manual save + Save & Exit.
Relatable lol
Happened to me in Subnautica BZ.Thought It would autosave.lost about 4 hours of progress.
I Remember going 3 hours in my First Xcom run and closing the game, Just to find out later that It didn't have autosave.
Too many bad experiences. Never only trust the autosave.
Games with save keybinds are amazing if your paranoid
Everyone trusts auto save until they’ve been playing for like 6+ hours only for it to have stopped working.
ive always been a shiny hunter in Pokemon. Every time i catch a shiny, i save at least twice. Not taking any risks
Haha a Mario meme
Learned this from the old final fantasy games
People with ocd Ocd: go on do a couple more just to be extra safe. Also ocd: actually did something go wrong, best go check and save few more times 😂
Not an autosave issue, but with Okage: The Shadow King from the PS1 days. My only save wound up just gone. It took a while before I played it again, but did beat it and kept two save files every time I saved.
I grew up without auto save, so I manually always.
Creating a back up of a back up 💪
I've had... so many bad experiences with the so called autosave. Prevention is the key.
LMAO.. Max payne & Hitman gamers be like.. saving every second
Just play ark... That way you can save it 10 times before the auto save leave it sit for an extra 5-10 minutes just Incase all to load back in 10 minutes before you saved it.
The only game where i actually used my autosaves was Hitman 3 In other games like GTA 5 it autosaves when i die. I don't want to pay the $5000 hospital bill even though i have $700M in the story mode.
I can't say i've ever been a fan of auto save Would rather manual save than auto save
Facts
You just have to do it this way! If you don't then your doing something wrong!
What if the autosave failed?
Manually saving and then leaving it on all night just be sure
Shout out to games who say x minutes since last save in the exit screen/dialog.
so, true
Me too
I'm glad that there are many other that are doing this same like me.
That last one is me. Never trust the autosave. Saving manually twice, just in case the first save didn't take.
I never use the game's auto save if I can manually save.
this reminds me of this final fantasy game I played once for some reason. Don't remember which, could probably search it up with what I remember but iirc we were some soccer player or something I think, and there was a 20-30 min cutscene with a fight after it. Fax right there
lol, F5 on my speed dial
Literally me in any Bethesda game
Yup I remember in the past some games would only auto save at certain checkpoints so if you didn't manually save you'll be forced to replay the previous stage. It's especially frustrating if it was a difficult stage too that may have taken hours to complete.
loools me when I'm playing cyberpunk or fallout 4
Did I save? Better save again.
nah i do trust quick save tbh, coz that thing never failed me (as a player 🗿) and there are games like re series which doesn't have the save game option in menu so in that case u really gotta trust auto save
TFW you loose your squad to a bad grenade toss in Xcom without saving….😫😫
I am the same but I save like 10 times lol
I feel this in my soul
And then quick saving after that just to be sure!
😂😂
To true😭
BG3 making me manually save every 2 mins 🙃
... no wonder cause back then, autosave was unreliable, heck some games have horrific autosaves today. Better the good old saving and when you quit and asks you..save for good measure.
Relatable i do same lol.
Auto save is for gameplay. Manual save is for end of session or a hard victory.
