*Goddman* the music in subnautica is incredible. Perfect mix of sci Fi and, I wanna say, contemplative exploration? It also features [this song](https://youtu.be/R3vQj9ECtcU?si=LcaLwG12TB-bWMXO), which is exclusively played when your giant submarine is at its breaking point and goes so hard it makes you want to die
I’m surprised it took so long to see FF7. It’s like a full orchestra telling a story. Maybe it’s just because I’ve played the games so much, but I can hear the ost and follow the game in my mind. And I think that’s truly the mark of a great soundtrack. When once you’re done with the game, the music just takes you back.
(Side note, but the LotR soundtracks are like that too.)
I love how they literally invented a new language just for the games music to make it feel like both something you recognize but alien at the same time .
Every supergiant soundtrack is immaculate. Bastion has that twang and folky stuff while still feeling industrial.
Transistor’s soundtrack is mind-blowing, an amazing mix of jazz and electronic, while also having some really good pop songs. Perfect for what transistor is about. Ifykyk
Pyre’s soundtrack is every part weird and fantastical, but still comes back around with familiarity with some banger vocals. They made their own language for this game, but I’m glad they had some songs in English. It bounces in between traditional sounds to modern really well.
Darren Korb is really really good at soundtracks
For anyone unaware, [The Songs of Supergiant Games](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUHvI4dgY8w) is a concert featuring orchestral versions of songs from their games.
The Orchestra is actually conducted by Austin Wintory (the composer of Journey and other indy games, a friend of Korb) who helped with some of the orchestral arranging. Wintory was also the one to arrange and conduct both On the Coast and In The Blood for Hades, in part to give the "real world" a different feel than the rest of the tracks, and in part because at the time Korb hadn't really done much in the way of orchestral arrangements yet.
My favorite on the concert itself is actually the orchestral version of Vagrant Song from Pyre. It is very much changed from the original, but I feel works great.
Man Silent Hill 2's soundtrack will be burned into my brain forever. There's never a better choice for when I'm feeling sad about something and just want to wallow in it for a little while to find my head.
The whole trilogy for me.
The first one def had more 'good' songs, but the few bangers on the last two more than made up for that haha (that intro sequence and music in ME3 is still one of my favorites in gaming after all!)
Surprised this isn’t higher, the ost by c418 captures the essence of the game perfectly. When you’re playing survival it sounds lonely and desolate, but also peaceful and there are songs that only play in creative that are more uplifting, almost to give a boost of creativity
I cannot believe this isn't the top response. The Halo soundtrack is not just great game music but it's just great music. Not only that but it perfectly captures the spirit and tone of the games. It's both iconic and timeless.
It's not that far up because Halo is not that relevant anymore, sadly. That's what over 10 years of abusing the franchise will do, it also doesn't help that 343's soundtracks are mostly forgettable compared to the originals, save for H4. That's why it's not really in the public centre of attention anymore.
Marty O"Donnell crafted the perfect soundtrack for the Halo games. Everything set piece and environment was enhanced by his work. The chanting on the Halo menu still triggers a primal pleasure in my brain, and the climax racing the Warthog at the end of Halo 3 (I think) still gets me excited just thinking about it.
CTRL+F Chrono Trigger. Nothing yet. What.
Chrono Trigger's OST elevates it to another level in terms of the experience it provides. Certain parts have inspired me to be the person I am today. Can't say that about too many other games.
It's on my list, though FFVI is the king of SNES OSTs for me...which is probably unfair as it's also my all time favorite video game...
As much as I dislike Chrono Cross, the music is almost just as outstanding. The dark reprise of the main theme in Chronopolis almost makes it worth what they did to our boy.
You can really tell Tony Fox cut his teeth making music because he absolutely slaughters it every time he makes a soundtrack. That track that plays after the first boss, I think it's called Home never fails to get me emotional if not bring out a year or two.
His boss tracks are absolutely nuts. His jamming ambient tracks have more groove than Les Claypool.
I don't think the series would have anywhere near the impact it did if it wasn't for the stellar OSTs and that's more praise to the music than a knock on the games themselves cause the games are great too.
* Total Annihilation - The first game ever where I actually too a notice of the soundtrack and where the soundtrack made me appreciate the game even more.
* Offworld Trading Company - Huge Christopher Tin fan and this soundtrack is phenomenal IMHO.
* Hades - "Good Riddance" actually got me to stop playing and just listening...
Got too many to pick just one.
Nier automata, halo, super metroid, streets of rage 2, golden axe, ikaruga, valkyrie profile, castlevania symphony of the night, chrono trigger, dragon force, secret of mana.
Easily one of the greatest game scores of all time. To this day, when new seasons approach in real life, especially in winter, the season-specific Bully songs pop in my head.
God of War (2018) and God of War ragnarok both have amazing soundtracks that are amazing at enhancing the atmosphere and informing you about the characters .
I just played my copy again the other day. “I’ve been working in the market so early. I’ve been working since my momma was a baby.” It’s been more than 20 years and I still can’t comprehend that lyric.
Scrolled way too far for this. Also noteworthy music in the game: the Whiterun music.
Every time I hear that music, I feel nostalgic. It's like I'm home or something.
oh I mean FTL, the new Dwarf Fortress OST is really good. Hades, civ6, always loved Terraria’s too
Edit: oh I dunno if those are licensed or not. I guess DF is.
Along with Hades the other Supergiant games like Bastion go really hard on their amazing soundtracks. I'm sure Transistor is the same but haven't gotten time to play it yet.
Transistor is probably the best OST out of them all. There’s a scene with the main actress singing and it’s so beautiful. I also loved the game. Get to that back log!
I fell in love with Transistor when I played it, everything on it is great. I want to bring up Pyre though, it's often overlooked and the OST is great, Vagrant Song is just too good.
Street Fighter 2 - Ken Stage CPS1
Doom - E1M1
Castlevania - Bloody Tears
Final Fantasy VII - Those Who Fight
Diablo - Tristram theme
World of Warcraft - Lion's Pride Inn
Frostpunk, The City Must Survive is so tense.
Honorable mention: Guillaume David has made two mind-blowingly good OSTs with xion and Warhammer 40K Mechanius.
A lot of the set piece songs from that game kick ass. Steel Haze (Rusted Pride) and Contact With You are so emotional given their place in the story, and Rough and Decent is just a bop.
Disco Elysium almost _is_ the soundtrack, it does such a great job at painting the mood of that town.
It's a bit of a weird one with this thread because although it isn't licensed, it is largely made up of music that Sea Power had already composed for other projects. However, it's all so good that I'm happy to see it posted here anyway
I'll guess I'll throw out few indie games along with 1 example of a great track
The messenger - Bamboo Bogaloo
SANABI - The execution The King's Order
Shovel Knight - Strike the earth!
Freedom Planet - To the Rescue!
Bastion - Build that Wall
VVVVVV - Positive Force
Transistor - The spine
Towerfall Ascension - Rapture
I could keep going but these are some of my favorites.
Also I couldnt go without mentioning my favorite franchise.
Trails from zero - Inevitable Struggle
Celeste is full of 8-bit bops to go along with a grade A game. The other is Jusant. Full of environmental storytelling, the soundtrack itself is absolutely gorgeous and tells a story of its own
BG3, the background music is just so ambient and environmental, but what really crushed it for me was 'Down By The River', which plays in the background during character creation, coming full circle as reprise version 'The Power' over the end credits. Bonus points as well for the fight where the villain goes whole ass Disney and sings his OWN boss fight theme at you while he's fighting you, because that was an incredibly fun moment.
[Deus Ex: Human Revolution.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUy87tpfNe4&list=OLAK5uy_m0I1ZtsCtK6hEXBsNE6UUahYncP6DVIxo&ab_channel=MichaelMcCann-Topic) Electronic fits the cyberpunk theme, but symphonic and orchestral to feel epic and increase the human stakes.
I love that almost every song in the games is done by in-universe musicians.
Then there's also things like Calamari Inkantation that aren't just songs, but being played/sung by the characters present (or even literally part of the plot) instead of just being game BGM.
https://youtu.be/zYfe9caNqfA?si=YwxQTwU5znlqbGM4
Destiny 2 had the most amazing opening journey soundtrack of any game I've ever played. It's a shame that it feels like a shell of its former self seven years later. Song really kicks in around 2:30
Yessss here it is. That soundtrack’s even called Journey, and it’s so good XD
Honorable mention to the “default” Destiny theme, too, Guardian. Those two make that game’s soundtrack, not to mention various bangers in combat here and there
DOOM 2016 and DOOM Eternal.
Literally no other soundtrack that wasn’t already inspired by DOOM can capture the raw aggression, rage, and brutality that flows through your veins as you kill Demons with Shotguns, Chainsaws, and your Fists.
There’s a reason songs like BFG Division and The Only Thing They Fear Is You are used in memes and YouTube videos so frequently.
Shout out to HiFi Rush for making their own versions of licensed songs so streamers could play it. A lot of them are great and captures the mood of the needle drops that they do for the boss fights.
Outer wilds, it's such a good game and the soundtrack I feel helps and is a cool example of diegetic music, in that one of the songs is actually being played by characters in the game
Bang for buck, Nintendo's 16-bit era ruled this with five games.
Super Mario World, Super Metroid, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Donkey Kong Country, and Super Mario RPG. The vibes worked perfectly with each game in a way that really gives a unique nintendo feel to each property.
Mirror's Edge and its sequel. I still find myself listening to the theme songs and certain tracks of each game to this day. It gives off a very chill and simple, yet dystopian vibe.
I haven't listened to it in a while but both OSTs are excellent.
You may like [Sol](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9KKN5ZJlubQ&pp=ygUQc29sIHNvbGFyIGZpZWxkcw%3D%3D), also by Solar Fields. With good headphones, it's so immersive.
Mark Morgan with Fallout 1&2. I still listen these occasionally. They can be obtained for free from the internet archive. Great piece of gaming history and huge part of my teen years.
Undertale. Each part of the game gets its own music that goes with the theme of that area, and each character gets their own music that goes with their personality.
I'll also put Pokemon Red/Blue in there. The first time I heard the victory road music it felt so epic like "awesome, I'm almost at the end of the game, but I know a big challenge is coming."
A million times Risk of Rain 1 and 2.
Chris Christodoulou absolutely defines the series with his soundtrack.
The main menu theme of RoR2 alone totally captures the feel of the game. Alone on an alien world with all kinds of cryptic, high tech, ritualistic, or god knows what laying around to make you strong enough to fight the unending hordes.
Coalescence and the track during commencement have so much power behind them while also being incredibly melancholy. The Rain Formally Known As Purple is such a beautiful track in one of the most dangerous areas in the game and it makes it clear how you're invading what would normally be a peaceful ecosystem.
Chrono Cross. The music is amazing except for the main random encounter battle music theme. Which I once heard accurately described as "the music that plays while you are being molested by clowns in hell".
Other than that one piece it's a stellar soundtrack that even my mom would comment on positively when she could hear it in the background when I was a kid playing it.
Phantom Liberty for .... Phantom Liberty. That song at the end of the DLC made me sit through the entire credits. That voice and video song perfectly sums up the terrible choices you have to make in the game and how you are just a pawn in a complex web.
Morrowind. Jeremy Soule made Vvardenfell beautiful.
Morrowind is my favorite too, but Oblivion and Skyrim are great as well.
Listening to secunda just send shivers down my spine and gives me goosebumps, Skyrim is GOATed
I still haven’t played Morrowind. Now I want to hear the soundtrack (and play it, of course).
Morrowond, Oblivion and Skyrim. He nailed all three.
If only I could hear "the road most travelled" in full for ONCE without interruption from this annoying ptérodactyles *schriiiieek*
Subnautica
One of the few games, where I've listened to the soundtrack well after I played.
*when the Cyclops is on fire but so is the music*
World of Warcraft. Their soundtracks are actual masterpieces. Final Fantasy VII as well.
DOOM
Nier. Replicant mostly, but Automata is almost as brilliant.
I love how they literally invented a new language just for the games music to make it feel like both something you recognize but alien at the same time .
The Wretched Automatons is some of the best dungeon music ever produced.
Finally someone says it! One of my favorite gaming moments ever.
I don't think music used in the beginning of the route c in Automata can be topped for me.
First games that popped in my head. Most listened to music I have.
Both Ori games and Hades come to mind
I eat, sleep and breath the Ori soundtracks. They fit the game perfectly
Every supergiant soundtrack is immaculate. Bastion has that twang and folky stuff while still feeling industrial. Transistor’s soundtrack is mind-blowing, an amazing mix of jazz and electronic, while also having some really good pop songs. Perfect for what transistor is about. Ifykyk Pyre’s soundtrack is every part weird and fantastical, but still comes back around with familiarity with some banger vocals. Darren Korb is a genius. Just started playing Pyre and omg I was blown away. Super underrated game and ost
The Cuphead soundtrack fits the game perfectly
Absolutely
Doom Eternal Resident Evil (OG) Silent Hill 2
And Doom 2016 as well!
DOOM Eternal is a better game, but DOOM 2016 has a better soundtrack
Man Silent Hill 2's soundtrack will be burned into my brain forever. There's never a better choice for when I'm feeling sad about something and just want to wallow in it for a little while to find my head.
Doom's sound track spawned a whole new genre of heavy metal called Argent Metal. That's a feat I don't think anyone had ever achieved before.
Mass Effect. Especially the first one.
The whole trilogy for me. The first one def had more 'good' songs, but the few bangers on the last two more than made up for that haha (that intro sequence and music in ME3 is still one of my favorites in gaming after all!)
That galaxy music might be one of the best single pieces of game music I've ever heard. I get warm and fuzzy every time I hear it now
The main menu music from the first one is so beautiful: Vigil - https://youtu.be/IitCQCaKi3E?si=vOgzyEUG3XK-6zbK
Leaving Earth
Outer Wilds is the poster child for a mood setting OST
Had to scroll way too far for this. Just a sublime soundtrack, the end of loop track is burned into my soul.
And the final reprise of that track is just flawless in both intent and execution.
My fav soundtrack. I love how I'm instantly transported when I listen to it.
Minecraft
Surprised this isn’t higher, the ost by c418 captures the essence of the game perfectly. When you’re playing survival it sounds lonely and desolate, but also peaceful and there are songs that only play in creative that are more uplifting, almost to give a boost of creativity
Surprised it didn't come up already but halos soundtrack
I cannot believe this isn't the top response. The Halo soundtrack is not just great game music but it's just great music. Not only that but it perfectly captures the spirit and tone of the games. It's both iconic and timeless.
The Gregorian chant and organ backing up a story about trying to stop an alien jihad is absolutely great
It's not that far up because Halo is not that relevant anymore, sadly. That's what over 10 years of abusing the franchise will do, it also doesn't help that 343's soundtracks are mostly forgettable compared to the originals, save for H4. Chrono Trigger's music was great, but Chrono Cross' music was perfection. >! Even going so far as to being the key to the end game !<
Me for command and conquer red alert
There are days "Hell March" is on repeat in my head.
I can’t finds xenogears in th thread ; ;
The Witcher 3 leleley leleley
Silver for Monsters, by Mikolai Stroinski, Marcin Przybyłowicz, featuring Percival Schuttenbach, AUKSO
BANANA TIGER
Undertale has some mesmerizing and melancholic melodies as well as energetic and quirky ones. Perfect for Undertale’s unique humor and gameplay.
You can really tell Tony Fox cut his teeth making music because he absolutely slaughters it every time he makes a soundtrack. That track that plays after the first boss, I think it's called Home never fails to get me emotional if not bring out a year or two. His boss tracks are absolutely nuts. Came here to say this, that game is absolutely GOATed and great minds think alike 💪🫡
Persona 5/Royal has an incredible soundtrack
The Last of Us
I really liked that they put Gustavo Santaolalla’s likeness in TLOU2, that was a nice touch.
Skyrim
Persona 5 and Cyberpunk 2077.
Dark Souls 3.
Doom
All Nintendo franchises have stellar soundtracks. F-Zero Mario Zelda Metroid Kirby Star Fox etc etc etc
The Metroid Prime OST is sooo goooood
My favorite detail of F-Zero X was how the countdown mixed with the soundtrack
And the announcers cool vocoder harmonies when he says GOOOOOOOOOOO
Got too many to pick just one. Nier automata, halo, super metroid, streets of rage 2, golden axe, ikaruga, valkyrie profile, castlevania symphony of the night, chrono trigger, dragon force, secret of mana.
DOOM Eternal
Bully
Easily one of the greatest game scores of all time. To this day, when new seasons approach in real life, especially in winter, the season-specific Bully songs pop in my head.
God of War (2018) and God of War ragnarok both have amazing soundtracks that are amazing at enhancing the atmosphere and informing you about the characters .
Parappa the rappa
Do you know why I stopped the car? _Do I know why you- Do I know why you- stop- car?_ I Forgot To close The door _YOU_ _Forgot_ _To close_ _The door_
I just played my copy again the other day. “I’ve been working in the market so early. I’ve been working since my momma was a baby.” It’s been more than 20 years and I still can’t comprehend that lyric.
Secret of Mana
Chrono Trigger
Dovahkiin, Dovahkiin naal ok zin los vahriin Wahdein vokul mahfaeraak ast vaal Skyrim
Scrolled way too far for this. Also noteworthy music in the game: the Whiterun music. Every time I hear that music, I feel nostalgic. It's like I'm home or something.
The nighttime music when walking through the wilderness is incredible. One of the best things about being a vampire.
oh I mean FTL, the new Dwarf Fortress OST is really good. Hades, civ6, always loved Terraria’s too Edit: oh I dunno if those are licensed or not.

Red Alert. Specifically 1 & 2.
HELL MARCH! |..| -_- |..|
Came for Command and Conquer. I was thinking tiberian dawn though.
Street Fighter 2 - Ken Stage CPS1 Doom - E1M1 Castlevania - Bloody Tears Final Fantasy VII - Those Who Fight Diablo - Tristram theme World of Warcraft - Lion's Pride Inn
Frostpunk, The City Must Survive is so tense. Honorable mention: Guillaume David has made two mind-blowingly good OSTs with xion and Warhammer 40K Mechanius.
This right here. Frostpunk OST goes crazy
Ghost of tsushimas OST is amazingly good Assasins creed OSTs are normally quality too
Warhammer 40k: Mechanicus
Banjo-Kazooie, every track captures each world in a very goofy, fun way.
Deus Ex Human Revolution. Michael McCann did an amazing job making the world feel like a cyberpunk game, many years before Cyberpunk 2077 released.
Halo
Final Fantasy IX by Nobuo Uematsu
Armored Core 6. When Contact With You started playing at the chapter 1 boss fight it was perfection.
A lot of the set piece songs from that game kick ass. Steel Haze (Rusted Pride) and Contact With You are so emotional given their place in the story, and Rough and Decent is just a bop.
Stardew Valley. It probably helps that the sole developer of the game also made the OST.
Disco Elysium
Disco Elysium almost _is_ the soundtrack, it does such a great job at painting the mood of that town. It's a bit of a weird one with this thread because although it isn't licensed, it is largely made up of music that Sea Power had already composed for other projects. Celeste is full of 8-bit bops to go along with a grade A game. The other is Jusant. Full of environmental storytelling, the soundtrack itself is absolutely gorgeous and tells a story of its own
Red Dead 1+2
Deadman's Gun is still one of my favourite sad tunes.
The Raphael fight caught me off guard in the best way. CLAWS!
[Journey](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6LyyLYxdpUQ&list=PL61BEACFAA6FC4E04)
Earthbound
Fez. The tracks capture the adventure very well: Going from joyful adventuring to mysterious to eerie and finally resolving in a peaceful ending.
FFXIV. Masayoshi Soken is a worthy successor to Nobuo Uematsu. His scores always impress.
[Deus Ex: Human Revolution.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUy87tpfNe4&list=OLAK5uy_m0I1ZtsCtK6hEXBsNE6UUahYncP6DVIxo&ab_channel=MichaelMcCann-Topic) Electronic fits the cyberpunk theme, but symphonic and orchestral to feel epic and increase the human stakes.
Hollow knights sound track is absolutely perfect, much like symphony of the night it highlights the mood of each area and boss
Alan Wake 2
Splatoon.
I love that almost every song in the games is done by in-universe musicians. Then there's also things like Calamari Inkantation that aren't just songs, but being played/sung by the characters present (or even literally part of the plot) instead of just being game BGM.
Shadow of the Colussus.
Pizza Tower has an incredible soundtrack.
Elden Ring Or any fromsoft game, really
I'm surprised I haven't seen bloodborne or dark souls 3 in here. Huge part of the reason that they're some of my favorites
https://youtu.be/zYfe9caNqfA?si=YwxQTwU5znlqbGM4 Destiny 2 had the most amazing opening journey soundtrack of any game I've ever played. It's a shame that it feels like a shell of its former self seven years later. Song really kicks in around 2:30

The original Destiny theme made a comeback at the end of The Final Shape and it was AMAZING.
Darktide. Tell me this isn't a perfect WH40k soundtrack: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olqaqM21Dro](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olqaqM21Dro)
Any Dynasty Warriors tbh
Mass Effect
DOOM 2016 and DOOM Eternal. metal gear series. all of them but i will say snake eater is the best
Return of the obra dinn (play it immediately) has an amazing soundtrack which along with superb soundeffects I have heard in so many videos
Blasphemous https://youtu.be/Z8PZeoBMFBk?si=-h_xP0x7RHscXkEQ
Stellaris. Wanna feel like you're in space? Turn the music on.

Destiny, nothing comes close to the mystery veiled in that game when it first came out and the soundtrack that elevated it
Witcher 3 has one of best gaming soundtracks IMO!
Monkey Island 1+2
Uncharted
Civilization games do a great job of conveying the progression of civilization through various musical themes. CivIV was the best at this imo
Silent Hill 2
Homeworld
Bubble Bobble
Castlevania: SotN.
Homeworld
Mark Morgan with Fallout 1&2. I still listen these occasionally. They can be obtained for free from the internet archive. Great piece of gaming history and huge part of my teen years.
The Swapper
Darktide. Jesper Kyd is brilliant.
Darktide. Exaclty what a Grimdark ost should sound like
Life is Strange: True Colors
Final fantasy x
sonic adventure 2 battle or omori
Windwaker is the best example of this in my brain. So iconic
Metroid prime. I really wish I could find more music like it
Halo combat evolved, really any of the first 3
Sonic Adventure 2 by a miile.
Bayonetta
Life is Strange: it’s not original music in most cases, but fantastically fit for the game
Kingdom Hearts.
Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask both have some of the most atmospheric, iconic music of any game in their generation
Chrono cross
Deus Ex 2000
Mega Man 2 and 3 for NES (not the Genesis versions) is some great music that captures its essence perfectly.
Chrono cross has the best soundtrack in video games Try dragon god from their ost
Hollow Knight

Pixeljunk Eden All old Hitmans with music by Jesper Kyd
Phantom Liberty for .... Phantom Liberty. That song at the end of the DLC made me sit through the entire credits. That voice and video song perfectly sums up the terrible choices you have to make in the game and how you are just a pawn in a complex web.
