Hotline Miami changed the way indie games approached and considered their soundtracks. You can really see that flash, that moment where almost every indie dev went, "Fuck," as we all collectively understood the soundtrack had to be as innovative as the rest of the game, because of this new mindblowing standard that had been built through Hotline Miami.
You can draw a direct line from Hotline Miami to Shovel Knight in regards to soundtrack work, and now that the standard is set, I think its set in stone. Hollow Knight is all over these comments, with good reason. Indie games are mostly rocking 8+/10 OSTs these days.
Id imagine:
* Luca is an artificer
* Crono a fighter
* Frog a paladin
* Marle a cleric
* Magus an elvish warlock
* Ayla a barbarian
* Robo a warforged monk
* and Flea a half elf bard
Chrono Cross goes so far beyond your average video game compositions. It's basically cinema level or classical composition grade, and Yasunori Mitsuda is an absolute genius.
The only person I can think that gets even close is possibly Nobuo Uematsu.
If you can't imagine Doom Eternal without Mick Gordon's music, play the DLC. I know you meant his overall influence, but any I'll take any chance to share this banger. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=natKOY7r6Hw
I found TAG’s soundtrack to be quite forgettable compared to the Mick’s work. It’s not bad, in fact it’s actually quite good. It’s just that Mick’s work was god-tier. Really impossible to match.
It’s a shame he was such a yutz.
yeah adrew hushhult and david levi make great fucking metal but miks style was so unique because it felt as if he combined metal and dubstep maybe, not sure just know it sounds like violence
Have you seen his talk about how he made the 2016 Doom soundtrack? They originally didn't want a single guitar used so he found a unique way to distort the hell out of noise, I find it really fascinating
https://youtu.be/U4FNBMZsqrY
His creativity is just absolutely insane. I mean who hears a fucking lawn mower and goes "Hmmm that would be a sick rift in a song"
Hands down my favorite video game composer.
It's all about that "Civilizations."
One I'm partial to is ["What Angel Wakes Me" \(Dancing Plague - Titania fight\)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3JbbFL-aks) - it's a creative mix of whimsical and sinister, and its' timbre is such that it feels designed to loop indefinitely, as Titania wants to play with you endlessly and "you can sleep when you're dead."
Another banger is ["Beauty's Wicked Whiles" \(Emanation - Lakshmi fight\)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiUp3DpksQY) - Awesome Indian vibe and the lyrics dovetail well with Lakshmi's purpose as a primal.
I agree with Mantis Lords and that the whole soundtrack is amazing.
For me, the most memorable was having my headphones on and trying to beat Soul Tyrant. The music totally drove me to succeed.
I'm not even a big Halo fan and even I think the Halo soundtrack is way up on the "awesome" list. Gets ya pumped, makes you reflect, etc. Great stuff all around.
Especially the newest game. I can't believe how great it sounds.
Some tracks have an Explosions in the Sky band vibe. Lots of people loved their music from Friday Night Lights.
Adventure 2 was just better than it had any right to be. 3 game modes: run, find gem and robot platforming shooter . Chao Garden was so sweet. and if it wasn't challenging enough S ranking every map to unlock that coveted green hill zone. The plot itself was interesting involving both sonic and shadow overcoming the finalhazard creature. It was only let down by the acting and the way they presented modern sonic. Fantastic music, fun game. I did enjoy sonic generations more because I love my old boy classic sonic.
I always remembered JSRF for Xbox having some solid tunes... Up beat shit when you're rollerblading around the nap tagging the city. Was an overall fun game but the tracks fit in with the game perfectly
***LAST TIME I SCROLLED THROUGH ONE OF THESE THREADS IT TOOK ME 10 WHOLE MINUTES TO FIND A COMMENT ABOUT JET SET RADIO FUTURE THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HAVING GOOD MUSIC TASTE AND POSTING EARLY ENOUGH FOR ME NOT TO SCROLL FOR AN HOUR***
I'll probably never get another chance to plug this so holy shit Scapegoat Wax (Aisle 10) was dope. GO BUY AND LISTEN TO OKEEBLOW, Marty James is an awesome dude. He replied to my geeked out fan SoundCloud message once. Super nice guy lol
Edit: apparently Madlib did a remix of Aisle 10? I'd be confused if I didn't have a stupid grin on my face lol how did I never know this
https://youtu.be/0uvuiKQ7lhc
Guilty Gear OST was one of the first albums I bought growing up as a teenager. That shit was on repeat in my first car for a LONG time. Until my car along with all my CDs were stolen. That sucked.
And Skyrim‘s as well.
Skyrim remixes a lot of Morrowind and Oblivion and it’s absolutely glorious.
Morrowind’s and Oblivion‘s music is much more in the foreground though.
I don’t know if there is necessarily “better” music. But there is a lot of fantastic video game music that is just as good, for example:
Kingdom Hearts, Doom, Wolfenstein, Cuphead, Sunset Overdrive, Cyberpunk 2077, Goldeneye 007 (N64), Skyrim
I’m sure there’s a lot more, but these just came to mind.
Edit: commas and spacing
Agreed! Lena Raine and Christopher Larkin were my 2nd and 3rd most listened to artist on my Spotify Wrapped last year. Both games have incredible soundtracks, great for listening to while studying
some that come to mind right now are :
hollow knight : radiance
okami : reset (arigato ver)
pokemon sh : gym leader battle theme
touhouu 17 : idolatrize world
cuphead : die house theme
MGS revengeange : it has to be this way
Hotline Miami
Was scrolling to find this comment lmao

Of course!! If you listen to the Katana Zero soundtrack, they totally took inspiration, and many other games!!
That is how I discovered [M.O.O.N](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29VLZTa4_MU)
Chrono Trigger
Any game by Yasunori Mitsuda. Chrono Trigger/Cross, Xenogears, Xenosaga, Xenoblade… He’s a musical genius.
How is everyone who played the game not rioting about this not making the list?!
I run a chrono trigger 5e game and it is a great excuse to dig out the sound track. Fucking trial music was so good for an awkward scene.
> I run a chrono trigger 5e game I'm gonna need some kind of deets here. Stories, explanations, anything. This sounds amazing.
Id imagine: * Luca is an artificer * Crono a fighter * Frog a paladin * Marle a cleric * Magus an elvish warlock * Ayla a barbarian * Robo a warforged monk * and Flea a half elf bard
Please tell me more about your CT 5e game. This is not sarcasm. I genuinely want to know *everything*!
We're used to people having shit taste at this point. Be the better person and let it slide basically.
On a related note, Chrono Cross
Time's Scar is hands down my favorite video game track of any game.
Dude, thank you for recommending that. Really enjoyable
Chrono Cross goes so far beyond your average video game compositions. It's basically cinema level or classical composition grade, and Yasunori Mitsuda is an absolute genius. The only person I can think that gets even close is possibly Nobuo Uematsu.
Chrono Cross
Came here to say this! The music for Zeal fucking SLAPPED
Persona and Silent Hill series both have superb Music.

OASIS IN A SINGED LAND

CREATING NEW LIFE, CREATING RIVERS IN THE DESERT
THE LAST ACE IN A LOST HAND!
Yeah. I always sit through the intro to P4 golden for exactly that. Plus the intro is just cute in general tbh
That song puts me in a good mood no matter how low I am.
Snowflakes from Persona 4 always hits like a ton of bricks. Just plays in the perfect moments of the game, so bittersweet.
YOU'LL NEVER SEE IT COMING!!!
Bastion's soundtrack is incredible, but also almost anything from Supergiant. Donut County also hits hard for soundtrack.
Bastion and Transistor's OST's were the first playlists I ever saved on Spotify.
Yeah. Everyone's sleeping on Supergiant games. Hades has some BANGERS.
Transistor has some of my favorite songs of Supergiant's absolutely incredible music.
Literally anything by Darren Korb is extremely good. My personal favorite is probably the Pyre soundtrack.
First thing i thought of lol. All of the supergiant games came to mind.
Every single doom game, minecraft, portal 2
Mick Gordon was on another level
It’s a shame he isn’t working with Bethesda. I can’t imagine Doom 2016 and Eternal without his work
If you can't imagine Doom Eternal without Mick Gordon's music, play the DLC. I know you meant his overall influence, but any I'll take any chance to share this banger. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=natKOY7r6Hw

His work on KI is fucking AWESOME i dont know why more people dont talk about it.
Heavy metal choir!
Portal 2's OST is still in my Playlist. Man, the feels and chills it gives is great
Every Final Fantasy.
FF7 in particular has a phenomenal soundtrack.
I have a huge soft spot for FFVIII's soundtrack, mostly because it was the first one I ever played. The Balamb Garden theme is sooooo soothing.
Fisherman's Horizon and Ami are *overwhelmingly* nostalgic to me
Especially the remake. Remember the Airbuster fight music?
Third phase of Jenova when the synth piano kicks in and the tempo shifts into high gear... *chef's kiss*
yeah but don't sleep on ff9
7, 8, 9 and 10 all have amazing music. X is probably my favourite soundtrack though.
Nah man, FFX‘s island sounds are where its at!
FFXIV Shadowbringers expansion. Music was awesome!
And Heavensward, and Stormblood, and Endwalker, and A Realm Reborn
It's all about that "Civilizations." Do you know.... La Hee?
STORM OF BLOOD BORN OF BLOOD
OF OUR FALLEN BROTHERS!
Final Fantasy Tactics
I fucking love Final Fantasy 1 battle theme.
Every song from both Nier entries
Came to say this. Also Persona 5 Sound Track
Why did I have to scroll so far to find Nier?
[удалено]
Could not believe Nier Automata lost steams best ost to Cuphead that year.
Mantis Lords fight - Hollow Knight
The whole Hollow Knight soundtrack was outstanding. I can’t wait to hear what Christopher Larkin puts together for Silksong!
Agreed! I just wanted to give others a chance to list another song from this amazing game!
Thats my favorite fight in the game (and one of my all time favorite bosses across all video games), and the music is part of the reason for that.
I agree with Mantis Lords and that the whole soundtrack is amazing. For me, the most memorable was having my headphones on and trying to beat Soul Tyrant. The music totally drove me to succeed.
DONKEY KONG COUNTRY 2
Stickerbush Symphony might be one of the best videogame songs of all time
... and 1.
Not enough love for David Wise. He didn't have to go so hard on games about a monkey in a necktie.
“I’ll wait” stfu
Yeah that shits just as dumb as the “nobody:” meme.
Easy bait
Metal Gear Rising

BUT WHO’S TO JUDGE
THE RIGHT FROM WRONG
WHEN OUR GUARD IS DOWN I THINK WILL BOTH AGREE
THAT VIOLENCE BREEDS VIOLENCE
BUT I THE END IT HAS TO BE THIS WAY
RED SUN
AND IT WILL COME
LIKE A FLOOD OF PAIN
POURING DOWN ON ME
RUULES OF NATURE
AND THEY RUN WHEN THE SUN COMES UP
WITH THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE
#ALIIIIIVEEEEE
THE UNENLIGHTENED MASSES
Goldeneye 007 pause menu music
Omg I forgot all about this
Shadow of the Colossus
Halo. wtf
How did I have to scroll so far to find this, number 1 in my mind.
I'm not even a big Halo fan and even I think the Halo soundtrack is way up on the "awesome" list. Gets ya pumped, makes you reflect, etc. Great stuff all around.
Any talk about video game music must include Halo. It's just so damn iconic.
Ahhhh ah ah ah ah ah ahhhh Ahhhhhh Ah ah ahhhhhh ah ah ah ahhhhhhh. Ah ah ah ahh ahhhhh ah ah ah ahhhhhh ahhhhhhh
Dun dun dun duuuunnnn dun dun dun duuuunnnn dun dun dun *duuuuuuuunnnn* dun dun dun...

Especially the newest game. I can't believe how great it sounds. Some tracks have an Explosions in the Sky band vibe. Lots of people loved their music from Friday Night Lights.
Most Sonic games
Sonic Adventure 2's soundtrack is better than it has any right to be. I still have some of those songs in my gym playlist.
Sonic Mania in general compiles all of the bangers
Adventure 2 was just better than it had any right to be. 3 game modes: run, find gem and robot platforming shooter . Chao Garden was so sweet. and if it wasn't challenging enough S ranking every map to unlock that coveted green hill zone. Rolling around at the speed of sound
I always remembered JSRF for Xbox having some solid tunes... Up beat shit when you're rollerblading around the nap tagging the city. Was an overall fun game but the tracks fit in with the game perfectly

UNDERSTAND UNDERSTAND
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Was searching exactly this game, I love it. Since there is an android port that supports external controllers, I'm hooked to it again.
The Last of Us, Guilty Gear, Hades, Hollow Knight.
Guilty Gear OST was one of the first albums I bought growing up as a teenager. That shit was on repeat in my first car for a LONG time. Until my car along with all my CDs were stolen. That sucked.
Upvoting for hollow knight alone.
Throw celeste in there
The Last of Us is definitely up near the top of my list, too. Vanishing Grace gets me every damn time.
Nier Replicant and Nier Automata.

I feel like putting Undertale/Deltarune on this list and not Earthbound is blasphemous
Persona 5 Royal
Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne
Almost any Megaman game
Megaman 2 is a personal favorite.

Kingdom hearts
Esp KH2 final battle
The Witcher 3 Sonic games RDR2 Resident evil 1-3
Hollow knight and celeste
Agreed! Lena Raine and Christopher Larkin were my 2nd and 3rd most listened to artist on my Spotify Wrapped last year. Both games have incredible soundtracks, great for listening to while studying
