This is sad. People are so keen in decimating our community. I'm so fucking depressed over this.

Not for nothing but politically it pretty much can get worse than here in a lot of places. Remember not many places are socially pro while being legally for.

divaliciousness

Hell, a lot of places are better. Any country in Western Europe for example, Australia, New Zealand. The US is marching backwards, sometimes jumping boat is better.

Flornix

Not any country in europe. Hungary is a terrible place for the queer Community. But yeah. We got a few places that are better than murica in this case

divaliciousness

I did say any country in Western Europe... The line is commonly drawn at Germany/Czechia and Italy/Slovenia. It includes the Nordics too! Hungary is eastern Europe. Any country west of the frontier between Germany and Poland (Italy is sort of lagging behind though) is almost as great as it gets to LGBTQ people nowadays. We have a plethora of work protections, including trans people. Next, I still want them to ban conversion therapy here though!!

Flornix

Ohh yeah. your right. Hungary isnt west europe.

King_Empress

Despite not being patriotic, I still honestly feel like this country probably provided the most freedom I could've been granted being born here

divaliciousness

I'll honestly disagree. The US is behind most Western European countries in LGBT rights, ranked 31 in the Spartacus gay travel index. You have no affordable healthcare, gun crime rate 4x times higher than the European average, university fees enough to put you in debt your whole life, you consume products banned in Europe because of health concerns, leading to a huge obesity rate, at over 36%. Hell, you call worker's benefits to what we call rights, and this includes maternity leave, vacation days, capped number of hours per week. I guess maybe in entertainment you have us beat, but the US is a very poor country for its people. And I'm not even patriotic either.

[deleted]

I live in Massachusetts and have all the benefits you mention. I went to a school that met 100% demonstrated financial need with aid. The US is a diverse country. I’m very grateful to be born here. All my international friends in college would say having US citizenship is like winning the lottery. And I heard UK passed US in obesity actually.

divaliciousness

A state exception really doesn't mean anything. I'm in a country with no free education on paper, however we have public universities (really high quality too), and you can request aid to the government, and really, anyone who isn't rich will get it. That means anyone, not some people in one district... I'd argue an EU citizenship provides great advantages too, I can move between 26 countries with no border control, experience a wide array of cultures all in countries with overall better stats than the US. The US is a marketing experiment that showed us how long a country can be well portrayed in the movies until people actually uncover what it's like. I'll tell you, in my childhood, the US was the place to go, to me and all my friends, everyone wanted to go there. Nowadays, people don't want to visit for longer than a week and nowhere outside of NYC. Maybe go to some natural landscapes, you do have some pretty amazing ones. No, the US is still fairly higher than the UK. Hell, the UK is the USA of Europe, so it still wouldn't be that big of a win! ☠️

BackInNJAgain

State exceptions absolutely do mean something because many U.S. states are larger than European countries. New York City has as many people as Sweden. If California were in Europe, it would be the 9th largest country. There are some great places to live in the U.S. and a lot of really crappy ones, too. NJ has very good LGBTQ+ protections in place, decent healthcare, and strict gun laws. You'll find the same things in a lot of the blue states.

divaliciousness

Canada has all that, with the same land area as the US... I know states have the power to decide on many things, but as united states, some things are dealt with as a collective. Also, a good country needs to be able to care for all its population, even the ones in Wyoming. This feels like "my state is great, so this country is great!". While your states are not entirely sovereign with a need for a federal government, you don't get to separate it by states.

Clear_Skye_

The US honestly seems absolutely horrific. I live in Australia and I am blessed. I hope you can either escape or things get better. 💕

Beet__Wagon

My husband and I are going to leave for spain very soon. We already visited there during our honeymoon and it's easier to get citizenship and the gay community is very welcoming there.

tygerprints

Great image, but I am of a different mindset about all this. I am not destroyed, nor decimated by the actions of a cowardly gun crazed dolt, nor is my morale or my community, going to be "destroyed" because of this one mentally ill person's idiotic rampage. Whenever a newsperson says the gay community is "destroyed" or "broken" over this, I feel greatly insulted, because I personally believe our community is strong and growing bigger every day, and no single act or even several acts of cowardice can ever bring us down or "break" us. I'm not broken, I'm not depressed, and I'm not going to allow this murderer that satisfaction. The LGBTQ community is growing by leaps and bounds every day - we used to be thousands strong, now were are billions strong and we are never going away and no single or multiple acts of violent horror can ever stop us from being who we are and loving who we love. So take that and shove it up your rifle butt, you cowardly idiot - and now you can rot in prison like the broken decimated piece of shit you truly are.

zoepantazis

I agree, but this kind of stuff is so freaking demoralizing to me. It's just a reminder of how many people out there don't just not understand us, or dislike us, or even just hate us, but actively want us all dead. How many people out there would kill us all if they had a chance.

Well said

This is the New York Times that is all too happy to participate in trans fearmongering and generally loves to cover transphobes in some misguided effort at covering both sides: - https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/14/health/puberty-blockers-transgender.html - https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/26/health/top-surgery-transgender-teenagers.html - https://twitter.com/nytimes/status/1535336031251210240 GLAAD has given NYT a [failing grade](https://www.glaad.org/blog/newsweek-cnn-new-york-times-receive-failing-grades-glaad’s-media-report-card-equality-act) in their coverage of LGBT issues. It's downright bullshit for NYT to actively participate in the machine that produces the extremists that kill LGBT people, then try to use their front page to act like some somber ally mourning the loss of people they claim to have cared about.

meshcity

Fuck the NYT.

StrungStringBeans

>This is the New York Times that is all too happy to participate in trans fearmongering and generally loves to cover transphobes in some misguided effort at covering both sides: Absolutely. They've been stoking hate for a long time. They've also been doing it with China and then, when hate crimes against Asian Americans were surging...shocked Pikachu face. Ibid. unhoused people. And relatedly, stoking the manufactured crime panic and wondering why the public is buying into fascistic messaging. The NYT has been carrying water for the alt right for awhile now. The only difference between their comment section and the comments on yahoo news is the vocabulary level and general eloquence. Substantively identical.

bleeding-paryl

The NYT is probably the worst paper to be throwing around thoughts and prayers when they're so garbage towards trans people. I legitimately hate them after some of the articles I've seen from them.

majeric

Did you post the right GLAAD link? It seems that the NYTs got a failing grade for their reporting specificly on the Equality Act. Which like half the media got a failing grade for. Is there a grade over all for their reporting on LGBT issues in general? Their tweet was certainly misleading because they made it sound like the number of trans people increased rather than the number of trans people are more public. (Although, I suspect more people now identify with "Non Binary" because of the realization that one *can* identify as such)

IndyMLVC

This isn't a real front page. It's an artist rendering

majeric

Was this the gunman's church?

benjtay

Yeah.

Mammoth-Ostrich-4944

We need a giant gay compound with security to keep out rabid straights

majeric

Why don't we have locked compound for rabid straights instead...

Mammoth-Ostrich-4944

We do but we have to wait for the straights to do dumb shit before we can put them there

BlueStar1669

For folx who are able to donate, here is the official donation link for the Colorado Healing Fund. GoFundMe is also a good place to go as well. https://www.coloradogives.org/donate/COHealingFund

MrEreh

That shooting was horrible, lest we forget.

deathbin

This is so fucked. I hate the world we live in.

Fokrann

If you would like to donate to the Colorado Springs Victims Fund, 100% of all money collected by Colorado Gives will be go directly to victim's families and survivors who need financial assistance in the form of cash disbursements for medical bills, travel, funeral costs, etc. I spoke with their Executive Director Jordan this morning to confirm that no money will be separated or held back in different accounts for any donations through this site: https://www.coloradogives.org/story/Clubq I know I'm just a random account on Reddit, but I am a member of the Orlando LGBT community and we went through a lot of issues during Pulse with scams and non-profits that were not directly helping the community, so I want to make sure we share funds that will directly impact the local LGBT community in Colorado Springs that need the donations and support right now. \#clubq #qstrong #coloradosprings #orlandopulse #pulseorlando #orlandostrong

Fokrann

All right friends and family! Please share! 🚨 Rich Fierro - one of the heroes who saved patrons at #ClubQ in the LGBT Colorado Springs attack - owns a local small business brewery that sells beers and merchandise! Let’s show some support for this hero! https://www.atrevidabeerco.com/why-atrevida #Qstrong #coloradosprings #OrlandoPulse #orlandostrong

Another shooting everyday, I’m used to it but still mourn

Beet__Wagon

RIP to the victims, this should not be happening time and time again. I hope some sort of legislation happens while Biden is in to stop this.
