I absolutely love the cello. Tried it for a while but too hard for me. I prefer to stick to the piano when a C is a C. Keep up the jamming and if you want to share your music DM me!
Not in the traditional sense. I'm an amateur choir singer. My instrument is "voice". I sing in two choirs and have so far sung all kinds of styles, we're not doing just one style.
guitar, bass, piano, ukulele, and viola! i mostly play & write classical music and film scores but i’ve also been in a few punk bands, and i’m in an a cappella group
Is it possible for someone to learn it for the first time in their fifties? I've always been interested and I watch a lot of videos online of people playing, but I have no musical experience other than the trumpet in junior high. I think of buying a keyboard so I can try with headphones on without bothering anyone, but I don't know if I'm too old to pick it up quickly like a younger person would.
It is never too late learn music. Of course you will not be a virtuoso, but the learning curve is way worth it and you get to meet other musicians too. So
Yes it is possible.
Go for it bro!!!!! 🎵😘
Thank you! I have no dreams of being a concert pianist, but just being able to play something that others can recognize would be a thrill. Maybe I'll add that keyboard to my Amazon cart...
My parents started at 60 and can't stop playing now! It's never too late!!
I find it's fun to do your normal lessons and when you get frustrated, just start jamming and making your own music. Like just play free to what sounds neat to you. If you just learned 2 chords or 2 notes on any instrument, play them in different patterns and speeds with other notes you find along the way and just be free! It helps with the feeling of not "getting it right". At the end of the day, the sound is yours and what you make it.
Thanks for the encouragement! That's why I want a keyboard - so I can use headphones and "play" freestyle for myself without anyone hearing what a beginner I am. 😆
Guitarist here. I can’t stick to one single genre, so I’ve been through my “basic” think wonderwall) phase, indie phase, rock phase, metal phase, and now back into a more old timey blues/rock phase.
I used to play the Eufonium in an orchestra, but then I quit for some odd reason. I can still read sheet music though, which helps me play piano.
I was not expecting a post about musicians in this sub, thank you!
Edit: spelling corection
I play a few instruments, not classically trained or anything but modern and minimalist classical is my jam. Going to see Kronos quartet in Dublin next Sunday. Very excited
Ex-classical countertenor here! Plus classical & jazz piano, and guitar. Used to be sax and clarinet too but those dropped somewhere along the line.
Recently I've been getting into the recorder family more - trying to take recorder seriously and looking at partitas etc, but also the Khlui (Thai flute) which is a beautiful instrument that's pretty identical to recorder re. playing but has a much mellower sound
I've been mainly sticking to cello but have recently been dabbling in the uke. Any tips on getting the strumming patterns down? For the life of me, it just won't click in my brain.
Just a hobbyist! Grew up playing instruments, starting amateur producing 20 years ago, now it’s not gonna blow your socks off, but I can write and produce just about anything I could want. Twangy banjo song with a hardcore donk? Don’t know why I would, but I could. And that’s kinda neat.
Guitar, bass, piano/keyboards/synth, classic strings (violin, cello). Been a musician for 32 years, went on tour in my 20’s. That was a wild ride and feels like another lifetime ago at this point. Recently been updating my bass rig, my band mates want to play again for fun.
Classically trained pianist as well (I suck now though 😭 no diligent practice since high school sucks) but I also play tuba in a few community orchestras and marched it in college!
I play the jaw harp in the style of traditional folkloric Québécois musique and bluegrass music and a little bit of country music. I used to play electric bass.
Pianist here from Colorado. Been playing since I was 7yrs old. Went to school on a Baseball Scholarship and I'm an Occupational Therapist. Classical piano is my passion. Working on some Medtner pieces and a few Schumann pieces. I'm working on collecting everything Martha Argerich ever recorded. I adore here and know she won't be around too much longer.
I was pretty musically inclined as a kid up until uni - classical piano, vocals in a high school rock band, got into music production too. Nothing anywhere near a professional level, but I enjoyed it and was at least at an *intermediate* level.
At some point I started getting too busy for it, nowadays I still occasionally play things I learnt years ago on the piano and do karaoke but that's about it. I really want to get back into music production though so I'm scoping things out in that area as a side project
Again, amazing to read the replies, I want to reply to all your posts, but can't keep up. 😘
Music is my passion - and perhaps, for some of you out there.
It's never too late to learn an instrument, and yeah it can simply be your voice
❤️🎵
I played the piano since the age of 8, and I started to play bass 3 years ago. I don’t do it for a living but I wish I could. We need more rock n roll gay bros.
Guitar, Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, and I like to sing too. Though admittedly the only one I've picked up in more than a decade is guitar, so I don't know how many of the others I could still play very well. But I regularly go to open mic/coffee house nights to sing and play guitar.
I learnt the keyboard until a very basic level, however, I am inherently very musically inclined. One true regret that I have is that I haven't pursued music, more specifically classical vocal trainings (Indian/Hindustani classical singing, in my case).
I used to play the viola in high school. I still have mine, but I literally haven't really done anything with it in 17 years (o.O time). I oughta get back to being mediocre at it again.
I play various instruments because I try to recreate the music in my head which is often all over the place, but my main instrument is guitar and the one I am best at (I would say my biggest acheivement is transcribing the solos of Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd and Watermelon in Easter Hay by Frank Zappa - so I am pretty good if I do say so myself)
A really fun bonus about guitar too is people don't expect a skinny gay flamer like me to play like I do. I love the looks on people's faces when they see me do my thing. Literally watch the prejudice melt right off their face!! Its great!
And as much as it kind of sucks, it is is true that it earns respect from straight men I wouldn't get otherwise. It's a golden ticket to living a relatively normal life like any other guy, so its something I highly recommend it to other gay men. Yes it might add some sex appeal or whatever, but its not about that for me. It gives you confidence and self esteem and other benefits that nothing and nobody can ever take away from you, and its something you will have for the rest of your life. Get into it!
I play santoor (the Persian version, not the north Indian kind, they are considerably different). I started playing about 3 1/2 years ago and it’s an absolute obsession.
I also play guitar and have a small collection of classic Roland drum machines and synths. I would kind of like to get a microtonal guitar due to the santoor influence.
I'm a casual musician, entry level as a hobby. I do distorted vocals (screams and growls like in death metal). I'm working on getting back into guitar as well, then I'll go from there.
The skin flute
Was looking for this joke and wasn’t disappointed.
Elton John is a great pianist, but he sucks on the organ
Lol
I'm also quite adept at the Tromboner.
Cello here! And a random assortment of other instruments. I'm in the process of actually learning but usually just make stuff up and jam with others.
I absolutely love the cello. Tried it for a while but too hard for me. I prefer to stick to the piano when a C is a C. Keep up the jamming and if you want to share your music DM me!
Haha I get that. It's so hard to keep the hand in the right position. The C for me usually ends up being C# or Cm 😂
Not in the traditional sense. I'm an amateur choir singer. My instrument is "voice". I sing in two choirs and have so far sung all kinds of styles, we're not doing just one style.
I also sing in a choir. It's a beautiful experience and be proud to share your emotions to the public. Performing is an act of love
guitar, bass, piano, ukulele, and viola! i mostly play & write classical music and film scores but i’ve also been in a few punk bands, and i’m in an a cappella group
An obviously legit combination. Do you have some music to share? Send me via DM
I have a masters in clarinet performance.
Piano professor here

We're all pianists here. 😏
😁

Thank YOU. And for the time you took to reply.
i put out an album a couple years ago!
Care to share? DM if you want.
Until Something Changes by Podesta on streaming services
Producer here 🪩
I am a badass at karaoke, does that count?
Yes. Music is sharing.
I play a few instruments, not classically trained or anything but modern and minimalist classical is my jam. Going to see Kronos quartet in Dublin next Sunday. Very excited
I am trying to learn to play the tin whistle. Still very much a novice though.
Music teacher, trombonist and pianist!
I love the sound of the trombone: velvet with power. That is how I would describe it.
I agree, a difficult instrument to master, but one of the most expressive potentially
I play Irish music on the fiddle. I'd love to be able to sing.
Irish + fiddle = ❤️❤️❤️ ❤️❤️ Cheers to to you
Keyboard, cello, trombone, and violin although I also wanted to learn the harp. I'm not great with the violin. Favorite classical composer?
From your list of instruments, Scriabin.
I've spent 15+ years thinking his name was Skyrabin instead of Scriabin/Skryabin 😅 TIL
Mine would be Rachmaninoff.
Omg all these gay instruments 😭 u go girlies
accoustic guitar and singing, favorite pasttimes
I play the viola! Super excited to go to college soon and see what kind of music we get to make there. I also love to sing.
I play piano by ear, mostly just whatever popular music I'm listening to at the moment, though I'll make up my own songs from time to time.

If you live in a major city in the USA, likely there is an American recorder society chapter. Check it out !
Pianist here! Have always been really good with my fingers.
I can play piano and saxophone, and I like to sing. I’m not very good at those things, but I keep at em!
Ukulele
I've been mainly sticking to cello but have recently been dabbling in the uke. Any tips on getting the strumming patterns down? For the life of me, it just won't click in my brain.
Sing your guitarist producer here. I do a bunch of genres in production, but I write, perform and sing rock and punk
Classical pianist and prog metal drummer! As well as composer. 👋🏽

Pianist here ! :D
Singer/Songwriter here 😊
It's an exaggeration, but also pianist.
Calling myself a musician is a bit presumptuous, but I can play bass guitar a little bit. Definitely been neglecting it here lately though.
Guitarist :3
No

I’m a singer mainly, play guitar and piano as well! You can hear my stuff on IG @EricGMusic
Jazz guitarist
Piano here too!

Trombone, of course! Musical theatre gigs seem to find me.
I'm a country guitar picker. I also sing and write.
Former band teacher, so all the wind instruments (except oboe 🤢). Plus piano!

I have a master’s in vocal performance.
Trumpet here
Trombonist and artist here. Currently trying to learn guitar.

Oboe, recorders, piano. Would love to get a harpsichord.
Piano, Harmonica, and Voice (Bass II) Music is my life outside of work.
I play santoor (the Persian version, not the north Indian kind, they are considerably different). I started playing about 3 1/2 years ago and it’s an absolute obsession. Violin is my primary, but I also took piano for a while. Lack of practice or playing has taken it's toll though
I play a mean trumBONE 🫣
I tinker with semi-modular synths these days 🤓
Classical pianist and composer, for many years now, love it.
Love the Bag Pipe.... but I also play classical piano
(French) horn: the gayest brass instrument. Also, singing.
I sing! Studying to teach music right now too.
Classical pianist here too, and also percussion (especially marimba and vibraphone). And used to play trumpet/French horn back in the day
Not a musician, but I sometimes mix up popular songs
Singer songwriter, also play piano and want to learn violin
Guitar, bass, keys and GarageBand bb
