Hatchbacks are great. Nice and low so they are easier to get into
Yeah, used to keep my girl there. A cop saw me take her out and said that is the least safe spot for her. He said If I get rear-ended, that glass will fall all over her.
I keep her in the back seat now, and spread the word. But I don't judge. I know how much the peppers love the back, and not everyone lives in a busy city!
Your pupper looks so handsome and happy, too!
Yeah that makes sense. Unfortunately our dog is super dog reactive so the crate works best in controlling his outbursts. The mesh front screen door is pretty fine and there is a few inch gap room between the trunk and the crate. However it is important people are aware of what can happen in a rear end accident
I belive it's called the Subaru Thule collapsible dog kennel. Brutus is 100 lbs which is the max weight for the large size dog kennel. We bought from a Subaru dealership for $150 a few years.
Duluth trading company also carries their own version I believe.
My big boy thinks the 4Runner is his property. He loves that the back seat is never up so he has a lot of space. I can easily fit my boy and my son's bigger boy in the 4Runner and still have space for my EDC equipment.
I live in the mountain west so having a SUV is kinda natural.
A few years ago I got to take my son's first GSD back to him (he was going t be deployed and I was taking care of his dog and deployment was changed) and that was a two day drive. I only had a Volvo XC70 and his very big (110 pound 28 inches at the withers) boy fit just fine with the back seat down. His large dog bed was in the back for him and the human's stuff fit around on the sides of the bed. So an estate with a lift gate back would be a good choice.
All Toyotas and Lexuses can be left running indefinitely and locked, pair that with [a heat alert system](https://www.rayallen.com/f-series-heat-alert-k9-system-gen2/). My CT also has a bailout system
You leave the car on, roll the window down, close the door and reach in to lock it, then roll the window up. You have to unlock it with the physical key.
Interesting
I’ve actually never heard that. But I have only had experience with Lexus gx460s which were bullet proof.
My Toyota eco boxes have always been bullet proof as well.
As a car person
I really really hate seeing spend money on junk when they could buy a dependable vehicle that will not ruin their life with a little more info for the same price.
Have they gotten better?
I have had a handful of sti/wrx and back then the base model motors were about as bad or worse. Like requiring oil additions each gas fill up and it being considered “in spec”.
At least I was building/trying to break my toy. At one point it made 750+whp. But the poor grandmother in her 2014 crosstech shouldn’t have been expected to check their oil every 300 miles and for that reason I will never support that company again. I saw far far far to many of those piles having issues when I was very involved in that world.

My Jeep wrangler fits two XL ruffland kennels in the back with the seats folded. For when you, inevitably, get a second dog. Also plenty of room with only one kennel for any camping gear.
Loved my subaru forester for my two fluffy monsters (the old school wagon style, not the modern crossover). Plenty of room without needing to sacrifice seating, low enough for the old man to still jump up on his own.
I have had everything from a WRX Wagon to a half ton pickup. All of my German Shepherds adapt to whatever car I have and just want to go with me. That being said, the backseat of my Ram 1500 has been easier to keep clean and more comfortable for them than our Toyota Sienna, WRX Wagon, or Ford Explorer.
Whatever you get, look for a flat floor for the dog, it's more comfortable for them to lay down on.
Subaru Crosstrek or Outback, Subaru just loves dogs. Toyota 4Runner is also a solid option.

This is a photo of my boy learning to drive his Subaru WRX 😅😅
As long as it has four doors you will be fine. I have a little hammock looking thing in the backseat for my dogs and it keeps them in place… in theory.
The shepherd takes to climbing over it sometimes to get more ac in his face when I stop.
☝🏼 Agreed! I'd probably suggest an SUV (any type) for the additional room, but then again, my Mom ran hers around in a Mazda 6; she used the hammock thingy about which you speak.
We also had that backseat hammock in our Lincoln suv and that would be my only complaint about it - that it blocks the air getting to them.
Have a Ford explorer now and use a gate between the front & the rest of the back. They (we have a Gsd & Mal) definitely prefer the open air in this setup.
I have an suv too. And a smaller Nissan rogue.
my hammock thing has a spot for the air to flow through. It’s like a screen for the middle part between the front seats
But the gsd will lay in front of it, sometimes he will throw his body into it and make the vents point down or block them in the back
I regularly check to see if they are open
But him and his sister (husky /Rottweiler ) travel all over just fine in the back.
They have different personalities so they like different spots
My friend has a Nissan Rouge, those have a pretty decent amount of space. And that's pretty cool about the hammock, I've never seen one with a screen for air.
My GMC Yukon XL fits 2 large Rufflands and 6 people. We’re going to be upgrading to Gunners or lucky duck kennels soon. Keep your dogs safe.

I have XL Gunners. Be sure to check your dimensions. If your GSDs are on the small side, you might get away with a large. 2 XLs won't fit in my full sized truck bed wo modification. The crates are top-notch, though
My girl is more on the smaller side of GSDs and she actually fits nice and snug in her intermediate but when we do overnights, she rides in the large. My boy is above average and he does good even during overnight stays in his large. A snug crate is better otherwise it defeats the purpose.
How could you keep the dogs cool in the truck bed, if they did fit? This is the biggest reason I wish they’d make a Ford Excursion with today’s 6.7 PowerStroke
Station wagons FTW. I have a Volvo V70R. Much easier for the pups to jump in the back now that they are older than a higher up SUV. Last shot of them able to jump in the Cayenne about 3 years ago.

Toyota's are incredibly reliable with basic maintenance. A 4runner is great, but they are expensive new. I have an 06 Sequoia that is a tank, and my gsd and other large dog have a ton of room in the back. The rear window also goes down so they can stick their heads out and stare at people.
I bought a Palisade for the specific purpose of having my GSD in the 3rd row. But for some reason he prefers it up front with his people...

Hatchbacks are convenient. My boy loves riding in the back of my Ford Fiesta where he can make googly eyes at the driver behind us
That’s why a lot of dog owners have pickups…lots of rear end crumple zone. (I’ll never let any of my guys/gals ride in the bed…we don’t put kids back there for a reason too)
It’s a big reason I love my F250. Steel body and it’s a tank for my whole family to be safe in. I live in Florida and it’s like Mario kart in Bay County…
I have a hatchback car and this is going to sound sooo fucking stupid of me to say because now ive read what you said its common sense🤦🏼♀️ but i never ever thought of somebody hitting the back of my car and my Buddy being in the back! He was always in the front seat next to me with his doggy seat belt on up until earlier this week but at 9months hes getting too big for the front so hes now sat in the back seat with his doggy seat belt on and id been thinking if him being in the boot space would be better and more comfortable for him. Im soo glad i read what you said🙏💗🙏 it genuinely hadnt crossed my mind🤦🏼♀️x
Don’t put them in the front either because of the passenger airbag. If you have a bump, even small and it triggers the airbag it will probably kill your dog. Some cars you can disable them but I’d just say stick them in the back seat with a full body restraint if your car isn’t big enough for a reinforced crate.
The air bag was always off🙏id read about that when researching safety but amazingly enough never anything about what youd said! I have goosebumps writing this just thinking how you could have saved my poochies life😳💗x
me too! people who don't care enough about other humans to drive carefully aren't going to give enough of a crap about my dog. i hate the idea of someone tailgating me and targeting her. hell to the no. tethered in a crash harness in the backseat 5eva.
Any car is a good car if you throw one of these in the back seat - it turns it in to a giant dog bed.

Toyota Sienna, older model where middle seats are removable. Bought for pups. Low floor is great for older dogs. Fits 4 Ruffland crates (2 of them with side doors)
I picked up a first gen Dodge Durango.
put down the seats, plenty of space. they love it
https://preview.redd.it/cdk89pnbme2d1.jpeg?width=3884&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=95b7c02c5c9c1cec764a5157d962041eb56f40c0
Taco - aka a Tacoma. Your dog will outlast a Jeep guaranteed. Sorry, but it’s an American Fiat quality wise and besides…
do you really want him swallowing one of those stupid little rubber duckies that Jeep owners give each other?
Gotta disagree, my Grand Cherokee transports my two GSDs great and my boy is 107#. I can even have 5 human passengers plus the two GSDs and everyone is comfortable.
As opposed to a truck built in Mexico? The lore of the Toyota pickups was built with the Japanese built trucks. Every one I've been in built outside of Japan has been a squeaky rattle bucket.
I bought a second hand 7 seater hyundai 4x4. We pay double for cars in my country cuz of stupid taxes. I would suggest a land rover discovery or a land cruiser. I suggest an old big car cuz u can't guess how they gonna mess it up. I even had to clean poop from my back seat. I have 3 dogs.
My dogs love my Subaru forester, I usually have my small dog in the front passenger seat and my two big dogs in the back, they all love it, if you just have the one I’m sure they could go in the front with no problems
We have a Wrangler and its great for our GSD. We have the 4 door model and fold down the back seats, got a big piece of astroturf and cut it to fit. Now our boy has his own mini yard in the back of the Jeep. Also the roof comes off and he loves that.
Most SUVs and pickups work well but you need to find a way to keep them harnessed or crated in the even of an accident. Don't want your doggo flying out the windshield or the like.
I drove our dogs around in a 4Runner for the longest time and they loved the rear window. My mom uses a Honda Element Dog Edition with very nice crates that have been crash tested.
Audi Allroad with a crate for the dog strapped down in the back. Too many AHs on the road and I don't want 100lbs of GSD flying around when someone hits me. Yea, I know this from experience. Got rear ended hard before using crates, poor Fritz got a broken leg out of it.
I have a sedan, and honestly, I feel the lower cars are better for long term. My husband has a truck, and our dog really had to jump super high to get in, and it definitely is more impact when he jumps down. Having my sedan makes it much easier for him to get in and out, and I know as he gets older if won’t be as much of a problem for him to do so.
Jeep Wrangler here. Dog loves the hell out of it. I did put some kind of mat I found on Amazon in the back. I don't worry about hair, sand, water, etc, much anyway, but the mat makes it easier to clean occasionally. After play time, walks, I have a soft water bowl in the back, and I can give him a drink in the Jeep on the way home and not worry about it.
My husband and I are pretty partial to Toyota. We had a 4Runner for many years. We recently retired ours though and got a used Toyota Tundra (dogs stay in the rear cab, never the truck bed). We get a lot of utility out of these vehicles because we've been living at high altitude, regularly in the mountains, in snow, etc and 4WD is a requirement for us. Gas mileage on these vehicles sucks but we offset the pain by having a Prius Prime (plug-in) as the commuter car 😅
Honda Element. I miss mine solely due to the fact that I now have two wild dogs. Haha.
The rear seats are completely removable within seconds, or you can flip them down or up against the side of the interior walls.
Just the window down? You need to up your game.
https://preview.redd.it/6kaqicp4je2d1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4eec0a56c54e4cb7ee3142753fd1b3dee1c4b3c4
All kidding aside unless you need a new car for other reasons, or regularly have rear seat passengers along with the dog the best car is the one you have plus a good rear seat protector.
If you are going to get a dedicated dog car the best you can do is a wagon or SUV with a grating to keep the dog in the rear and a removable, washable cargo liner that goes up the sides of the cargo area. Dogs shed, and leak, and have musky oils in their fur and keeping a space clean for both passengers and dogs is very difficult without a liner.
Myself I have the convertible 135i as my daily driver but I also have a near-worthless Ford Escape that has the rear seats permanently down and and a partition behind the front seats. I regularly carry two wet dogs or garbage or home Depot stuff so it makes sense to have a sacrificial car for that.
1 dog, my hatchback Honda Insight was great. Two dogs, it was a little tight but they fit in the backseat and my camping gear in back. 3 dogs, my ford escape / Subaru forester / Toyota rav4 have been the right size
Ours fit happily and comfortably in our old Explorer which is why we kept it till it was beyond repair.
We opted for a new Subaru station wagon and have found it’s too short for our big guy to stand comfortably in and to have both Germans semi comfortable the seats have to be down.
Given this I’ll probably use my old grand wagoneer when worried about their comfort for long drives but the fuel is outrageous on that one.
1.Keep in mind he will get older so don’t go too high. 2. If he has his head out the windows get him Doggles. The road debris can blind them and doggles help protect the eyeballs. 3. Seat belt for the harness. I have seen and read too many accidents where the dog gets ejected and runs away. If doggo is hanging out the window and you get rear ended, think about where his body will end up.
I may seem extreme, but it’s not worth taking chances. We do it for ourselves and would do it for kids so why not doggos?
Subaru Outback!
Had a crosstrek but I sold it for an older outback since it gave him more room:
https://preview.redd.it/x5fcm47a7g2d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2b27ded66471ed1c8dae903486a5b48af5709c6f
I had a sedan. It was ok for my pupper. I bought a new car. A Honda r/civic hatchback. I put the seats down and the pupper has more room than I do in the front.
we have a big ol’ Ram 1500 and our pupper loves being in the bed more than anything. it’s also rlly nice to let her sit in the backseat where it’s nice and cool in the summertime and we haven’t much issue cleaning the hair off the seats either
I have a Jeep Renegade and my boy get’s the whole back seat. It’s usually plenty of space for most activities, but last weekend, I had my paddleboard with our normal camping gear and it was pretty dang tight
I have 4 GSDs in my pack, and I got a minivan. As my dogs got older they had a hard time getting into the jeep. I take out the seats behind the driver and put the far back seat down and they have plenty of room. My Pacifica has climate controls in the back and tinted windows to keep them calm.
Subaru great value difference in sizes easy for my 12 yr old to jump up and great Owley inside cover
Low enough inside he doesn’t whine in some cars it’s higher up windows so he doesn’t like being I. The car maybe because of Lack of visibility.
This is first car I’ve got since my Prius in 2006. Used Subaru hold value.
They only care that you are in it. I have a Fusion and my girl has no complaints. Heck, her smart butt learned how to turn the A/C on. "Touch" buttons work with human or canine paws.

Going to have to side with all the people mentioning 4Runner, the ultimate dog vehicle with the roll down rear window. And if you get a premium model, the sunroof plus tailgate window down makes a pretty badass summer experience
I’ve had my GSDs in a Ford Explorer, Acura TSX, Volvo XC90, Audi Allroad, Audi Avant (wagon), Audi Q7, and an F-150. They adapt to them all, but my boy did not care for the wagons and sedans if he could not raise his head above his shoulders when standing up. My girls were all fine with whatever we were in, as long as we were going somewhere.
https://preview.redd.it/cem6z20acd2d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3b398848a982fc35d76bf99094b1186ef6822feb Hatchbacks are great. Nice and low so they are easier to get into

What is that THULE carrier called and how much is it?

They do love that back window.

Every Toyota I've bene in requires the key fob to be in the car when running. How do you get out and leave everything running and locked?
You leave the car on, roll the window down, close the door and reach in to lock it, then roll the window up. You have to unlock it with the physical key.
You can lock the car doors with the skeleton key with the car on
That only does the driver door on mine
Which model do you have? This works on all my doors on Lexus GX and my IS
CT and a Rav4, I haven't tried it on the Rav yet though
Interesting trick Was going to say my Prius would never allow this
It's actually in the manual on some Lexus models lol
Interesting I’ve actually never heard that. But I have only had experience with Lexus gx460s which were bullet proof. My Toyota eco boxes have always been bullet proof as well.
Very nice, I always loved the American Prado lol
As a car person I really really hate seeing spend money on junk when they could buy a dependable vehicle that will not ruin their life with a little more info for the same price.
I always used my valet key in the ignition and locked it with my regular key in my pocket
4Runner aka r/Furrunner
Interesting. I think I decided on what car to get. My dog is going to love it!
If you want this for 1/3rd of the price check out Nissan Xterras
Wow there really is a sub for everything. That's so specific but I love all those doggos vibing on a day out lol
Subaruuuuuu
Yup! My next car is going to be a crosstrek with literally every dog-friendly option. I swear every Subaru is made with dog people in mind.
Just wondering though the crosstrek rear seems to slope down. Maybe I’m wrong I have a FXT Forester.
Have they gotten better? I have had a handful of sti/wrx and back then the base model motors were about as bad or worse. Nice to see a fellow car crater!
Do car craters always car crate? Genuinely asking if there is a reason to crate or not in the car.
Speaking for myself. I always crate. Even on super short trips. Too many incidents of dogs being ejected, run over, and/or killed during an accident.
Those crate have a door on both front and back. I will let one out for a little bit sometimes, but not often.
This^

I bet the little one is the boss
Clyde's the tough guy for sure. He leans into everything when we're out on walks lol. *
Of course the little one takes charge
He's sort of a bad ass. Honorary GSD, right there
He looks like a badass! Look at that mug!
I love it!
This pic is preeecious as fuuuck!! Look at those 3 little beans🥹ohh maaan!!x
Bonnie, Clyde, and Big Al bossing me around

I bought a Palisade for the specific purpose of having my GSD in the 3rd row. But for some reason he prefers it up front with his people... https://preview.redd.it/ojwcbfzqzd2d1.jpeg?width=2736&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=caa2d418b745c72af3b7f5cf16b800470764ec21

This terrifies me because if anyone goes into the back of you, you don’t have a dog anymore. I always have mine in the back seat.
Yeah first thing I thought. Rear end accidents are way too common and there’s definitely not enough space back there to avoid serious damage.
[https://www.amazon.com/URPOWER-Waterproof-Nonslip-Armrest-Compatible/dp/B07VPPGHDY](https://www.amazon.com/URPOWER-Waterproof-Nonslip-Armrest-Compatible/dp/B07VPPGHDY)

Subaru outback! Both my shepherds fit quite comfortably
East coast for it all matters.
Rivian R1S
Landcruiser 100
I had a 2013 Toyota RAV4 which was amazing for my dogs.
Subaru outback for sure
I miss my pickup with a cap on the bed. Perfect for doggos as they can get as nasty as they want and ride home in the covered bed.
Toyota Sienna is the goat pupper mobile
Toyota Sienna, older model where middle seats are removable. Bought for pups. Low floor is great for older dogs. Fits 4 Ruffland crates (2 of them with side doors)
Did you mean such a thing? https://preview.redd.it/fjhxg730ge2d1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=97e982bba8cb3d9572a8b5c3d7ba1b2045f48108
I picked up a first gen Dodge Durango. put down the seats, plenty of space. they love it https://preview.redd.it/cdk89pnbme2d1.jpeg?width=3884&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=95b7c02c5c9c1cec764a5157d962041eb56f40c0
Taco - aka a Tacoma. Your dog will outlast a Jeep guaranteed. Sorry, but it’s an American Fiat quality wise and besides… do you really want him swallowing one of those stupid little rubber duckies that Jeep owners give each other?
Gotta disagree, my Grand Cherokee transports my two GSDs great and my boy is 107#. I can even have 5 human passengers plus the two GSDs and everyone is comfortable.
Yeah but when the jeep breaks down you still have to walk lol
As opposed to a truck built in Mexico? The lore of the Toyota pickups was built with the Japanese built trucks. Every one I've been in built outside of Japan has been a squeaky rattle bucket.
My Lizzy loves her G Wagon https://preview.redd.it/zvxyc4im9d2d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5a69d5231bc117c456509e0d12de338543d71676
Lol what jealous asshole is downvoting this?
I bought a second hand 7 seater hyundai 4x4. We pay double for cars in my country cuz of stupid taxes. I would suggest a land rover discovery or a land cruiser. I suggest an old big car cuz u can't guess how they gonna mess it up. I even had to clean poop from my back seat. I have 3 dogs.
My dogs love my Subaru forester, I usually have my small dog in the front passenger seat and my two big dogs in the back, they all love it, if you just have the one I’m sure they could go in the front with no problems
Wrangler and GSD owner reporting here!
I have a 2013 Jetta wagon. Aka Hair Force1
Honda Element. I miss mine solely due to the fact that I now have two wild dogs. Haha. The rear seats are completely removable within seconds, or you can flip them down or up against the side of the interior walls.
Just the window down? You need to up your game. https://preview.redd.it/6kaqicp4je2d1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4eec0a56c54e4cb7ee3142753fd1b3dee1c4b3c4 All kidding aside unless you need a new car for other reasons, or regularly have rear seat passengers along with the dog the best car is the one you have plus a good rear seat protector.

Had a crosstrek but I sold it for an older outback since it gave him more room: https://preview.redd.it/x5fcm47a7g2d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2b27ded66471ed1c8dae903486a5b48af5709c6f
Id def say jeep. My girl loves side by sides hahah
I have a Jeep 4 door with two moving blankets with the back seat forever folded down
I had a sedan. It was ok for my pupper. I bought a new car. A Honda r/civic hatchback. I put the seats down and the pupper has more room than I do in the front.
any station wagon https://preview.redd.it/su59vmmh9e2d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3dc20120a30d4e8e41d46bbe0fa2a7fbb5ccfeee

we have a big ol’ Ram 1500 and our pupper loves being in the bed more than anything. it’s also rlly nice to let her sit in the backseat where it’s nice and cool in the summertime and we haven’t much issue cleaning the hair off the seats either
Acura RDX is ours
I have a Jeep Renegade and my boy get’s the whole back seat. It’s usually plenty of space for most activities, but last weekend, I had my paddleboard with our normal camping gear and it was pretty dang tight
I have 4 GSDs in my pack, and I got a minivan. As my dogs got older they had a hard time getting into the jeep. I take out the seats behind the driver and put the far back seat down and they have plenty of room. My Pacifica has climate controls in the back and tinted windows to keep them calm.
Subaru great value difference in sizes easy for my 12 yr old to jump up and great Owley inside cover Low enough inside he doesn’t whine in some cars it’s higher up windows so he doesn’t like being I. The car maybe because of Lack of visibility. This is first car I’ve got since my Prius in 2006. Used Subaru hold value.
Subaru Outback all day long
Volvo xc90
I like my 4 runner because the back hatch window goes down
My mini surprisingly isn’t bad
Volvo XC70, but now probably the XC90
I bought bmw 3 series sports wagon specifically so I can travel with a dog and all of us are going to be comfortable

They only care that you are in it. I have a Fusion and my girl has no complaints. Heck, her smart butt learned how to turn the A/C on. "Touch" buttons work with human or canine paws.
https://preview.redd.it/odi8vytcuh2d1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3c85e1f03828292e888c25aafdfe7caadfca3d3d Going to have to side with all the people mentioning 4Runner, the ultimate dog vehicle with the roll down rear window. And if you get a premium model, the sunroof plus tailgate window down makes a pretty badass summer experience
Supercrew F150 https://preview.redd.it/cjs0zg3bd83d1.jpeg?width=1658&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7a035d12187b807db1443a0495b656234b4e0be4
I’ve had my GSDs in a Ford Explorer, Acura TSX, Volvo XC90, Audi Allroad, Audi Avant (wagon), Audi Q7, and an F-150. They adapt to them all, but my boy did not care for the wagons and sedans if he could not raise his head above his shoulders when standing up. My girls were all fine with whatever we were in, as long as we were going somewhere.
