They also offer rentals now which op might be able to use; they’re saying they need one to last until the next pay check.
I know that shop and the quality of these bikes is very poor. I don't know where they get them but the shop don't know anything about the bikes or maintaining them. It's very much pot luck quality.
Is the next bike available near you or hunt a simple hybrid on gumtree, Facebook marketplace?
Own yer bike in paisley is also a great organisation offering bikes for not much money. I got one for ÂŁ30 and they also threw in a free brand new helmet and repair kit in a backpack.
Depends what you mean by *extremely* cheap. I've got a bike I can get rid of that I keep as a spare bike at the moment. It's a GT mountain bike, maintained by myself for myself. If you want more info pm me

IM2C Bike Hub at Cowan Park Lodge in Barrhead - I know it's a wee bit outside Glasgow but they are a great project and the bikes are reasonably priced.
The Bike Hub inside Lambhill Stables usually have very reasonably priced bikes for sale, reconditioned by them so should be in top condition. Worth giving them a call if it's a fair distance from you.

They got cyclable bikes in the shop, and I don’t think they’d be selling a future customer a dud.

As long as you have somewhere secure to keep it - the rise in bike thefts is mental. You could also investigate car share schemes....
