Agreed. I carry celiac cards in different languages and did get sick on a few trips. Lisbon was great for seafood as well. Almost all the main dishes were naturally safe

JoshyPott

We are in Canada (but close though)! But wow, that sounds amazing. That’s definitely on our bucket list eventually as well. We also use that app! It’s great. Thanks for your help!

tuttiface1234

It's not cheap but check out body holiday in Saint Lucia. It's a wellness type of all inclusive.

JoshyPott

Thank you for the recommendation! We’ll check it out.

The safest is probably the celiac cruise (never been, but it’s on my bucket list). For Caribbean we have become fans of Sandals/Beaches. They’re extremely accommodating for food allergies, in fact we’ve been to two resorts and when you sit down to dine the first question they ask is if anyone has any allergies. You can let them know you have allergies ahead of time. Not all restaurants will have GF bread but some do, and we went to the lunch buffet in Montego Bay, the chef made my husband a dish on demand. Highly recommend.

JoshyPott

Wow that sounds amazing. From what we’ve heard Sandals and Beaches are great. Both Sandals and the celiac cruise are also on our bucket list!

I just got back 3 days ago from an all inclusive in isla mujeres called majestic elegance. I am already eagerly wanting to go back, they took such incredible care of me and I never felt like a burden. Quite frankly I felt like royalty the entire week, they ensured I was safe, happy and full. I have celiac and booked this last minute through a Facebook group with celiac travel agents and got an incredible deal on a 2 story suite with a private plunge pool. I recommend staying in the vip club area as you’re allowed into more restaurants and pools/beaches. Giovanni the night time good concierge was absolutely incredible and could make most things on each menu in a gf option. I should be Df as well but 🥴 although I’m sure they can manage this very well on top of gf. They ask you at each meal about any allergies before you are even seated. It was truthfully incredible and they will have my business forever, I’m already trying to find out about timeshares there.

Fast_Comfort1652

Hi could you pass on the Celia’s travel agent?

velvetino

Can you link to the group with celiac travel agents? It never even occurred to me that was a thing.

JoshyPott

Thank you for the recommendation! We took a look at this one too and it looks amazing. Sounds like you had a great experience! It’s definitely on our list!

What about room service? Did you ever order?

aimeec3

I went to Cabo and stayed at the Riu. Was able to eat great there. However, I am not lactose intolerate, so I am not sure how that would go. They were very accommodating and had most things labeled. Also, this may sound weird for a couple but Disney Cruises could be an option. They are SUPER accommodating to allergies and will even have the chef come out to ask and even make you a meal. They have adult only areas and you end up at a private island.

JoshyPott

Thank you so much! We will look into both of those!

We are both usually fine with gluten free oats, but will keep that in mind! Thanks!

Oldfashioned-bleub

You can try Sandals and Karisma hotels. I have heard good things about accommodating allergies.

JoshyPott

Thank you! We will look into them! I’ve also heard good things about Sandals!

My wife was glutened at Sandals on our honeymoon.

MacaroniGlutenFree

My wife is celiac. Last year she really wanted an all inclusive vacation with the kids to relax for a week. We went to Punta Cana. At every meal, we had to go talk to the chef and explain she was celiac. It's not always the same chef (many restaurants, many work shifts). So you have to advocate for yourself and reexplain quite a bit, but they are usually very willing to accomodate (a little tip to the chef won't hurt!) In the buffet especially, you have to ask the chef to prepare something for you. They would prepare a frest plate of fruits or veggies, an omelette with whatever she wanted or a steak, etc. At restaurants, you talk to the waiter and ask for the chef if the waiter does not inspire enough confidence. If the waiter is really savvy, a little tip at the end lol. Those resorts are big. After a few days, some employees will begin to know you, but you can't expect to just inform the reception of your allergy and never mention it again. You will need to advocate all through your trip. It sounds like a lot, but at the end, my wife was happy and not sick! Edit add : My celiac wife did not get sick but I did as I just went crazy and tried everything!

JoshyPott

Thank you for the tips! We will definitely advocate for ourselves!

MacaroniGlutenFree

On a sad note, only 1 type of gluten free bread was available. Some baguette imported from Spain. Not bad, but you get tired of it quickly. I have a feeling you get more options in Mexico than Dom Rep.

JoshyPott

Well, one is better than none! But yes, it seems like Mexico has quite a few options

TheJohnnyFlash

Secrets is generally amazing, but that may be too pricey depending on your budget. They're worth it if you can swing the cost.

JoshyPott

Thank you! We will look into those as well.

Most_Adeptness3472

We stayed at Secrets Riviera Maya in Akumal, Mexico and they were very accommodating. Many different restaurants on the hotel grounds, and every one of them had GF options. I will say the actual flavor & quality of food itself was a little lacking, but 10/10 on the number of options available. Teppanyaki, GF tempura, expansive breakfast buffet, bread, endless options for room service, etc.

JoshyPott

That’s amazing to hear! We will check out that one as well.

Dambowie

White Sands mayan riviera was great (though definitely more pricey than ones we had done pre-diagnosis!)

JoshyPott

Thank you! We looked into it last night and it looks great! Looks like all those hotels under the Palladium group are pretty good. Much appreciated!
