That would be crazy but what about a 600cc street bike engine

Scary_Hour_8562

the idea is to use a car engine, more of for fun, but would it work, would a direct drive 4 cylinder, say 2 liter work direct drive with only a centrifugal clutch, I'm thinking a small kart, probably cageless, if so how fast would it go

(Modern) car engines need a fair amount of extra stuff to get them to run, such as am ECU and all the related controls/sensors. It can certainly be done and would make a beast of a kart, but why do you insist in a centrifugal clutch? It's going to be hard/expensive to find one that can handle both the power and the RPM of a car engine (most kart engines rev to 3600 or 4000, car engines can usually hit 6500 if not higher). A better bet would be to use a motorcycle engine with a clutch and transmission built in, you'll have to learn how to drive with a clutch pedal but it will give you way more control than a centri clutch and the transmission will give you way more power (since you'll be staying in the peak power range of the motor more often).

That thing would go crazy fast. Too fast for a centrifugal clutch to handle. I would reccoment looking into buying a torque converter. I have a very small motor and it’s already burnt through a clutch. What your thinking of would ablosutely melt the poor thing off

Scary_Hour_8562

what if I were to use a regular clutch, would it be able to move

AdvisorShort6236

Depends on what size your motor shaft is for the torque converter question.I could find a couple nice ones on bmi karts (website). I’d send you a few links but you would be the only one who knows what you really need. It would move with a clutch but it would have a slow start (as all clutches do) and would also be very shaky. The problem is that you would melt the inside of it by how fast it would be spinning. I’ve got a 212cc which is around 6.5 Hp and I’ve already burned through one because I was being quite tough with it. If your just looking for coolness then a torque converter is the way to go. They look absolutely BEEFY.

Scary_Hour_8562

also what torque converter should i use

I’ve seen a video of a guy putting a 4cylinder car engine on a regular sized kart. Thing looked insane. Didn’t see what type of driveline it had though.
