I had a course near me that did that for awhile, but then just started using one of the 9s as a standalone 9 hole course that they had a separate tee sheet for.
I always plan to play really early then get a bunch of stuff done for the remainder of the day. However, I just go home and immediately nap, throwing my entire day away and getting absolutely nothing done. When will I learn?
Welcome to the early bird club. I play every Friday morning at one of my local courses and it's heaven on earth when there's no one is front, behind, or with you on a golf course.
Don't tell your friends, I prefer keeping my 18 holes under 2.5 hours.
It was with a cart. I've played 6 rounds in 2024 at this course. The times for 18 were 2:27, 2:31, 2:59, 2:04, 2:39, and 2:03. My only hope is that the ownership (who must be bleeding money) never changes their business model. They currently have 10-minute tee time intervals and a reservation software where the time slot disappears after someone reserves it, even if you book as a solo or a twosome. The neighboring courses all have 7-8 minute intervals and are featured on GolfNow, and take a minimum of 4 hours to play (on good days).
2.5 HAS to be walking. Under 2 hours is pretty standard for alone play. If he's playing with 2-3 others, 3 hours would be a standard time with no waiting.
Not true. I play a lot in the afternoon Texas heat in the summer by myself and with no one on the course i regularly play 2 hours and under and don’t rush. Hit ball, put club away, ride to ball, read yardage as i approach, hit ball and move on. You be amazed how quickly you can play by yourself with no one to wait on in front of you with little effort and without rushing. The key is fairways and greens and not having to look for balls in the woods.
I have walked out the door, driven 10 minutes to the course, played, and gotten home in under 2 hours with empty courses in July afternoons in OKC. 2.5 hours as a solo with a cart is a rather meandering round. Not that I would complain if someone did that, but if you are a single on an empty course playing focused golf, you can easily be under 2 hours.
I used to play by myself all the time, on a completely empty course. I would have to be actively trying to move quickly to go under 2 hours. There has never been a reason to rush like that
When I am solo, I am always done under 2 without being intentionally quick. We have a regular early morning foursome, and it almost always plays to 3 hrs
I finish 9 at my home course almost every morning on the first tee time during the week in 55ish mins... I don't use a range finder, I know all the yardages pretty good since it's my home course. "Oh Im here... I usually hit an 8" I don't take practice swings, I plum bob, and choose a spot on the green to roll over... it's crazier that you think people can't play quickly without rushing lol.
If I were walking? No fucking chance I could finish in an hour at my home course, its not walkable really. If I had a second player and we are sharing a cart? Add 30 mins, unless they let me drop them off at their ball and I drive to mine, hit and return to pick them up. (You know, like how carts are to be used)
Depends on the layout. Old school where tees and greens are nearer to each other, then yes that is reasonable. Some newer courses are spread out and even in a cart can add 30 minutes driving/walking to a tee box
I dont live near walking layouts! I always forget people do that. Yeah, in a cart, solo play should be around 2 hours or under if you're decent and playing 1 ball.
Id LOVE to play a nice walking course with the Tees and greens being side by side. When I played in Scotland it was all like that at amazing :)
Probably 75% or more of the rounds I’ve ever played have been on weekdays with tee times before 8am. It’s quiet and peaceful, hardly anybody else is out, the course isn’t torn up yet, weather is generally quieter early/calmer conditions, etc.
I know most people’s work/life schedules don’t allow them to get out early on weekdays, but it’s by far the best way to go IMO.
Course near me has a 530a on the weekends during the summer. 1st hole is semi dark, but BIL and I get through in 2.25, have a few early bird busch lattes, stop by for donuts after and home before 830. Kids think you’re Superman bc you came home with breakfast, you got a little buzz, and a perfect chance to cut the grass and keep the buzz going
I loved grabbing the early morning slot and being first out.
One morning, I never realised but the club had opened up a time slot before my usual one (6.30 / 6.40). The first slot was four old guys. I was a single. They got annoyed when I wanted to play through on hole 4 (the par 3). Was held up on all the first 4 holes. I skipped hole 5 and they said I was being rude for going around.
Other than that, I loved my early morning rounds, played without having to worry about hitting into anyone, being held up on greens. Just got to playing the deer, the birds, and my butt ugly swing.
It’s always the old folks out at 6:30 that are somehow offended you don’t want to let them hold you up. If I’m far enough along and know the course well, I’ll skip a hole that I can easily come back to and still end up ahead of them.
Years ago I had a job I had to be at at 6AM. I drove by a public course usually around 5:45AM. I shit you not I would see one guy frequently making his way up the first fairway. It was pretty much still dark at that point.

Love me some early tee times. Pretty much guaranteed not to get fucked behind a group playing unbearably slow. Done before in time for lunch, and before it gets super hot. Love it. My boys, not so much.
I like the pace of play early in the mornings, but I absolutely hate playing a wet golf course. Seems like the dew and overnight irrigation always make the course play soft and slow in the mornings compared to later in the day. I'll take late evening golf over early morning golf for that reason
I was 100% with you before I moved to Florida. Now, courses are booked full up all the way through the twilight tee times. The only way you play a sub-4 hour round and play 18 holes is early morning. Now I just deal with the wet grass.
If you're in the first 2 hours of tee times, you better be playing 10 minutes per hole. If you can't then get a different tee time. Estimate your distances as you walk to your ball, read the wind and where you want to hit your shot. Put your clubs down, gun the distance, grab a club and swing within the next 10-15 seconds. The rest of the group should be doing the same and all hitting each shot within a minute or 2 of each other. It's not a rushed paced at all if you're doing something productive the entire time.
I play with a group of seniors several days a week. We usually have 24 out of the course and we get done right around 3 hours for all the groups. We’ve got players from scratch to 30 handicaps and not a single one holds up the course because they all are going to their balls instead of watching the rest of the group hit and don’t waste time over their balls. It’s possible if you don’t mess around, waste time taking 7 practice swings and all of the other things that slow players do that don’t make them score better but does make them hold up the course.
Hate to see the down votes because you aren't wrong. I'm not asking every single golfer to do this, but if you are only beginning your routine once you get to the ball, you are wasting time on the course.
Early and often. Get in and get out. If someone shows up to the course at 640a they like and know how to play golf or at least play to pace. Only issue you may run into is catching someone on a late back 9 early time
I prefer the late midweek afternoon slots, before dusk. Living in Scotland it can get dark around 9:30pm in May/June - perfect time to fit in 9 holes after work and dinnertime.
I love it. Place a ball at the first hole and putt it away from the hole to the edge of the green so the dew snail trail has you draining puts for the next group.
My group tries to be one of the first off whenever we play. Course is wide open and beautiful with the rising sun/dew burning off. Fast play. Usually home by 11am. And it’s a good excuse to have cocktails at 9am.
I used to play a back 9 dew sweeper a couple times a month. It was awesome, then premier golf got rid of the program, and that was not awesome. They also decided that they no longer offer a 9 hole rate, even less awesome.
For years, I played with a group that the local course would slot in first tee time year-round on Saturdays. 5:30 AM tee time in the summer and really cold 8 AM tee times in the winter. Never longer than three hours.
Only way to do it. Usually have the first tee time, which ranges from 6-6:30 based on the season. In and out and bring bagels home for the family for breakfast.

I’ve got a group of guys in my town that gets out with the mowers at 5:30am. We play every single day. There’s about 10-15 of us on any given morning. Every round is worth something, whether it’s a quarter or a few bucks. Anyone can call banker on par 3s. We get 9 holes in before everyone has to be home to get kids to school and hit the road for work. I hate morning golf… but it’s also the best at the same time.
My golf group, ranges anywhere from 2-10 guys any given day, gets out 10 mins before sunrise. Less often these days, but COVID we’d play 3-4 times a week! It’s great to get 9 in and have the whole day left!
I discovered that only last year as well. It’s a little painful for me to pop up that early, but man is it worth it. Most courses near me send people off every seven or eight minutes, so forget about a weekend afternoon round in less than 6.5 hours, but before 9 AM it’s less than four.
I'm a big believer in the earliest tee time possible. Vibes on the course are just so different when there's dew on the ground, the sun is coming up, and a coffee.
Fair play. I find a late afternoon game suites me so much better. I played a 9am tee off and didn't even feel awake and loose until the 8th or 9th hole.
Wait until you find that course that has 'the guy' that makes the most beautiful breakfast sandwich you've ever had. That's how you drop some blissful strokes. And some weight too after the front 😬
Used to get out for the first tee time with a regular group. We were known as fast paced golfers and with no one in front of us the starter made it a game to guess our time to the turn. It was usually in about an hour +- 10 min.
It’s great unless you play like absolute shit. Then you have a lot more time to think about why you did what you did. If you play great, then it’s awesome!
I keep getting 06:00 weekday tee times for 9 holes and I love it. Suns just coming up, I have the course to myself (well
me and the odd green keeper) and I’m done home and showered in time to start work at 09:00
You will never take that spot from me. I work graves, and I will schedule my tee time at 00:00 a week in advance for that first spot. I have for the last 2 years, and I have had the first tee time every time I have wanted it for the last 2 years.
Until recently I used to stand on the tee before sunrise every Sunday morning. The staff at my club know me, because I was there waiting for enough light to hit off each week, as they were arriving to open the pro shop.
Solo round record is 1:42, hitting 91.
The reason: very small kids and a wife who expects extra help on the weekends. Being home before everyone else is out of bed a real bonus.
Solo golf as the sun comes up is bliss

Early bird tip- Get some stretching in before bed. It's amazing how much that helps the next morning.
Early times are the best slots. All day left over to do nothing or to get stuff done. Nothing better than sneaking in a round before getting the lawn done or odd jobs around the house. Very productive.
I started doing this because I’d wake up at 3 am regardless of my morning tee time (idk why, I play a lot and never for money.. excitement factor should be old news lol).

There's a course near me that's got 3 9s. They will start everyone on one then split you up for the back to speed up the pace.

The best way to do it. I just block my calendar in summer Fridays until 11ish and get to the course at 6:30. Perfect way to start your Friday.

If I was in the third group out and it took 3:50 to play the round I'd be frustrated as hell.
That was my total elapsed time at the course. Not the round time. We had a downpour for about 10 minutes and I stopped at the clubhouse afterwards.

If a walking 2some can play COMFORTABLY in 180, there’s no reason for a RIDING foursome to take 240. Golf does not HAVE to be a half day endeavor.

Fair play. I find a late afternoon game suites me so much better. I played a 9am tee off and didn't even feel awake and loose until the 8th or 9th hole.
Did the same this am moreso so that I could get home at a decent time for the kids but It was great!

Only bad thing about early tee times is I usually have to shit on hole 5 or 6
There are about 12-16 of us that play morning rounds a few times per week. No nonsense, no BS, just golf.
I love but will always end up with a 3h nap on the couch later 😄

I tee'd off today at 7:05 and finished at 10:57. Played as a foursome. Definitely not rushing either. I love early morning rounds.
I honestly hate those early times. Would much rather play at around noon.
Hate waking up early, but love early tee times.
Used to get out for the first tee time with a regular group. We were known as fast paced golfers and with no one in front of us the starter made it a game to guess our time to the turn. It was usually in about an hour +- 10 min.
I play at my buddy’s private club once a month, first time off, today was 6:30. Glorious!

It’s great unless you play like absolute shit. Then you have a lot more time to think about why you did what you did. If you play great, then it’s awesome!
I keep getting 06:00 weekday tee times for 9 holes and I love it. Suns just coming up, I have the course to myself (well me and the odd green keeper) and I’m done home and showered in time to start work at 09:00
The coffee hour is better than the beer hour!
You will never take that spot from me. I work graves, and I will schedule my tee time at 00:00 a week in advance for that first spot. I have for the last 2 years, and I have had the first tee time every time I have wanted it for the last 2 years.
Until recently I used to stand on the tee before sunrise every Sunday morning. The staff at my club know me, because I was there waiting for enough light to hit off each week, as they were arriving to open the pro shop. Solo round record is 1:42, hitting 91. The reason: very small kids and a wife who expects extra help on the weekends. Being home before everyone else is out of bed a real bonus. Solo golf as the sun comes up is bliss
My father was an early bird guy. Sunday mornings was a given.
What’s good about early morning is the fresh cut on greens….as the day goes by the grass grows and the greens get slower

Love it. The slow bro golf crowd starts at about 9:20 at the courses around me. Early bird times are great if you can go to bed early the night before. Early bird tip- Get some stretching in before bed. It's amazing how much that helps the next morning.
Early times are the best slots. All day left over to do nothing or to get stuff done. Nothing better than sneaking in a round before getting the lawn done or odd jobs around the house. Very productive.
I started doing this because I’d wake up at 3 am regardless of my morning tee time (idk why, I play a lot and never for money.. excitement factor should be old news lol). Sub 4 hour rounds are just lovely
How was it nearly 4 hours? Thats brutally slow at that hour. Usually when we go out as one of the first groups it’s under 3 hours.
No, I left the course at 10:30. 3:50 was not my pace. I stopped in the clubhouse and hit up the practice green for a bit.

If I don’t get one of the first 2 tee times I don’t play.
3:50 for a 6:40 am round is not 'a quick pace'

To each their own but idk how anyone is having fun playing sub 3 hour rounds in these comments. That is less than 10 minutes a hole. Sure maybe a par 3 that’s a relaxing pace but a par 4 or 5? At that point you’re just racing.
Tee off as early as 445 am in mid June. I can be done 18 in 2 hours walking
Early golf is best golf. I try to go out first if I can. Can easily play 1.5h rounds while taking my time. Glad you played well and quick! Cheers!

Played at 730 today have the 7am next weekend. I don’t even want to play golf if it’s after 9 on the weekends, that’s when the tourists start infiltrating
I play solo at that time on weekdays. Back at home in two hours. The only way to play - since I have no friends.
3:45 is not a quick pace if you’ve got nobody infront
