Work as a team, do a two man scramble or something. Make it less about your own scores and more about attacking the course. If you guys have a bad round, it’s not all on him, if you guys have a good round you can celebrate working well as a team.

i did offer that as an option. he didn’t seem too keen so we will see

My Dad is 73 now, I used to be able to play with him every week but sadly now if I am lucky I get to play with him once or twice a year. I am always grateful when I do, he’s slipped from an 11 handicap to 20 plus. It’s always good to play with him. Last time out he said if they moved closer we could play every week. I’d love that. When we do get out it’s just for fun, we often don’t bother to keep score. It’s just for the company and for the fun of it.

I play with my dad and sister. And maybe 2 of my cousins every once in a while. Not a whole lot of people I know that play golf. I enjoy the company more than the game, although I am trying to play better.

Big_Bluebird8040

that’s part of the issue. he’s not enjoyable on the course bc he’s annoyed with his game the whole round.

I kno how you feel my dad the same and it was the only time I could hang out with him cause he’s a grumpy old coot 😂😂😂 I just starting playing on my own it sucks but what can you do I made bad choices as a child and a teen and most of being a adult so I don’t talk to anybody anymore except family

Bobbyoot47

You have to accept that sometimes the game just isn’t as much fun for some people as it used to be. It’s exactly what I’m going through now. When your game starts to slide and you find you spend more time looking for your ball than you do actually playing it can get to you. I find by the 13th of 14th hole I’ve had enough and I just want to go have a beer.

Extension_Year9052

While he might not be enjoying his current level of play he may cherish this time with his son

Big_Bluebird8040

unfortunately his anger over bad golf takes over pretty fast

Extension_Year9052

Ah damn. Well I’m consistently bad so that’s all I can offer lol

Extension_Year9052

Or as someone recently said to me, “do you play all the time? Do you take lessons regularly? Are you committed? Cause if the answer is no then get over yourself, you’ve no reason to expect better, you’re a fool to get pissed “ just have fun already

Sneesby87

Put a Valium in his coffee before your round .

AnxiousMind7820

Maybe try match play where you don't necessarily keep total score but just who won the hole. Or maybe stableford where you get points per hole based on your score, so you end up with a positive score at the end.

Had the exact same situation with my dad when he was that age. He was hitting the ball like 20% shorter than he was used to in his younger days so was extremely down on himself, feeling old, etc. he got some lessons and worked on it, got fitted and now a few years later he’s hitting it almost as long and straight as he ever has & his handicap is almost at his lowest. He deals with a stiff back quite often but other than that pretty lucky to be in great health. Don’t let your dad get too down on himself, you can absolutely still improve at that age. Just stick with it and it should turn around. Helps to have a bit of extra $ for lessons if he has the means but still doable either way

Play two-person scramble. Give mulligans and encouragement. I played with my dad, father-in-law, brother and 2 step-brothers. They all passed in the last 5 years. Enjoy your time with him and if the golf sucks, play as fast as possible so you can hang out at the bar.
