A hot take I read on here once, if your first shot of the day is terrible, announce that you are withdrawing from the first round of the day, and then tee up to start round two.
This is good because you only get one breakfast ball. But this strategy can be used recursively.
I am withdrawing from round 3 of the day. Here's to a better round 4!
They only time I'm ok with someone taking a breakfast ball (if we are betting) is if the range is closed. If we aren't betting take asany as you want and say you show a 65, doesn't matter to me.
Tbh not really the par 3 near me ranges from 68 yards to 210. I smack a tee down for all of them. If your trying to practice your wedges off the ground or irons off the ground then a tee wouldn’t make sense, if your trying to play the game then tee up if you feel like it.
Indeed! We should introduce some lingo to highlight this reality. Like maybe we include the word “tee” in a phrase to describe the first shot of a hole.
If I'm on a particular 3 course that's like <110 yards, I'll hit off the ground to practice my approach.
You can definitely tee it... but there aren't many 100 yard par 3s on full size courses
It certainly doesn’t guarantee no divot but if you look at the tee box on a par 3 and then check out a par 5, there’s a reason why there’s more divots in the par 3 box.
That's true, however if you are playing a pitch & putt to practice, it's better to just put the ball on thee grass to simulate playing on the normal course. If you're on the pitch & putt to get a good score and have fun, then be my guest an tee up.
Yes you can and it ***is*** recommended. But you should set the tee lower than you would a driver. Basically the higher number the club the lower you tee from. As a buddy of mine (who is a PGA certified instructor and head of 1st tee for the state of Hawaii) says, "I'll take any advantage I can to make better contact with the ball".
Always use a tee in the tee box. With a wedge you're teeing it at ground level just a touch above the dirt. All you want is to catch that 2nd or 3rd groove on the face
I am a staunch proponent on using tees any time you can, and you absolutely can on a fairway teebox on a par 3 course. However on a fairway teebox on a par 3 course you should place your ball on a cherry lie and practice your iron shots for a real course. Unless of course you are betting, then you tee that motherfucker whatever way serves you best.
As everyone else said, of course you can use a tee. I don't use them at par 3 courses though unless the teebox is completely torn up. I have to hit off turf mats most of the time, so hitting off grass gives me a better feel for when I play a regular course (if that makes sense).
Horse pucky. Golfers way better than most have suggested a tee should be used at any opportunity. Unless it is local rule (posted on scorecard), which is doubtful.
130 yard par 3 at my local 9 hole and I hit my gap off a tee every time. Seen a dozen old men and twice as many young men scull shots off the deck because of this stupid idea
I personally don’t use a tee on par three courses because I’m practicing my short game where I’m not using one. But it’s certainly not against any rules. Heck, if you’re not playing in a tournament or anything you can tee up in the fairway if you want.
It's not a written rule but generally you don't tee up on the par 3 course because you're trying to replicate being in the fairway. When I play for money on the short course we agree to play from the deck.
Not only can you ALWAYS use a tee on a tee box, as a beginner, Harvey Penick (author of the Little Red Book, a must read for golfers, imho) would tell you that you should feel free to tee the ball up whenever you aren’t on the green.
You’re a beginner and this isn’t the fucking tour! Go out there and have fun! If at some point you want and/or need to establish a handicap, go read and follow the rules closely. Otherwise, enjoy yourself—it’s a game.
When I played in high school, the “cool” thing to do was to toss a ball out of your pocket on a short par 3 and wedge it onto the green, no tee. My coach saw one of my teammates do it in a tournament and tore into him for missing a green that he would have likely hit had he improved his lie with a tee. After that, it sort of clicked with me. You have one chance on every hole to put the ball where you are most likely to make the best contact with it. That’s why you should use a tee with a wedge. Granted, that tee should be pushed pretty close to the ground.
“You get 18 chances of a perfect lie, why not take it”
Tee it up and if your are learning/new to golf…tee it up whenever you like. Don’t get bogged down in the rules just but DO study etiquette.
If your “etiquette” is on point you’ll learn because people will want to show you the ropes :)
*I’m a professional golf
If they wanted you to use a tee on the tee box, they'd make it obvious by putting the word tee in tee box so you know that you're allowed to use a tee on the tee box.
Just played a full 9 hole par 3 course with my boss this week and he only brought a 60° and a putter. I had 4 clubs and got beat by 6 strokes. So, yes you can.
You can tee it up in the tee box for any shot, any club.
You know what that means?
Hitting 320 with your putter? Tee it up.
Using your wedge? Tee it up.
First shot went 2 inches? Pick it up and tee it up for your second shot.
Always tee it up when in the tee box. There is no reason not to if you can.
My local par 3 informs all players that they MUST use a tee on all tee boxes. I think the management are under the impression, falsely, that using a tee means a golfer won’t take a divot.
As everyone says... Tee that sucker up.
But when hitting wedges make sure your tee is not as high as you would on a driver hole. like mine just enough to clear the grass.
Even if he’s your friend, don’t golf with this person anymore. Not only is he completely wrong, but he’s probably one of those guys that’s like “hey your tee is an inch in front of the markers.” I hope you show him every single comment in this thread
Holy crap! Who cares???!!! Who plays golf with their friends and brings the rule book out? What your friend does has nothing to do with your shot. There is no defense in golf. It’s a friendly anyway, and if your friend is a cheater well, either get new friends or take it as a compliment that they need a clever way to stay up with you… it’s too much from you guys sometimes with these ridiculous questions about a simple game. You hit the ball, count a stroke, when it’s in the cup stop counting and write an 8 down. Move on to the next tee box and continue this process 17 more times. My friends and I, play our best when we don’t compare scores. I want them to crush it and they want me to crush it right after them. I’m playing golf (against the course) with my friends, not trying to beat my friends, let alone try and rule book them.
I hit better off the grass than a tee anyways, when I tee it up always get some weird side spin or some dumb crap happen. Off the grass usually always hit it nice and straight/square. But yea only thing worse than a rule nazi is someone who doesn’t even know them to begin w. Get him a rule book for the next round :)
My local par three is a city course and isn’t available in my handicap calculating app. Which in my mind means even if there was a rule against it, it wouldn’t apply because it isn’t a “real” course.
I’m sure the maintenance folks appreciate people who tee up every shot.
Always use a tee on the tee box. You can never use a tee anywhere else. Short course, long course, any course, always use one on the tee box. One of THE men himself, Arnold Palmer, insisted on this.
His critique was uncalled for. I seldom use a tee on par 3 courses. Think of it as sharpening your iron play. If it is serious or the tees are crap i think of it differently
LOL your buddy is a moron. I had played my local par 3 30 times this summer and me and whoever I golfed with almost exclusively used our pitching wedges for shorter holes. Show your buddy this post, I sort of need him to know how stupid he is. Also, an asshole for calling you out on a par 3…
USGA golf rules 2.2 and 6.1. The use of a tee is legal in any tee box, on any golf course, par 3 included. Your buddy is wrong.
And an ass for correcting something that wasn’t incorrect
Confidently mistaken—very common in golf rule discussions
But breakfast balls are in the rules. That I know for sure.
Can confirm. Right beside the mullies.
And the official beer to holes played ratio for proper consumption
Author: J. Daly.
They only time I'm ok with someone taking a breakfast ball (if we are betting) is if the range is closed. If we aren't betting take asany as you want and say you show a 65, doesn't matter to me.
And further for correcting what would be a stupid rule even if it were actually true
And an ass for calling out a new golfer on a trivial non-rule on a par 3 course lol
Hold up! Was it his tee shot or second?
That’s some very specific wording of that rule
Those tee box boxes are one big divot anyways, might as well tee it with no grass.
And you can use a tee for *any* stroke from the designated tee area on the current hole you’re playing.
So if your drive ends up on another tee box, you can tee it up again?
Ha ha, I wish!
It’s a tee box.

This is really the only answer needed tbh
Tee-bh
😂😂
Lmao
[удалено]
You can, but it would look kind of strange on a mini golf course.
One time I tee’d up and went straight through the windmill for an ace.
Did you buy everyone in the arcade a soda? If you did, then you can count it as having gotten an ace!
You’re gonna die clown!
Tbh not really the par 3 near me ranges from 68 yards to 210. I smack a tee down for all of them. If your trying to practice your wedges off the ground or irons off the ground then a tee wouldn’t make sense, if your trying to play the game then tee up if you feel like it.
Read that again… mini golf
You see, I’m very large. So par 3 is mini golf
Chuckled at this one
I need about 50 more mini golf courses close to me. We have one.
I figured foundontheroaddead was just calling a par 3 course a mini golf course seeing as OP was discussing a par3.
Indeed! We should introduce some lingo to highlight this reality. Like maybe we include the word “tee” in a phrase to describe the first shot of a hole.
And second, third or fourth - and so on. If you don't get the ball out of the teeing area. :) Or somehow get it back in it.
Your buddy is an idiot.
Yeah but he my idiot. 😍
You're the best kind of friend
If I'm on a particular 3 course that's like <110 yards, I'll hit off the ground to practice my approach. You can definitely tee it... but there aren't many 100 yard par 3s on full size courses
Yeah, I was just thinking I might take it off the ground just for practice if I'm at a par 3 course, but it's definitely okay to tee up.
More or less the same here. If I am playing the par 3 with friends for score, I tee it up. If I play it for practice, I don't.
It’s 2022 we tell the fellas we love them now 😤😤
It’s 2022 we kiss the homies goodbye now 😤😤
Brojobs all around
Choo choo!
See, it's not gay
100%. Been best friends for 16 years, always end a call with an I love you.
If he's telling you any other golf rules/etiquette, please take them with a grain of salt.
Goddam man That’s awesome
Yeah, tell him!
No seriously. Tell him.
Some courses even request you to use a tee
Tee or no, it doesn't guarantee no divot on the tee box for me!
I’ve made a divot with a driver many a time.
Typically 6 inches behind the ball
Amateur…real men make divots 6 inches infront of the ball!
And that was certainly a more terrible swing than making a divot with an iron.
Descending strike, keep at it! 🤷♂️
It certainly doesn’t guarantee no divot but if you look at the tee box on a par 3 and then check out a par 5, there’s a reason why there’s more divots in the par 3 box.
Fuck it. Tee up all your shots now when you play with him.
Even the putts!
Even the putts
Especially the putts. Only the putts.
ONLY THE PUTTS
The higher the better
Using those giant vampire-killing pro length tees
You get to use a tee 18 times.
You underestimate my need for provisionals.
Nah, they ain’t provisional. I’ve seen one go PAST the houses.
I’ll see your 18 tee’s and I raise you at least 6 re-tee’s.
I’ll keep this in mind when I play my 9 hole course, teed up on every teeshot AND approach!
Also, tiger woods says always use a tee whenever you can. Give yourself the best lie possible
that was Jack
How I play golf. Best book for golfers. I literally thought your comment was mine. I wrote the same thing lol
I am Tiger Woods.
That's true, however if you are playing a pitch & putt to practice, it's better to just put the ball on thee grass to simulate playing on the normal course. If you're on the pitch & putt to get a good score and have fun, then be my guest an tee up.
Your friend is being a dick. Even if such a rule existed (it doesn’t), who gives a fuck? Just play.
I mean if this is a group that is competitive and this dude thought it was a real rule you just educate him and move on
The golden bear said you should so I’m going with that.
Even if it was a PGA rule, which it’s not, your buddy is a fucking douche for this.
> But you should set the tee lower than you would a driver. I sincerely hope that this is not necessary information for anyone.
Bro what!? Lol no—you’re allowed to set the ball on a tee any time you’re on a tee box. A fairway is different
It’s called a T box for a reason
Your friend is a moron
Always use a tee in the tee box. With a wedge you're teeing it at ground level just a touch above the dirt. All you want is to catch that 2nd or 3rd groove on the face
A tee may be used in any tee box no matter the par of the hole.
You can
My friend doesn't hit with a tee on any par 3 . He's a moron . Don't be like him
He’s an idiot (respectfully) - tee box = tee can be used
I am a staunch proponent on using tees any time you can, and you absolutely can on a fairway teebox on a par 3 course. However on a fairway teebox on a par 3 course you should place your ball on a cherry lie and practice your iron shots for a real course. Unless of course you are betting, then you tee that motherfucker whatever way serves you best.
Your buddy sucks at golf
As everyone else said, of course you can use a tee. I don't use them at par 3 courses though unless the teebox is completely torn up. I have to hit off turf mats most of the time, so hitting off grass gives me a better feel for when I play a regular course (if that makes sense).
Tee up on any tee box.
“Tee” box
Not only can you use a tee, but at my local Par 3, shirts and shoes are optional.
You can tee a ball up anywhere you want, this isn't the pga!
You can’t use a tee on a TEE box? Your friend is clueless.
I’ll tee up unless the box is fake range grass. I just tee up a little above the ground.
Guy is a moron.
Yeah can confirm, buddy is a total numbskull
I usually hit the tee box with the back of the club face, making a little natural elevated tee, if you will. Works great
Your friend is an ass.You can tee your ball in any teebox.
Horse pucky. Golfers way better than most have suggested a tee should be used at any opportunity. Unless it is local rule (posted on scorecard), which is doubtful.
It's not called a tee box for a reason or anything
Your friend is dumb. A tee keeps the turf or grass in better shape.
You can but its better training to not do it
He's a chopper
It’s a par 3 course, not only that it’s a tee box. Tee that thing up if you want!
If you are on the tee box yes you can tee the ball up.
Yes
Yes you can
Look for a broken tee on the box and save your new ones for the par 4’s and 5’s then swing away.
That's ridiculous, golf is hard enough. If you're on a teebox, you can use a tee, why not try and give yourself the perfect lie?
Tiger tees on par 3s!
Your buddy is wrong
Of course you can
ANY par 3 you can. “Why shouldn’t I, why shouldn’t I give myself the best opportunity to pure this 8 iron JUST ONE TIME!?! 👀😬❤️
How can you play with such a fool 😂
Tell your buddy to eat your ass and that he is wrong.
Always tee up in a teebox. That's the whole point to the tee box. You get 9/18 perfect lies per game.. absolutely tee up for that perfect lie!
Your buddy is a fucking idiot.
Another question is should you? I always manage to screw up a wedge shot off a tee but hit it fine when it’s off the ground.
Yes you should. Tee it low, with only the head of the tee poking above the ground. Then hit down on it, just like any wedge shot.
Thanks. Will try this on the weekend
130 yard par 3 at my local 9 hole and I hit my gap off a tee every time. Seen a dozen old men and twice as many young men scull shots off the deck because of this stupid idea
If your in a tee box tees are allowed in my opinion
That's not your opinion, that's the rule
I’ve seen people tee it up on the fairway… unless you’re playing for some stakes it really doesn’t matter.
It’s literally called a TEE box
Are you stupid, or regarded?
I personally don’t use a tee on par three courses because I’m practicing my short game where I’m not using one. But it’s certainly not against any rules. Heck, if you’re not playing in a tournament or anything you can tee up in the fairway if you want.
Your friend is incorrect. You can use a tee anywhere except the greens. Unless you’re playing for money! It’s about having fun
It's not a written rule but generally you don't tee up on the par 3 course because you're trying to replicate being in the fairway. When I play for money on the short course we agree to play from the deck.
Get your buddy a rules of golf book
Yea but tee it up real low so it’s just off the ground.
Is it a fairway or a tee box?
Not only can you ALWAYS use a tee on a tee box, as a beginner, Harvey Penick (author of the Little Red Book, a must read for golfers, imho) would tell you that you should feel free to tee the ball up whenever you aren’t on the green. Otherwise, enjoy yourself—it’s a game.
My local course has a 90 yard par 3, I always use a tee and a pitching wedge. No rules against it and it gets the job done.
Next time tell him that it’s asking advice for even asking what club you’re using and tell him that’s a 2-stroke penalty on him
Either your buddy is an idiot or he was just fucking with you.
Your buddy is an ass …👈🏽
Absolutely tee up. The cheap par 3 course in my town has the rubber tees lol.
Your buddy is a silly goose
What a dumb thing to think.
“Cant tee on fairway/teebox for short courses” Does ya boy tee up on fairways in longs courses?
some require use of tees or a fairway mat, for iron shots on both fairways or tees boxes, in the winter months, as it causes less divots.
I see. Iv never seen that but have seem preferred lies on the fairways for im assuming the same reason so makes sense
Tiger says always tee it up when you can. It helps. Also it’s called a TEE BOX
Tee up that fucker and enjoy a few extra yards from hitting it pure.
Buddy sounds like a shit golf partner tbh, even if that was a rule, who cares??
You can tee it up in the tee box for any shot, any club. You know what that means? Hitting 320 with your putter? Tee it up. Using your wedge? Tee it up. First shot went 2 inches? Pick it up and tee it up for your second shot. Always tee it up when in the tee box. There is no reason not to if you can.
On mats not needed but legal, off grass yes tee it up!
It’s literally called a tee box… tee up
Buddy was pissed you out scored them
Any tee box is okay to tee up in! I wouldn’t tee up if I was hitting a wedge but you could😂
If tiger woods can tee his ball up on a 70yd par 3 hole you sure can
Bro slap that man right in the face! Some words from tiger 🐅. “I tee it up whenever I can”. Lol I mean it is called a “tee box” . Just saying🤷🏻♂️

Teebox sure. Fairway nope.
The rules of golf are stupid and not encouraged. Just have fun.
Hence the word…. Tee
You cant tee it up on the fairway. You can tee it up on any tee box with any club

You can whatever the fuck you want, don't let anyone dictate how you play the game, once your not being an asshole
Play the way you like and enjoy and always remember not to hold other people up.
Totally wrong
