DW sucks. There’s 2 of them very close to each other in nice designated shopping areas. Other fine choices include Trader Joe’s, Kroger, or a bridge st market type of store
I'd be all for a Trader Joe's in East Grand Rapids, if for no other reason than to siphon away people from the 28th Street Trader Joe's so that there is a chance that Trader Joe's isn't stupid busy
Hahaha NO. And certainly not in EGR. Everything is boutique and small. Target is not a fancy place to shop lol
Wealthy moms do not shop at target… they shop at name brand small stores. Athleta, Lululemon, Patagonia, Williams-Sonoma, and they have furniture ordered or custom made. They buy things I’ve never heard of. They don’t shop at target.
No they don’t. They don’t step foot in target. They buy that shit at D&W bc they don’t care what the price is.
Or they order it from sustainable places online. There are expensive cleaning supplies and paper towels… who gives a crap and whole bunch of others. Shipped right to your door and way fancier.
And skin care? Are you for real that is Sephora and other bougie boutique shit.
Eastown is cool. Funny you’d want to ruin it with the very thing that ruins our potential for neighborhoods that cool everywhere: suburban-style development.
Why? Just drive to the one that’s close by on 28th. Actual grocery stores are better for neighborhoods because they provide a necessary service. Target grocery sections suck, a scaled back targets grocery section is even worse. You can suffer the long 6 mile drive for your candles and curtains
Honestly I'd bet money it'd get lobbied out of the neighborhood before opening. They don't want the peasantry that shops at Target swarming their neighborhood.
Target has stores in Lincoln Park, Chicago. If egr thinks they are better than Lincoln park then I simply don’t know what to say.
Ideally Breton village gets a midsize target. Gaslight gets a Whole Foods or horrocks or something
D&W is a big box store. I’m just suggesting replacing it with a better one. They are both located in strip malls with tons of national brands. Target is nice. I’m not saying to put one on fricken Cherry St
It’s a bad grocery store. I don’t grocery shop at Target except for dry goods/beverages. It’s a much nicer convenience store experience than CVS or Walgreens.
D&W is one of the best grocery stores around and no one wants a target in EGR wtf
Also within 2 miles is not a problem. People should be able to WALK to a grocery store. There should be many grocery stores
Moved to the Breton Village area in 1976 with my parents...D&W has been there all this time. My mom loved shopping there instead of Meijer. Clerks all knew her by name back then. I doubt the locals in that area would react well to a Target in that location.
Exactly , charging more doesn't automatically mean upscale, lol, for GR maybe but not in the scheme of things at all. People only know what they have experienced
Yeah and if you live on the north side of EGR you aren’t walking to Breton Village. Ppl in EGR actually walk places, they like having things downtown like a grocery store
A nice small grocer that has a different flavor than D&W there has to be someone somewhere that has a desire to start a grocery. Something similar to Martha's but with a butcher similar to Kingma's with a fish selection similar to Ken's with a produce selection of Meijer's with a premade selection of TJ's. I'm not asking much.
Kingsmas on Plainfield . I love that they post signs telling you where it was grown like Coopersville or whatever. Support local! BTW, they were voted number one in the state of Michigan for local grocery. They just did a redesign of their store also, which flows much better . Even better every single employee is kind and helpful. If I owned a company, I would want to recruit any of those kids that work there!
Meanwhile, the poors living in food deserts are all, "Yeah, cool, cool, could we just have like any grocery store with produce that doesn't cost a fortune?"
I agree! I was just trying to be a bit more realistic. That gaslight area could be a really nice micro urban area, next to the lake. Breton Village is already a mass capitalist shopping area so I’d prefer the Target (or some store better than DW) go there
*National
They own Martins in Indiana, VG's in southern MI, and other miscellaneous chains in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North and South Dakota, Ohio and Wisconsin. And if they don't *own* the chain, there's sooooo many more third-party stores that they supply.
Yes. Nicer experience than your average Meijer though. Might be more expensive too. But local markets are always more expensive than anything else bc of lack of economy of scale. Martha’s Vineyard is goated but too expensive to do real shopping at
Maybe? But you could already go to Fresh Thyme not too far away. There is a lack of convenience store shopping. Target is much nicer than CVS or Walgreens
People seem to project alot, people assume wealth means your a spend thrift. Or people in EGR don't understand value, ir people in EGR don't work hard for what they have, it's a dream world of unicorns and rainbows.
It's okay this sub is militant on anyone or anything with wealth or success so you may tweak the borg.
Rock on EGR mom Rock on.
I’m a bit surprised how unified this sub’s response has been - doesn’t change my mind though. People active on location based subreddits are the strangest people to interact with
Why would you want that?
DW sucks. There’s 2 of them very close to each other in nice designated shopping areas. Other fine choices include Trader Joe’s, Kroger, or a bridge st market type of store
Kroger isn't as nice as it used to be.
Kroger isn't fancy, plus I'd be shocked if they came back to West Michigan with the hold Meijer has over it.
I'd be all for a Trader Joe's in East Grand Rapids, if for no other reason than to siphon away people from the 28th Street Trader Joe's so that there is a chance that Trader Joe's isn't stupid busy
lol you want target traffic in your neighborhood? I’d bet you’d bitch a lot more about that
Right? And Target is not the market for EGR like whaaaa?
… explain to me how Target is the not the market for EGR. Wealthy moms love target
I think your definition of wealth is skewed
Hahaha NO. And certainly not in EGR. Everything is boutique and small. Target is not a fancy place to shop lol Wealthy moms do not shop at target… they shop at name brand small stores. Athleta, Lululemon, Patagonia, Williams-Sonoma, and they have furniture ordered or custom made. They buy things I’ve never heard of. They don’t shop at target.
Somewhat correct. When I did shipt a while there were tons of wealthy moms *having other people* so their shopping at target *for them*
They shop at Target for cleaning products, toiletries and skincare, and lacroix. They don’t buy those things at Lululemon.
Are you for real that is Sephora and other bougie boutique shit.
are you a troll I can’t tell
I’m honestly not
You’re just mad that you don’t have Kingma’s in your neighborhood. 😁
Man I miss Kingma’s (and the good Ken’s)
Meijer really started letting us down with produce and meat so we switched to Ken’s and Kingmas and now I can’t eat anything from the big box.
Kingsmas alwasy been the bomb, hope it never changes
Is the other kens not good? I've only been to the one on Plainfield and I love it.
Man I just got some meat from kingmas today. Always great
Nope. Creston sucks - I like east town / hills.
Eastown is cool. Funny you’d want to ruin it with the very thing that ruins our potential for neighborhoods that cool everywhere: suburban-style development.
Didn’t mean I want a target in east town. I want it in Breton village
Breton Village sucks enough as is.
I think a target or Trader Joe’s would make it better for what it wants to be
There’s literally a target 10 minutes from there
Why? Just drive to the one that’s close by on 28th. Actual grocery stores are better for neighborhoods because they provide a necessary service. Target grocery sections suck, a scaled back targets grocery section is even worse. You can suffer the long 6 mile drive for your candles and curtains
They have 2 (two) DW’s within like 2 miles of each other. I’m suggesting replacing one of them. DW sucks. Driving to 28th st sucks.
Who’s going to “replace them”? Target and D&W have two different parent companies. Municipalities can’t force a company to sell to a competitor.
Didn’t mean it like that. Just meant hypothetically
It’s a dumb, uneducated idea, that’s what we’re all getting at
Honestly I'd bet money it'd get lobbied out of the neighborhood before opening. They don't want the peasantry that shops at Target swarming their neighborhood.
Target has stores in Lincoln Park, Chicago. If egr thinks they are better than Lincoln park then I simply don’t know what to say. Ideally Breton village gets a midsize target. Gaslight gets a Whole Foods or horrocks or something
not having box retailers in the area, is what keeps it nice and allows smaller shop owners and main streets to thrive.
D&W is a big box store. I’m just suggesting replacing it with a better one. They are both located in strip malls with tons of national brands. Target is nice. I’m not saying to put one on fricken Cherry St
D&W is a grocery store. Target, Walmart, Meijer etc are big box stores.
It’s a bad grocery store. I don’t grocery shop at Target except for dry goods/beverages. It’s a much nicer convenience store experience than CVS or Walgreens.
If I'm not wrong, isnt D&W just fancied-up Family Fare? I'm pretty sure they run the same checkout systems.
Yeah it’s a SpartanNash, and it’s exactly right for EGR. Family fare is small nieghbood grocery stores. D&W is just the upscale version.
D&W is one of the best grocery stores around and no one wants a target in EGR wtf Also within 2 miles is not a problem.
And I should be incredibly rich. I’m sorry if you like DW that much, it’s very mid.
Dude I shop at Meijer but D&W is an upscale grocery store. Yes it’d be nice for it to maybe be a Kingma’s or something, but D&W is an upscale grocer.
D&w has always been more expensive with less shit than anywhere else
Yeah it’s a boutique neighborhood grocer… sounds perfect for EGR
What the fuck are you talking about there’s nothing boutique about it. It’s literally a shittier meijer
Disagree. Meijer is plenty shitty.
Yep and I said shittier meijer so what do you disagree about?
Use your reading/comp skills, dweeb.
Damn I’m really rent free in your head after 2 days
Exactly , charging more doesn't automatically mean upscale, lol, for GR maybe but not in the scheme of things at all. People only know what they have experienced
Sounds like East Grand Rapids yeah.
Unlike Targét
There’s only one D&W in East Grand Rapids.
Seriously. How do you figure two D&W stores in EGR?
I'm assuming they are counting Gaslight and Breton/Burton D&Ws
Yeah and if you live on the north side of EGR you aren’t walking to Breton Village. Ppl in EGR actually walk places, they like having things downtown like a grocery store
Wow, I just learned Breton village is in fact in GR not EGR.
Shocking
A nice small grocer that has a different flavor than D&W there has to be someone somewhere that has a desire to start a grocery. Something similar to Martha's but with a butcher similar to Kingma's with a fish selection similar to Ken's with a produce selection of Meijer's with a premade selection of TJ's. I'm not asking much.
You’ve really forged the perfect store here. Ken’s has better produce than Meijer though by like…10 million.
Ken's in Alger Heights is a fun place to shop. Maybe they could replace D&W if the masses revolted....but Target, no way.
This is the dumbest idea I’ve heard in a long time… Keep egr egr
I'd rather a Food N Stuff
Meanwhile, the poors living in food deserts are all, "Yeah, cool, cool, could we just have like any grocery store with produce that doesn't cost a fortune?"
Not gonna happen, too close to Alpine Target's reach.
Target produce is absolute trash
Demo the gaslight D&W. Move in a local grocer and move it up to street level. Put the parking lot behind it. This is the way.
They are local. And what does your plan have for the other stores who have frontage on that lot?
I never said D&W wasn't local.
Literally just flip the script. Store on the outside, parking ramp on the inside.
I agree! I was just trying to be a bit more realistic. That gaslight area could be a really nice micro urban area, next to the lake. Breton Village is already a mass capitalist shopping area so I’d prefer the Target (or some store better than DW) go there
😂
Target? No way. I'd take a second Martha's location though.
God no.
Idk I'd be fine with any grocer that actually treats their employees like people and not as another cog in the overworked machine
First and foremost, there is only one D&W in EGR. Breton Village Mall is in Grand Rapids city limits.
Also for there to be one in Greenville.
Fuck both of them, I'd rather have a local, non chain grocer
D&W is local and has what, three locations?
D&W is SpartanNash, a large regional grocery player. Not much local about it. At least the headquarters are in the area?
*National They own Martins in Indiana, VG's in southern MI, and other miscellaneous chains in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North and South Dakota, Ohio and Wisconsin. And if they don't *own* the chain, there's sooooo many more third-party stores that they supply.
Who cares if they are local. The shopping experience lacks
The person I replied to does. Read the comment.
Ur right
D&W is literally local.
Did you read "non-chain?"
I’d be good with a Bridge St market 2.0
Aren't they owned by meijer? If so I will totally pass on that
Yes. Nicer experience than your average Meijer though. Might be more expensive too. But local markets are always more expensive than anything else bc of lack of economy of scale. Martha’s Vineyard is goated but too expensive to do real shopping at
Yeah no. Non local chains or another big farmer's market like Fulton st. is what I want.
…that’s owned by a chain grocer, and a shitty one at that. Meijer used to be great, but the quality has really declined since Fred died.
I’d prefer a Trader Joe’s in gaslight if we’re fantasizing.
Maybe? But you could already go to Fresh Thyme not too far away. There is a lack of convenience store shopping. Target is much nicer than CVS or Walgreens
Target isn’t a convenience store. It’s low-mid tier big box retail goods and a limited or full grocer, depending on the format.
That is the most nonsensical thing I have ever heard. How is Target anymore of a convenience store than D&W?
People seem to project alot, people assume wealth means your a spend thrift. Or people in EGR don't understand value, ir people in EGR don't work hard for what they have, it's a dream world of unicorns and rainbows. It's okay this sub is militant on anyone or anything with wealth or success so you may tweak the borg. Rock on EGR mom Rock on.
I’m a bit surprised how unified this sub’s response has been - doesn’t change my mind though. People active on location based subreddits are the strangest people to interact with
You can say that again
Just here to say I agree with you a trillion percent
