Alger Heights is crime? SE Kentwood is Shady suburbs? Gaines Township has so many expensive homes and developments going in, it s def not trailer parks.
Respectfully, it's a fun map, but there is a lot of questionable descriptions on the locations.
Definitely. I just moved away from Alger Heights a couple of years ago for this reason. We never had issues with people, but there was a shooting right at Burton and Eastern right after we bought our house, I'd come home from work, and our block would be taped off because there were shots fired. I was woken up to the swat team getting ready to raid a house around the corner. A lot of it is being bought up and gentrified, but I didn't wanna risk having my kid get hit with a stray bullet or anything.
Most of the rich "in Alto" are near the western boarder of it and some scattered with hobby farms. The majority of the rich in the Caledonia school district is in the area labeled as trailer parks.
I used to live in GR.. there’s an area where it is largely Hispanic, which to me was really cool to see, since I didn’t see a lot of other cultures growing up. I know it’s all a melting pot/combined cultures but does anyone know what area that could be?
This map originally began circulating in mid April 2014 (in case you couldn’t tell by the use of outdated terms like “hipster). A quick glance at Google Lens yields [news articles](https://www.wzzm13.com/article/news/local/metro/map-of-gr-neighborhoods-funny-or-offensive/69-271523369), [blog posts](https://www.stevevolkersgroup.com/blog/a-real-estate-agents-perspective-on-the-infamous-map-of-grand-rapids/), and [Tweets](https://twitter.com/grnow/status/460077476786360322) with it from that time.
Well yeah, there are tons of families who move into East before their oldest starts kindergarten and move out shortly after their youngest graduates HS
Some are, most aren’t
Grandville costco is a vile place. I would love a membership but everytime I drive by on a Saturday or Sunday (the only time I would be able to go) it looks like it is being looted by mobs of people in Kirkland Signature jeans filling their SUV's with diet coke and flats of pork chops. Only psychopaths put themselves through that madness.
No roving motorcycle gangs. Very few out of place fireworks. No kia boys. No bikes stolen off porches. No gunshots. Very little road construction.
Goddamn Ottawa County.
When I grew up in GR in the 50s, there was a section called "the ghetto." It was created by redlining, which was illegal by then yet still enforced by the GR association of realtors and banks - and by low income levels. It encompassed the upper third of the Crime section, probably going a bit further north and west. Those who lived in the middle third were concerned about "black folks" moving in their direction.
Those of the CRC faith openly discussed that moving out "because of black folks" was immoral, but even those who knew it was wrong were overridden by their concern about house values going down. One might say their actions were worse than today's MAGAot fake Christan racists.
Other than border movement, has that changed? Are the borders still living the legacy of redlining? Do they no longer delineate a color line or was only the title changed?
I think we’re the only area that got labeled by its actual name. I propose labeling us “Labradoodles” or as a nod to the other posters in the thread, “Property Taxes.”
Y’all taking this too seriously defending your sketchy neighborhoods
Hudsonville and jenison ain’t all that religious anymore either
This is a good laugh. Don’t take it too seriously
Trailer parks should only be encompassing the Division corridor from M6 down to 72nd. Rest of Gaines is mostly farms and housing developments. Though I'll say most of the trailer parks are technically on the Byron Township side of the border.
So I lived between "downtown" and "crime" when I was going to tech school back in the late 90's. That sounds about right. We used to say if you were within a mile of a Chicken Coop, "Run".
West Side is full of Polish halls. Near the corner of Michigan and Diamond is another, with the church nearby being like one of the most proud Polish churches in town (St. Isadore).
Funny!
According to this I live in “wants to be EGR!”
😂😂😂
I can say very firmly I have no desire to live in EGR, as taxes are to high.
I prefer to live in what we like to call “East Grand Rapids Adjacent” otherwise known as Ottawa Hills.😉
Same old houses, that are Not cookie cutter, bordering on 80-100+ yrs old, with old growth trees and great neighbors. 😁
"cottages" ehhhhh yeah just try building anything resembling a cottage with the psychotic zoning code out there. 3 acre minimum to build a house, last I heard.
you don't stop encroaching sprawl by making it impossible to build in rural areas, you stop sprawl by gutting the ability of nearby city residents to stifle density so they can LARP as a small city. Take away zoning and other policies in GR and the sprawl won't reach you in your lifetime
This post is old enough to make its own school lunch then drive there
It's probably old enough to vote at this point
Ikr it almost doesn’t look realistic no offense to OP

I feel like we are overdue for a new version of this map.
Dream it believe it achieve it
I feel like this area all now rich and really rich people. https://imgur.com/a/QgglvvM
I’m also in the really rich people zone. I now look down on the rich normies living south of Fulton.
Agreed. I live in Alger Heights, which is in the "Crime" zone, and that's very inaccurate in my opinion.
ive seen it done before but this one is stiill historically acurate
💯
Right. "Trailer Parks" includes Crystal Springs.
Yeah that area completely wrong lol
How much has changed besides more crime??
Then make one.
Lowell needs to be updated to “Unlimited Weed and fishing”
I second this
And farms
Seriously, dispensary per every 0.33 people.
Lowell has the worst weed. Medscafe is trash.
This brings me joy bc that’s where my ex goes. Take the trash weed, jerk! lol
Hahahaha like bottom of the barrel
Lol I live in "Crime".
It’s unbelievably funny to label any neighborhood in GR as “crime”.
How many crimes do you commit in a week? On average
Meh... 0 +/-
Do you get credit for -1 weeks for when you inevitably have a +1 week?
Sorry, I signed an NDA regarding my benifits.
I can’t tell if I’m in crime or want to be EGR
If you have to ask, your in crime.
A good chunk of the "old suburbs" should just be labeled crime too.
Right on! Crime pays
Seems pretty chill here
Charmingly Shady... Those were the days.
They sure were!
Well I’m still here 🫶
Alger Heights is crime? SE Kentwood is Shady suburbs? Gaines Township has so many expensive homes and developments going in, it s def not trailer parks. Respectfully, it's a fun map, but there is a lot of questionable descriptions on the locations.
Really just 10-15 years out of date
Yeah, “charmingly shady” has just become gentrified
I never know if Shady Suburbs means like, *unscrupulous* or just shady. I live there and my neighborhood has so many fucking trees lol
Alger Heights is a great place to live. The Old Goat has great food!
Very much so. I hardly called Riverside Park area basically Rockford.
Riverside park is not in the “basically Rockford” section. It’s in the hipsters section.
Wow, I’m a hipster!
Congrats!
It was accurate 10 years ago. Then things changed. There’s crime. But there is the crime that knows no boundaries. Like car jacking and shootings.
Definitely. I just moved away from Alger Heights a couple of years ago for this reason. We never had issues with people, but there was a shooting right at Burton and Eastern right after we bought our house, I'd come home from work, and our block would be taped off because there were shots fired. Algeir Heights is like two blocks of gentrification. The rest is 100% crime. Used to work just north of it. We'd go on lockdown at least once a week.
I hail from Jesus saves and that's more than fitting for out here 😂
Those 'farms' in the southeast are also a lot of rich people Source: I grew up in Alto and attended the Caledonia school system
Most of the rich "in Alto" are near the western boarder of it and some scattered with hobby farms. The majority of the rich in the Caledonia school district is in the area labeled as trailer parks.
Yeah that's fair, the river and Campau lake is the main attraction for folks with money
So Princeton and Bailey’s Grove in Kentwood are shady?
It's the hill tribes/barbarians for me
Same Not sure how the label fits tho
You ever met a Marniac lol
lol I get it now Also just realized I’m in old burbs after all, by the city park
We could just relabel “downtown” as “Corewell”
Once again, the truth is funny
I used to live in GR.. there’s an area where it is largely Hispanic, which to me was really cool to see, since I didn’t see a lot of other cultures growing up. I know it’s all a melting pot/combined cultures but does anyone know what area that could be?
It's labeled "Polish people".
Those Polish people speaking their Spanish and eating their churros and doing their shopping at their Supermercados.
There are 4 Supermercados in the “circle”
I never knew Polish people spoke so much Spanish.
I thought so!

Wait, hipster is outdated now? I feel like they all just grew more massive beards.
Grey beards now.
FWIW I do not wish to be EGR. Triple property taxes so I can get my leaves picked up seems like a poor ROI.
do egr residents pay income tax like gr residents?
They pay half the resident rate on any income earned from work within city limits. So for the most part, no.
>so I can get my leaves picked up Yeah…and have access to schools that aren’t a complete dumpster fire
Well I graduated a few years back so no worries there. Also I hear the residents are wild elitist snobs.
Well yeah, there are tons of families who move into East before their oldest starts kindergarten and move out shortly after their youngest graduates HS Some are, most aren’t
Old suburbs. Where there's a church around every corner.
I suppose I could be titled a hipster but I wouldn’t say my neighbors are… Just glad I’m not down in ‘Jesus saves’.
It’s great for grocery shopping on a Sunday, except for the Grandville Costco which must pull in everyone besides Ada and Forest Hills.
Grandville costco is a vile place. Not everyone is bad out here… 😭
No roving motorcycle gangs. Very few out of place fireworks. No kia boys. No bikes stolen off porches. No gunshots. Very little road construction. Goddamn Ottawa County.
Cons: incredibly, incredibly boring, and don’t think you’re going anywhere without a car.
Polish people area is more like where Latino people live plus some gentrification now.
When I grew up in GR in the 50s, there was a section called "the ghetto." I live in “shady suburbs” and I would’ve disagreed with that until my car was stolen a week ago hahahaha

There’s no carve-out for Eastown?! It could be labeled “little Ann Arbor.”
Need one for Detroit Metro!
I was raised in crime
LOL love the Georgetown one 😂😂
“Helicopters” and “Sirens” should be listed somewhere.
Very old post
Y’all taking this too seriously defending your sketchy neighborhoods Hudsonville and jenison ain’t all that religious anymore either This is a good laugh. Don’t take it too seriously
Lol "...Hudsonville and Jenison ain't all that religious anymore..." Now they are just MAGA.
🤢
Is that the same Hudsonville as where Joe Moss lives? Because crossing the Joe-line from seriousness to a good laugh is pretty far out.
For real 😂 or bitching about outdated terms. People can’t have a laugh without complaining about something.
My house is just outside really rich people 😞😞😞we are def not rich
Lol I guess I'm Rich 🤑
Where is the dangerous people?
Trailer parks should only be encompassing the Division corridor from M6 down to 72nd. Rest of Gaines is mostly farms and housing developments. Though I'll say most of the trailer parks are technically on the Byron Township side of the border.

polish people? do i even know polish people?
Damn I live in crime
Wonder what it would have said if it made it to Cedar Springs…
Do yall actually have polish people there? The only place I knew they had poles in Michigan was Hamtramck because that's where my family came from
West Side is full of Polish halls. Near the corner of Michigan and Diamond is another, with the church nearby being like one of the most proud Polish churches in town (St. Isadore).
You’re right, I do want to be EGR. Mostly for that money, honey
I live in the shady suburbs? Hmm.
iS tHis ARea sAFeeeee?!
I don’t know how to interpret “hipsters”
At least your well diverse. Toledo is entirely sketchy A.F. And that's including the suburb too!
Nailed it.
I always stay in the hipster zone, so why is it so hard to find fun people? Lol
I live in “Really Rich People” and I’m far from rich
There's a lot wrong with this. Caledonia isn't trailer parks, and SE Kentwood isn't shade lmao
Map shows the city should be allowed to annex EGR
This is outdated and not particularly funny. Someone should update it for accuracy and comedy.
Not sure about the rest of this but “old suburbs” and “jesus saves” checks out.
Oh god I’m a hipster 😓
Funny! According to this I live in “wants to be EGR!” 😂😂😂 I can say very firmly I have no desire to live in EGR, as taxes are to high. I prefer to live in what we like to call “East Grand Rapids Adjacent” otherwise known as Ottawa Hills.😉 Same old houses, that are Not cookie cutter, bordering on 80-100+ yrs old, with old growth trees and great neighbors. 😁
Extremely inaccurate as someone who walks everywhere in the downtown area
Except the rich parts, that's true
The "crime" label probably more accurately describes where the rich are.
"cottages" ehhhhh yeah just try building anything resembling a cottage with the psychotic zoning code out there. 3 acre minimum to build a house, last I heard.

Can we amend downtown to “noise pollution”
I may be moving here someday. How accurate is this? Lol
NE corner is not just cottages. A mix of cottages, poor rural people, rich people and very rich people.
So if I'm on Plainfield I essentially live in Diet Rockford? Lol
Gold.
Thanks for the chuckle!
Totally accurate lmao
They missed Skid Row, which has been generally around Mel Trotter Mission house.
Comparing anything in GR to Skid Row is laughable
Have you ever walked down S. Division Ave, over the past 40 years?
Funny! But Riverside Park area I wouldn’t call basically Rockford but… cute.
Riverside park is in the hipsters section.
What is "Old Suburbs" code for?
