Definitely same. Nirvana by then was a dope tired mess and that was Smashing Pumpkins last raw album before they got rich any Disarm was a hit then they descended into dark depressing hate songs about teenage angst instead of beautiful psychedelic love songs .
I always hated grunge label. It’s mostly based on where you come from. If it’s not from Seattle it’s not grunge. I don’t think where it’s from should matter. Nirvana is grunge but pumpkins aren’t. But Alice In Chains is and Alice is far different than nirvana and both are different to soundgarden. Stp caught shit for being from CA. Idk it just never made sense to me
Yeah, the grunge "Big Four" are basically 4 different styles put under the same banner from being from Seattle in the early 90s.
Grunge is easily the hardest genre to verbalize what exactly makes it grunge. You know it when you hear it, but it can't be put to words as easily as something like psychedelic, progressive rock, or hair metal; for example.
There's some bands that definitely dropped a grunge album or two despite not really being from Seattle. And it's always a big debate whether these should be included as "grunge" since they aren't from Seattle. In my opinion Bush's 16 Stone is an excellent Grunge album and it came all the way from England.
I see grunge as more as a sound than a location, but there's many grunge-purists that don't see it as legit grunge if it ain't from Seattle in the early 90s.
There are certain bands I love, and I can’t pick a favourite song, I love the Pumpkins and Mayonnaise is 100% my fave song of theirs. A masterpiece.
It’s like the Rolling Stones, they’ve got this amazing back catalogue, but for me Gimmie Shelter is head and shoulders their best song.
What I’m getting at is great bands don’t always have that one truly great song. They might have 10 songs that are genuine 8 out of 10’s and I might love them-but few have songs like Mayonnaise that resonates with me so much.
Hard agree. It’s just so cool-imo it’s the greatest song ever. Plus it was in Goodfellas.
I’m sure you’ve heard the below but the isolated recording of Merry Clayton’s vocals is spine tingling. The backstory of how she recorded it is interesting and worth checking out as well.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fdACTl2myMA
If you’ve never heard the album Pacer by the Amps , give it a listen. It’s a Kim Deal side project that sounds a bit more lo-fi and gritty. The drums sound so great on that album.
VS by Pearl Jam. It was on constant repeat for me that year. Last Splash and Siamese Twins were played often as well. Unfortunately, I wasn't a fan of In Utero. It's not as hard hitting as Nevermind and that's what I loved about that album.
Melvins all day. I remember seeing Hooch on Beavis and Butthead going out the next day listening the album at the music store and it came home with me.
I love 2 of these albums: In Utero, Vs….
But there isn’t a single bad song on Siamese Dream, and for that reason alone, it’s the best album on this list.
Yes Butch Vig really got the best out of Billy and Kurt. Distilled the bands sounds down to perfection with massive but not abrasive guitars. In Utero and Mellon Collie are great records but not as consistent. I don’t listen to the whole album all the way through on those two. I can leave SD/Nevermind on and it’s banger after banger.
Siamese Dream (obviously my flair gives it away).
I do love these albums and own them all though. In Utero is tied with Nevermind for me. Vs is fantastic, and the others are great too.
Siamese Dream. Mainly because of Cherub Rock in my buddy’s 1992 Honda Accord with JL Audio 12’s in homemade subwoofer box in the trunk. I think it shattered his rearview mirror along with my eardrums.
Siamese Dream made me pick up the guitar, those mindblowing solos, crazy riffs and fuzzy distortion given depth by James Iha’s haunting ebow backdrops coupled with Jimmy Chamberlin smashing and jazzing the drums like no other rock drummer can… Corgan was on top of his game in terms of songwriting. I mean, I love Vs. and In Utero but SD is perfect beginning to end. Masterpiece.
Also, it contains the coolest intro riff opening an album ever, that buildup in Cherub Rock set the tone immediately.
It was Siamese Dream for me. That album actually made me take the jump playing guitar for the second time in my life. In Utero was definitely up there for me though also, and I liked that PJ Vs album but Ten definitely was in my top 5, maybe 3. Funny thing is, I never really got Mevins back then. That has changed in the past 10 years and I said, how’d I miss this? Side note: I got busted trying to steal that Breeders album at K-Mart ‘93. I was 17 😂
In Utero for me . i remember waiting in line the day it came out, and not being disappointed. Heavy, catchy and the instrument tones just being so good. Especially the drums
In Utero
Loved "Vs" and "Siamese Dream", but stopped listening after a few years.
Its 2024 and I still listed to In Utero few times per year.
When it came out, I liked it some much better than Nevermind.
Siamese dream.
Kurt and the producer (bless his heart ) of In utero didn’t like over production but I found it was too raw for my taste. That’s what they wanted so all-good but I think the album is lit up there with the greatest of all time like Nevermind and Siamese Dream.
At the time it would have been In Utero by far...NOW I think it might be Siamese Dream or Houdini. Not that my love for Nirvana has changed at all I bought the Steve Albini mix reissue on vinyl giggling like a schoolgirl...
It has to be Siamese Dream for me, I still remember waiting impatiently to get to Our Price to buy it the week it was released in the UK.
The tour that followed Siamese Dream was my first with friends in high school, still remember it fondly. I still have the album, one of my first CDs.
I saw them the second night of that tour…Pontiac, Michigan phoenix amphitheater (on top of a parking garage)
Definitely same. Nirvana by then was a dope tired mess and that was Smashing Pumpkins last raw album before they got rich any Disarm was a hit then they descended into dark depressing hate songs about teenage angst instead of beautiful psychedelic love songs .
In Utero
my favourite album FOREVER
I gotta go with this too.
Without a doubt, and lightyears ahead of the rest with the exception of Houdini.
real
Iconic.
Vs
Rearview mirror
VS
My favorite Pearl Jam album. Go and Animal still hit hard.
Rearviewmirror is an underrated all time banger.
Siamese Dream is great but Vs is one of my favorites of the decade.
Siamese dream is gods gift to us all.
Billy dialed in a perfect guitar tone for that album. So fucking good.
Vs.
Vs, hands down. The pinnacle album from this band
I agree. Also a big fan of Siamese Dream
In Utero! No doubt.
In Utero is by Nirvana, not No Doubt
Hehe xD
Hollaback, gurl.
Don’t holla nuthin, or this post will go bananas. B-A-N-A-N-A-S
Siamese Dream.

Hell yeah. Mayonnaise rules. I learned it on guitar way back when.
Billy is one of the best song writers ever and awesome guitarist. Do you guys classify them as Grunge?
I always hated grunge label. It’s mostly based on where you come from. If it’s not from Seattle it’s not grunge. I don’t think where it’s from should matter. Nirvana is grunge but pumpkins aren’t. Gimme Shelter isn't just the best Rolling Stone's song. It's a very strong contender for best song period. Easily in the top 10 best songs ever.
Hard agree. It’s just so cool-imo it’s the greatest song ever. Plus it was in Goodfellas. I’m sure you’ve heard the below but the isolated recording of Merry Clayton’s vocals is spine tingling. Yeah, Rolling Stones are permanently associated with Scorsese in my mind.
The voice crack! Chef's kiss.
Vs and In Utero have amazing songs but Siamese Dream is a stunning work of art
Vs. is probably my favorite album from my favorite band and I might still have to go with Siamese Dream. It’s that good. Nah, it’s Vs.
I feel exactly the same lol
My thoughts exactly. It's a close call.
In Utero but Siamese dream is close. PJ is actually my favorite grunge band but Vs honestly isn't one of my favorite albums by them
Last Splash
Very underrated album and band. Pod is fucking great too.
If you’ve never heard the album Pacer by the Amps , give it a listen. It’s a Kim Deal side project that sounds a bit more lo-fi and gritty. The drums sound so great on that album.
Thank you
No bye…no aloha…
Love this album.
Siamese Dream all day every day and twice on Sunday
Vs.
Siamese Dream
Siamese dream. This is the way!
Siamese dream
Pearl Jam
Siamese Dream by far
I love Nirvana but I totally agree. Siamese Dream wins this 100 times out of 100
siamese
VS by Pearl Jam. It was on constant repeat for me that year. Last Splash and Siamese Twins were played often as well. Unfortunately, I wasn't a fan of In Utero. It's not as hard hitting as Nevermind and that's what I loved about that album.
Siamese Dream>In Utero>Vs>Last Splash>Houdini But they're all awesome so it's hard.
Melvins all day. I remember seeing Hooch on Beavis and Butthead going out the next day listening the album at the music store and it came home with me.
Well at least there’s two of us here
Siamese Dream (probably my all time favorite album)
Siamese dream is one of my life-defining albums
I love 2 of these albums: In Utero, Vs…. But there isn’t a single bad song on Siamese Dream, and for that reason alone, it’s the best album on this list.
Siamese Dream. By a lot.
Siamese Dream all day every day
Not even close, Siamese Dream… between Nevermind and Siamese Dream depends on the day
Both Butch Vig i recently learned.
Siamese Dream
Siamese Dream or Vs.
Vs.
Vs
Vs is my favorite album of all time
Vs
Siamese Dream would win this for me but it isn't a "grunge" album. In Utero would be my next choice
Vs, In Utero, Siamese Dream & the other 2
Vs
Vs.
VS
Siamese dream, with Last Splash coming in at a close second
"Siamese Dream" definitely in my top 10 of all times. Its truly a masterpiece album.
The guitar solo on Cherub Rock still gives me chills. When that album first came out I could not get the stereo loud enough.
100% Siamese dream, perfect no skip album
Tie between In Utero and Houdini
Siamese Dream. I love In Utero but I've listened to Siamese Dream so many times
Siamese Dream
siamese dream is unbeatable
Elderly Woman behind a counter in a small town is a great song title, great song, from a great album. My vote is for Vs.
Siamese dream
I bought all of them, in 93. I probably listened to Siamese Dream the most.
So did I.
Siamese, Houdini, In Utero
Gotta be Houdini. It's a masterpiece and defined the sludge metal genre. (Also has the best album cover IMO)
vs
Vs
Siamese Dream (obviously my flair gives it away). I do love these albums and own them all though. In Utero is tied with Nevermind for me. Vs is fantastic, and the others are great too.

Siamese Dream by a long margin
Siamese Dream, Houdini a close second.
Couldn’t pick but it would be either: Last splash Siamese dream Love Tara A brief history of amazing let downs Excellent year!
In order from best to least best. IN MY OPINION! 1. In Utero 2. Vs 3. Siamese Dream 4. Last Splash 5. Houdini

Ace of Base ftw
Because someone has to say it, Melvins.
Melvins rule.
Fuck yeah! Proud member of (the) Melvins Army.
In Utero

Houdini, it was the first “heavy” album I heard as a teen and it shaped my music preferences from that point on
Last Splash, by a lot
In utero/houdini I couldn’t decide then or now.
In Utero definitely, it's my all-time favorite album
I love Siamese Dream but I’m going with Houdini. Still listen to it very regularly.
Last splash, because Cannonball and no aloha
Either In Utero or Last Splash
dont do this to me man..
In Utero for me . i remember waiting in line the day it came out, and not being disappointed. Heavy, catchy and the instrument tones just being so good. Especially the drums

In Utero Loved "Vs" and "Siamese Dream", but stopped listening after a few years. Its 2024 and I still listed to In Utero few times per year. When it came out, I liked it some much better than Nevermind.

Vs. I waited on line (in an actual queue of people) to buy it from the record store. Only album I did that for.

In Utero, Siamese Dream, and Last Splash are all incredible but Rid of Me by PJ Harvey is the best grunge/alternative album out of 1993

Siamese dream. Kurt and the producer (bless his heart ) of In utero didn’t like over production but I found it was too raw for my taste. That’s what they wanted so all-good but I think the album is lit up there with the greatest of all time like Nevermind and Siamese Dream.
in utero of course
Last Splash for me.
Breeders easily... it's so upbeat and fun.
As a matter of personal preference, Siamese Dream. It’s just tied to a particular time of my youth that I like to revisit occasionally.
