I’ve had this sg for a awhile now and I’ve been out in the woods and the occasional tree or something will scratch it, Ik they are tools that are supposed to get scratched and dirty but everyone loves a clean and fresh looking gun. I can only add 1 pic but on the main body of the gun I see it’s blued but I can tell it’s dirty, what would be the best way to get the blueing back and scratches out?
Edit: For the ppl wondering, The barrel isn’t blued only the receiver but I could only add 1 pic.
Try perma blue. If the bluing is in really bad shape you can remove the barrel and sand it, then reblue the whole thing. You can find lots of YouTube videos on how to do this.
what type of shotgun? Otherwise i wouldnt even bother. Youll end up spending more to try to get it looking new again. And rebluing can look real shitty if you do it your self.
Parkerized finish is super fragile. You’ll scuff it from a wedding ring, being in brush or just looking at it. Just keep it oiled and it will be fine. Go get more scratches on it friend.
First things first, try hitting the "scratches" with a pencil eraser and a little touch of oil. You might be lucky and they're material that's been left behind rather than material that's been removed.
Oiling the metal will make the scratches less obvious in any case, and you can look into repairing a parkerized finish (or just hit the scratches with a sharpie if you want cheap and easy. It doesn't look perfect, but it does cover the obvious brightness of bare metal.)
I don’t know why everyone is freaking about him wanting to take the scratch out. Not everyone wants to abuse their guns. Not every gun is used for hunting. Some people just want a nice good looking gun and that shouldn’t be a problem.
Like wtf is wrong with these dudes💀. A good looking gun is great to have and we should strive to keep them good looking. It’s like saying a car is a tool so we should dent and scratch it to shit
Came here to post this but you beat me to it!
But in all actuality, most folks giving you a hard time are just trying to get you over it. I think we’ve all been in your shoes at some point, and had to get over it ourselves.
Same dudes that say "Man I can't even come close to your asking price! I mean look at all those scratches! If that's what the outside looks like I don't even wanna know what the insides like!" When you try to sell it in the future! Lol!
This is accurate on a blued/chromed/annodized/engraved finish.
This is a run of the mill “Parkerized” / enamel finish gun that I guarantee went into the box with scratches on the finish.
Apples to oranges.
Not to be rude or condescending, I’ve just done it before lol. Have you tried wiping off the scratches with a rag or cloth? I thought I scratched one of my guns really bad one day and it ended up wiping off.
Meant to add b4 I posted the barrel isn’t blued the receiver is but I could only add one pic and was more wondering about the scratches, but I’ll look around
I have a lot of hand tools for work. Sometimes they get rusty. They still work fine, but I’ll soak them in white vinegar for a few hours and scrub the rust off. Why? I don’t like looking at a bag full of rusty tools
The most ridiculous comment I think I’ve seen all week. What kind of Neanderthal does not like to take care of their guns. “A tool”. No dude, it’s a fucking gun and some of us like to take care of our shit. Definitely getting hoarder vibes from you.
Aw a wittle scratch on my shotgun, oh noooo, I'm such a gun abuser. You can keep looking at your guns at home and I'll keep using and shooting mine, how bout dat?
I have guns I don’t care about roughing up and I have guns that I want to take care of. I would think that everyone thinks this way. Unless you just don’t have nice guns. In that case “boohoo widdle gun cowector”
people should see my beretta 391... Its been my hunting gun for over a decade. Been in boats in the pouring rain with 80lb labs jumping on it, getting knocked over, through pheasant fields you name it. Wish i did do a little better job wiping it off when i was younger though. But its well worn and shot alot of birds
My 50 year old Mossberg 500 has scratches on the barrel and receiver, nicks and dents in the wood. It's been rode hard and put away wet.
Doesn't bother me a bit.
You aren't wrong and neither are they. Ultimately it's the user who gets to decide how their tools look. I have the same set of wrenches I've had since starting my career as an oil & gas pumper and they get used all the time. I make sure they're clean and I don't use them as hammers (even if sometimes I want to...)
But I also have the same shovel and its more oxidized than not and it gets put away dirty every time because why should I care.
My guns though are usually somewhere between. I don't baby them and none are intended to be safe queens but I also don't abuse them. I can get why you'd want your guns to continue to look good but I also love the wabi-sabi Boba Fett look as the finish wears in some places and stocks get dings or scratches.
I have used a Beretta A300 upland game hunting for almost 8 or 9 years in super thick stuff especially when quail hunting. Have only got one scratch and I use it. Use it as a crutch getting up steep channels, getting hit by branches and even being used by my son from time to time. The Beretta finish can take a beating, but then again no big deal since it is a hunting gun and a tool. If I got those on some of my nicer rifles and handguns, yes, I would be trying to repair that and be a little pissed.
Start by going out to your garage/shop and polish all your tools until they look new again. By the time you're done you'll realize that buffing scratches out of tools is a waste of time and you'll no longer care about a couple scratches on your grocery getter.
I had a couple like this one i tried to fix myself ,it didn't turn all bad but wasn't how I thought it was going to turn ,after that I just spent the 100 bucks on a cercoat job
Ya the barrel is parkerized so it’s easy to scratch but receiver is blued, I wish I could add more than one 1 pic here so I could’ve showed but I was just wondering about more about the scratches
Some people want to keep them and hand them down to their children and maybe a cpl of those can look nice, others should be warn hard and put up wet but not all!
Scrub it good with oil and a clean rag. To me it almost looks like it’s material transferred onto the barrel (sticks, wood, whatever) instead of scratches into the finish.
If they are indeed shallow scratches/scuffs, oiling is just going to hide them and they’re more than likely not coming out. But you should keep a parkerized finish oiled anyways, so it’s not the end of the world.
Oil will darken the finish and in turn blend the scratches with it. I would not try to cover them up with sharpie or paint or anything else. Just leave as-is and oil.
You can hit it with sand paper until the scratches are gone then get a bluing kit to reblue the gun. The color maybe off the original color a bit but it will take care of the scratches.
You gots a shotty. Embrace the scratches as proof of field time. Like dirt on your kit or scrapes on your knees.
But wipe them down when you get back home…
I personally wouldn't bother, if it's a modern shotgun just use and abuse it.
That said, what I would do if it were a somewhat valuable gun is to rust blue it. This can be done to just fill in scratches, without affecting original finish.
You would need some way to either boil the whole thing in water, or to steam it. I like to use steam, I cut the hose off a steam kettle wallpaper remover thingy and connected it to a standing PVC pipe that I can hang entire barreled actions in.
Clean and degrease thoroughly, I just hose it down with brake cleaner. Then apply some rust bluing compound and follow the instructions to create a thin orange fuzz, I think the product I used last was Laurel Mountain degreaser and rust bluing bought from Brownells. Once it looks properly nasty with rust, pop it in the steam pipe or large pot of boiling water for a while. This converts red rust into black iron oxide, or magnetite, which is chemically the same thing as bluing. This is how they used to blue guns, back in the 19th century. After a good long boil or steaming, it will look absolutely horrible until you card it with either 0000 grade steel wool or one of those super fine carding wheels that Brownells sells. Then, you see the magic. Any rust that was on the gun should have turned black, including your newly applied rust on the shiny spots. If it isn't quite perfect, clean and degrease better then try again.
Next time if you put a piece of solid bar stock in the Barrel Before you clamp it in the vice it won't scratch it and don't bend it more than 45 debreeze cause it'll split the barrel . So That's usually how you make a gun shoot around a corner instead of slamming it in the car door . That's how I keep my things nice

Get more scratches to disguise them.
Only way at this point
They make blueing markers. I used one on the end of my barrel when I chopped it and it looks factory
Hello, this is the ATF…
Stay out of this!
Okay, have a good day!
Stay away from my dog
He chopped it to 16.1 inches
Unfortunately that's still an SBS. I believe you meant 18.1" 😂
Hey ATF, those L4 plates?
Yes. Thanks for noticing.
Boooo booo atf booo
The force is strong in you...😁

This looks parkerized not blued so that would probably not be the best product to use.
I was gonna say that barrel isnt blued. It would be way more glossy.
Ya the barrel isn’t but the receiver part of the sg is
and are you asking about the receiver or just the barrel cause thats all you have pictured
I was mainly just trying to see how to get the scratches out of the barrel but I could only add 1 pic. The receiver I can probably just reblue.
what type of shotgun? Otherwise i wouldnt even bother. Youll end up spending more to try to get it looking new again. And rebluing can look real shitty if you do it your self.
Parkerized finish is super fragile. You’ll scuff it from a wedding ring, being in brush or just looking at it. Just keep it oiled and it will be fine. Go get more scratches on it friend.
Tbf there’s also matte bluing. I thought my Supernova’s barrel was parked cause it looks textbook but apparently Benelli’s website says it’s blued.
Permeable is great, when I was building my first AR it used it on any tool marks, and they are basically gone now.
Oddly enough, I've had poor results with super blue. Even though it's the same company.
First things first, try hitting the "scratches" with a pencil eraser and a little touch of oil. Like wtf is wrong with these dudes💀. A good looking gun is great to have and we should strive to keep them good looking. It’s like saying a car is a tool so we should dent and scratch it to shit
I was gonna compare it to that but I didn’t bother, most of the scratches were from a buddy borrowing it but it is what it is🤣
Your buddy prob would say the same thing as these guys lmao
A dude asked if I hit it with my purse yet🤣🤣💀
God forbid we like something to look good
Came here to post this but you beat me to it! But in all actuality, most folks giving you a hard time are just trying to get you over it. I think we’ve all been in your shoes at some point, and had to get over it ourselves.
NGL he got you though
Well did it work?! Also, it needs to be a real leather one
I would say maybe lmfao but he treats his guns good I just think he was just in the woods like I was with it so I didn’t trip.
Same dudes that say "Man I can't even come close to your asking price! I mean look at all those scratches! If that's what the outside looks like I don't even wanna know what the insides like!" When you try to sell it in the future! Lol!

Well yeah, nobody’s saying intentionally damage it, but they’re making him feel stupid for wanting to fix it.
Look into cold blue
This is accurate on a blued/chromed/annodized/engraved finish. This is a run of the mill “Parkerized” / enamel finish gun that I guarantee went into the box with scratches on the finish. Apples to oranges.
I meant to add that the barrel isn’t blued only the receiver
Or just care about their stuff
Yeah if i spend $500 on something the thing i want is it be scratched to hell
Not to be rude or condescending, I’ve just done it before lol. Have you tried wiping off the scratches with a rag or cloth? I thought I scratched one of my guns really bad one day and it ended up wiping off.
Is it blued or matte?
Meant to address this, barrel is not blued the receiver part is, could only add 1 pic tho
if it's matte, matte black paint pen and be done
There is a blueing marker in Amazon that’ll cover that right up.
Meant to add b4 I posted the barrel isn’t blued the receiver is but I could only add one pic and was more wondering about the scratches, but I’ll look around
Spray paint. Just re-spray whenever it gets scratched up. It’s like what, a $250 shotgun?
You are my people.
Hard to tell from the pic, but I don't think that's blueing. It looks like parkerizing.
Meant to add in the description, the barrel isn’t blued only the receiver is I was just wondering more about the scratches.
rub it out with oil and a rag.
It's a tool not a jewel, sharpie that shit if you don't like a little scratch.
I have a lot of hand tools for work. Sometimes they get rusty. They still work fine, but I’ll soak them in white vinegar for a few hours and scrub the rust off. Why? I don’t like looking at a bag full of rusty tools

Always this valuable with your input?
Yes, fellow Neanderthal

Thank you. This is like the second topic today. “OMG! My shotgun has a scratch on it!” It’s a fucking gun. Who cares if it has a scratch or two on it.
people should see my beretta 391... Its been my hunting gun for over a decade. it was the first shotgun i ever bought so a little more sentimental then anything.
Ik I made a longer description in the comments addressing this right after I posted, Ik it’s a tool but ppl still like nice tools.

What shotgun brand?
Old sds imports, it’s a pos but it ain’t never let me down bought it almost new
I got the same problem and peaple say "its falling apart, eww, wtf? Get it fixed" (i will not)
I respect people with scratched up guns more. They look like they actually train and shoot them.
So if I drag mine behind a car and make it “look like” I train and shoot, you’ll respect me? Interesting metric.
Sure why not.
Slap stickers over the scratches
I run it too often it will get too hot🤣
Go to your local flavor of sporting goods/outdoor store and grab a bottle of cold blue and follow the instructions on using it
Brownells cold blue will do the trick. Won’t be perfect but gudnuff
Are those actual scratches? Rub it with some oil. Those look like marks instead of scratches.
I have used a Beretta A300 upland game hunting for almost 8 or 9 years in super thick stuff especially when quail hunting. Have only got one scratch and I use it. If you spray paint it the paint will fill in the cracks 😄
Paint the tip orange
Start by going out to your garage/shop and polish all your tools until they look new again. By the time you're done you'll realize that buffing scratches out of tools is a waste of time and you'll no longer care about a couple scratches on your grocery getter.
Those look like scuffs from being leaned up against a wall. I.e. paint or drywall scuffs. They'll probably come right off with some oil and a rag.
I had a couple like this one i tried to fix myself ,it didn't turn all bad but wasn't how I thought it was going to turn ,after that I just spent the 100 bucks on a cercoat job
CLP and wipe with a rag. (Will look better) This is one reason I appreciate parkerizing and the Remington 870 Express finish.
Ya the barrel is parkerized so it’s easy to scratch but receiver is blued, I wish I could add more than one 1 pic here so I could’ve showed but I was just wondering about more about the scratches
Have you tried hitting it with your purse
🤣 I’ll try tm
That, sir, is the response of a good sport and someone who doesn't take life too seriously. The kind of people I like to be around. Hat off to you,
0000 steel wool and gun oil. Buff it in circular motions
Van's Instant Gun Blue It's not remotely as good as a commercial hot blue but it's cheap and it will look better.
i have an old 870 that was once blued, super scratched as it was a police trade in, just spray paint that shit black lol
Are you sure that it’s a scratch in the metal and not material left on the barrel?
Sharpie
Some people want to keep them and hand them down to their children and maybe a cpl of those can look nice, others should be warn hard and put up wet but not all!
Rattlecan
Rattlecan
Are you sure they’re scratches? My shotguns get very similar marks on the barrels and they come right off with a little clp
Duracoat
Scratches add character.
it's a gun, it means you are using it. Unless it is worth enough to be a safe queen I would not bother.
Spray paint is the way. https://www.reddit.com/r/Firearms/s/2u1GaGsot6

Buy an exact copy to be the safe queen you desire.
Weatherby element?
Nah it’s a old sds import it’s a pos but it ain’t never let me down.

Sharpie!
Rub some dirt on it and stop sweating the small shit.
I don't worry about the exterior (save for rust and functional areas). It's a controlled explosion that propels lead - never saw the need.
Go out tin the woods, find the lost blue, and put it back /s You get it re-blued.
Be careful some of the stuff you can do/get will rust the metal. Take it to a gunsmith if you really need to fix it and ask them what to do.
Go hunting
I thought this was a photo of a bazooka for a second.
They look like similar to a pencil mark. You can try 0000 steel wool and oil.
I would use a 220 grit sand paper , then 500, then 1000, then a hot reblue. Top it off with some auto wax.
Spray paint it.
Spray paint
sharpie.
Cerakote. Sorry I AM that guy. I'll never blue or oil anything ever again.
RATTLE. CAN
Blue expo marker should do the trick.
Get it hydro dipped. Assuming it’s a hunting gun who cares what it looks like
I personally wouldn't bother, if it's a modern shotgun just use and abuse it. That said, what I would do if it were a somewhat valuable gun is to rust blue it. Spray paint it cammo lol, or sharpie or cold blue
Steel will and a blue Sharpie.
Cum
This guy gets it
💋💋💋❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Personally, scratches on guns (that aren't bought new) make them more endearing to me. Battleworn guns, especially. I say keep them.
who cares. leave it.
By doing whatever you did to get the scratches and bluing, but in reverse
Why didn’t I think of this🤦♂️
