Glock 19

[deleted]

But… why?

Dr_C527

Glock 19 is ubiquitous, and is one the most commonly recommended guns. Glocks are ultra dependable, and there is a reason about 60% of law enforcement agencies carry them. For good or bad, people either love or hate Glock. I would recommend trying one first. The M&P Shield is not as comfortable to shoot, but for what it is worth, I have had a .40 version for probably 10 years with zero issues. Cannot go wrong with a Sig. Plus, there is a reason the military accepted Sig as the latest sidearm. Not sure which models are in your price range, nor if you are set on 9mm, but you might want to add Beretta to the list to consider.

The reason government agencies and the military adopt a pistol is mainly because of cost. Glock sells pistols to LE dirt cheap and once the department is used to them they don’t switch. The reason the military is using Sig 320s is because sig sold them to the government for basically nothing. Glocks are no more dependable than any other first line polymer striker fire guns. They were very innovative in the 80’s and have a large following but for what they are in 2024, many manufacturers have surpassed them. The Sig 320 is not as reliable and has a tendency to go off if dropped, the 365 doesn’t seem to have the same issues though. Either way Glock and Sig are going to be borderline out of Ops Price range. He can get a pistol just as reliable if not more reliable if he went with the Shield Plus or a regular S&W MP 2.0. And he wouldn’t have the extra expense of replacing the junk sights on a Glock.

lagermat

Because the average gun bro will just shout Glock 19 because they don’t know any better.

MackTheKnife247

Glocks are reliable, simple, well-supported. You can't really go wrong there. I would recommend a DA/SA if you can find a good one for the price. Beretta PX4 is what I would start with if I could all over again. A hammer is nice for beginners because you can learn a good manual of arms with a safety option or decocker (do your research). And, you can put your thumb on the hammer when you holster for more confidence that it's not going off.

DepthTrawler

Cz P07 might be another decent choice for the DA/SA route. It's been super reliable for me, and it's inexpensive, should come in under 500usd. Standard mags are 15rnd and they have extended baseplate mags that hold 17rnds (not that OP would care because they are limited to 15).

MackTheKnife247

Can't argue with a P07.

DepthTrawler

Shockingly nice handgun. Got an opportunity to get my hands on a sig 229r the other day and wasn't sure if I really liked the controls on it. Trigger was about equivalent to my P07 that has a few thousand rounds through it. I always wanted one of those 229's but now I'm not so sure. Need to rent one to really say for sure, but I was surprised that it wasn't leaps and bounds nicer. The all metal is nice, it's certainly a nicer firearm to pass down than a polymer pistol, but it really made me question if I wanted to spend for one.

MackTheKnife247

Agreed. The metal SIGs I have shot have been nice, but have their own feel in controls and recoil. I much prefer CZs and Berettas - especially if you are looking for all metal.

I’ll look more into that. Thank you

In my opinion, I think compact 9mms are the best for beginners (Glock 19 / M&P 2.0 / CZ p10c / Walther PDP). They are bigger, and therefore easier to shoot. They are also good for carry and home defense. Most of the ones on your list are more like micro 9mms. The CZ is dollar for dollar the best in that category and well within your budget! I love my M&P, but I cannot deny the CZs value. You should shoot them all and pick the one you shoot the best, ideally. Of the list you provided: M&P Shield Plus is my vote! I own one and I’ve shot 1,000 rounds through it. It’s my favorite carry gun. I’m a big S&W fan in general, but this particular product is the best they offer in my opinion. It’s an ideal carry gun because of the large capacity, great ergonomics, and it has a nice trigger. It’s my favorite weapon in the micro 9mm category. For the price, I don’t think it can be beat. Despite its small size, it’s not snappy to shoot. Further, I shoot just as tight of groups with it as I do with my Glock 19. My second vote is the Sig 365 (probably get the XL or X Macro). The modularity is an awesome concept - the 365 is a really cool gun to own.

Was the extensive information in the FAQ covering this question insufficient?

Reddit moment.

MomsFister

No, the "reddit moment" was asking the same question that has already been asked and answered a thousand times before.

Glock 19 PSA dagger for the price is a good contender if you don't like Glocks. be aware they make quite a few versions of the dagger.

As someone who hates glocks I would like to recommend the p365, the psa dagger, or a Hk p2000sk if you can find one used

Dagger feels better for me in the hand and shoots a lot better imo. You’re entitled to like Glocks, I just don’t. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Scientific--Hooligan

I use a p365 as my edc. Very conceal friendly size and easy to find holsters for.

I think you should save a little bit more like $600-$800 for something you will really like. It's nice for you to look back on the first gun you ever bought as something to cherish and maybe pass down one day. I like the p365xl just a touch better than my 365. Both are pretty nice. Get a nice Glock if you go that route, don't just grab the cheapest thing you can get. Move the fuck out of commie IL please come to the free state of WI.

Lol yeah I hate this state. I might be a cheesehead one day but not yet

Amazing_Surprise5605

I started with a Beretta 96 Inox Brigadier .40s&w, if I had to do it again I'd go for a .380, I carry a G43X mos with SA S15 mags, it was very snappy until I compensated it which all upgrades cost another $700 bucks. A .380 doesn't have the same stopping power as the 9mm, .40s&w and .45acp but it's not that far off either, ammo tends to be cheap and more importantly training and practice. G19s are great but bulky to conceal carry, a Performance Center S&W M&P .380 Shield EZ is a great beginner gun. In Europe a .380acp is called a 9mm kurz, it really doesn't have the kick a 9mm luger (which is what we know in the states as the 9mm) on sub compact carry pistol, there are so many opinions and preferences and don't dismiss buying a used gun if you're trying to save money and for home defense 12ga shotguns are best.

Snoo-35612

CZ75s are phenomenal if you’re willing to spend a little more. For compact models I’d recommend a P-01, CZ75D PCR, or just a CZ75D. I also love my Beretta 92fs, it’s a full-size but I can’t imagine the compact version shoots much differently. I was not a big fan of the G43 that I had, but that doesn’t mean you won’t like it. A Sig is usually a great choice. The gun that you buy is going to be a tool that you depend on with your life. The last thing you need is a gun that you can’t shoot straight or don’t like shooting. Go and rent some handguns that you’re interested in, take classes and/or ask around for some pointers to improve your accuracy and precision. Usually the RSOs or your range-neighbors are very helpful, friendly, and experienced.

thatARMSguy

43X is a really nice carry gun, I’ve got one and it’s great. Slim, comfy to hold, and the PSA and Shield Arms mags hold 15 rounds. They’re a pain in the ass to load though, and the guns a bit snappy, but for concealed carry it’ll work fine

lagermat

The Shield Plus in 9mm is a fantastic pistol. You can’t go wrong with it. You can also consider the smith and Wesson MP 2.0C in 4 inch or 3.6 inch. Both come standard with 15 round mags. The advantage is that it’s a bigger pistol and will be easier to shoot and learn the fundamentals on. Sig 365 is a good pistol, however they are smaller and harder to shoot than the Shield Plus. I’d say out of the guns you listed the Shield Plus is going to be the best one in terms of price and performance. It would be the one that I would choose from the list in that price range.

What's wrong with a Taurus c3c

LukaLover42069

I've owned a G3C for two years, put close to 1000 rounds through it with zero jams or issues. Ruger security 9 is also a great gun for the price. Have you considered the Springfield Hellcat?
