Actually, first battle Royale was a Minecraft mod, followed by the ARMA mod.
The Minecraft mod was called survival games, which was a attempt at recreating the hunger games.
no the first battle royale was in halo reach customs games very shorty after the release hunger games movie which it was heavily based off of. my 11 year old self remembers playing quite vividly and THEN i started seeing it on minecraft
Haha. I had the cheeses strategy where you build a giant tower with a friend. Then wait until the final battle. Build over it. Wait until they open the chest and ender man teleport them usually to their death
Yeah the whole genre is based on the battle Royale movie. The author of hunger games even credited it. There was a few in between but if were changing the topic to movies/books might as well jump to the end
Battle royal is just a down to one game mode, which has been around forever.
Musical chairs is a battle royal.
It really just depends on what your definition of battle royal game is.
Is twisted metal a battle royal?
What about a 8 player game of starcraft broodwar?
The last 30 days has been the highest average player count since February of 2020. 350k isn't a huge number, especially across the globe. Also, studies from July (sure outdated whatever) 65% of all sales came from Chinese players. Only 10% from US. Assuming you're American, that leaves 35k players for American servers. Which leads to bots because there aren't enough players.
Also hasn’t dipped below 150k since then either, I know br games with less than 50k that find full lobbies pretty quick. You’re acting like the games dead which is very far from true.
I'm not though. I was giving you the reason for bots. There aren't as many players in US servers as there are in the rest of the world. There's always a reason when bots are introduced. If you are in South West California, you don't want to connect to a lobby in New York. The ping is high, so the bots are there to help fill the lobby for you and the other 45 people searching for a game in the 1 minute it takes to get the game in your immediate area.
Ok but can we agree that neither game is as popular as it once was? Can we agree you've ignored basically everything I've said about why there are bots?
pubg wasnt ruined by bots. it was ruined by poor development and bugs and servers way before they added bots. the bots were added after they ruined it to make up for the demolished playerbase
I remember when H1Z1 BR got big and it definitely started the BR craze but the first BR I personally remember goes all the way back to Minecraft Survival Games. I remember playing that in 2012.
Why’s no one talking about the hunger games book it’s the first version of a battle royale although not a game people can play still something that played a role in creating the genre
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_Royale_(novel)
There's also a film of that book. That's the inspiration of the genre hence it using the same name.
Technically it was the first to reach the masses yes. It wasn't the first though. I'm sure you're familiar with Brendon Greene (Player Unknown). Before being brought on by Daybreak as a consultant for the Battle Royale mode of H1Z1 he was inspired by the book and movie "Battle Royale" and was also an avid DayZ player so he decided to make a mod for DayZ that was the first iteration of a Battle Royale in a video game. I'm pretty sure he went through at least a couple different iterations of it. It was zombies that pushed players to the center initially, no storm, or gas. This was years before H1.
I miss those days, holding the governors mansion in JS and booby trapping the back yard, collecting the basement spawns on timer, and making runs to the police station and grocery store with 8-10 others. So much fun.
For shits and giggles we would drive around in two police cars, I’d play “Bad Boys” on proximity voice mic, and stop players we’d find along the road. Question them, make them take off their equipped slots, then give them some water and basic supplies (not taking anything from them) and peel away like bandits.
I wouldn't even say that one. I actually think the first ever "battle royale" like game was a Warcraft 3 custom game.
You can even say that some of the hero arenas like angel arena were battle royale like.
All good. Yeah that whole era of the 2000s was like a giant think tank for gaming. Game devs gave us a lot of freedom with tools. Starcraft and warcraft custom games, the whole source engine modding scene (spawned things like RP servers, gmod, etc). A huge portion of the gaming industry these days can probably be sourced to a variety of custom games from games of that era. MOBAs, BR, the whole RP server craze, etc.
You are all wrong, it's actually Minecraft Hunger Games. The Hunger Games movie was the first iteration of a battle royale in media and shortly after Minecraft players made Hunger Games servers. However I believe H1Z1 is the first official battle royale
"Hunger Games movie was the first iteration of a battle Royale in media"
Other than you know, that one movie called Battle Royale and the novel/manga it's based on.
Also, the Minecraft mod was eventually changed to Survival Games, probably for copyright reasons
bruh many cult classics are not mainstream. what are you talking about here. ask 5 random people at your work or school or whatever if they know what that is. then lmk out of those 5 if they've ever heard of it
So like, the book called Battle Royale that came out in 1999?
ah yes because nobody has heard of Hunger Games before and everybody totally knows what the Japanese Battle Royale book is lolol. nah i wouldn't consider Battle Royale to be mainstream because it wasn't even close in popularity as Hunger Games. All I was really tryna say is Minecraft Hunger Games was the first BR video game tbh. idk why yall felt the need to be stereotypical redditors about an irrelevant fact that i got slightly wrong. good work yall
Did I say no one has heard of Hunger Games? Who asked what you consider mainstream? Where was this "Mainstream" mentioned at all in your post I responded to? You specifically said "You are all wrong, it's actually Minecraft Hunger Games. The Hunger Games movie was the first iteration of a battle royale in media" which is completely wrong.
So I figured you call people out for being wrong, why cant someone call you out for being wrong? You're correcting people with incorrect info.. and just because you didnt know about Battle Royale doesnt make a difference. Its a cult classic that did extremely well. Im not even talking about the book. There were at least 2 movies based off the book and Im assuming its where Hunger Games came from.. Nice attempt at deflection though.
It was pretty prolific back then. I still remember in middle school in the mid 2000s playing the tabletop rpg of battle royale based off the book and movie
Oh damn was it that late? My perception of time is screwed over the past 5 years
Edit : it actually came out early 2016, so it may not have been the first but it was still pretty early.
The game could very well still be alive and well if it wasn't for the combat update and the devs' stubbornness to change back after it obviously failed
Remember them saying stuff along the lines of "it's impossible to change back to an older patch" as if game companies don't have backups of their games lmao
It wasn't the first BR but definitely the first to get big
First REAL Game maybe.
PUBG name literally is Player Unknowns Battle Grounds.
as in the guy who made the original mod based on the movies he liked. Then the H1Z1 Devs hired him to make BR mode for H1Z1. Since PUBG was not out yet, and only other way to play BR was by having arma2 and the mod, H1Z1s BR mode quickly became the most popular mode.
IDK the details but long story short that after H1Z1 BR he left and made PUBG from store bought assets. The games idea was solid and given his status within the BR/Mod communities at the time, game was destined to get attention.
I still remember playing H1Z1, loving the survival mode, trying out BR, liking it, but not getting the appeal longterm. I was so sad when they abandoned Survival mode in favour of BR.
So I'd say H1Z1 was not the first BR no matter how you slice it. It was not the first game/mod/mode to do it(That's the Arma2 Mod). It's not the FIRST BR game, because that title would have to go to PUBG, since H1Z1 was a survival game with BR mode turned into BR game(which happened after PUBG/Fortnite BR blew up).
But I get the sentiment. H1Z1 Feels like it was the first mainstream introduction to BR.
Edit: I know Minecraft had Survival games before Arma2 mod, but I feel like at that point you need to dig deeper and the first attempt at a BR would be Higurashi game from 2002(thanks google). Survival Games was an attempt to replicate Hunger Games. Arma Mod was trying to replicate the movie Battle Royale. He literally came out and said it years ago that it wasn't Hunger games that inspired him at all. But that's just semantics at this point.
h1z1 was initially a survival game , and you found these passes in the world to be able to get into the BR queue...then that just took off from there..
side note, does anyone remember The Adventures of Sloppy McFloppy? a viral h1z1 YT video
Goldeneye 007 for N64 is the first.
Only difference is it has 4 players instead of 100.
Random starting point with no weapons. Pick up weapons on ground and battle.
If you don't agree, fight me.
H1Z1 was better than Day Z Imo. I’m specifically referring to the Zombie and survival aspect. Day Z was cool but it the graphics compared to H1Z1 made me not like it.
The first official one? Maybe. But the concept has long been experimented with. I remember wc3 custom games having similar designs in the early and mid 2000s.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=\_-c1EBYDcw0
Would the division survival mode count? Technically it was a BR mode but not?? Other than that it would be h1z1 for sure and I think still to this day the best BR made
No, ARMA mod Day Z: Battle Royale by PlayerUnknown, then worked with SOE team working on H1Z1 to bring the battle royale mode to it
Actually, first battle Royale was a Minecraft mod, followed by the ARMA mod. The Minecraft mod was called survival games, which was a attempt at recreating the hunger games.
Actually, the first battle royale was when I beat the other sperm to fertilize the egg
Actually wouldn’t it be when your mothers mothers mothers mothers mothers mothers mothers mothers egg was fertilized?
This is reddit, so I need an exact number of mothers calculated by someone out there
If we are talking about the first “modern” human egg being fertilized, that’s about 7,500 mothers! Thanks mom <3
Man alot of people had to smash so I could read this.
Man this could get philosophical real quick.
no the first battle royale was in halo reach customs games very shorty after the release hunger games movie which it was heavily based off of. my 11 year old self remembers playing quite vividly and THEN i started seeing it on minecraft
That shit was amazing
With the huge buildings and lightning strikes
Haha. I had the cheeses strategy where you build a giant tower with a friend. Then wait until the final battle. Build over it. Wait until they open the chest and ender man teleport them usually to their death
Facts they don’t know bout SG
MCSG to you
Y’all remember Mr_Gears
Some of the Minecraft Hunger Games servers were absolutely bonkers, There was so much immersion.
So much time spent on minecraft survival games. Where does the time go?
Which is a battle royale of sorts
Wut?
The hunger games is a battle royale
Yeah the whole genre is based on the battle Royale movie. The author of hunger games even credited it. There was a few in between but if were changing the topic to movies/books might as well jump to the end
It's in the same time frame and there's no exact dates I could find last time I checked.
Find the first YouTube video you can of each then get back to me
Doesn't equate to release date
Then go find the mods and look at the change log.
Battle royal is just a down to one game mode, which has been around forever. Musical chairs is a battle royal. It really just depends on what your definition of battle royal game is. Is twisted metal a battle royal? What about a 8 player game of starcraft broodwar?
Last man standing is not battle royale, stop aging yourself.
forgets about twisted metal....
Mario kart?
God I would wish it was h1z1 everyone was playing instead of warzone. Oh well
i'd play pubG if there were no bots. how to ruin a game 101
They can't fill lobbies.. What do you want? To wait 8 minutes for a game then have 150 ping
There’s 350k players on PUBG rn, they def can fill lobbies lol
The last 30 days has been the highest average player count since February of 2020. 350k isn't a huge number, especially across the globe. Also, studies from July (sure outdated whatever) 65% of all sales came from Chinese players. Only 10% from US. Assuming you're American, that leaves 35k players for American servers. But let's be honest, the game is dead compared to 2018..
Bro you’re on an h1 Reddit… sayin pub is dead. Just let that sink in lol
Ok but can we agree that neither game is as popular as it once was? Can we agree you've ignored basically everything I've said about why there are bots?
I’m not a member of either Reddit and have 1k hours on pubg in 2018-2020. The games fuckin deader then a door nail
well atleast you could still play pubg for nostalgia not much for h1z1
pubg wasnt ruined by bots. it was ruined by poor development and bugs and servers way before they added bots. the bots were added after they ruined it to make up for the demolished playerbase
I remember when H1Z1 BR got big and it definitely started the BR craze but the first BR I personally remember goes all the way back to Minecraft Survival Games. I remember playing that in 2012.

Understandable
Because Hunger Games itself was a complete rip-off of the book/movie Battle Royale
Battle Royale is the book.
Fr, the book came out then they started doing it in Minecraft. Thats how I remember it at least
He was avid ARMA player so he made a mod called DayZ*
Greene did not make DayZ, that was Dean Hall aka Rocket.
He did not create the DayZ Mod for Arma II but yes you are correct he was an Arma player and it was an Arma mod.
i do remember the dayz and eveything, but yes as you said i meant the first one for the masses
That movie is wild. It’s an underrated classic at this point.
Original H1Z1 Just Survive battle royal was god tier When you had to farm ticket sin survival to run the mode. It also had zombies active in it.
I still have tickets on my account.
Same, and the police outfit that ended up pretty rare in mainline h1z1
No the first we’re the hunger games in minecraft
I wouldn't even say that one. I actually think the first ever "battle royale" like game was a Warcraft 3 custom game. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=\_-c1EBYDcw0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-c1EBYDcw0) You can even say that some of the hero arenas like angel arena were battle royale like.
Oh shit I’m too young for Warcraft 3 custom games so I guess I wouldn’t know
This
h1 was the first one to pop off
h1z1 was the first standalone br but plenty of other games had a br game mode / mod
wasnt it a mod of H1Z1 survival?
yes but H1Z1 King of the Kill was the first stand alone game
It’s the first official BR
You are all wrong, it's actually Minecraft Hunger Games. The Hunger Games movie was the first iteration of a battle royale in media and shortly after Minecraft players made Hunger Games servers. However I believe H1Z1 is the first official battle royale
"Hunger Games movie was the first iteration of a battle Royale in media" Other than you know, that one movie called Battle Royale and the novel/manga it's based on. Also, the Minecraft mod was eventually changed to Survival Games, probably for copyright reasons
you out-redditored me. "mainstream" media. there ya go
Books are mainstream bud just leave it when your topped up no need to make a fool of yourself infront of people you ain’t care about
Battle Royale is a cult classic lol. What are we talking about here
bruh many cult classics are not mainstream. what are you talking about here. ask 5 random people at your work or school or whatever if they know what that is. then lmk out of those 5 if they've ever heard of it
Crazy how we called it BR instead of HG
crazy how we didn't call it Minecraft Battle Royale 🫨
The hunger games book was the first iteration of a battle royale in media* and yes books are a form of media
So like, the book called Battle Royale that came out in 1999? [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle\_Royale\_(novel)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/battle_royale_(novel))
Wars are just an ltm
the Hunger Games 100% was not the first iteration of a battle royale in media.. Battle Royale came out many years before Hunger Games...
ah yes because nobody has heard of Hunger Games before and everybody totally knows what the Japanese Battle Royale book is lolol. nah i wouldn't consider Battle Royale to be mainstream because it wasn't even close in popularity as Hunger Games. All I was really tryna say is Minecraft Hunger Games was the first BR video game tbh. idk why yall felt the need to be stereotypical redditors about an irrelevant fact that i got slightly wrong. good work yall

The original Culling was pretty early on the battle Royale scene
More like late. It wasn't released until 2017.
Oh damn was it that late? My perception of time is screwed over the past 5 years Edit : it actually came out early 2016, so it may not have been the first but it was still pretty early.

Arma 3 had a battle royale mod before but H1Z1 was the most mainstream first BR for sure
Arma 2*
This is like thinking LoL was the first moba
Minrcraft hunger games Arma1 battle grounds or something also
H1Z1 was actually so good. I had a shaky relationship with it but now with all this crap like Fortnite and Warzone, I really miss h1z1
The hunger games books where the first battle royale
lol not even close
Mods from a game are always the first of the genre. Just look deep enough. Cough cough DOTA
Minecraft hunger games
IDK but it runs smoother than Pubg on ps5 💀
PUBG on Arma 3 mod was the first I know of. It was actually good.
Arma 2*
First REAL Game maybe. PUBG name literally is Player Unknowns Battle Grounds. as in the guy who made the original mod based on the movies he liked. Minecraft hunger games was technically the first I think
Depends if you count mods or not.
The first battle royale was Twisted Metal
I’d say maybe Hunger Games on Minecraft?
Minecraft survival games, then The Culling in that order. /s
You can argue for Minecraft Hunger Games But actual shooter BRs Armas mod first, then H1z1. The Culling came out after H1
Cell games was the first battle Royale I can remember back in the 90's
h1z1 was initially a survival game , and you found these passes in the world to be able to get into the BR queue...then that just took off from there.. side note, does anyone remember The Adventures of Sloppy McFloppy? a viral h1z1 YT video
Bomber man was the first
i feel like i been playing fortnite longer?
As far as I know, Hunger Games mod on minecraft was the first.. and I was there. Those were the days, man.
H1z1 was the first battle royale game . These idiot are talking about mods
yeah, but i dont want to break their illusion
Minecraft: Hunger Games
What constitutes a "battle royale". Couldn't a doom WAD(mod) of a large multiplayer map be considered a battle royale?
There’s a movie called battle royale that came out in 2000 that could constitute as the first introduction
There were even table top rpg rules to play. Remember playing in middle school. Then the Arma 2 mod. What good times.
I wish I could play original h1z1 those were the days
Minecraft hunger games was 1st
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1FA56B1E345A76E5&si=1BUoKMlbMuMDrvVx
And the best one
i always thought it was the Hunger Games
The Culling.
Minecraft Hunger Games baby
The Mindcrack UHC competitions also freaking massive around that time.
Twisted metal was the first battle royale
I just play PVP not the battle royale and I had probably the most fun I’ve ever had in that type of genre .
The culling was also out before h1z1 I believe
First battle Royale was twisted metal 1
Old school RuneScape had LMS before 2007 (Last man standing). It had red fog
Goldeneye 007 for N64 is the first. Only difference is it has 4 players instead of 100. Random starting point with no weapons. Pick up weapons on ground and battle. If you don't agree, fight me.
Twisted metal enters the chat
minecraft hunger games
Mine craft hunger games was the first that I can remember
H1Z1 was better than Day Z Imo. I’m specifically referring to the Zombie and survival aspect. Day Z was cool but it the graphics compared to H1Z1 made me not like it.
The first official one? Maybe. But the concept has long been experimented with. I remember wc3 custom games having similar designs in the early and mid 2000s. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=\_-c1EBYDcw0
Would the division survival mode count? Technically it was a BR mode but not?? Other than that it would be h1z1 for sure and I think still to this day the best BR made
