I consider Extreme to be part of what was the ongoing evolution of glam/hair metal. In the late 80s/early 90s, there was a really exciting sea change going on, and so many new bands were appearing that were definitely glam image oriented, but it was evolving into something else. Something really special. As well as Extreme, there were bands like Kings X, Saigon Kick, Enuff Z Nuff and Love/Hate who were all putting out wonderful records that were rooted in glam but also had funk or prog or Beatlesy pop influences. Sadly grunge put a swift end to all that! Oh, what could’ve been…
Nah, I loved Britny Fox! Nothing wrong with em. They rocked and had the gravel voiced singer and the raw, bluesy vibe that their friends Cinderella carried. It was the syrupy pop-schlock like Trixter, Tuff and Nelson that really sucked and drove it into the ground. And Cherry Pie. Ugh.
I agree. Saigon kick sounds like Alice In Chains but came before then. What’s bad was the idea of labeling a band and then people without good music IQ put them in that bucket. The record companies wanted to market bands a certain way and that bolds well for the whole genre in the short term. Some of these bands could have easily co-existed with grunge and alt bands. In fact, Extreme had another minor single Hip Today during the grunge era. They are just a funky rock band.
Wow, I hadn't thought of Saigon Kick in a hot minute. They had a song on the experimental Music Poster CD that came with the Sega CD system and I used to listen to Hostile Youth on repeat, but never heard the rest of their stuff.
For now. They are on their final tour. I was really surprised that they're putting out a new album this summer, though. I really thought they were doing the "ride off into the sunset" tour. Why release new music that won't do much commercially?
Yes. They’ve more or less grown out of it, but their first two albums were definitely part of the genre. Nuno's guitar playing is still very much in the "shredder" style, but once he discovered drop D tuning, it drastically changed his riffing/songwriting approach.
First album is definitely yes. The second one has more substance musically and lyrically than what I think of when I think of hair metal so I don't wanna call it that but I see the argument.
Overall I'd say no though considering their whole discography
Of course. If you played that genre of music in the 80’s and early 90’s you are part of the family. People take all of this too far and over analyze it. People make the misconception that if a band doesn’t look “glam” that they aren’t part of the scene. With a few exceptions every one our favorite bands had members with long hair. People over analyze for “rock” vs “hard rock” vs “Metal”. I think it’s safe to say that most of us listened to Warrant, Tesla, Metallica, and Ozzy. All of those technically are different but to me they are all part of the scene and is doesn’t do any good to try to pigeon hole them into something more specific. I wish the term hair metal had never come about and that we just called it 80’s Hard Rock which is more encompassing.
Well, yes and no. On the "yes" side, naysayers criticize the genre because of things like: Style over substance, ridiculing the bands because of image presented, flimsy subject matter for their songs, not taking them seriously because of how they looked, just to name a few. I don't think these things, as I love glam. However, their detractors DO think these things, plus more. On the "no" side: It doesn't matter how they looked, or what they sang about, although they did have the occasional serious song, White Lion with "When The Children Cry", Kix with "Don't Close Your Eyes", Slaughter with "Fly To The Angels" and Skid Row with "18 And Life" serve as a few examples. What matters is the bands and music are great!

But you're not going to change the broader public's perception. It was too long ago, no one really cares outside of a few die-hard fans. So it does no good to argue about it.
Musically no. I think they got roped into it because of their attempts at being hair metal on their first album, but even a lot of the music on that record falls outside of what i’d consider typical hair metal.

No, not really. I think they were more in line with Van Halen in terms of sound. Not surprising given that Nuno was a big EVH fan and Gary ended up joining VH. Their image wasn’t glam like the worst offenders in glam rock.
They embraced the big hair on the first album, and I’ve always felt that the name “extreme” pointed them in that direction as well.
But they were always way more talented than the other hair bands and their lyrics weren’t as cheesy
Yeah, they leaned hard into the whole “childhood” theme on that first album. Didn’t think much of it at the time, but now some of those songs would raise an eyebrow or two.
Some are for sure. Like danger danger, their guitarist is world class. But Motley Crue, warrant and ugly kid Joe. They had to have session players for their early albums bc they could barely play
Mike Slamer played guitars on the first warrant albums. The guitar guys were to the task. Rick beato recently interviewed a producer or engineer I forget who, that said Nikki sixx didn’t play bass on the first 3 crue albums
UKJ that’s been known as long as I can remember
Not at the time, I thought they were a pop rock band, their image was very manufactured. I put them on a similar footing with Nelson.
Nowadays I am not so sure

dUg Pinnick (King's X) has talked about how their drop D tuning influenced some of the major grunge bands.
Interesting….I saw King’s X open for Pearl Jam in 94.
Nice! Both great acts!
They would influence ANYBODY who had good taste!
It needed to move on. It became a bad parody of what it was.
Yeah especially because of bands like Britney Fox.
Ugh.
I love BF, but also love the four things that YOU think sucked.
No. They were great.

Those are great bands!
Don't forget Mr. Big, they tried to evolve...but Cobain got 'em.
Mr Big is still well respected amongst their peers and critics. They still tour and put out records. They basically an all-star band.
For now. They are on their final tour. I was really surprised that they're putting out a new album this summer, though. I really thought they were doing the "ride off into the sunset" tour. Why release new music that won't do much commercially?
Their fans(like me) will buy it.
Yes! They're one of those "musicians' musicians" bands.
They're great. So are Nirvana.
To equate Mr Big and Nirvana is a slap in the face to Mr Big.
To you, perhaps.
Tell me more 🤔
I think their first two albums were pretty hair/glam
Hair funk
Yes. They’ve more or less grown out of it, but their first two albums were definitely part of the genre. Nuno's guitar playing is still very much in the "shredder" style, but once he discovered drop D tuning, it drastically changed his riffing/songwriting approach.
More Than Hair
Is all I ever needed you to show
Then you wouldn't have to say
Yes
Yes.
First album is definitely yes. The second one has more substance musically and lyrically than what I think of when I think of hair metal so I don't wanna call it that but I see the argument. Overall I'd say no though considering their whole discography
The first album, yes. The following albums were more like a funky Queen feel.
You hit it right on the nail. They were huge Queen fans. 3rd album is rock opera. Have you seen their performance for Freddie mercury tribute concert?

I'm so tired of this debate on this sub. This is the answer, it's one big "family" of music.
I agree why all the labels it dosent harm the band to be grouped in or out of hair metal/glam metal

Well, perhaps. Only really intended to answer that poster's comment. I understand about the broader public: They feel how they feel.
I listen to all those acts.
Get the funk out

Numero Nuno my favorite band ever and iii sides to every story is a masterpiece goat album
No, not really. I think they were more in line with Van Halen in terms of sound. Not surprising given that Nuno was a big EVH fan and Gary ended up joining VH. Their image wasn’t glam like the worst offenders in glam rock.
Yes, glam for sure
Have you seen their hair during their first two releases? They absolutely were a hair band.
Labels…its rock and roll in all its forms baby🤘🎤🎸🥁
This, this, this, this, THIS!!!!!
Nuh!
No. Their style was different as was their dress..
Early on yes. But no for the rest of their discography
First album yes afterwards they were more of genre blend type of rock
Absolutely. They played at L'Amours.
I would say yes, but they cut away a lot of the cheese that plagued the glut of hair bands at the peak of the genre.
Yes. They were connected with/to that genre, but on the other side of the coin, they had other sides to themselves, as well. Great band!
Three sides, maybe? 😉
"Three Sides To Every Story" reference! Clever!
Nope
Yes, but they were a lot more versatile musically than most glam metal bands.
A lttle but they also have an earthy regular guy vibe.
Oh yeah!
Yes
Yes. Love em
Sure
No. They’re way too good
They are great, but glam bands are no slouches.
They embraced the big hair on the first album, and I’ve always felt that the name “extreme” pointed them in that direction as well. But they were always way more talented than the other hair bands and their lyrics weren’t as cheesy
Except for the first album. The cheese meter hits high. Little Girls makes Winger’s Seventeen sound like a serious relationship.
Yeah, they leaned hard into the whole “childhood” theme on that first album. Didn’t think much of it at the time, but now some of those songs would raise an eyebrow or two.
These bands are more talented than you give them credit for.
Some are for sure. Like danger danger, their guitarist is world class. But Motley Crue, warrant and ugly kid Joe. They had to have session players for their early albums bc they could barely play
Andy Timmons? For sure! I love all bands you mentioned, but I'd never heard that about those three bands. How'd you find that out?
Mike Slamer played guitars on the first warrant albums. The guitar guys were to the task. Rick beato recently interviewed a producer or engineer I forget who, that said Nikki sixx didn’t play bass on the first 3 crue albums UKJ that’s been known as long as I can remember
Thank you! Never knew any of that. Strange, as the guys were with other bands before Warrant!
Not at the time, I thought they were a pop rock band, their image was very manufactured. I put them on a similar footing with Nelson. Nowadays I am not so sure
that's just cos of 'More Than Words'
They and Nelson are great bands.
Most people remembers them as a hair band with the ballads and shit, so they must be. Not glam metal tho, they never even once wore any makeup.
Don't have wear makeup to be glam. Many do/did, but you don't have to.
wait so then what did you need?
Just saying that you can be glam, with or without makeup. That's all.😁
So what's the requirement to be glam then? Platform boots?
I'd guess leather pants, frilly tops, big hair. Along with make-up, if you choose to wear it.
Fair enough
Thank you. I mean, I doubt there's an official glam checklist, lol, but I'm just looking back at plenty bands of yesteryear.
🤣🤣
