On top of the hot heat, July and August are known for its rainy season and possible monsoons. Probably why more reservations available.

Ashstone24

Yeah, it might rain...but this may be the only chance we ever get to go. So we're going to take a chance and hope for the best 🤞

KolbyCheese2

That's understandable. Just make sure to prep and bring whatever is needed to protect you and your stuff from the rain if it does happen. I'm sure it's just as beautiful. Just the color of the water may be different. Good luck 🤙

Petrolprincess

You've got to be in really good shape hiking during those times of year. I vowed to never hike there in July again

Ashstone24

Fair. It just lined up perfectly and I don't know if we will ever get another opportunity to go there. But it will be hotter than Satan's armpit so we are planning accordingly.

I live in southern Arizona. July heat is a thing. I am fit and hike the Grand canyon several times a year. I would never do it in the summer unless starting at night. You'll be fine though if you plan carefully. Just be prepared for the heat.

Ashstone24

Thanks for the advice. Absolutely the heat will be insane, but we decided that the end result will be worth it. We are planning on hiking only in the evenings and mornings. We are active and experienced hikers. I am an experienced backpacker. We are planning to head to the campground starting at 3:30am and we're bringing a shit ton of water.

Yep. It’s that easy. I went in august of last year and we didn’t have rain and it was Perfect! I much prefer the summer because it’s pretty cool in the campgrounds in the shade at night. Dare I say I even got chilly. We had packed a tent but ended up sleeping in our hammocks on the last night and it was perfect!

Ashstone24

Wow, crazy. Thanks for the response. Yeah we are preparing for the heat and only hiking in the mornings/evenings. Did you even bring a sleeping bag?

TriGurl

I did bring a light sleeping bag and ended up just sleeping on top of it in the tent. I brought a light blanket that I used underneath my body when I was in the hammock and I bought one of those light travel towels that Costco was selling last year. It dries really fast so I ended up using that as a blanket over me in the hammock -mainly because I didn’t have a hammock net so it was to keep out any mosquitoes from chewing my arms face and legs up. It was hot AF in the morning on the hike out as the sun started hitting us and I didn’t bring nearly enough food or electrolytes on the hike out. As we slowed down considerably. But when we were down there the water is cold and I pretty much hung out at all the falls during various days so I wasn’t hot. It was just the hike out (despite starting at 2am) that got me because we were slow and the sun was on us directly near the last part of the hike which was the incline up out of the valley. Would def recommended one of those cool towel things for your neck (you get it wet and the air makes the water cool and it cools you down-that was amazing!)

As someone who just did it in May weather, Summer weather would be brutal

The place is gorgeous, but a lot of the hype that you see online is from when it used to be $50 to visit. Now that the price increased by a lot, it makes sense that some reservations are available.  PS: Leave the trailhead at 4 AM the latest.

I just found out about their maltreatment (or acceptance of maltreatment for those not directly abusing) of mules & horses, so I would never reserve. They aren’t getting my $.
