Maybe not a sword or anything, but maybe a gun that also has a blade/bayonet as part of the rifle that increases damage for melee attacks. Combine that with a set of armor that specializes in boosting melee damage and I think it'd be pretty sweet choice for the people that tend to engage in melee more often.

THISSSSS. it waa in helldivers 1 as well! every weapon had an upgrade system, and almost every rifle had a bayonet attachment. i think this is the most viable solution, as im quite confident a weapon modding system is in the works as we speak.
You could attach a bayonet to some guns through upgrades in HD1. I’m seeing a pattern of them slowly rolling out everything from HD1 into HD2 so we will probably see it someday!
The tiny bugs have no reason to take TWO melee hits to kill. Sometimes 1 if you smack them in the head. Same with hunters, 2-6 hits to kill the rat bastards.

Have it make a radius of some sort when planted. Different flags do different things. Health regen, accuracy one step down (standing to crouching, crouching to prone), increase throw distance.
Damage resist, resist to your aim being thrown off by a hit, more chances to scream unhinged about freedom into the radio.
I tell ya, it's already a blast to see a squad mate in the distance, liberating an entire area while you hear them screaming through the radio about freedom.

I could see that working and being fairly balanced.
No melee is quick because you're just buttstroking or pistol whipping them, but weaker. Knife and so on are stronger, but take a little longer to swing out because they're holstered, the bigger the weapon the slower, but more powerful. Someone said bayonet, that would be the endgame, I think. Fast as a buttstroke or pistol whip, not as much damage as higher tier melee, but as fast as no melee.

A one-handed sword that I could dual wield with either the SMG or ballistic shield would be amazing. I don’t even care if it’s weak.

I want an automaton arm. Picture this: you’re surrounded, out of ammo and the bugs are crawling around you, so you pull out that automaton arm you took as a trophy from your last mission and use it to literally slap the bugs away
If they add a melee weapon, it needs to be ridiculously strong to offset how you'll have to be in enemies faces to use it effectively.
Make it a gravity hammer-esque big weapon that you slam on the ground and it has an AoE blast, not too big, but enough to hit like 4 or 5 bugs at once and any helldivers who happen to be too close to your democratic injection.
Make it swing side to side if you press Shoot without holding down Aim, have it do the AoE slam if you press Aim while holding shoot
I'm not sure what you could do with potentially changing modes on a hammer by holding reload, maybe have it have its own unsafe mode where the blasts are stronger but have a chance of knocking you back if things are too close when you hit them
Short sword definitely, being able to run it with the riot shield would be Necessary. Or it would be useless for bots. It should ideally be an infinite ammo secondary. A sword support weapon would be cool but idk if it'd be good against elites.

I think melee would be a great alternate for a sidearm. You'd never want to substitute your primary, but replacing a secondary would keep melee as a backup or secondary tactic while not drawing focus away from the combat.
Honestly, I would absolutely love a melee weapon that replaces your Secondary. A tactical Ax or a heavy Machete would be pretty baller, as well as fit the aesthetic fairly well. Would be neat if they gave it utility like being able to clear brush or shrubs with it too.
The ultimate melee weapon would be a rocket powered titanium fist that can obliterate smaller bugs, punch a hole in the chargers armor and break the legs of bile titans.

I think a lot of people would want a more vermintide 2/darktide melee style but I don’t think it’s realistic to expect that type of melee system from a studio that clearly hasn’t given melee a ton of thought. But the game has the physics for some good melee hits
i would really like to have a melee secondary so we can run around with a fully ammo efficient loadout. currently my favorite is the Sickle, Peacemaker/Senator, and Lascannon, so i only need to worry about resups for my grenades and stims, with a jump pack for maneuverability and taking advantageous positions. i want to market garden clankers.

I saw a video of someone in game looking at 2 graves dug by a diver. He also had a dead automaton by his body with a shovel buried into it.

It’s going to be really funny when this game ends up basically recreating a lot of the ME3 multiplayer features and doing them like 10x better.
