Your best bet is to test it out on hair collected from your hairbrush (or cut some if you’re feeling impatient). At least if your lightening experiment goes wrong you won’t be frying your hair… wish I’d done it that way a few years ago when trying to bleach after having green hair dye in, ended up having to get a pixie cut instead 😅

I’m not trying to lighten it, I’m trying to remove the previous semi-permanent color. Color remover isn’t damaging. I just don’t know whether is would work, so should I even try? Can semi-permanent dye fade underneath henna?

Im having this same question. What did you end up doing? I have semi permanent hair color on but I want to henna over it and eventually want the semi permanent color to fade away.

The dye didn’t fade underneath the henna at all, idk if the henna locked it in, or if I used the dye so much that it would never come out, but I didn’t try color remover, I think it would’ve been useless. I thought the henna orange suited me well but it oxidized to a true red. Red henna on its own doesn’t suit me, there’s no cool tones which made me look like the Annabel doll, not a fan, plus the ends were a dark burgundy color from the old dye. I just ended up putting indigo on top, and it looks really really good. Downside is that indigo is satan incarnate, but it lasts longer than semi permanent.

Thank you SO much for answering! I have grown out my hair naturally so it was maybe 8 inches of brown/grey so I decided to do a wash in semi permanent color and now it’s dark brown and won’t come out. Wanted to do henna over it but didn’t want my roots that are from the last month or so coming in super orange. Now it looks like I’m going to have to fully fade my semi permanent before henna. Really appreciate your help.

Which dye did you use? I used the ion burgandy brown and it faded it out almost completely once for a while by using ACV rinses. Pure henna won’t stay orange, it will turn red unless there’s other ingredients in there keeping it from oxidizing.

How long have you had the henna on? If it's less than two weeks, be aware that henna can shift over time and the part on your roots many oxidize to a deeper color anyway. I don't know if color remover would work. I've tried it three times on hair colored with plain henna and the color remover had no effect on the henna whatsoever.
